Short answer: For the broadest combination of precise GPS, offline maps and long battery life, choose the Suunto Vertical 2. It offers dual-band GPS, free high-detail offline maps, up to 65 hours of training in its most accurate GPS mode and up to 20 days of daily smartwatch use. Pick the COROS VERTIX 2S for expedition-oriented hardware, the Polar Vantage V3 for structured training and recovery analysis, the Polar Grit X2 Pro for hiking-focused metrics, or the COROS Nomad when downloadable maps and a 50-hour GPS claim matter more than premium materials and advanced navigation conveniences.

Best Garmin alternatives at a glance

There is no single replacement that wins every use case. Battery figures depend on GPS accuracy, screen behavior, sensors, notifications and temperature, so compare watches using the mode you will actually use on a run or hike rather than a headline smartwatch figure.

How to choose a high-end GPS watch without Garmin

Start with the GPS mode you need

Dual-band or dual-frequency GNSS can improve positioning in difficult environments such as tree cover, steep valleys and dense urban areas, but the radio mode consumes more power than an economical tracking mode. For a race or day hike, compare the quoted endurance in the highest-accuracy mode, not only the longest low-power number. A watch that lasts 65 hours in its most accurate mode may be more useful to an ultrarunner than one with a larger smartwatch estimate but a short high-accuracy setting.

Decide whether maps must work without a phone

Offline maps matter when you will lose cellular service, want to leave your phone in a pack, or need to confirm a junction quickly in bad weather. Look for three separate capabilities: map data stored on the watch, a route line or turn guidance, and the ability to correct a mistake. These are not interchangeable. The COROS Nomad, for example, has downloadable colour maps but the cited field review found no in-watch rerouting. The exact map package for the COROS VERTIX 2S should be checked before purchase.

Match analytics to your training style

Runners who follow load, recovery and performance trends may get more value from Polar’s Training Load Pro and Recovery Pro on the Vantage V3 than from a watch selected mainly for expedition endurance. Hikers who care about ascent rate and terrain-specific pacing may prefer the Grit X2 Pro’s Vertical Speed, 3D Speed and Hill Splitter. If you mainly need reliable track recording, route awareness and long service intervals between charges, the Suunto Vertical 2 is the simpler all-round choice.

Consider what you can read and operate outdoors

A bright, high-resolution display can make colour maps easier to interpret, while a memory-in-pixel (MIP) panel is valued for sunlight readability and low power use. The Nomad explicitly uses a MIP display. Equivalent display specifications are not established for the other models, so inspect each screen in direct sun and with gloves before committing. Physical buttons are also worth prioritising if you expect rain, cold or sweaty hands; do not assume that a touchscreen-only interaction will suit winter navigation.

Suunto Vertical 2: the strongest all-round alternative

The Suunto Vertical 2 is the clearest default recommendation for a runner or hiker who wants one watch to cover training, navigation and long trips away from a charger. Suunto states that it provides up to 65 hours of training time in the most accurate GPS mode and up to 20 days of daily smartwatch use. Those are maximum estimates: screen brightness, dual-band tracking, heart-rate sensors, notifications and temperature can all reduce actual time.

Why it stands out

  • Dual-band GPS: the second frequency is intended to improve positioning where reflections and obstructions make a single-band signal less reliable.
  • Offline maps: high-detail maps are available without a subscription according to Suunto’s product information, allowing route checks when a phone has no service.
  • Climb Guidance: the feature is designed to put climbs and descents into the context of a route, useful for pacing long trail efforts.
  • Sport coverage: more than 115 sport modes make it practical if running and hiking share the watch with cycling, skiing, swimming or other activities.

Who should buy it

Choose the Vertical 2 when your priority list reads “accurate trail tracks, maps that remain available offline and the fewest charging interruptions.” It is particularly compelling for multi-day routes and ultra-distance training where a high-accuracy 65-hour ceiling gives more margin than the 40–50-hour figures reported for some alternatives.

What to verify before ordering

  • Confirm the case size and strap fit; a large outdoor case can be uncomfortable on a smaller wrist.
  • Check which map regions can be downloaded and how much storage a planned area requires.
  • Review phone-notification, music and payment support for your phone and country. The cited product information names Strava and Komoot as partner apps, but it does not establish every phone, music or payment feature.

COROS VERTIX 2S: choose it for expedition endurance

The VERTIX 2S is positioned by COROS as an expedition GPS-watch product rather than a general smartwatch. That positioning makes it a logical Garmin alternative for climbers, long-distance trekkers and guides who value an outdoor-specific form factor and a support ecosystem built around routes and maps.

Strengths

  • Its expedition focus is more relevant than lifestyle features if the watch will spend days outdoors and be operated in difficult conditions.
  • COROS maintains comparison, map and support resources for the model, which is useful when checking route workflows before a trip.
  • It belongs on the shortlist when your decision is driven by rugged outdoor use rather than the deepest recovery dashboard.

