There is no single best coordinator for multiple AI coding agents. Use tmux or Zellij when persistent terminal sessions and SSH access matter most; add Git worktrees through Worktrunk, Claude Squad, or your own commands when agents must edit in parallel without conflicts. Choose Superset, Conductor, or Orca for a visual review-and-merge workspace, Pane for an agent-agnostic cross-platform and self-hostable setup, and Warp when cloud orchestration and notifications are worth adopting a hosted terminal workflow.
The right choice depends on where your bottleneck is: keeping sessions alive, isolating files, seeing which agent needs attention, reviewing diffs, or controlling work away from your computer.
What these alternatives actually replace
A desktop coordinator usually combines several separate jobs: it starts coding agents, gives each task an isolated checkout, shows status, collects diffs, and helps you merge the results. Terminal-first alternatives split those jobs into layers. A multiplexer such as tmux keeps processes running; Git worktrees prevent agents from sharing a working directory; a launcher or TUI creates sessions; and Git itself remains the source of truth for review and merging.
That separation is useful when you work over SSH, use operating systems that a particular desktop app does not support, or want to choose your own agent CLIs. It also means you must decide which layer owns each responsibility. A persistent terminal alone will not tell you that an agent is waiting for approval, and a worktree manager will not automatically resolve conflicting changes.

Choose by the bottleneck you need to remove
You mainly need sessions that survive disconnects
Start with tmux. A session remains running when an SSH connection drops, so an agent can continue while you reconnect. Zellij is the alternative if you want committed layouts, floating or stacked panes, session resurrection, and a browser client. Neither tool knows whether an agent is working, waiting for input, or ready for review; you supply that visibility with your own shell conventions and Git commands.
You need isolated checkouts but want to keep your terminal
Use Git worktrees directly or add Worktrunk. Worktrunk creates and switches worktrees, can launch an agent in the new directory, reports worktree and CI status, and provides merge, rebase, and cleanup commands. It fits an existing tmux, Zellij, or cmux setup instead of replacing it.
You want a terminal UI that handles sessions and worktrees
Claude Squad gives each session its own tmux session and Git worktree/branch. It can manage Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, Aider, and other local agents, then show a per-session diff and expose commit actions. It is a practical SSH-friendly middle ground, but pull-request handling remains your responsibility.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You need a visual queue, review surface, and merge flow
Superset, Conductor, and Orca put several tasks on a desktop workspace. Superset emphasizes lifecycle states such as Working and Needs review, a Changes pane for staging and commits, and a pull-request pane with checks and review threads. Conductor is a focused macOS workspace for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and OpenCode, with a branch and workspace for each task. Orca is the cross-platform open-source option, combining terminals, diffs, browser previews, and one worktree per task.
You need Windows or Linux as a first-class target
Pane and Orca are the clearest candidates in the available feature descriptions. Pane explicitly targets macOS, Windows, and Linux and accepts any CLI agent. Orca lists the same desktop platforms. Check current installers and maintenance activity before standardizing on either project because this category changes quickly.

You need phone control or work away from the laptop
Pane can run locally or through a self-hosted Remote Pane controlled from a desktop or phone. Superset documents an iPhone workflow. Orca lists a mobile companion. These are different remote models, so check whether your data stays on your network, requires a self-hosted relay, or is handled by a hosted service. Warp’s cloud orchestration is the option in this list explicitly designed to continue work away from the laptop.
Run multiple agents safely with Git worktrees
The most important protection against parallel-agent conflicts is giving every task a separate working directory and branch. A worktree shares Git objects with the main repository but has its own checked-out files, index, and branch. Agents can then modify different tasks simultaneously without overwriting each other’s uncommitted files.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →1. Prepare a clean base checkout
- Commit or stash changes in the main checkout. Do not create agent worktrees from a directory containing untracked edits you still need.
- Fetch the latest target branch and decide which commit each task should start from.
- Write a short task contract for each agent: files or behavior it owns, tests it must run, and the branch name it will use.
2. Create one worktree per task
From the repository root, create branches and sibling directories with Git:
git fetch origin
git worktree add ../project-agent-a -b agent-a origin/main
git worktree add ../project-agent-b -b agent-b origin/main
git worktree list
Use descriptive names that identify the task, not the model. If two agents need to edit the same subsystem, sequence the work or define an interface first; separate directories prevent file overwrites but cannot prevent logical merge conflicts.
3. Give each worktree its own session
With tmux, create a named session and split panes, then change each pane to a different worktree:

