If you want the closest available substitute for Deadlock’s mix of third-person combat and MOBA strategy, start with SMITE 2. If your priority is a traditional lane-based third-person MOBA with defined roles and map objectives, choose Predecessor. Hero shooters such as Overwatch and Paladins can fill the shooting-and-abilities side of the gap, but they are not direct MOBA replacements.
Deadlock remains an early-development multiplayer game. Its Steam listing describes access as limited to friend invites through playtesters, and it still has no announced release date. That makes the right alternative depend on which part of Deadlock you are trying to replace: the camera, gunplay, hero abilities, lane strategy, or coordinated objective play.
Why Deadlock is difficult to replace
Most multiplayer games reproduce only one or two parts of Deadlock’s identity. Deadlock’s comparison frame combines a third-person viewpoint, shooter-style combat, hero abilities, team-versus-team matches and competitive objectives with the strategic layer associated with a MOBA. Deadlock’s access situation also changes the decision. The current Steam listing identifies it as an early-development build, allows access through friend invitations from playtesters and gives no release date to plan around. Any game you can install and play now is therefore a temporary substitute rather than a purchase made with a confirmed Deadlock launch date in mind.

The match is not merely a shooter with abilities attached. The MOBA framing means your decisions extend beyond winning an individual duel. You must consider when to contest an objective, when to move with teammates and how an item or map decision changes the next engagement. Those are the strategic habits that ordinary arena shooters do not fully exercise.

What does not transfer
SMITE 2 is not a Deadlock clone. Its playable cast is built around mythological gods rather than Deadlock’s urban-fantasy cast, and its structure is an established action-MOBA format rather than Deadlock’s shooter-forward presentation. The rhythm of a match, the way characters express their abilities and the importance of specific map decisions will therefore feel different even when the broad genre blend is familiar.
That distinction matters if you are seeking the exact feel of Deadlock’s gunplay. SMITE 2 is the best fit for the hybrid category, but “closest” does not mean identical. Approach it as a game that preserves the relationship between action combat and MOBA strategy, not as a substitute that reproduces every weapon, hero or objective.
Access, controls and cross-play
The official SMITE 2 site advertises “Play Free Now.” It states support for keyboard and mouse, controller and Steam Deck, along with cross-play and cross-progression. Those options make it the most flexible recommendation for a group whose members use different input devices or platforms.

Cross-play determines whether you can form a party with friends on other supported systems; cross-progression concerns carrying eligible progression between supported platforms. They are separate features, so check the current account and platform requirements before assuming that every item or setting will transfer. Live-service features can change, and the official page is the appropriate place to confirm the current rules.

Who should choose SMITE 2
- Choose it if you want the closest explicit combination of third-person action and 5v5 MOBA strategy.
- Choose it if your group needs cross-play or cross-progression and uses a mixture of keyboard, mouse, controller or Steam Deck.
- Choose it if you enjoy improving through both mechanical execution and strategic planning.
- Look elsewhere if your main requirement is a conventional lane layout and role structure rather than an action-MOBA blend.
Predecessor: the strongest lane-based alternative
What it preserves
Predecessor is built around the fundamentals of a third-person MOBA. Omeda describes true third-person gameplay, heroes, lanes, roles, structures, monsters and objectives. The named roles include carry, jungle, midlane, offlane and support. If the part of Deadlock that interests you most is moving through a map with a coordinated team, managing lane pressure and choosing when to contest an objective, Predecessor offers the clearest route into that style.
The camera also matters. You are not looking down from a detached perspective; you are navigating the terrain directly from behind your hero. That changes how you judge line of sight, movement routes and the spacing between teammates. Players who want third-person movement and hero kits but do not need a heavy emphasis on gunplay will usually find its structure more immediately legible than a shooter-first game.
Where it differs from Deadlock
Predecessor is more conventionally organized as a lane MOBA and is less centered on shooting than Deadlock. Its roles and map structures give the match a clearer traditional framework, while Deadlock’s appeal comes from combining that kind of strategic layer with a shooter-forward presentation. You should expect the strategic questions to be familiar in broad terms but the moment-to-moment combat to feel different.
That difference is useful rather than a flaw. A conventional lane structure makes it easier to practice fundamentals such as holding a lane, rotating to an objective, recognizing a role’s responsibility and coordinating around structures. If you later gain access to Deadlock, those habits can help even though the games will not share identical mechanics.

Predecessor’s official site says it is available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, with full cross-play. Confirm the current platform version and account requirements before organizing a group, because live-service support can change. The broad platform coverage makes it a practical choice when friends are not all on the same system.

Who should choose Predecessor
- Choose it if lanes, defined roles and map objectives are your highest priorities.
- Choose it if you want to learn or practice traditional third-person MOBA fundamentals.
- Choose it if your group includes PC, PlayStation and Xbox players and needs full cross-play.
- Choose another option if reproducing shooter-like combat is more important than lane structure.
Overwatch and Paladins: shooter-first substitutes
Current comparison coverage also points to Overwatch and Paladins when the priority is hero-shooter play. They can provide the familiar loop of selecting a character with a distinct ability kit, taking fights as a coordinated team and improving aim, movement and ability timing. That makes them useful if the part of Deadlock you miss is the shooting and hero interaction.
They are not direct MOBA replacements. Deadlock’s unusual identity comes from combining third-person shooting with MOBA structure; a hero shooter emphasizes combat encounters rather than reproducing the same lane-and-objective framework. Before installing either game, verify its current platform support, available modes and access status because those details can change in live services.
When a shooter-first choice is sensible
- You primarily want to practice aiming, movement and ability timing.
- Your group prefers short combat-focused sessions over a lane-management match.
- You are comfortable giving up some of the item, lane and map decisions that define a MOBA.
When it will disappoint
A shooter-first game is a poor fit if your main reason for waiting on Deadlock is the strategic layer. You may enjoy the combat while still missing the decisions about lane pressure, item progression and objective timing. In that case, start with SMITE 2 or Predecessor and use a hero shooter only when you specifically want a change of emphasis.

