MyFitnessPal Meal Scan, Cronometer Photo Logging, and Calori are the clearest alternatives to Cal AI when you want to start a food diary with a camera. They differ in how you review suggested foods, which correction and logging methods they offer, where they work, and what their current plans include. None turns a photograph into a laboratory measurement. Treat the result as a proposed entry, check the food and portion, and use a barcode, nutrition label, or kitchen scale when the quantity matters.
Which Cal AI alternatives are worth considering?
The best choice depends on your logging priority rather than a universal accuracy ranking:
- Choose MyFitnessPal Meal Scan if you want a guided camera workflow inside a large food diary and are willing to meet its device, app-version, language, and Premium requirements.
- Choose Cronometer Photo Logging if photo and voice entry should sit alongside a database approach that identifies named food-composition sources and works on web, iOS, and Android.
- Choose Calori if you want photo entry plus voice, text, barcode, label, search, corrections, and JSON or CSV export, with a free plan that includes an in-app allowance for AI features.
Those descriptions come from the products’ official information. They do not establish that one app produces more accurate calories than the others. A meal photo cannot reliably reveal hidden oil, exact recipe ingredients, cooking yield, or the weight of a serving. The most dependable workflow is to let the camera create a draft, then correct it.
What a photo-calorie estimate can—and cannot—tell you
A photo is a starting point
MyFitnessPal states this plainly in its Meal Scanner help article: “Meal Scan gives you a starting point, not a final answer, so you always have the last word on what goes in your diary.” The scanner suggests foods and serving sizes; you decide whether those suggestions describe what you actually ate.
#1 Best Overall
- 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁: Easily track your intake of up to 19 nutrients, monitor trends, create daily, weekly and monthly nutrition reports and more by connecting to the free Vesync app, Apple Health and Fitbit
- 𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲: Supported by Nutritionix, which holds about 1 million food data. You can add and customize your own food data as needed as well
- 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹: The food-grade 304 stainless steel weighing platform combines durability and easy-to-clean design
- 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: Choose units from oz/lb:oz/g (water & milk)/ml (water & milk), and the Tare button tells the exact weight of your food without container
- 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: Equipped with 4 high-precision sensors, the scale can weigh your foods between 3 g - 5000 g in 1 g increment
Calori makes the same distinction in different terms: photo logging is a day-to-day estimate rather than weighing. That is useful for reducing friction in routine logging, but it is not equivalent to measuring grams on a scale.
Why portions are the difficult part
A camera may recognize a bowl of pasta or a sandwich while missing the amount of pasta, the type of dressing, the cooking fat, or ingredients hidden beneath the top layer. Two plates that look alike can contain very different calories. Use the photo result as a prompt to inspect the components and serving sizes, not as an immutable number.
When another input is better
- Packaged foods: scan the barcode or nutrition label when available. Calori describes those methods as more precise than a photo for packaged products.
- Measured portions: weigh ingredients or servings when you need a specific quantity, such as for a structured nutrition plan.
- Mixed or restaurant meals: use the photo to create a draft, then search for each missed component and adjust the serving.

Check eligibility before subscribing
MyFitnessPal’s current support article says Meal Scan is Premium-only. It lists these requirements:
- iOS 18 or later, or Android 13 or later.
- MyFitnessPal app version 22.17 or newer.
- The app language set to English.
Requirements can change. Confirm the current help page and your local app listing before paying, especially if your phone uses another language or an older operating system. The support article is available at MyFitnessPal’s Meal Scanner instructions.
Use the scan as a reviewable draft
- Open the food-logging flow in the MyFitnessPal app and choose Meal Scan.
- Point the camera at the meal and wait for the suggested foods to appear.
- Select the suggestions that match what you ate. Do not assume every item was detected.
- Adjust the serving size or number of servings for each selected food.
- Use food search to add anything the scan missed.
- Review the completed entry, then save it to your diary.
The support documentation describes this selection, adjustment, missed-food, and logging sequence. It does not promise that the first suggestions are final or that every recipe component will be recognized.

