Short answer: The main alternatives worth checking are Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Saily. None is proven to be the best for every trip. Choose by matching the exact countries, dates, data requirement, hotspot needs, voice/SMS expectations and total checkout price—not by a universal “cheapest” or “best” label.
What you are comparing with eRoaming
eRoaming is described in a TechRadar review dated 8 October 2026 as a UK-based travel eSIM provider that sells local, regional and global plans through its website and app. That gives travelers three basic ways to buy connectivity: a plan for one country, a bundle covering several countries in a region, or a broader global package.
The right alternative depends on the trip rather than the brand name. A single-country holiday can favor a local plan, while a multi-country itinerary may be simpler with one regional eSIM. A global plan can reduce the need to change profiles, but its included countries, data allowance, network partners and fair-use rules still need checking. The same provider can be a good fit for one itinerary and poor value for another.

Quick comparison
| Provider | What is established | Coverage information | Data and usage terms | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| eRoaming | UK-based travel eSIM provider reviewed by TechRadar on 8 October 2026; sells local, regional and global plans through a website and app. | Exact country and network lists vary by plan and must be checked. | Comparable current allowances, validity, hotspot rules and prices were not established. | Use as the baseline offer for the same itinerary. |
| Airalo | Provider result describes local, regional and global coverage. | Airalo claims coverage in 200+ locations. This is a provider claim; verify the destination list for the specific plan. | Allowance, validity, top-ups, speed policy, hotspot rules and taxes depend on the selected plan and were not established here. | Travelers who want to compare country, regional and global formats. |
| Holafly | Recent comparison coverage identifies it as an alternative and describes an unlimited-data option. | Country and regional availability must be checked for the itinerary. | Specific plan limits, hotspot allowances and fair-use conditions were not verified from an official provider page. | Users considering an unlimited-data proposition, provided the restrictions are confirmed first. |
| Nomad | Recent travel-eSIM comparison coverage identifies it as an alternative. | Destination inclusion and network partners were not established for this comparison. | Plan data, validity, top-up, speed and tethering terms must be verified on the selected offer. | Another quote to place beside eRoaming and the other candidates. |
| Saily | Recent review coverage identifies it as an alternative. TechRadar’s 2026 review result reports a provider coverage claim of 200+ destinations. | “200+ destinations” is a secondary report of a provider claim, not an independent market statistic. Confirm the actual countries in the plan. | Allowance, validity, fair-use, hotspot and voice/SMS terms were not established. | Travelers seeking a broad-destination alternative to check against the same itinerary. |
How the leading alternatives differ
Airalo: broad plan formats
Airalo’s provider result describes local, regional and global coverage across 200+ locations. Treat that figure as Airalo’s own coverage claim, not as an independent count of usable destinations. A plan advertised as regional or global can still exclude a country, use different networks in different places, or apply different data and validity terms.
When comparing Airalo with eRoaming, first select the exact countries and travel dates, then compare an equivalent plan type. A country plan versus a regional plan is not an apples-to-apples price comparison. Check whether the profile remains usable as you cross borders, whether a new plan is required, and whether top-ups extend the same service.
Holafly: an unlimited-data proposition that needs qualification
Recent comparison results describe Holafly as an unlimited-data option. “Unlimited” does not by itself establish unrestricted speed, unrestricted tethering or unlimited use of every network. The specific plan limits, hotspot allowance and fair-use conditions were not verified from an official provider page in the available material.
Before buying, look for the plan’s definition of unlimited data, any daily or total high-speed allowance, traffic-management language, supported networks and hotspot policy. If you need to connect a laptop, tablet or travel router, do not assume that a phone-only unlimited plan permits tethering.

