There is no single replacement for CLiF. Choose the system that matches your learning signal and adaptation method: Letta for persistent, agent-controlled memory; CopilotKit Automatic Learning for a reviewed production-to-skill loop; DSPy for metric-driven prompt or weight optimization; SWE-Bench-CL for measuring forgetting and transfer in coding agents; and model-level continual-learning methods such as FOSTER, MEMO, L2P, and DualPrompt when you need to adapt model representations or parameters.

CLiF occupies a particular position in that landscape. Announced by CopilotKit in early access on October 13, 2026, it captures full-stack product trajectories—agent runs, tool calls, state changes and responses together with screens, clicks and server requests carried over AG-UI. It can turn recurring patterns into proposed skills, production-based evaluations, exportable trajectories and fine-tuning datasets. The alternatives below address pieces of that workflow rather than reproducing every capability.

What CLiF does, and what an alternative must replace

CLiF treats real work in an application as the teaching signal. A trajectory includes what the agent did and what the person or product did around it. That combination matters when an agent’s success depends on UI state, a sequence of clicks, server-side requests, tool use and the final response—not just on a text prompt and answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its announced workflow has four practical outputs:

  • Proposed skills: recurring successful patterns can become instructions that a team reviews before publishing.
  • Production evaluations: observed work can supply cases for testing whether an agent performs reliably.
  • Exportable trajectories: teams can move the captured experience data to other systems.
  • Fine-tuning datasets: selected trajectories can be prepared for optional model training.

Official product material says CLiF can be self-hosted in a customer’s virtual private cloud or on-premises environment. That is relevant for teams that cannot send product telemetry to a third-party service. CLiF was announced in early access on October 13, 2026, so its feature set, integrations and pricing may change.

CopilotKit reports that teams using product trajectories can see a reduction in repetitive tasks of up to 80% within the first two weeks. This is a vendor claim, not an independently verified benchmark; treat it as a hypothesis to test in your own workflow rather than as a guaranteed result.

Alternatives at a glance

The candidates differ mainly in what they observe, how they adapt an agent, whether model weights change and whether they provide a production learning loop or only an evaluation or optimization component.

Candidate Primary learning signal Adaptation mechanism Do model weights change? Best use What it does not provide by itself
Letta Agent experience and persistent context Agent-controlled memory and context repositories Not the defining mechanism Carrying useful experience across sessions or model generations CLiF-style capture of complete user actions and product telemetry unless you add application instrumentation
CopilotKit Automatic Learning Completed agent runs Evidence-backed insights and versioned skills reviewed by people, then delivered through adapters No; documentation says learning changes runtime instructions, not the model itself A reviewed production-learning loop for supported agent frameworks Automatic model-weight training
DSPy Curated task examples and measurable task metrics Compilation or optimization of modular language-model programs, prompts and, where configured, weights It can optimize weights; the choice is part of the program design Systematic prompt or program optimization, including RAG and agent loops Automatic extraction of skills from end-user product workflows
SWE-Bench-CL Chronologically ordered coding tasks Benchmark scoring No; it evaluates an agent rather than adapting it Reproducible tests of retention, forgetting and transfer Production learning, memory or skill delivery
C3Box-documented methods (FOSTER, MEMO, L2P, DualPrompt) Sequential class-incremental-learning data Representation or parameter adaptation Yes, at the model-learning level Research and systems work below the agent-application layer Agent trajectory capture, workflow skills or framework adapters

Letta: choose persistent, agent-controlled memory

Letta is the closest fit when “continual learning” means an agent should retain and manage experience over time. Its research agenda treats trajectory as a standard format for agent experience data, describes context repositories for coding agents and develops memory models. It also includes a “Skill Learning: Bringing Continual Learning to CLI Agents” direction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Letta is the right choice

  • Your agent must remember facts, procedures or prior attempts across sessions.
  • The agent should decide what to retain, revise or retrieve rather than receiving a newly trained model after every interaction.
  • You need memory that can remain useful when the underlying model changes.
  • Your application can expose the events that matter through its own telemetry layer.

