Start with the spam controls already on your phone. Google Phone, Samsung Phone and iPhone can identify, silence or block unwanted calls, with different trade-offs. Add a carrier filter if your network offers one. Choose Truecaller when you specifically want a community caller-ID database, message filtering or an assistant that screens calls. No available source establishes a controlled, head-to-head accuracy winner, so the best choice depends on how aggressively you want to block unknown callers and how much third-party processing you accept.
Why a layered approach matters
Spam is large enough that relying on one setting is frustrating. The Federal Communications Commission reported 225.7 billion spam texts in 2022. A separate FCC document cited 13 spam or fraud calls per U.S. consumer per month and average scam-call losses of $865. Those figures describe U.S. activity and losses, not a guarantee that every person receives that volume or loses money.
Use layers in this order: your phone’s native controls, your carrier’s filtering, then an optional specialist app. Report persistent abuse separately. A filter can reduce interruptions, but it cannot recover money or investigate a scam for you.

The Associated Press overview lists carrier filters from major U.S. networks and third-party services such as Nomorobo, YouMail, Hiya, RoboKiller and Truecaller, while noting that it did not test or endorse those offerings. Availability, names and controls can differ by country, carrier, phone model and software version.

Set up Google Phone spam protection
Google’s Phone app can show caller identification, warn about suspected spam, filter calls and, on supported devices, automatically block spam detected by Call Screen. Menu names can vary slightly by Android version and manufacturer.
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the three-dot menu, then open Settings.
- Choose Caller ID & spam (the label may appear as Spam and Call Screen on some devices).
- Turn on caller-ID and spam identification so incoming calls can be labeled before you answer.
- Enable Filter spam calls if you want suspected spam handled without ringing normally. Read the on-screen explanation, because filtering can prevent a call from interrupting you.
- On a device that supports it, open Call Screen and enable automatic screening or spam autoblocking. Supported features and languages are device- and region-dependent.
- When a legitimate caller is mislabeled, open the call in your recent list and use the available Not spam or reporting control. Save important numbers to contacts and return to the spam settings if a needed call was filtered.
When Google Phone is the sensible stopping point
Use it alone when your main problem is unwanted calls and you prefer the fewest moving parts. It provides warnings before you answer and can block or screen without installing a separate caller-ID database. The cited material does not establish equivalent native text filtering, so use your messaging app’s own spam controls or a carrier option for texts.
Set up Samsung Phone spam and scam blocking
Samsung Phone exposes a useful choice between broad blocking and a narrower high-risk setting. That distinction matters if you receive delivery calls, medical calls or business calls from numbers you have not saved.

- Open the Phone app and tap the three-dot menu.
- Open Settings, then choose the spam or caller-ID protection option. On some Galaxy software versions this appears under Caller ID and spam protection.
- Choose whether to block all spam and scam calls or only high-risk scam calls. Start with high-risk blocking if missing a legitimate unknown caller would be costly.
- To block a specific number, open Recents, select the number and choose Block. Samsung also exposes blocking from messages and contacts.
- Review the blocked-number list and blocked messages periodically. If a wanted message was caught, remove the number from the blocked list and mark it as safe using the control shown by your software version.
Choosing Samsung’s blocking level
- High-risk only: a conservative first setting for people expecting calls from new numbers.
- All spam and scam calls: appropriate when interruptions are the priority and voicemail or a follow-up text is acceptable.
- Individual blocking: best for repeat callers, texts or contacts that the automated system does not recognize.
Use iPhone’s controls without losing important calls
Apple’s Silence Unknown Callers is intentionally broad. Calls from numbers you have not previously contacted and numbers not saved in your contacts are sent to voicemail instead of ringing. They can still appear in Recents and voicemail, but you may not notice them immediately.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Phone on current iOS versions (older versions may show Phone directly in Settings).
- Open Silence Unknown Callers and turn it on.
- Before enabling it, save schools, clinics, delivery services, workplaces and family numbers you need to reach you. Make a habit of checking voicemail and the Recents list.
- If you need labels rather than blanket silencing, look in Phone settings for Call Blocking & Identification and enable a compatible caller-identification app.
Apple, as quoted by the Associated Press, says: “Incoming calls are never sent to third-party developers.” That statement concerns Apple’s call-identification arrangement; it does not mean every third-party app has identical data practices. Read an app’s current permissions and privacy policy before enabling it.
When Truecaller adds something native tools do not
Truecaller maintains a caller and spam database built from community reports covering robocalls, telemarketing, scams and general phone spam. It can identify a number, filter messages, and enable automatic blocking of known spammers in its preferences. This is useful when you want a label and context rather than simply sending every unknown caller to voicemail.