Nomad: a comparison candidate, not a universal recommendation
Nomad appears in recent travel-eSIM comparison coverage as an alternative. The available evidence does not establish a single current destination matrix, price table or uniform set of data and tethering rules for Nomad. Those details can differ between country, regional and global products.
Use Nomad as a quote to compare on identical terms: the same countries, number of travel days, data requirement and device. Record the plan’s activation window, expiry rule, network selection method and support route before checkout.
Saily: reported broad destination coverage
TechRadar’s 2026 review result reports Saily’s provider coverage claim of “200+ destinations.” That is a secondary report of a provider statement, not an independent market statistic. Destination counts do not show how much data is included, which local networks are available or whether all countries share one validity period.
Open the destination list for the exact Saily plan and check every stop on the itinerary. Then verify hotspot use, top-ups, speed restrictions and whether the service is data-only. A broad country count is useful for discovery, but it cannot replace plan-level terms.

The checks that determine the best fit
1. Map every country and border crossing
Write down every country where the phone must connect, including transit stops if you expect to use data after landing. Confirm that each is included in the same plan. Some offers are single-country products; others are regional or global. If a country is missing, you may need a second eSIM, a new plan at the border or a different provider.
Where the provider discloses local network partners, note them. Coverage on paper does not guarantee identical service in every city, island or rural area. If no network list is shown, mark it as unknown rather than assuming the strongest local carrier is included.
2. Match the data allowance to your actual use
Classify your trip before comparing prices:
- Light use: messaging, maps, ride-hailing and occasional email, with media mostly on Wi-Fi.
- Regular use: daily navigation, social feeds, photo uploads, web browsing and some streaming.
- Heavy use: frequent video, cloud backups, remote work, large downloads or multiple connected devices.
Compare like with like. An unlimited-data label cannot be compared fairly with a fixed allowance until you know the high-speed, fair-use and hotspot rules. Conversely, a smaller fixed plan may be cheaper if you mostly use hotel or café Wi-Fi.
3. Check validity and activation timing
Validity may begin when the eSIM is installed, when it first connects to a supported network, or at another event defined by the provider. Confirm the start trigger and the number of usable days. Installing a profile at home can therefore have different consequences depending on the plan’s activation rule.

- Personal hotspot – Share your data connection across multiple devices
Also check whether the plan expires after a fixed period even if data remains, whether an extension or top-up is available, and whether a top-up preserves the same eSIM profile. Save the terms with your purchase confirmation.
4. Treat hotspot access as a separate feature
Do not infer tethering rights from the data allowance. A plan can include phone data while restricting personal hotspot use, imposing a daily cap or applying a separate fair-use rule. If you need a laptop, camera, tablet or another traveler’s phone online, confirm that hotspot is allowed and record any limit.
5. Decide whether data-only is sufficient
Many travel eSIM products are primarily data services. Check explicitly whether the offer includes a phone number, inbound or outbound voice calling, SMS, voicemail or only mobile data. If you need calls or text messages for two-factor authentication, reservations or local contacts, plan a separate method rather than assuming the eSIM supplies a local number.

6. Compare the complete checkout price
Prices are volatile and cannot be ranked reliably without checking the same itinerary and plan size at the same time. Compare the displayed total for identical travel dates, countries and data needs. Include taxes, currency conversion, payment fees and any required top-up. A low headline price can be misleading if it covers fewer days or less high-speed data.

Local, regional or global: which plan structure fits?
Choose a local plan when one country dominates
A local plan is easiest to evaluate when your trip stays in one country. You can compare the allowance, validity and network directly against local usage. It may also avoid paying for countries you will never visit. The trade-off is that a second country usually requires another plan unless the provider explicitly includes roaming across borders.
Choose a regional plan for a connected multi-country route
A regional plan can reduce profile changes while moving between neighboring countries. Confirm that every stop is included, not just the region’s most popular destinations. Check whether the allowance is shared across countries, whether validity runs continuously, and whether network performance or hotspot policy changes by country.
Choose a global plan for breadth, not automatically for value
A global plan can make sense for a long itinerary spanning several regions or for a traveler who does not want to buy multiple profiles. It may cost more than a carefully assembled set of local plans, and its country list and data terms still require verification. Compare the total cost and usable allowance for your actual stops rather than the size of the advertised coverage map.