Choosing by the feature you care about most
If you want the closest hybrid
Pick SMITE 2. It is the only recommendation in this group whose official positioning explicitly joins third-person action, shooter-like combat and 5v5 MOBA strategy. Expect a different cast and a different match structure, but the same broad relationship between mechanical execution and strategic planning.
If you want lanes and roles
Pick Predecessor. Its published feature list directly identifies lanes, carry, jungle, midlane, offlane and support roles, structures, monsters and objectives. Those are the signals of a traditional MOBA framework, expressed through a true third-person view.
If you want the shooting side only
Try Overwatch or Paladins, while treating them as hero-shooter alternatives. They are appropriate when weapon handling, hero abilities and team fights matter more to you than lane management.

If your group needs broad platform coverage
Both SMITE 2 and Predecessor advertise cross-platform play in the supplied official descriptions. SMITE 2 lists keyboard and mouse, controller, Steam Deck, cross-play and cross-progression. A substitute is most valuable when it develops habits that remain useful after you eventually receive access to Deadlock. Focus on skills shared by the documented comparison frame rather than trying to memorize one game’s exact controls.
1. Third-person positioning
Practice reading threats while moving through terrain, keeping enough space to react and using cover or elevation deliberately. Third-person combat rewards awareness of what is outside the center of your screen as much as precision with the reticle.
2. Ability sequencing
Learn to treat abilities as a sequence rather than isolated buttons. Notice which ability creates an opening, which one protects an ally and which one should be held for a more valuable moment. The timing will not transfer perfectly, but the discipline of planning a kit will.
3. Objective timing
Ask what your team gains after every fight. A successful engagement may create time to take an objective, pressure a structure or move into a better position. This keeps you focused on competitive objectives instead of chasing eliminations that do not change the map.
4. Role communication
In a team game, concise information is more useful than a running commentary. Call where pressure is building, when an opponent is absent and whether your team can contest safely. Predecessor’s named roles make this especially clear, while SMITE 2’s 5v5 structure reinforces the need to coordinate.

5. Reviewing decisions
After a match, identify one decision that created value and one that gave the opponent an avoidable opening. Reviewing movement, ability timing and objective choices builds judgment faster than simply changing characters after every loss.
A practical setup checklist
- Define your priority. Decide whether you are replacing the hybrid formula, the lane-MOBA structure or the shooter combat. This determines whether you begin with SMITE 2, Predecessor or a hero shooter.
- Confirm current access. Use the official game page to verify that the title is available in your region and that the advertised mode and platform still exist.
- Check your input and platform. For SMITE 2, confirm whether you will use keyboard and mouse, controller or Steam Deck. For Predecessor, confirm your PC, PlayStation or Xbox version and the current cross-play requirements.
- Coordinate your party. Cross-play does not remove every account or age requirement. Have each friend check the same current support information before scheduling a session.
- Set expectations before the first match. Tell new players whether the goal is mechanical practice, learning lanes and roles or simply playing a team shooter. A shared goal prevents the first session from feeling like a failed Deadlock test.
- Recheck live-service details periodically. Deadlock access, release timing, modes and platform support can change, as can the features of its alternatives. Revisit the official Steam, SMITE 2 and Predecessor pages before making a long-term plan.
Common mistakes when picking a Deadlock alternative
Expecting a clone
No recommendation here reproduces every Deadlock trait. SMITE 2 changes the setting and action-MOBA structure; Predecessor shifts toward a conventional lane MOBA; shooter alternatives reduce the MOBA emphasis. Judge each game against the feature you actually need, not against an impossible promise of identical feel.
Ignoring the camera
Perspective changes how aiming, movement and terrain work. A top-down or first-person substitute may teach useful skills, but it will not provide the same third-person spatial demands. If camera perspective is central to your interest, keep your shortlist to SMITE 2 and Predecessor.
Confusing team fights with MOBA strategy

Assuming every cross-play feature is identical
Cross-play, cross-progression and platform availability are separate claims. SMITE 2’s official description includes all three categories in different forms, while Predecessor’s description emphasizes PC, PlayStation, Xbox and full cross-play. Check the current terms for your account and platform rather than relying on a friend’s setup.
Treating access information as permanent
Deadlock is still invite-limited and has no announced release date in the referenced Steam listing, but that status can change. The same is true of live-service modes and platform support for alternatives. Use current official pages when you are ready to install or organize a group.
What to play first
Start with SMITE 2 if you want one game that most directly addresses the “third-person shooter plus MOBA” request. Start with Predecessor if your ideal Deadlock session is really a lane-based third-person MOBA with explicit roles and objectives.