What the official feature page supports
Cronometer’s Photo Logging page advertises both photo and voice logging and lists web, iOS, and Android access. It also names the Nutrition Coordinating Center Food & Nutrient Database, the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, the Canadian Nutrient File, and other national databases as food-composition sources.
That provenance can matter if you want to know what kind of reference data sits behind entries. It should not be read as proof that a photograph of your particular plate is more accurate than another app’s estimate. The page does not provide an independent comparative error rate or a complete set of current plan prices.
A practical Cronometer workflow
- Open Cronometer on the web, iOS, or Android and start a food entry using its photo-logging option.
- Inspect the foods proposed from the image and remove anything that does not belong to the meal.
- Correct serving amounts and add components that were not visible or were not suggested.
- Use voice or conventional search when describing the meal is faster than taking another image.
- Save only after the entry reflects the portion you actually consumed.
The exact controls can change between web and mobile versions, so use the labels shown in your current app. The important decision is the review step, not whether the original input was a photo or voice recording.
Calori: the broadest set of fallback logging methods
Supported entry types
Calori’s About Calori page describes logging by photo, voice, text, barcode, nutrition label, or search. It also describes manual corrections and export to JSON or CSV. That combination is useful when a photo is convenient for one meal but the package, label, or a typed ingredient list is better for another.

- Your Health Expert: The HealthyBites app can record and track daily intake, provide you with detailed nutritional analysis, and help you achieve your balanced eating goals. Very suitable for dietary planning, low carbohydrate diets, and daily preparation. It can also synchronize your data with Apple Health and Fitbit.
- Large Database: With the support of the "HealthyBites" application, it has approximately 1 million food data and can view 25 key nutritional indicators, including calories, fat, protein, sugar, and more. Simply scan the barcode of the product to obtain the nutritional ratio. You can also customize and add your own food data as needed.
- Accurate Measurement: The smart food scale is equipped with 4 high-precision sensors, which can weigh food between 3 grams and 5000 grams in increments of 1 gram. It also has 5 measurement units of g, ml, milk ml, lb:oz, fl:oz, and the peel button will display the accurate weight of the food (excluding the container) to obtain more accurate ingredients.
- Easy to Clean and Store: The food scale is made of stainless steel and plastic, durable and easy to clean. The compact and lightweight design makes the food calorie scale perfect for any kitchen environment, making it easy to store in drawers, cabinets, or travel bags.
- Clear Reading: The food weight scale is equipped with an LCD display screen, which can clearly display measurement values even in low light environments. It is both durable and convenient, making it an excellent addition to the kitchen.
Choose the input that matches the food
- Use a photo for a quick estimate of an ordinary meal.
- Use barcode or nutrition-label scanning for packaged food when the manufacturer’s serving information is available.
- Use text or search for a recipe whose ingredients you know.
- Use voice when listing several ingredients aloud is faster than typing.
- Use manual correction before saving and export JSON or CSV if you need to analyze or retain your diary outside the app.
Calori’s own distinction between photo estimation and weighing is the key limitation: convenience does not remove the need to check portions.
How to choose without an accuracy ranking
Pick by correction workflow
If you regularly eat mixed meals, prioritize the app that makes it easiest to inspect suggestions, change servings, and add missed foods. MyFitnessPal documents all three actions for Meal Scan. Calori documents corrections and several alternate input methods. Cronometer’s published material emphasizes photo and voice logging plus its food-data sources; verify the correction controls in the version you use.
Pick by device and language
MyFitnessPal’s documented Meal Scan eligibility is unusually specific: iOS 18 or Android 13, app version 22.17 or newer, and English. If you cannot meet one of those conditions, its camera feature may not be available to you even if the rest of the app runs. Cronometer lists web, iOS, and Android. For Calori, confirm the current platform listing and regional availability.
Pick by data and portability needs
Cronometer names several national food-composition databases. Calori describes JSON and CSV export. Those are different advantages: one concerns the stated origin of food data, the other concerns what you can do with your records later. Neither substitutes for checking the serving amount in the individual entry.
Pick by payment model
Meal Scan requires MyFitnessPal Premium. MyFitnessPal’s listed US prices are date- and region-sensitive. Calori’s free plan includes an unspecified in-app AI allowance and local pricing. Cronometer’s cited feature page does not state current plan terms. Compare the offer displayed at signup, including whether a trial becomes a recurring subscription.
A higher-accuracy workflow for any photo app
You can make a photo-based diary substantially more useful without pretending it is a scale.