Important buying check

No single definitive battery number or map configuration is published for every VERTIX 2S package. Verify the exact edition, map coverage, GPS mode and quoted endurance for the market where you will buy it. Do not use a retailer’s “up to” figure without checking whether it refers to standard GPS, an endurance mode or everyday smartwatch use.

Polar Vantage V3: the training-science alternative

The Polar Vantage V3 is the best fit when the watch is primarily a coach for planned running and recovery, with navigation as an important secondary function. Polar lists dual-frequency GPS, maps, Training Load Pro, Recovery Pro, wrist-based running power, performance tests, ECG, SpO2 and skin-temperature sensing.

Training features that matter

  • Training Load Pro: designed to separate the stress created by different training dimensions so you can see how hard a block has been.
  • Recovery Pro: adds recovery analysis to the training picture, helping you decide whether to push, maintain or back off.
  • Wrist-based running power: gives a power-oriented metric without requiring a separate foot pod, although power should be interpreted consistently rather than compared blindly with another device.
  • Performance tests: provide repeatable checkpoints for fitness tracking instead of relying only on daily scores.
  • ECG, SpO2 and skin temperature: broaden the physiological data available for training context. These sensors are not a substitute for medical diagnosis.

Price and fit

Polar’s European product page listed the Vantage V3 at €599.90 when accessed. That is a regional listed price at that time, not a worldwide or permanent price. Choose it over the Vertical 2 when your main question is “How is my training load and recovery changing?” rather than “How long can I navigate before charging?”

Polar Grit X2 Pro: a hiking-focused data choice

The Grit X2 Pro targets hikers and mountain athletes who want detailed terrain metrics and a durable display. TechRadar reviewer Julia Clarke, writing on 16 August 2026 after testing GPS watches on trails from the Highlands to the Himalayas, reported approximately 40–43 hours of GPS battery for this model.

Outdoor tools

  • Full-colour maps: make terrain and route context easier to parse than a simple breadcrumb line.
  • Sapphire glass: is intended to resist scratching better than ordinary mineral or polymer lenses, useful when the watch meets rock, grit or pack hardware.
  • FuelWise: provides fuelling reminders so nutrition is not left entirely to memory during long efforts.
  • Vertical Speed and 3D Speed: add ascent-rate and terrain-aware context that ordinary flat-distance pace cannot provide.
  • Hill Splitter: separates uphill and downhill work, making a mountainous session easier to review.

Battery trade-off

The 40–43-hour result is a field-review observation, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed runtime for every route. Cold temperatures, navigation, optical heart-rate tracking and display use can shorten it. If your normal outing is a day hike or a training week with regular charging, the Grit X2 Pro’s analytics may outweigh the shorter endurance. For multi-day unsupported travel, the Vertical 2’s higher high-accuracy figure leaves more reserve.

COROS Nomad: the value mapping option

The COROS Nomad is aimed at buyers who want downloadable maps and long GPS endurance without paying for every premium outdoor convenience. The cited field review reports up to 50 hours in GPS mode, a sunlight-friendly MIP display and storage for 100 routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you get

  • Colour maps: support route and terrain checks away from cellular coverage.
  • Long tracking claim: the 50-hour maximum is useful for long races and multi-day activities, subject to the selected GPS and sensor settings.
  • MIP screen: prioritises readability in bright outdoor light and efficient power use.
  • Route capacity: 100 stored routes is ample for a large personal library or several upcoming trips.

What you give up

The review specifically notes no LED torch and no in-watch rerouting. That means the Nomad can show a downloaded plan, but it is less forgiving when you deliberately leave the route or need a new path generated on the watch. Carry a headlamp for low-light travel and keep a phone or paper backup if route changes are likely.

Feature-by-feature comparison

Battery endurance

For the published figures available here, the ordering is straightforward: Suunto Vertical 2 claims up to 65 hours in its most accurate mode, COROS Nomad up to 50 hours in GPS mode, and Polar Grit X2 Pro delivered approximately 40–43 hours in a reviewer’s field test. A comparable VERTIX 2S or Vantage V3 number is not stated in the published product details. Treat all “up to” values as laboratory or manufacturer estimates unless a field result is identified.

Maps and guidance

The Vertical 2 combines high-detail offline maps with Climb Guidance. The Grit X2 Pro offers full-colour maps and terrain metrics. The Nomad stores colour maps and routes but lacks on-watch rerouting. VERTIX 2S map details depend on the exact package. Vantage V3 includes maps, while the published details emphasise its training features more than expedition navigation.