Where it differs from CLiF

Letta’s center of gravity is the agent’s memory and context. CLiF’s distinctive signal is full-stack product behavior: screens, clicks and server requests combined with agent events. A Letta deployment therefore does not automatically equal a record of every user action in your product. If the UI sequence or backend state transition is essential, instrument those events and associate them with the agent trajectory before treating the resulting data as a learning source.

A practical Letta rollout

  1. Define retention boundaries. Decide which facts, procedures and outcomes may persist, how long they remain valid and which data must never enter memory.
  2. Separate memory types. Keep durable user or project facts distinct from temporary scratch context and from task histories that are useful only for evaluation.
  3. Attach outcomes. Record whether a remembered procedure led to a successful result, a human correction or a rollback. Without an outcome, retrieval can reinforce a plausible but incorrect action.
  4. Test across model changes. Run the same tasks after changing the base model or system prompt. Verify that the memory format remains interpretable and that stale entries do not dominate newer evidence.
  5. Add product telemetry when needed. If success depends on clicks, screens or server state, connect those events to the memory system instead of relying on conversation text alone.

Choose Letta over a skill-publishing loop when the main problem is continuity of context. Choose CLiF or a similar production-learning system when the main problem is discovering repeatable workflows from what users do in the product.

CopilotKit Automatic Learning: the closest reviewed skill loop

CopilotKit’s documented Automatic Learning workflow is the most architecturally similar option in this list. It groups completed runs into learning containers, analyzes them into evidence-backed insights, proposes versioned skills for human review and delivers published skills through adapters.

Supported framework path

Documentation lists adapters for LangGraph, Mastra, Google ADK, Microsoft Agent Framework, AWS Strands and CopilotKit’s built-in agent. That makes this option attractive when your agent already uses one of those frameworks and you want to add a controlled learning cycle without designing a separate skill-delivery layer.

Important boundary: skills, not model training

A published skill changes the runtime instructions supplied to the agent. The documentation explicitly says that learning does not change the model itself. This can be an advantage: reviewers can inspect, version and roll back behavior changes without waiting for a model-training job. It also means that this path will not solve a requirement for new capabilities encoded in model weights.

Recommended operating procedure

  1. Collect completed runs. Define which runs are eligible and retain the context needed to understand both success and failure.
  2. Group comparable work. Do not mix unrelated tasks in one learning container; otherwise a useful pattern can be diluted by incompatible examples.
  3. Inspect evidence-backed insights. Require a concrete trace or outcome for every proposed behavior change.
  4. Review and version the skill. Record the scope, expected benefit, known exceptions and the reviewer who approved it.
  5. Publish through the relevant adapter. Start with a limited traffic segment or a non-critical workflow.
  6. Measure before and after. Track task success, correction rate, latency and regressions. Roll back the skill if its gains on one task create failures elsewhere.

This approach is preferable to an unmanaged prompt file that changes whenever someone notices a pattern. Versioning and review make it possible to attribute a behavior change to a specific learning event.

DSPy: optimize prompts, programs or weights from metrics

DSPy is a declarative framework for programming language-model systems and optimizing prompts and weights. It is designed for teams that can express a task as a modular LM program—such as a retrieval-augmented pipeline or agent loop—and can score outputs with task metrics.

When DSPy fits

  • You have a stable task definition and an evaluation metric, even if the task involves several model calls.
  • You want an optimizer to search for better instructions, demonstrations or program settings instead of hand-editing prompts.
  • You need to compare changes reproducibly across a curated dataset.
  • You are prepared to decide whether a gain should remain prompt-level or justify weight optimization.