tmux new-session -s agents -c ../project-agent-a
tmux split-window -h -c ../project-agent-b
tmux attach -t agents
Start one agent in each pane. Zellij provides the same separation with a named session and a saved layout; the exact pane commands depend on your layout file. Worktrunk, Claude Squad, Pane, or Warp can automate the directory and session bookkeeping.
4. Make ownership and completion visible
Record the branch, task, test command, and current state in a small task list. Ask agents to stop when they need clarification rather than guessing across boundaries. A useful completion contract includes a clean or intentionally documented working tree, test output, a concise commit, and notes about migrations or manual checks.
5. Review and merge one branch at a time
- Inspect the diff and changed files before running broad integration tests.
- Run the agent’s stated tests in its own worktree.
- Rebase or merge the branch onto the current target branch if another task landed first.
- Resolve conflicts yourself or assign a dedicated integration task; do not let two agents silently rewrite the same conflict.
- After merging, remove the finished worktree with
git worktree remove ../project-agent-aand prune stale metadata withgit worktree prunewhen needed.
What each terminal and desktop option is good at
tmux and Zellij: the low-level foundation
These tools are best when you already understand Git and want minimal policy. tmux is free and dependable for persistent SSH sessions. Zellij adds committed layouts, floating or stacked panes, session resurrection, and a browser client. Both leave agent status, worktree creation, diff review, pull requests, and merge policy to you. That is a feature for people who want composability, but it creates more setup and more opportunities for inconsistent conventions across a team.
Claude Squad: terminal coordination with sensible defaults
Claude Squad reduces the manual steps by combining a terminal UI, tmux sessions, and a worktree/branch for every session. Its support for several popular local agents makes it useful when a project uses more than one model or coding CLI. The trade-off is scope: it provides diff previews and commit actions, but the cited comparison does not describe a complete pull-request review system or hosted execution.
Worktrunk: keep your existing stack
Worktrunk is the additive choice. If your team has settled on tmux, Zellij, or another terminal, it supplies the worktree lifecycle without forcing a new interface. Its CI status and merge, rebase, and cleanup commands address the repetitive parts of worktree management. You still need your own dashboard for “waiting for me” states and your own review process.

Superset: broadest local review workflow in the list
Superset creates a Git worktree, branch, terminals, and ports for each local branch-based workspace. Its status labels, Changes pane, pull-request checks, and review threads are aimed at the point where many terminal-only setups become hard to monitor. It also documents remote hosts and an iPhone app. The listed commercial terms are a free tier and Pro at $20 per user per month, or $15 per user per month when billed yearly; treat those figures as time-sensitive. macOS is the primary platform, with Linux described as experimental.
Conductor: polished but Mac-focused
Conductor is suited to a Mac user who wants one workspace and branch per task, with a focused review and merge flow. Its documented agent set includes Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and OpenCode. The decisive limitation is platform coverage: it is described as a macOS app, not a cross-platform coordinator.
Orca: open-source desktop coverage
Orca combines terminals, diffs, browser preview, and a worktree per task in a free MIT-licensed desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It supports Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, and other CLI agents and lists a mobile companion. Because project status and binaries can change, verify the current release and security posture before making it a team standard.
Pane: an agent-agnostic control plane
Pane describes itself as terminal-first rather than an IDE or terminal emulator. Its central model is one feature, one worktree, one branch, and one Pane. It can coordinate Claude, Codex, Cursor, or another CLI across repositories, panes, tabs, and review loops. An agent-operable CLI and MCP commands make it possible to have an agent create or inspect coordination state. Local execution and self-hosted Remote Pane provide a path to phone control without requiring a vendor-hosted runtime.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWarp: local tabs plus cloud fan-out
Warp documents three modes: local parallel sessions, isolated Git worktrees, and Automation Platform cloud orchestration. Its vertical tabs show branch, directory, and status metadata; notifications indicate when an agent needs attention; side-by-side diffs aid review; and saved TOML tab configurations make a repeatable layout possible. The guide updated October 12, 2026, also describes explicit validation and handoff contracts. Choose it when cloud execution or a polished terminal experience matters more than keeping every component self-hosted.

