The most practical alternative to buying one video-game company is a diversified gaming ETF. NERD focuses on video-game companies, ESPO applies a 50% gaming-or-esports revenue test, HERO follows a dedicated video-games-and-esports index, GAMR spans the wider gaming technology value chain, and HERU provides a UCITS structure for eligible international investors.

These funds reduce single-company risk, but they are not broad-market funds. Each remains concentrated in a volatile industry, so compare its mandate, holdings count, top positions, fees, geography, management style, trading access and tax treatment before investing.

Why use a fund instead of one video-game stock?

Owning one publisher, developer or platform company gives you direct exposure, but it also makes your result dependent on a small number of events: a delayed release, a failed launch, a regulatory decision, a change in console policy, a hit to live-service engagement, or a management error. A single stock can fall even while the broader gaming market grows.

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) holds a basket of securities in one trade. A strong game from one constituent can offset a weak release from another, and a company that loses relevance can represent a smaller share after rebalancing. You still bear equity-market risk and industry risk, but you avoid making your entire gaming allocation a referendum on one management team or one franchise.

The trade-off is that a thematic ETF is not automatically diversified in the same way as a global or total-market index. Gaming funds can hold only a few dozen companies, overlap heavily in their largest positions, and include businesses whose results are driven by hardware, semiconductors, advertising, cloud services or other segments. The right choice therefore depends on how “gaming exposure” should be defined in your portfolio.

The five main alternatives at a glance

Fund Exposure approach Management Holdings information Stated cost Access and structure
NERD At least 80% of assets in video-game companies Actively managed since 2025-09-30 Approximately 25–75 issuers expected, according to its SEC filing 0.50% gross expense ratio Trading access and domicile depend on the listing and your broker; verify before purchase
ESPO Pure-play screen: each index company must derive at least 50% of revenue from video gaming and/or esports Index tracking 28 holdings listed by the issuer on 2026-10-15 0.55% expense cap through at least 2027-02-01 U.S.-listed ETF
HERO Video-games-and-esports exposure through the Solactive Video Games & Esports Index Index tracking Not stated in the cited prospectus facts Not stated in the cited facts Confirm listing, currency and broker availability for your country
GAMR Broad gaming value chain: developers, publishers, mobile and online games, GPUs, platforms, software, hardware, peripherals and the metaverse Index tracking 20 holdings 0.59% total expense ratio Confirm listing, currency and tax treatment for your account
HERU Game development, publishing, streaming and distribution, esports leagues, gaming hardware, and AR/VR Index-tracking objective Not stated in the cited facts Not stated in the cited facts UCITS fund registered in listed European and other jurisdictions

Holdings, weights, fees, waivers, listings and index rules can change. Treat the figures above as dated snapshots, not permanent specifications. Read the current prospectus, factsheet and exchange listing before placing an order.

NERD: an actively managed video-game-company basket

What it owns

NERD’s SEC filing says the fund invests at least 80% of its assets in “Video Game Companies.” The filing expects roughly 25 to 75 issuers, a range that is wider than the fixed 20- or 28-holding counts reported for some competing funds. The mandate is therefore closer to direct game-company exposure than to a general technology fund, although the exact portfolio can change with the manager’s decisions.

Why the management change matters

NERD became actively managed on 2025-09-30. The manager can alter holdings and weights without waiting for a rules-based index review. That flexibility may help when a company’s pipeline, valuation or business mix changes, but it introduces manager-selection risk and makes the portfolio less predictable than a strict index.

Cost and historical context

The stated gross expense ratio is 0.50%. In the SEC table covering the year ended 2025-12-31, NERD returned 22.47% for one year and produced a negative 3.43% annualized return over five years. Those are historical results for the specified periods, not forecasts; they also predate or only partly reflect the post-September-2025 active-management structure.

When NERD fits

  • You want a fund whose stated 80% test is explicitly tied to video-game companies.
  • You accept that a manager can change the portfolio and that issuer count may vary substantially.
  • You value a 0.50% gross expense ratio relative to other specialist options.

ESPO: a pure-play revenue screen

How its index defines gaming exposure

ESPO’s underlying index requires companies to derive at least 50% of total revenue from video gaming and/or esports. That rule is a useful answer to the question, “How much of each company’s business is actually gaming?” It does not mean every holding is a game developer; a company can qualify through esports-related activity or a gaming-heavy business mix.

Portfolio size and fee cap

VanEck listed 28 holdings on 2026-10-15. The issuer also listed a 0.55% expense cap running through at least 2027-02-01. A cap or waiver can expire or be amended, so check the current expense section rather than assuming 0.55% is permanent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When ESPO fits

  • You want a rules-based fund with a measurable gaming-or-esports revenue threshold.
  • You prefer a relatively concentrated basket and are comfortable with 28 holdings at the cited date.
  • You can trade a U.S.-listed ETF and have confirmed the currency, tax and withholding implications for your residence.

