There is no single replacement for ENS. Choose SPACE ID when you need one management layer for names on multiple supported chains, Solana Name Service (SNS) for a Solana-first .sol identity, Unstoppable Domains for its separate commercial blockchain-domain ecosystem, and Handshake if you are prepared to operate an alternative DNS root with dedicated resolver or gateway support. Keep ENS when Ethereum-native records, reverse resolution, subnames, and broad Ethereum application compatibility are the deciding requirements.
The right choice for payments is the namespace that your recipient’s wallet can resolve reliably. A readable name is only useful when the sender’s wallet, the selected chain, and the name’s current address records all agree.
What an ENS .eth name actually does
Ethereum Name Service is an Ethereum-native naming protocol. A name can point to an Ethereum address, addresses on other cryptocurrency networks, content hashes, metadata, and a reverse-resolution record that lets an address identify itself by name. ENS also supports DNS imports, subnames, decentralized websites, and Sign-In with Ethereum.
That combination makes an .eth name more than a payment alias. It can be a username for decentralized applications, a pointer to content, and an identity record that applications read without asking you to paste a hexadecimal address. ENS describes names as “domains, NFTs, and usernames for your digital identity across the internet.”

Alternatives differ because they optimize different parts of that job. Some are designed around one chain, some around a multi-chain discovery layer, and others around a separate naming root or commercial domain system. Before comparing labels, decide whether you need an address book for one network, a cross-chain identity, a browser-resolvable domain, or a name that can be managed by developer tools.

SPACE ID: the multi-chain management option
SPACE ID’s documentation presents a universal name-service network and a one-stop identity platform. In practical terms, its appeal is operational: one interface can help you discover, register, trade and manage names across the chains and namespaces it supports, while its SDK and API offerings give developers a way to add name search or resolution to an application.
When SPACE ID is a good fit
- You operate wallets or communities on more than one supported chain and want a consolidated naming workflow.
- You are building a wallet, exchange interface or dApp that needs programmable name discovery rather than a single-chain lookup.
- You want marketplace and management functions in the same ecosystem instead of moving between unrelated registries.
What to check before registering
“Multi-chain” does not mean that every name resolves to every network. Check the exact namespace, chain, coin type and wallet integrations available for the name you want. A wallet may display a name but support only one payment network, or it may resolve a name for profile display while refusing to use it as a transfer destination.

Build a fallback that shows the full address before a transaction is signed.
Solana Name Service: the .sol choice
Solana Name Service describes .sol names as secure, pseudo-anonymous identities and as a bridge from familiar Web2 naming to Web3. It is the natural alternative when most of your activity, collectibles and payments are on Solana and your audience already uses Solana wallets.
Why Solana users choose SNS
- A .sol label is easier to recognize than a long Solana public key.
- Solana-focused applications can use the name as a profile or payment identifier.
- A pseudo-anonymous label can separate a public wallet identity from a legal name, provided your on-chain activity does not reveal it.
Where .sol is not a drop-in ENS replacement
A .sol name is not automatically an address record for Ethereum, Bitcoin or other networks. If you receive payments on several chains, you need a wallet or application that explicitly supports those records, or separate names for each ecosystem. Before sending funds, verify that the wallet’s send screen resolves the .sol name and that the displayed network is Solana rather than an unrelated asset network.