| Question | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Countries included | Every destination and transit country; note exclusions. | One missing country can force a second plan. |
| Plan structure | Local, regional or global; whether border crossings stay on the same profile. | Determines convenience and total cost. |
| Data | Included amount or unlimited definition; high-speed and fair-use language. | Prevents an “unlimited” plan from being misunderstood. |
| Validity | Number of days and the event that starts the clock. | Protects against early activation or an unexpected expiry. |
| Top-up | Available or unavailable; price and whether the same profile remains active. | Important when usage is uncertain. |
| Hotspot | Allowed, blocked or capped; daily or total limit. | Essential for laptops and shared connections. |
| Voice and SMS | Phone number, calling, texting or data-only status. | Determines how you handle calls and verification codes. |
| Networks | Named local partners, automatic selection and manual-selection options. | Can affect coverage and troubleshooting. |
| Price | Final checkout total in your payment currency, including taxes or fees. | Creates a fair comparison. |
| Support | Contact method, hours and setup documentation. | Useful if activation fails abroad. |
Purchase and setup checklist
- Confirm device compatibility. Make sure the phone supports eSIM, is not carrier-locked, and has a free eSIM slot or profile allowance. Check that the device’s cellular bands and operating-system version are supported by the provider.
- Buy before departure if possible. Downloading a profile normally requires an internet connection. Keep the order email, QR code or in-app installation details available offline.
- Install without accidentally activating. On iPhone, the common path is Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data > Add eSIM. On Android, labels vary, but the path is typically Settings > Network & internet/SIMs > Add SIM > Download an eSIM. Follow the provider’s activation instructions because the validity clock may start at installation or first connection.
- Label the profiles. Name the travel line by country or provider so you can distinguish it from your primary SIM. Keep the primary line available for calls only if your carrier’s roaming charges are understood.
- Select the travel line for data. In cellular or SIM settings, choose the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line. Enable data roaming on that line only when the provider requires it; leave roaming off on the primary line if you want to avoid accidental charges.
- Test after landing. Turn the travel line on, allow a short connection period, then test a webpage or map. Confirm that the phone shows the expected network and that the data counter is moving on the travel profile.
- Keep the original profile until the trip ends. Deleting an eSIM can make reinstallation difficult, especially without Wi-Fi or the original QR code.
Troubleshooting common failures
The eSIM will not install
- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi and retry the QR-code or in-app installation.
- Check that the device is eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked and not at its profile limit.
- Verify that the QR code has not already been used if the provider permits one-time installation.
- Do not delete a partially installed profile before contacting support; the provider may need its installation status.
The phone shows signal but has no internet
- Confirm that the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data.
- Check whether data roaming must be enabled for that line.
- Disable automatic switching to the primary SIM for mobile data.
- Use an APN only if the provider supplies exact APN values; do not guess.
- Restart the phone and test again before changing network settings.
Service disappears after crossing a border
- Recheck that the new country is included in the plan.
- Allow the phone to select a network automatically, then try a supported network manually if the provider lists one.
- Confirm that the regional or global plan has not expired or exhausted its allowance.
Hotspot does not work
- Review the plan’s tethering terms; hotspot may be blocked or capped even when phone data works.
- Turn hotspot off and on, then reconnect the secondary device.
- If a cap has been reached, use Wi-Fi or buy a plan that explicitly supports tethering.
Speeds are lower than expected
- Check fair-use or traffic-management language, especially on unlimited-data offers.
- Test another supported network only when the provider allows manual selection.
- Move outdoors or to an area with stronger local coverage; an eSIM cannot overcome a weak radio signal.
How to make the final choice
Start with the itinerary, not the marketing label. For a one-country trip, compare a local plan from eRoaming, Airalo, Holafly, Nomad or Saily on the same number of days and similar data need. For several countries, compare matching regional plans and verify every border crossing. For a long, varied route, add global plans only if their included countries and total cost justify the convenience.
Give extra weight to hotspot permission, validity start, fair-use language and voice/SMS requirements. Those details can change the practical value more than a small difference in headline price. Because no matched current price table or complete destination matrix was established for all five services, avoid declaring one provider universally cheapest or best; make the decision from the completed worksheet for your own trip.