HERO: index exposure to games and esports

Mandate

HERO tracks the Solactive Video Games & Esports Index. It is designed to provide targeted exposure to companies connected with video games and esports without requiring you to select individual names. The cited prospectus facts do not establish a current holdings count or expense ratio, so obtain those figures from the latest fund documents before comparing HERO on cost or concentration.

What the reported returns do—and do not—tell you

The fund’s SEC prospectus reports a 27.55% one-year return and a 0.08% annualized return over five years through 2025-12-31. These figures show how sharply a thematic fund’s outcomes can differ across periods: a strong single year can coexist with nearly flat five-year annualized performance. They do not predict future returns, and they should not be compared with another fund unless the measurement dates, fees and calculation methods match.

When HERO fits

  • You want an index specifically labeled for video games and esports.
  • You are prepared to inspect the current index methodology, holdings and costs rather than relying on the fund name.
  • You understand that index tracking does not remove industry, valuation or currency risk.

GAMR: the broadest gaming-technology interpretation

Exposure beyond game makers

GAMR lists 20 holdings and charges a 0.59% total expense ratio. Its stated scope covers global companies in the video-gaming value chain, including game development, publishing, mobile and online games, graphics-processing units (GPUs), development platforms, supporting software, hardware, peripherals and the metaverse.

This approach can capture businesses that benefit when gaming grows even if gaming is not their only product. A GPU designer, accessory maker or development-tool provider may earn revenue from several markets, so GAMR can behave differently from a pure-play publisher basket. That wider scope is useful if you want exposure to the infrastructure and tools around games, but it also means the fund may be less sensitive to game sales alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rebalancing and concentration

GAMR rebalances quarterly. Rebalancing can refresh weights as prices and company classifications change, but it does not guarantee low concentration: with 20 holdings, each position can still matter materially. Review the current top holdings and their combined percentage before treating the fund as a diversified core investment.

When GAMR fits

  • You want hardware, GPUs, platforms and peripherals alongside publishers and developers.
  • You prefer a stated quarterly rebalancing schedule.
  • You accept the highest stated expense ratio among the funds with a reported figure here: 0.59%.

HERU: a UCITS route for eligible international investors

Scope and structure

HERU is a UCITS fund. Its stated scope includes game development, publishing, streaming and distribution, esports leagues and gaming hardware, including augmented and virtual reality. UCITS status can make a fund more accessible within European and other jurisdictions where locally registered products are required or preferred, but it does not by itself make the investment safer or more diversified.

What to verify before buying

The cited facts do not provide a current holdings count or expense ratio. Check the fund’s key information document for ongoing charges, replication method, distribution policy, base currency, dealing venue and available share classes. Also confirm that your broker can trade the exact exchange listing and that your account can hold the relevant UCITS share class.

Are these ETFs interchangeable?

No. They overlap, but their selection rules create different exposures.

Direct video-game-company exposure NERD or ESPO NERD has an 80% video-game-company investment test; ESPO requires at least 50% gaming/esports revenue for index companies.
A manager who can change positions actively NERD Its strategy became actively managed on 2025-09-30.
A rules-based video-game and esports index HERO It tracks the Solactive Video Games & Esports Index.

A UCITS structure HERU It is organized as a UCITS fund, subject to local availability.
The lowest stated expense ratio among the documented figures NERD Its stated gross ratio is 0.50%, versus ESPO’s 0.55% cap during the cited waiver period and GAMR’s 0.59% total ratio.

How to choose the right gaming ETF step by step

  1. Define the exposure you actually want. Decide whether you want publishers and developers, esports, mobile games, hardware, GPUs, platforms, or the entire ecosystem. Write the definition down before looking at recent performance.
  2. Read the investment mandate. Look for a minimum-investment test such as NERD’s 80% requirement or ESPO’s 50% revenue screen. A fund name alone cannot tell you how much non-gaming business its holdings have.
  3. Inspect the current holdings and top weights. Count the positions, then calculate how much the largest five represent together. A 20- or 28-stock fund can still be dominated by a few companies.
  4. Check management and rebalance rules. Active management may change exposure between scheduled reviews; index funds follow methodology rules that can also change when the index provider updates them.
  5. Compare the complete cost. Review the expense ratio, any fee cap or waiver expiration, trading commission, bid-ask spread, fund-level transaction costs and currency-conversion charge. A lower headline ratio does not always produce the lowest total cost for your account.
  6. Confirm trading access. Verify the ticker, exchange, currency, order hours, settlement convention and whether your broker permits the fund in your country. For HERU, confirm the specific UCITS share class and local registration.
  7. Check tax treatment. Determine how dividends, capital gains, foreign withholding and fund distributions are handled in your jurisdiction and account type. A tax professional can clarify rules that vary by residence.
  8. Set a position limit. Because these are industry funds, decide in advance what percentage of your overall portfolio can be thematic. Do not let a rising gaming fund silently become your core equity allocation.
  9. Choose an order method. During liquid market hours, a limit order can help control the maximum price you pay. Check the live spread and underlying-market hours, especially when the ETF trades while many international holdings are closed.
  10. Document a review schedule. Recheck the prospectus, holdings, fees and mandate at least when the fund announces a material change, and review your portfolio weight on a regular calendar rather than only after a dramatic price move.