- Photograph before eating. Include the whole plate and keep individual components visible where practical.
- Check every suggestion. Remove foods that are wrong and add ingredients the app did not identify.
- Correct portions. Change serving size or servings to match what was on your plate and what you actually finished.
- Use labels for packaged items. A barcode or nutrition label carries product-specific information that a photo cannot infer reliably.
- Weigh when precision matters. A digital kitchen scale is optional, but it is the most direct way to replace a visual guess with a measured portion.
- Save only after review. Treat the saved diary entry as your considered estimate, not the camera’s first answer.
For routine awareness, this process can be faster than entering every ingredient from scratch. For medical nutrition therapy, an eating disorder recovery plan, or another situation where exact intake is clinically important, ask a qualified healthcare professional which measurement and logging method is appropriate.

Common problems and fixes
The camera option is missing in MyFitnessPal
- Confirm that your account has Premium access.
- Check that the phone is running iOS 18 or later or Android 13 or later.
- Update to app version 22.17 or newer.
- Set the app language to English, as required by the current help article.
- Recheck the support page and local app listing because eligibility can change.
The app identifies the meal but the calories look wrong
- Inspect the serving unit and number of servings.
- Look for hidden ingredients such as oils, sauces, spreads, or toppings.
- Add missed foods with search or another logging mode.
- Replace the photo estimate with barcode or label information for packaged food.
- Use a weighed portion when the difference would affect your decision.
You want to avoid a subscription
Do not assume that a camera feature is included in a free tier. MyFitnessPal identifies Meal Scan as Premium-only. Calori describes a free plan but with an in-app allowance for AI features. Cronometer’s cited feature page does not state the current plan terms. Check the purchase screen in your country before relying on a feature.
You need your data outside the app
Calori’s official description includes JSON and CSV export. For the other options, verify export capabilities in the current account settings before building a workflow that depends on a downloadable archive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is—and is not—known about photo-calorie accuracy
No reliable independent head-to-head accuracy measurement for these current alternatives is established here. Precise percentages found on comparison pages should not be treated as universal findings. Recognition quality can vary with cuisine, lighting, camera angle, recipe complexity, serving size, and the corrections a user makes.
The defensible conclusion is narrower: photo logging can reduce the effort needed to start an entry, while labels, barcodes, searches, and measured weights can provide more specific information when those inputs exist. Compare the apps on workflow, correction controls, platform, language, data-source description, export, and plan terms—not on an unsupported claim that one has the lowest error.

Which app counts calories from food photos?
MyFitnessPal documents Meal Scan, Cronometer advertises Photo Logging, and Calori describes photo logging. Each uses the image to propose an entry that should be reviewed; none is established here as universally more accurate.
Can a food photo measure calories accurately?
It can produce a useful estimate, but a photo does not directly measure weight or reveal every ingredient. Review the proposed foods and portions, and use a label, barcode, search, or scale when you need more specific information.
Does MyFitnessPal Meal Scan work on every phone?
No. The current support article lists iOS 18 or later, Android 13 or later, app version 22.17 or newer, English language settings, and Premium access. Verify the latest requirements before subscribing.
Does Cronometer’s database list prove better photo accuracy?
No. The named food-composition databases explain the sources Cronometer identifies for its data. They are not an independent comparison showing that its photo estimates outperform another app’s.
What should I use for packaged food?
Use the barcode or nutrition-label entry when possible. Calori specifically describes those methods as more precise than photo logging for packaged foods because they use product-specific information.
Can I export a food diary?
Calori describes JSON and CSV export. Confirm whether the other app and your current plan provide the export format you need before depending on it.