Unstoppable Domains: a separate commercial ecosystem
Unstoppable Domains is not simply another ENS registrar. It is a separate blockchain-domain ecosystem. The ICANN Office of the Chief Technology Officer’s 2022 survey identified it as Polygon-based and reported more than 2,100,000 registrations at that time.
That historical figure indicates substantial adoption, but it is not a current user count and does not establish that every extension, wallet or chain remains supported today. Product policies can change, so verify the exact domain’s chain, whether registration is one-time or renewable, transfer rules, wallet integrations and support for payment records before relying on it.
When this ecosystem may suit you
Choose it when your community already uses its extensions and wallets, or when you specifically want its commercial marketplace and application integrations. It can be useful for a branded identity that lives outside the ENS naming system, but the name’s value depends on recognition in the wallets your recipients use.
Questions to ask about a specific name
- Is the name minted on the chain currently documented for that extension?
- Is ownership held in your wallet, and can the name be transferred without a platform account?
- Are renewals required, or is the purchase a one-time registration?
- Which wallets resolve it for each supported payment asset?
- Can you export or edit address records without relying on a proprietary interface?
Handshake: an alternative DNS root
Handshake uses HNS and an independent naming system rather than extending the conventional DNS root. The 2022 ICANN technical survey reported more than 3,500,000 Handshake domains registered over time. Handshake names can be censorship-resistant within their system, but ordinary browsers and wallets do not necessarily resolve them by default.
How resolution works
A user may need a resolver configured to query Handshake, a browser extension, or a gateway that translates the name for conventional web access. Different gateways can apply different policies, so the same name may be reachable for one user and unavailable for another. This is a technical deployment choice, not a defect that a wallet setting always fixes.

Handshake is best for technically experienced operators who control their resolver environment, run infrastructure, or accept that visitors may need setup instructions. It is a poor choice for a mass-market payment alias unless you have tested the exact wallet and gateway path used by your customers.

How to choose an alternative for identity and payments
1. Start with the chains you actually use
List every network on which you receive funds. A single-chain identity is often clearer and safer than a nominally multi-chain name whose records are incomplete. If Ethereum is your primary environment and you need reverse records, subnames or Sign-In with Ethereum, ENS remains the most direct fit. If Solana is the center of activity, SNS avoids adding an unnecessary cross-chain layer.
2. Confirm one-name, many-address support
Ask whether the registry lets one name hold separate records for Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin or other networks, and whether your preferred wallets read those records. Do not infer support from a marketing phrase such as universal or multi-chain. A record can exist in a registry while a wallet ignores it.
3. Test the payment path with a small amount
Use the exact wallet and asset your payer will use. Enter the name, inspect the resolved address and network, compare the first and last characters with the recipient’s published address, and send a small test transaction before a larger transfer. A name that resolves correctly in a block explorer may still fail in a mobile wallet with a different resolver.

Renewable names can be cheaper initially but create an expiration risk. A missed renewal can leave a payment alias pointing nowhere or allow another party to register it after a grace period. One-time ownership removes recurring renewal tasks but may still involve network fees, marketplace fees or transfer restrictions. Record the renewal date or custody details in the same operational system you use for wallet backups.
5. Consider browser and application reach
ENS and other blockchain namespaces are not automatically equivalent to ordinary websites. Some applications resolve names natively; others require a browser extension, a gateway or a local resolver. Ask how a first-time payer will reach your name without special instructions. For a public website, keep a conventional domain or a documented gateway even if the decentralized name is your canonical identity.
6. Evaluate developer access
For a product integration, require documented APIs or SDKs, testnet behavior, rate limits, ownership and expiry fields, and a clear error when a record is missing. Cache only for a bounded period and refresh before displaying a payment destination. Your interface should show the resolved address and network so users can detect a wrong-chain selection.