Diversification: what an ETF solves and what it does not

Risk that is reduced

A basket reduces dependence on one company, one game release and one balance sheet. If a single constituent cuts guidance, its effect is limited to that holding’s portfolio weight. Rebalancing can also prevent an old winner from remaining permanently oversized, although the exact mechanism depends on each fund’s rules.

Risk that remains

  • Industry concentration: demand for games, consoles, mobile engagement and advertising can weaken across many holdings at once.
  • Valuation risk: investors may pay high prices for expected growth, then re-rate the whole theme when interest rates or expectations change.
  • Execution risk: delayed launches, weak monetization, server problems, talent losses and failed acquisitions can affect several companies in the same cycle.
  • Currency risk: international holdings can gain or lose value when exchange rates move, even if local share prices are unchanged.
  • Geopolitical and regulatory risk: game approvals, content rules, data restrictions, app-store policies and trade controls vary by country.
  • Technology risk: a new distribution model, platform policy or hardware standard can help some constituents while leaving others behind.
  • Liquidity and tracking risk: an ETF can trade away from its net asset value, and index funds can lag their benchmarks after fees and implementation costs.

Using performance numbers responsibly

The dated figures available for HERO and NERD illustrate why a single return period is a poor selection method. HERO’s 27.55% one-year return through 2025-12-31 was accompanied by only 0.08% annualized over five years. NERD returned 22.47% over one year but lost 3.43% annualized over five years. Different start dates, portfolio changes, fees and market conditions can materially alter the result.

Use performance data to understand volatility and drawdown potential, not to rank funds as permanent winners. Compare the same periods, use total returns when available, note whether figures are before or after expenses, and read the benchmark and methodology. Past performance does not predict future results.

Costs, taxes and practical access

Expense ratios are recurring

NERD’s 0.50% gross ratio, ESPO’s 0.55% cap during the stated waiver period and GAMR’s 0.59% total ratio are annual fund expenses expressed as a percentage of assets. They are generally reflected in the fund’s net asset value rather than billed as a separate invoice. Because waivers and caps can expire, check the latest documents for the effective date and any termination provision.

Trading costs can exceed the headline difference

For a small or infrequent purchase, the bid-ask spread and commission may matter more than a few hundredths of a percentage point in annual expenses. Use the exchange’s live quote, avoid market orders in thin conditions, and consider whether your broker charges currency conversion or foreign-market fees.

Country and account rules are decisive

ESPO is U.S.-listed, while HERU is a UCITS structure registered in listed European and other jurisdictions. A U.S.-listed product may be unavailable to some non-U.S. investors, and a UCITS product may be unavailable to some U.S. accounts. Confirm local registration, withholding-tax treatment, reporting requirements and whether your retirement or taxable account can hold the fund.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming “gaming” means the same thing in every fund

Read the revenue test and eligible-company definition. ESPO’s 50% threshold, NERD’s 80% asset test and GAMR’s value-chain approach can produce noticeably different portfolios.

Equating more holdings with complete diversification

Holdings count is only a starting point. Examine top weights, country exposure, market-cap distribution and overlap with other funds you already own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying after a one-year surge

The HERO and NERD figures show how a strong recent year can coexist with weak or flat multi-year annualized results. Establish an allocation and rebalancing rule before purchasing.

Ignoring currency and trading venue

International securities, exchange hours and currency conversion can affect both returns and execution. Check the fund’s domicile, listing currency and the hours when its largest underlying markets are open.

Treating an ETF as a guaranteed hedge

A gaming ETF is not a guaranteed hedge against losses in an individual game company, technology stock or broad equity index. Correlations can rise during market stress, and several funds may own the same large companies.

A simple decision framework

  • Choose NERD if your priority is an actively managed basket centered on video-game companies and you accept a variable issuer count.
  • Choose ESPO if you want a pure-play-style index rule requiring at least half of each qualifying company’s revenue from gaming and/or esports.
  • Choose HERO if you want the Solactive Video Games & Esports Index and are willing to verify current costs and holdings separately.
  • Choose GAMR if gaming infrastructure—GPUs, platforms, software, hardware and peripherals—is as important to you as game makers.
  • Choose HERU if a UCITS structure and its stated coverage of development, publishing, distribution, esports, hardware and AR/VR match your jurisdiction and portfolio.

None of these choices replaces a diversified core portfolio. Treat a gaming ETF as a targeted allocation, size it for the volatility you can tolerate, and reassess when its mandate, fees, holdings or your circumstances change.
