The best replacement for a discontinued online game depends on what you actually lost: matchmaking, creator tools, a co-op routine, an asymmetric ruleset, or a persistent world. Start by identifying that feature, then check the exact PlayStation or Xbox generation and the candidate game’s current service status. A similar genre alone does not make an equivalent replacement.
The games below are starting points rather than universal substitutes. Their platform and service references reflect listings and notices checked on October 13, 2026; online games can change or close later.
First determine what stopped working
“The servers shut down” can describe several different outcomes. A publisher may remove only user-created content, disable matchmaking while leaving solo play, retire one console edition, or close every online account service. The remedy is different in each case.
Matchmaking or multiplayer servers
If matchmaking, dedicated servers, or co-op sessions are gone, the campaign and local modes may still work. Look for an official notice that names the mode, platform and date instead of assuming the entire game is unusable.

User-created content and sharing
Creator servers can disappear while the authored campaign remains. PlayStation’s notice for inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS Festival of Blood scheduled the PS3 user-generated-content servers to end on August 31, 2026. The notice says, “Offline features, including the main campaign, will remain playable.” Published creations and upload, browsing or download functions are the parts affected.
Account, store or entitlement services
A game can remain downloadable but lose login, inventories, purchases or other network-dependent functions. Sony says previous purchases can still be downloaded for the foreseeable future, subject to each title’s existing online features and service availability. A successful download therefore does not prove that multiplayer works.
One version or console generation
Shutdown notices are title- and platform-specific. An EA service update, for example, listed Battlefield Hardline for PS4 and Xbox One with a June 22, 2026 end date while giving different dates to other older console titles. Do not apply that date to a PC release, a newer console edition or another game in the series without a matching notice.
Offline transition instead of a permanent loss
Some publishers plan to preserve part of a game in a new offline form. Bandai Namco’s September 26, 2026 notice for SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada says its online PvPvE service will end and an offline-exclusive PvE extraction-shooter version is planned. The notice listed save-data transfer in December 2026 and a service transition after May 2027 as scheduled milestones. Those are plans, not evidence that the transition has already happened; check the latest announcement before buying or deleting anything.
Match the replacement to the lost experience
Write down the activity you want to continue before looking at a store page. This prevents a familiar name, theme or genre label from outweighing the feature that made the original valuable.
- Name the core loop. Examples include four-player co-op missions, a competitive sports-like match, an asymmetric hunter-versus-survivors round, a battle royale, a persistent loot-and-build shooter, or sharing user-made levels.
- Separate social needs from rules. You may miss a regular group, proximity voice chat, public lobbies or a creator community more than the combat system. A replacement can match one dimension and fail another.
- Record the original player count and team structure. “Online multiplayer” is too broad. Note whether you played solo with strangers, fixed co-op teams, large shared worlds, or one-versus-many matches.
- Check the exact hardware. Confirm PS4 versus PS5, Xbox One versus Xbox Series X|S, backward compatibility, required editions and regional availability. A listing on one generation does not establish support on every generation.
- Verify cross-play and cross-progression separately. Cross-play lets people on different systems join a session; cross-progression concerns saves, inventory and unlocks. A guide that calls a game cross-platform does not establish that every mode, account type or generation shares progress.
- Check the access model and current service notice. Confirm whether the current edition is paid, free-to-play, included in a subscription or split across expansions. Then read the publisher’s latest support page for maintenance, sunset or migration information.
Use the candidate list as a shortlisting tool, not a promise of longevity. Any live service can change its modes, population, pricing or platform support.
Current alternatives to investigate
The table summarizes the candidates identified in a 2026 cross-platform guide and Microsoft’s Xbox online-multiplayer listing. “Not stated” means the cited material did not establish a value; verify it on the current store or official game page before purchase.

Sea of Thieves: for a shared adventure routine
Choose this direction when the missing ingredient was a social expedition: meeting friends, sailing together, handling different jobs and generating stories in a shared world. It is a more useful comparison for a co-op adventure than for a tightly balanced arena or a creator-level platform.
It will not recreate the original maps, progression, combat or community. The cited platform list names PS5 and Xbox One/Series X|S, so a PS4 owner should not assume that a PS5 listing covers the older console. Confirm the current PlayStation edition, Xbox entitlement, cross-play settings and any subscription requirement at the time of installation.
Rocket League: for short, repeatable competitive matches
This is the closest candidate when the lost appeal was an immediately readable arcade sports loop, mechanical mastery and quick rematches. The cited guide lists PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and identifies cross-play.
It is not a substitute for a story campaign, a large persistent world or user-created missions. Before committing, check which playlists are active, whether your friends’ platforms can join the same party and whether account progression carries across systems.

