Use a detergent made for the surface and the pressure washer. For cars, choose a mild, non-caustic vehicle detergent labeled for pressure-washer use. For siding, decks, brick, concrete, and similar areas, choose an exterior cleaner whose label specifically names that substrate. Prefer phosphate-free or biodegradable formulas, follow both labels for dilution and dwell time, and keep contaminated wash water out of storm drains.
Ordinary dish soap is not a universal substitute. Its compatibility with an injector, surface finish, dilution, and wastewater requirements varies, and the available authoritative sources do not establish one dish-soap brand or homemade recipe as superior for every pressure-washing job.
What to use instead of dish soap
The safest choice depends on what you are washing:
| Job | Best detergent category | What to verify before use |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle paint, glass, trim, and wheels | Mild, non-caustic vehicle detergent formulated to pass through a pressure washer | Vehicle-finish approval, injector or downstream-injector compatibility, dilution, and rinse directions |
| Vinyl or painted siding | Exterior house wash labeled for the siding material | Approved substrates, dwell time, plant protection, and required rinsing |
| Pressure-treated or composite decking | Deck cleaner labeled for the exact decking type | Wood or composite approval, oxidizer warnings, dwell time, and neutralization or rinse requirements |
| Brick, concrete, driveways, and fences | Masonry or concrete cleaner labeled for those surfaces | Surface restrictions, dilution, runoff controls, and whether a post-rinse is required |
| Environmental screening | Phosphate-free, biodegradable, or EPA Safer Choice products where available | Current label, ingredient disclosure, aquatic-toxicity information, pH, and outdoor-use designation |
There is no responsible universal dilution ratio. A concentrate may be intended for a downstream injector, a detergent tank, a pump sprayer, or direct application, and those uses are not interchangeable. Read the product label and the pressure-washer manual together.
Why ordinary dish soap is a poor universal choice
Dish detergents are designed for hand-washing dishes, not necessarily for a pressure-washer pump, injector, painted vehicle finish, wood coating, masonry, or outdoor wastewater. A product can produce abundant suds yet still be unsuitable for an injector or damaging to a particular finish.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Equipment compatibility: The machine manual may prohibit corrosive, flammable, volatile, or otherwise unsuitable liquids. A detergent that can be used in a bucket is not automatically approved for pressure-washer injection.
- Surface compatibility: Cars, painted siding, composite boards, pressure-treated wood, brick, and concrete have different cleaners and dwell-time requirements.
- Cleaning target: Road film, grease, algae, mildew, and embedded soil need different chemistry. More foam does not prove better cleaning.
- Runoff: Wash water can carry detergents, soaps, phosphates, oil, grease, metals, cleaners, and road salts into storm drains.
- Label evidence: The authoritative sources available for this topic do not establish a generic dish detergent as universally approved for exterior pressure washing.
Use dish soap only if the pressure-washer manufacturer and the detergent label explicitly permit that product and application. Otherwise, select a purpose-formulated cleaner.
How to choose a pressure-washer detergent
1. Match the label to the substrate
Look for the exact material on the label: vehicle finish, vinyl siding, painted wood, pressure-treated wood, composite decking, brick, concrete, driveway, or fence. “Multi-surface” is meaningful only when the label lists the surfaces and gives directions for each one.
2. Confirm machine and injector compatibility
Check whether the product is intended for pressure-washer use and whether your machine uses a detergent tank, upstream injector, downstream injector, or another system. The manual controls what may enter the pump. Never assume that a product suitable for a pump sprayer can be drawn through a pressure washer.
3. Screen the formulation
Prefer mild, non-caustic formulas for vehicles and phosphate-free, biodegradable products when available. EPA Safer Choice evaluates every ingredient in a certified product through a scientific review; some products also carry an outdoor-use designation. Look for the Safer Choice label, full ingredient disclosure, biodegradability information, aquatic-toxicity information, fragrance details, and a pH appropriate to the task.
4. Read the use directions completely
Record the label’s dilution, application method, dwell time, temperature limits, required rinse, and restrictions. Concentrates can be dangerous or ineffective when mixed by guesswork. Do not transfer instructions from one product to another.
5. Plan runoff before you start
Identify nearby storm drains, ditches, ponds, wells, and garden beds. Block or divert contaminated flow where local rules require it, and keep detergent from entering drinking-water pathways. Protect vegetation and test an inconspicuous area before treating a large surface.