Training and recovery

Vantage V3 has the deepest explicitly listed training stack: Training Load Pro, Recovery Pro, running power and performance tests. Grit X2 Pro adds hiking-specific workload context through ascent, descent and fuelling tools. Vertical 2 covers many sports and route climbing. Nomad and VERTIX 2S are better selected for endurance and navigation priorities when you do not need Polar’s named recovery framework.

Durability and display

Sapphire glass is explicitly identified for the Grit X2 Pro, and a MIP display is explicitly identified for the Nomad. Comparable lens, water-resistance and display specifications are not established for every other model in the published details. Check the manufacturer’s exact case, lens, water rating and operating-temperature specifications for your edition before using a watch for diving, winter expeditions or technical climbing.

Phone, music, payments and route services

Outdoor watches differ more in connected features than their GPS labels suggest. Suunto’s product information identifies Strava and Komoot as partner apps, but it does not confirm every music, payment, call or notification capability across these watches. Before buying, verify compatibility with your phone operating system, the route service you already use, offline music requirements and payment availability in your country.

Decision guide by activity

Road and trail running with structured workouts

Pick the Polar Vantage V3 if training load, recovery and performance tests drive your decisions. Pick the Vertical 2 if your runs regularly leave cell coverage or extend into mountainous terrain. The Nomad is sensible when a long GPS ceiling and maps matter more than advanced recovery analysis.

Day hiking and navigation

The Vertical 2 is the safest all-round choice because its offline maps, dual-band GPS and high-accuracy endurance address the three common hiking failure points: losing signal, losing the route and running out of power. The Grit X2 Pro is attractive when ascent, descent, fuelling and terrain metrics are central to your review of each hike.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multi-day trekking and expeditions

Start with the Vertical 2 and VERTIX 2S. The Vertical 2 has the clearest published high-accuracy runtime. The VERTIX 2S deserves consideration for its expedition-specific positioning, but confirm the exact battery and map configuration before you pay. Carry a charging plan regardless of the watch: a power bank, cable and a low-power tracking option can turn a marginal trip into a safe one.

Budget-conscious mapping

The Nomad is the value-oriented pick among the models covered here. Its 50-hour GPS claim, colour maps and 100-route capacity cover the core needs of many hikers. Accept that you will not have an LED torch or on-watch rerouting, and plan around those omissions rather than discovering them on a remote trail.

How to prepare any watch for a long GPS outing

  1. Update before leaving: install watch firmware, companion-app updates and map data while you still have reliable internet and power.
  2. Load and inspect the route: download the complete area, open the route on the watch and zoom in on junctions, water crossings and likely bail-out points.
  3. Choose the tracking mode deliberately: select dual-band or dual-frequency when accuracy in difficult terrain matters; use an endurance mode only when its lower precision is acceptable.
  4. Run a short local test: record a 20–30-minute activity, follow a route segment and verify that distance, elevation and turn prompts behave as expected.
  5. Set alerts and data pages: configure lap, heart-rate, ascent or nutrition alerts before the event. Changing screens with cold or wet hands is harder than doing it at home.
  6. Protect your power margin: begin with a full charge, disable nonessential notifications and carry a charging option for trips longer than the tested runtime.
  7. Bring a second navigation method: keep a phone with its own offline map, a paper map or another approved backup. A watch is a tool, not a substitute for route planning and weather judgment.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Comparing incompatible battery numbers: a smartwatch-use estimate, standard GPS estimate and dual-band estimate describe different workloads. Compare like with like.
  • Assuming offline maps equal rerouting: a downloaded map may show your position without calculating a new route. The Nomad’s lack of in-watch rerouting is an explicit example.
  • Ignoring cold-weather losses: battery performance can fall in low temperatures, especially with a bright display and continuous sensors. Keep the watch insulated until needed.
  • Buying for sensors you will not use: ECG, SpO2, skin temperature and running power are valuable only if they answer a question in your training. Do not trade away navigation or endurance for a checklist.
  • Skipping a route rehearsal: map downloads, route limits and screen controls are easiest to learn near home, not at the first remote junction.
  • Treating review results as guarantees: the Grit X2 Pro’s 40–43-hour figure came from a reviewer’s field experience; your route and settings may produce a different result.

Which Garmin alternative should you buy?

Buy the Suunto Vertical 2 if you want the most balanced package of dual-band GPS, detailed offline maps, climbing guidance and the strongest published high-accuracy battery claim. Buy the COROS VERTIX 2S when an expedition-oriented form factor is the deciding factor, after confirming the exact specification. Choose the Polar Vantage V3 for the most explicit training-load and recovery toolkit. Choose the Polar Grit X2 Pro for colour maps, sapphire protection and mountain-specific metrics, accepting its roughly 40–43-hour field result. Choose the COROS Nomad when 50-hour GPS endurance and downloadable maps deliver what you need at a lower feature tier, and you can live without a torch or on-watch rerouting.