Why it is not a direct CLiF replacement

DSPy starts with a program and task data. It does not, by itself, watch a customer’s screens, clicks and server requests and then extract a reviewed skill from recurring product behavior. You must supply examples, metrics and the optimization procedure. For that reason, DSPy is often complementary: a trajectory system can produce high-value examples, while DSPy can optimize the agent program against them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using DSPy with production experience

  1. Convert trajectories into tasks. Remove sensitive fields, define the input and expected outcome, and preserve the tool and state context needed to reproduce the decision.
  2. Choose a metric that reflects the real objective. Exact match may be suitable for structured output; a rubric or task-specific checker may be required for multi-step work.
  3. Keep a held-out set. Reserve examples that the optimizer cannot see so that apparent gains are not memorization.
  4. Optimize the smallest useful component. Start with a module or prompt rather than changing every stage of an agent loop simultaneously.
  5. Check transfer and regressions. Test neighboring tasks, tool-use errors and safety constraints before deploying the optimized program.

Use DSPy when optimization is the central question: “What prompt, program structure or weight setting scores best on this task?” Use a memory or skill system when the central question is: “What did this product’s users repeatedly do, and how should the agent adopt that procedure?”

SWE-Bench-CL: measure continual learning in coding agents

SWE-Bench-CL is an evaluation benchmark, not a learning platform. It orders SWE-Bench Verified issues chronologically and adds metrics for average accuracy, forgetting, forward transfer, backward transfer, tool-use efficiency and composite continual-learning scores.

What its metrics reveal

  • Average accuracy shows overall task performance across the sequence.
  • Forgetting reveals whether learning later tasks harms earlier capabilities.
  • Forward transfer asks whether earlier tasks help with later ones.
  • Backward transfer asks whether later learning improves performance on earlier task types.
  • Tool-use efficiency captures the cost or quality of the agent’s interactions with development tools.
  • Composite continual-learning scores combine these dimensions into a broader view than pass rate alone.

How to use it in a program

  1. Freeze the agent configuration, tool permissions and model version for the first run.
  2. Process issues in the benchmark’s chronological order rather than shuffling them.
  3. Record task results and tool traces after each step in the sequence.
  4. Calculate retention on earlier issues after later tasks have been introduced.
  5. Compare memory, skill, prompt-optimization and fine-tuning variants using the same sequence and reporting rules.

This benchmark is especially useful alongside Letta, DSPy or a skill loop. It can tell you whether an apparent improvement is genuine continual learning or simply a higher score on the latest task. It does not provide memory storage, production telemetry, skill publication or model training.

Model-level continual-learning methods: when the agent layer is not enough

C3Box documents class-incremental-learning methods including FOSTER, MEMO, L2P and DualPrompt. These methods address representation or parameter adaptation. They are materially different from a trajectory-to-skill workflow because the learning problem is defined at the model level, not as the discovery of procedures in a running application.

Choose this layer when

  • You are building or adapting the underlying model rather than only orchestrating an agent.
  • New classes or domains arrive sequentially and the model must learn them without losing earlier knowledge.
  • You can run controlled training and maintain datasets, checkpoints and compute.
  • You need to study parameter-level retention, transfer or representation quality.

Do not choose it merely to add agent memory

Changing model parameters is a heavier and less reversible intervention than adding a memory entry or publishing a reviewed instruction. It also does not automatically capture product events, tool traces or user intent. For an application team whose immediate problem is repeated workflow execution, start at the memory, skill or prompt layer and move to model-level continual learning only when those layers cannot meet the requirement.

Decision guide: match the tool to the learning problem

If your primary question is… Start with… Reason Add or pair with…
“How can the agent remember useful experience between sessions?” Letta Persistent, agent-controlled memory is the core design goal. Application telemetry and a benchmark if product actions or retention must be measured.
“How can production runs become reviewed behavior changes?” CopilotKit Automatic Learning It analyzes completed runs into versioned skills and delivers them through framework adapters. DSPy if prompt or program optimization is also required.
“What prompt or program scores best on my task metric?” DSPy Its declarative approach is built for metric-driven optimization. Trajectory capture for richer examples and SWE-Bench-CL for coding-agent retention.
“Did the coding agent forget old abilities while learning new ones?” SWE-Bench-CL It reports forgetting and transfer over a chronological task sequence. Any learning system under test; the benchmark does not change the agent.
“Must the model itself learn new classes or representations?” Model-level methods documented by C3Box These methods operate below the application-agent layer. An agent evaluation suite to verify that parameter changes improve real workflows.
“Do I need user clicks and backend state as teaching data?” CLiF or a separately instrumented trajectory pipeline The defining signal is the combination of product and agent events. Memory, DSPy or model training for the adaptation stage.