Best alternative for washing cars
Use a vehicle detergent, not a household degreaser
EPA auto-repair guidance recommends a mild, non-caustic detergent and high-pressure, low-volume vehicle washing. It also advises avoiding oil-emulsifying cleaning solutions for routine vehicle washing. A Landa catalog lists a vehicle wash-and-wax detergent formulated to pass through pressure-washer equipment, illustrating the type of product to seek: a vehicle-specific formula with pressure-washer directions.
Choose a detergent that identifies the vehicle finish or exterior vehicle washing as an intended use. “Biodegradable” alone does not prove that a product is safe for clear coat, trim, rubber, wheels, or an injector; check the label and safety data sheet.
Car-washing procedure
- Read both labels. Confirm that the detergent is approved for pressure-washer use and for the vehicle surfaces you will clean.
- Control the work area. Move the vehicle away from storm drains when practical. Plan where the wash water will go before applying detergent.
- Rinse loose grit first. Use clean water to remove loose soil so you do not drag abrasive particles across the finish.
- Prepare the detergent exactly as directed. Use the specified tank or injector and the stated dilution. Do not add bleach, ammonia, solvents, or another cleaner.
- Apply from a safe distance. Work methodically over a cool surface and avoid forcing spray into bearings, seals, electrical connectors, or damaged paint.
- Respect dwell time. Keep the surface wet for the label’s stated period without allowing detergent to dry.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove detergent from paint, glass, trim, wheels, and crevices. Follow any label instruction for a final rinse or drying step.
- Inspect the runoff. If it is carrying visible oil, grease, or heavy soil toward a drain, stop and contain or redirect it according to local requirements.
What to avoid on vehicles
- Solvent-heavy or oil-emulsifying degreasers for routine washing.
- Unlabeled homemade mixtures injected into the machine.
- Strong oxidizers or caustic cleaners that do not expressly approve vehicle finishes.
- Any product whose safety data sheet or label warns against the pressure-washer equipment you own.
Best alternatives for houses and siding
Choose an exterior cleaner labeled for the siding
House siding may be vinyl, painted wood, fiber cement, stucco, metal, or another finish. Select a cleaner that names the actual substrate. An exterior product can be appropriate for one siding type and unsuitable for another, even when both are called “house wash.”
For example, an EPA registration record for Mold Armor E-Z House Wash and E-Z Deck, Concrete & Driveway Wash identifies pressure-washer concentrates for buildings, decks, concrete, driveways, fences, and brick. The record lists sodium hypochlorite at 5.25% as the active ingredient. That is a product-specific fact, not a reason to put household bleach into a machine or to assume every siding cleaner has the same chemistry.
Oxidizing house washes need extra controls
Products containing sodium hypochlorite can affect plants, metals, coatings, and some finishes. Before use:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Read the label for approved substrates and required protective equipment.
- Wet and shield nearby vegetation as the label directs.
- Cover or avoid sensitive metal fixtures, outdoor fabrics, and electrical components.
- Test an inconspicuous patch and watch for color change or finish damage.
- Observe the exact dwell time; do not let the solution dry unless the label expressly permits it.
- Rinse the surface and surrounding areas as directed, while managing runoff.
Siding-washing procedure
- Close windows and doors, move outdoor furniture, and identify plants, drains, and water pathways.
- Inspect the siding for loose paint, failed caulk, cracks, or openings where water could enter.
- Apply the labeled detergent at the specified dilution using the approved pressure-washer method.
- Work in small sections from the lower-risk area toward the rinse point so no section dries unexpectedly.
- Keep spray and detergent away from openings, vents, and electrical equipment.
- Rinse completely with clean water and verify that no cleaner remains in seams or trim.
Best alternatives for decks
Separate wood and composite requirements
Pressure-treated wood, painted wood, stained wood, and composite decking do not share one universal cleaner. Use a deck product whose label names your material. A cleaner that removes mildew from an unfinished board may strip a stain, lighten a pigment, or leave residue on a composite surface.

Start with the least aggressive labeled method. Protect adjacent plants and metal hardware, test a hidden area, and follow the product’s dwell and rinse instructions. Keep the spray moving and avoid concentrating pressure at board edges, joints, fasteners, and damaged coating.
Deck-washing procedure
- Sweep away leaves and loose debris.
- Check the label for wood or composite approval and any required pre-wetting.
- Prepare the detergent at the stated dilution; do not substitute bleach, ammonia, vinegar, or another chemical.
- Protect vegetation, furniture, metal hardware, and nearby finished surfaces.
- Apply to a manageable section and observe the stated dwell time without allowing the product to dry.
- Rinse along the grain or in the direction recommended by the label, using only the pressure and distance appropriate for the material.
- Inspect for remaining residue, raised fibers, color change, or coating damage before proceeding.
Concrete, brick, driveways, and fences
Hard exterior surfaces often hold algae, mildew, grease, rust, and ground-in soil. Select a masonry, concrete, driveway, or fence cleaner that names the surface and the specific soil it addresses. A product registered for concrete is not automatically approved for painted metal or wood.
The E-Z Deck, Concrete & Driveway Wash registration described above lists decks, concrete, driveways, fences, brick, and buildings among its approved uses. Follow the current label for dilution, contact time, protective measures, and rinsing. Oxidizing products can still affect plants, metals, and nearby finishes despite being labeled for hard surfaces.