Truecaller message filtering
Truecaller says message analysis happens locally on the phone. That is a specific product statement, not a blanket guarantee about every feature or future version. Check the permissions requested by the version you install and decide whether local analysis and the remaining app functions fit your privacy requirements.

The Assistant can answer or screen a call, turn the conversation into speech-to-text and let you decide whether to continue. Truecaller advertises “more than 90% accuracy” for spam detection. That is the company’s claim, not an independent benchmark, and it should not be treated as a comparison against Google, Samsung or Apple’s controls.
Safer Truecaller setup
- Install the app from your phone’s official app store and verify the developer name.
- During onboarding, enable only the caller-ID, blocking and message permissions you understand.
- Open preferences and turn on auto-blocking for known spammers only if you accept the possibility of a community label being wrong.
- Start with identification and manual blocking for a week. Move to automatic blocking after reviewing missed calls and filtered messages.
- Configure Assistant screening separately. Tell callers how to identify themselves and check the transcript before rejecting a call.
- Review the blocked list and report incorrect labels so future decisions are based on better information.
Carrier tools: a second layer, not a universal answer
Carrier-level filtering can stop a call or text before it reaches the phone, but each network names and packages its controls differently. Open your carrier’s official app or account page and look for spam protection, scam blocking, call filter or messaging protection. Confirm whether the feature blocks, labels or merely reports a suspected message.

Do not assume that a carrier filter and a phone filter share the same block list. If both are active, a false positive may be harder to diagnose. Keep a note of which layer handled a missed call so you know where to correct it.

The FCC accepts unwanted-call and unwanted-text complaints to support policy and enforcement. The complaint process does not resolve an individual complaint or directly stop the caller. Use your phone’s block and report controls first, preserve evidence of fraudulent messages, and submit an FCC complaint when the pattern is persistent or clearly illegal.
FCC 23-107 explains that, for relevant blocking and legal purposes, the Communications Act treats text messages as calls. That does not make every unwanted text illegal; it explains why call-blocking rules and enforcement discussions can include texts.

Prevent false positives and recover a wanted call
- Save recurring callers: add clinics, schools, delivery companies, employers and family members to contacts.
- Use conservative settings first: choose high-risk-only blocking on Samsung or labeling rather than automatic blocking in a third-party app.
- Check voicemail and filtered folders: especially after enabling iPhone Silence Unknown Callers or aggressive Android filtering.
- Review blocked lists: remove a legitimate number and mark it not spam where the app provides that action.
- Do not call back from a suspicious message: verify the organization through a known website or statement, not the contact details in the message.
- Expect number rotation: blocking one number rarely stops a campaign that uses many spoofed or disposable numbers.
A practical setup sequence
- Identify your risk: if missing an unknown call could affect health, work or a delivery, avoid blanket silencing.
- Enable native identification: turn on Google caller ID and spam warnings, Samsung caller-ID protection, or iPhone caller identification.
- Add the least aggressive block: use Samsung high-risk blocking, Google filtering on a supported device, or iPhone voicemail silencing only when you can check voicemail reliably.
- Protect texts: use Samsung’s blocked-message workflow, your messaging app’s spam controls, or a carrier feature. The cited Google and Apple material does not document equivalent native text-filter details.
- Escalate selectively: add Truecaller if you need community labels, message analysis or Assistant screening.
- Audit after several days: look for missed legitimate calls, blocked texts and battery or permission changes. Relax the setting that caused a problem instead of disabling every layer.
- Report serious abuse: retain screenshots and submit an FCC complaint for enforcement intelligence, understanding that it is not an instant remedy.
What “best” can and cannot mean here
Native controls are usually the most predictable starting point because they are integrated into the dialer and do not require another caller-ID service. iPhone’s approach is the most sweeping: it silences an entire category of unknown callers. Samsung gives the clearest broad-versus-high-risk choice in the cited material. Google combines warnings with screening and automatic spam autoblocking on supported devices.
Truecaller is the better fit when community reputation, message filtering or an interactive screening assistant matters more than keeping the setup minimal. Its claimed “more than 90% accuracy” is not a neutral test result. No source establishes a controlled comparison of detection rates, missed legitimate calls, privacy outcomes or current prices across these products, so a universal winner would be misleading.