dmux: a small open-source launcher
dmux is a lightweight parallel-agent launcher built around tmux and Git worktrees and released under the MIT License. It is appropriate when you want a small control layer instead of a full desktop product. The short project description does not establish a detailed feature matrix, so assume that status reporting, review, and mobile capabilities are limited or require your own tools until verified.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Remote and mobile control: questions to settle first
- Does the process survive disconnects? tmux and Zellij keep local sessions alive; an SSH connection can be closed and reopened without killing the agents.
- Where does code execute? Terminal tools and most desktop workspaces described here run on your machine or a host you configure. Warp additionally documents hosted cloud orchestration. Pane’s Remote Pane is self-hosted rather than automatically vendor-hosted.
- What can the phone do? A companion may show status, send input, or provide a full review loop. Confirm the actual controls, authentication, and network exposure before assuming phone access equals a mobile IDE.
- How are secrets protected? Keep API keys in the host’s credential store or environment, restrict SSH and remote endpoints, and avoid copying production credentials into worktree files. Parallel agents increase the number of processes that can read those secrets.
Failure modes and practical fixes
Two agents edit the same files
Separate worktrees prevent uncommitted-file collisions, not semantic conflicts. Divide ownership, ask one agent to define an interface first, or merge one branch before starting the dependent task.
An agent starts from stale code
Record the base commit when creating each worktree. Before integration, fetch the target branch and rebase or merge explicitly. Do not assume that a long-running session has current dependencies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Sessions multiply until they are unmanageable
Use a naming convention such as repo-task-owner, keep a short task ledger, and close completed sessions. Worktrunk and Claude Squad help with lifecycle operations; tmux alone does not.
You cannot tell whether an agent is waiting
Terminal multiplexers provide panes, not attention signals. Use a coordinator with documented Working or Needs review states, notifications, or status metadata, or establish a convention in which agents write a state file and stop at approval gates.
Cleanup leaves branches or worktrees behind
Merge or archive the branch, remove the worktree, and run git worktree prune. Check git worktree list before deleting directories manually so Git’s metadata stays consistent.
A decision framework that avoids overbuying
- Start with your operating environment. If you need Windows and Linux, prioritize Pane or Orca. If you are on macOS and want a polished desktop board, consider Superset or Conductor.
- Choose the isolation boundary. For manual control, use Git worktree commands. For automation, use Worktrunk, Claude Squad, Pane, Warp, or a desktop workspace that creates worktrees for you.
- Choose the review depth. If branch, diff, and pull-request checks must be visible in one surface, favor Superset, Conductor, or Orca. If normal Git tooling is enough, stay with tmux or Zellij plus Worktrunk.
- Choose the execution location. Stay local for maximum control, use SSH and persistent sessions for a remote development host, or select Warp’s cloud mode when tasks must continue away from your machines.
- Validate the volatile details. Confirm supported agent versions, platform builds, mobile availability, licensing, prices, and project maintenance immediately before deployment. These details change faster than the underlying Git and terminal concepts.
What is—and is not—known about productivity
The available documentation describes features and workflows, not a controlled benchmark of developer productivity, agent quality, speed, or success rates. No defensible industry-wide statistic establishes that one coordinator makes developers faster. Evaluate a candidate with your own repository, test suite, security requirements, and review habits instead of treating a feature list as proof of better outcomes.