Dead by Daylight: for asymmetric multiplayer tension
Consider this when the original revolved around unequal roles, pursuit, escape and repeated rounds rather than conventional team deathmatch. Its survival-horror framing can preserve the tension of one player controlling a threat while others coordinate under pressure.
Asymmetric balance, character rosters, maps and matchmaking populations are specific to this game. Verify the current PlayStation and Xbox editions, supported modes and cross-play policy; a broad “PlayStation and Xbox” listing does not establish that every generation has identical features.
Fortnite: for a broad battle-royale ecosystem
This is a starting point for players who primarily want a large competitive shooter ecosystem, rotating activities and cross-platform competition. The cited material treats it as a cross-platform example and the Xbox listing includes it.
Do not infer that its building rules, camera feel, weapon model, events or creator tools match another battle royale. Confirm the specific console version and the current mode you want; live-service playlists can be added, replaced or retired independently.
Apex Legends: for squad-focused shooter combat
Use this candidate when the defining feature was a team-based competitive shooter with distinct character abilities and battle-royale structure. It may fit better than a generic action game if coordinated squad play was the reason you kept returning.
Its legends, map rotation, ranked rules and progression are not interchangeable with another shooter. Check the current console listings, input-policy rules and cross-play behavior before assuming that a friend on another platform can join every activity.
Destiny 2: for a persistent shooter activity mix
This is the option to investigate when you miss a long-running shooter with repeatable activities, equipment progression and a continuing world rather than one isolated match type. It appears in both the cited cross-platform guide and Microsoft’s Xbox online-multiplayer listing.
A persistent game can demand more storage, updates and account management than a discontinued match-based title. Confirm which campaigns, expansions and activities are currently accessible on your console, what transfers between platforms and whether the activity you want is still supported.

Which games still have online multiplayer on PS5, PS4 or Xbox?
The dated check above establishes that the cited listings included Sea of Thieves, Rocket League, Fortnite and Destiny 2 for Xbox online multiplayer, while the cross-platform guide listed those examples plus Dead by Daylight and Apex Legends. It does not guarantee continued operation, a particular mode, or support for every console generation.
For a purchase decision, perform a second check:
- Open the current PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store page for your exact console model and region.
- Read the publisher’s service-status or support page for planned maintenance, sunset notices and account requirements.
- Look for a recent news date, not only an old store description.
- Test whether your friends’ systems are included in cross-play and whether the desired mode permits it.
- Check download size, required updates and any subscription or expansion requirement shown for your edition.
What to do when the original still works offline
Do not replace a game merely because one network feature ended. In inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS Festival of Blood, the PS3 campaigns remain playable after the scheduled user-generated-content shutdown. Preserve local saves, download purchased content while it remains available and identify which features require a server before uninstalling.
PlayStation’s Destruction AllStars notice similarly describes service removal while retaining Arcade Mode single-player challenges for returning players after the stated shutdown, with functionality possibly affected. Treat that as a limited offline fallback, not proof that every menu or reward system will continue to work.

Reissues and remasters also need scrutiny. A 2015 U.S. Copyright Office docket submission documented examples in which reissued games changed access controls or multiplayer functionality; it noted that a reissued Battlefield 1942 version later lost official multiplayer after GameSpy closed. This history shows why a newer package or remaster should not be assumed to preserve the original online experience. Compare its actual server, account and multiplayer documentation.

A practical matching worksheet
Use one row for the discontinued game and one for each candidate. Keep the answers specific enough to expose a mismatch.
| Question | What to record |
|---|---|
| What disappeared? | Matchmaking, co-op, UGC publishing, browsing, login, purchases or the entire service |
| What did you value? | Core loop, role, pace, camera, progression, social routine or creator community |
| Who played? | Solo, fixed friends, public matchmaking, local players or mixed-platform group |
| Which hardware? | PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, region and disc/download edition |
| What must transfer? | Friends, account progression, purchases, cosmetics, saves or nothing |
| What is acceptable to change? | Theme, perspective, map design, monetization, match length or role balance |
| What can end the search? | No required platform, no cross-play, missing mode, unavailable region or unsupported generation |
Then score each candidate on the features that matter most to you. A game that matches four essential requirements is a better choice than one that matches a famous franchise name but misses your group size or mode.
Common mistakes when replacing a shut-down game
Confusing genre with gameplay loop
“Shooter,” “sports” or “horror” describes a shelf, not the experience. Compare camera, round length, role asymmetry, team size and progression before deciding.
Assuming cross-platform means identical support
A cross-platform label may cover only current-generation editions, selected modes or matchmaking. Confirm PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Series X|S separately.

A reissue can change authentication, servers, maps or multiplayer access. Read the current edition’s documentation rather than relying on the original box or reviews.
Treating a planned migration as completed
The announced SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada offline transition illustrates the difference between a roadmap and a delivered feature. Save-data transfer and service-transition dates should be rechecked after the milestone passes.
Ignoring community and social fit
Even a mechanically similar game may have different voice-chat norms, skill levels, moderation, time zones and matchmaking health. Ask your regular group to verify the same mode and platform before spending money.
Assuming today’s live service is permanent
There is no longevity guarantee for an alternative. Keep local saves where supported, avoid treating server-only purchases as permanent ownership and periodically check official announcements for changes.

- If you miss shared voyages and open-ended co-op stories, investigate Sea of Thieves.
- If you miss precise, short competitive matches with a sports-like ruleset, investigate Rocket League.
- If you miss one-versus-many pursuit and survival rounds, investigate Dead by Daylight.
- If you miss battle-royale competition, compare Fortnite and Apex Legends against your preferred squad and combat style.
- If you miss a persistent shooter with a continuing activity mix, investigate Destiny 2.
- If the original’s offline campaign or single-player mode still works, keep using it while testing a candidate rather than deleting it immediately.
Make the final choice only after the exact console edition, current mode, cross-play behavior and service notice pass your checklist. That process preserves the part of the discontinued game you actually valued without promising that any living service will remain available forever.