Using a Web3 name safely for a payment
- Ask for the exact asset and network. “Send USDC” is incomplete if the recipient accepts it on more than one chain.
- Enter the name in a wallet that documents support for that namespace. If the wallet treats the name as plain text, stop rather than guessing.
- Inspect the resolved destination. Confirm the address, network badge and asset. For a multi-chain record, select the intended network explicitly.
- Compare an independently supplied address. Use a verified invoice, a second channel or the recipient’s published address. This catches a changed record, a poisoned front end or a look-alike name.
- Send a small test transaction. Wait for confirmation on the correct chain before sending the full amount.
- Save the transaction hash and name resolution details. A name can be edited later; the transaction hash is the durable payment record.
Never treat a successful name lookup as proof that the recipient controls the name. Ownership, resolver records and payment addresses are separate facts that a wallet should display clearly.
Cross-chain identity: convenience versus ambiguity
A cross-chain identity is useful when one human or organization maintains accounts on several networks. The safest model stores a distinct address for each network and labels each record. A name that returns one address without identifying the network invites a wrong-chain transfer.
Cross-chain systems also create social ambiguity. Two people can register similar labels in different namespaces, and a user may recognize the text while missing the extension. Display the complete name, including its suffix, and provide a copyable address or QR code as a secondary check.
Alternative namespaces can require specialized bridges, local settings or gateways. The ICANN Office of the Chief Technology Officer warned that weak coordination can produce collisions and fragmented ecosystems, describing alternative naming systems as facing “a huge deployment challenge” and saying this is “the exact opposite of the vision of ‘one world, one Internet.’” Those observations matter for identity: a name that is globally unique inside one registry may not be unique across all naming systems.

Control the wallet that owns the name
Register or receive the name in a wallet whose seed phrase or hardware backup you control. A registrar account, email login or marketplace profile may help with discovery, but it should not be the only recovery path for an on-chain name.
Separate ownership from resolution
Ownership determines who can transfer or edit a name. Resolver records determine where applications send users. If those controls are split, review both after every transfer, migration or contract upgrade. Remove old payment addresses and test the new records before publishing the name again.

Protect privacy intentionally
Public records make payments easier but can connect multiple wallets to one identity. Use a separate name for a public business profile if you do not want every personal holding associated with it. Pseudo-anonymity is not anonymity: blockchain activity, social profiles and repeated payment patterns can still identify the controller.
Browser reach, censorship resistance and practical availability
Censorship resistance is a property of the registry and its resolution path, not a guarantee that every application will display the name. A wallet provider, browser, exchange or gateway can choose not to support a namespace. Conversely, a gateway can make a name easy to reach while introducing a centralized operator that can block or alter access.
For customer-facing payments, publish the namespace and the supported wallets, provide a conventional fallback address, and keep instructions current. For decentralized publishing, test access from at least one native resolver and one ordinary browser path. Document what users should see when resolution fails instead of encouraging them to bypass a warning.
Migration and using more than one namespace
You do not have to abandon ENS when adopting an alternative. Many teams keep an ENS name as an Ethereum identity and add a .sol or other namespace for a chain-specific community. Treat each name as a separate security boundary: verify ownership, configure records, and publish the full suffix wherever it appears.
During migration, leave the old name pointing to a clearly marked transition address only as long as necessary. Update invoices, profile links, payment buttons and developer configuration together. Announce the change through a channel that attackers cannot edit, and include the new full name plus an independently verified address.
Common failure modes and fixes
- The wallet says the name is invalid: use a wallet with native support or its documented resolver; do not replace the name with an unverified search result.
- The name resolves but to the wrong network: select the asset and chain explicitly, then compare the address with a second source.
- A previously working name stops resolving: check expiration, resolver records, ownership transfers and gateway status.
- Recipients cannot open the decentralized site: provide the required resolver or gateway instructions and maintain a conventional web fallback.
- A similar name appears in search: display the complete suffix, verify the owner and use a copyable address or QR code.
- A developer integration returns stale data: shorten cache duration, refresh before payment, and surface record age or expiry to the user.
Bottom line: which ENS alternative should you choose?
Choose SPACE ID for a multi-chain management and developer-integration priority, after confirming the exact chains and wallets you need. Choose Solana Name Service for a Solana-centered .sol identity. Consider Unstoppable Domains when its separate ecosystem already matches your audience, but verify current support and ownership rules rather than relying on the 2022 snapshot. Choose Handshake when you want an alternative-root model and can operate resolvers or gateways. Keep ENS when Ethereum-native records, reverse resolution, subnames and Ethereum application compatibility are more important than adopting another namespace.