A composable architecture for production learning

Most teams do not need one product to perform every function. Separate the system into a signal layer, an adaptation layer and an evaluation layer so that each change is testable.

1. Capture the right signal

For a full-stack workflow, correlate agent runs, tool calls, state changes and responses with the relevant screens, clicks and server requests. For a memory-first design, capture the experiences the agent is allowed to retain. For DSPy, produce de-identified task examples with an explicit metric. For model-level training, maintain the sequential dataset and labels required by the chosen method.

2. Normalize outcomes

A trajectory without an outcome is only a record of behavior. Mark completion, human correction, rollback, escalation and other task-specific results. Keep failed attempts: they distinguish a robust procedure from a merely common one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Select the least invasive adaptation

  1. Try retrieval or memory when the agent needs information that already exists.
  2. Use a reviewed skill when the pattern is a repeatable instruction or procedure.
  3. Use prompt or program optimization when a measurable task metric can guide search.
  4. Use weight-level continual learning only when the preceding layers cannot provide the required generalization or capacity.

4. Gate every behavior change

Require human review for a new skill, an approval threshold for an optimized program and a checkpoint or rollback path for model updates. Limit initial deployment to a low-risk workflow and compare it with an unchanged control configuration.

5. Evaluate both gains and damage

Report task success, correction rate, latency, tool-use efficiency and the rate of unsafe or unauthorized actions. For sequential learning, include forgetting, forward transfer and backward transfer. A system that improves the newest workflow while degrading established ones is not ready for broad release.

Self-hosting, data residency and integration questions

CLiF’s official product description says it is fully self-hostable in a customer VPC or on-premises environment. That is a stated deployment property, not a guarantee that every future integration or feature will be available in every environment.

For the alternatives, the evidence establishes different integration stories rather than a common deployment promise. CopilotKit Automatic Learning documents adapters for LangGraph, Mastra, Google ADK, Microsoft Agent Framework, AWS Strands and its built-in agent. Letta, DSPy, SWE-Bench-CL and the C3Box methods should be assessed against your own hosting, telemetry and export requirements; the available descriptions do not establish a single shared self-hosting or residency policy for them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before selecting a system, answer these operational questions:

  • Can raw screens, clicks, prompts, tool arguments and server requests remain inside the required region?
  • Can you export trajectories, memories, skills and evaluation results in a format your team can inspect?
  • Can a reviewer see which evidence produced a behavior change?
  • Can you delete a user’s data from both active memory and derived datasets?
  • Can you pin versions and roll back a skill, optimized program or model checkpoint?
  • Does the framework adapter cover the exact runtime and tool protocol you use?

Availability, evidence and limits

CLiF’s October 13, 2026 announcement places it in early access. Capabilities, pricing and integration coverage may change as the product develops. The available material does not establish independent comparative benchmarks between CLiF and Letta, DSPy or the other alternatives, so claims that one universally outperforms another would be unsupported.

Similarly, the reported “up to 80%” reduction in repetitive tasks is a vendor-reported result with no independent benchmark attached. If that outcome matters to your business case, define “repetitive task,” measure a baseline and run a controlled pilot over the same two-week window before extrapolating.

The practical conclusion is therefore conditional rather than a single ranking: use CLiF when full-stack production trajectories are the main teaching signal and you want reviewed skills, evaluations, exports and optional fine-tuning in one loop. Use Letta for persistent experience, Automatic Learning for framework-based skill delivery, DSPy for metric-driven optimization, SWE-Bench-CL for reproducible coding-agent retention tests and model-level methods when the model itself must learn sequentially.