EPA materials discuss household chemicals such as vinegar, baking soda, borax, ammonia, and bleach and warn that homemade cleaners can be hazardous. EPA specifically states that combining bleach and ammonia generates toxic chloramine gas. Never mix those chemicals, and never combine a product with another cleaner unless the label explicitly permits it.
An EPA green-cleaning brochure includes limited household recipes using perfume-free biodegradable liquid soap or detergent. Those recipes are not a blanket endorsement for pressure-washer injection, exterior siding, decks, vehicles, or every other surface. A recipe that is acceptable for hand cleaning may foam excessively, lack injector compatibility, leave residue, or have no approval for the finish you are treating.
If you choose a homemade solution for a small hand-cleaning task, keep it out of the pressure washer unless both the equipment manual and the chemical instructions approve that use. Commercially formulated products generally provide clearer surface directions, hazard communication, and dosing instructions.

Environmental protection and runoff
Why runoff matters
EPA’s vehicle-washing bulletin identifies oil, grease, metals, phosphates, soaps, detergents, cleaners, and road salts among contaminants that can enter wash water. The bulletin estimates 7,200 carwash wells in the United States in a 2001 context and recommends phosphate-free, biodegradable detergents to reduce contamination entering storm drains.
Pressure washing can move a large contaminant load quickly. “Green,” “natural,” and “eco-safe” on a package are not proof by themselves. Check for a credible ecolabel, such as EPA Safer Choice, and consider biodegradability, aquatic toxicity, pH, fragrance, ingredient disclosure, and the product’s outdoor-use directions.
Runoff checklist
- Locate storm drains before starting.
- Use barriers, absorbent materials, diversion, or collection where local rules require containment.
- Keep detergent and dirty water away from ponds, streams, wells, and drinking-water pathways.
- Do not wash oil or grease into a drain simply because the water looks diluted.
- Use the minimum detergent and application area needed to complete the job.
- Follow local disposal requirements for collected wash water and contaminated absorbents.
Pressure-washer safety rules
Equipment instructions take priority over a detergent’s marketing claims. A Simpson pressure-washer manual warns: “Pressure washing with volatile, flammable, or corrosive liquids could cause pressure washer damage, fire, or explosion resulting in severe injury or death.” Treat that warning as a hard stop.
- Never put a volatile, flammable, or corrosive liquid into the machine when the manual prohibits it.
- Never mix bleach and ammonia; toxic chloramine gas can form.
- Use ventilation and protective equipment required by the product label and safety data sheet.
- Keep chemical containers identified; do not pour a concentrate into an unmarked bottle.
- Stop if the pump, hose, injector, or fittings show leaks, unusual heat, or chemical damage.
- Flush the system with clean water only when the equipment and detergent instructions call for flushing.
How to compare two candidate cleaners
When two products appear suitable, compare them in this order:
- Surface approval: Does the label name the exact material and finish?
- Equipment approval: Is pressure-washer or injector use explicitly described?
- Cleaning target: Does it address your soil, such as road film, algae, mildew, grease, or embedded dirt?
- Application directions: Are dilution, dwell time, temperature, and rinse instructions clear?
- Runoff profile: Is it phosphate-free or biodegradable, and does it provide aquatic-toxicity or outdoor-use information?
- Post-treatment: Does the label require neutralization, a second rinse, or special disposal?
If a candidate fails at the first two checks, do not compensate by reducing the concentration or increasing pressure. Select a different product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon mistakes and fixes
“It makes lots of foam, so it must be working.”
Foam is not a performance or compatibility test. Stop judging by suds and use the label’s surface approval, cleaning target, and rinse directions.

“Biodegradable means safe for any surface.”
Biodegradability addresses environmental breakdown, not clear-coat safety, wood-finish compatibility, corrosion, or injector approval. Verify all of those separately.
“A stronger mix will clean faster.”
Over-concentration can damage finishes, increase runoff contamination, and violate the product directions. Use the stated dilution and dwell time.
“If a cleaner works in a garden sprayer, it can go in the pressure washer.”
Application equipment is part of the approval. Consult the pressure-washer manual and the chemical label before connecting or injecting anything.
Recommended Free Tools
“Rinsing toward the street is harmless.”
Street drains can carry wash water directly to waterways. Plan containment or diversion before washing, especially when the water contains detergent, oil, grease, metals, or road salt.
A practical decision rule
For a car, buy a mild pressure-washer vehicle detergent. For a house or deck, buy a substrate-labeled exterior cleaner. Choose phosphate-free or biodegradable options, and use an EPA Safer Choice outdoor-use product when its current listing and surface label fit the job. If a product lacks clear surface or equipment directions, do not improvise with dish soap or a homemade mixture. The safest alternative is the one whose label, machine manual, and runoff plan all agree.
