The Wandering Village is the closest alternative to Beyond These Stars. Both ask you to build a settlement on a living, enormous creature and balance expansion with the needs of the host carrying your people. Choose Airborne Kingdom or Airborne Empire if you want a city that moves through the sky but do not need a biological companion. Choose Before We Leave if the appeal is a calm, approachable science-fiction city builder from the same developer rather than the space-whale premise.

This guide separates true creature-host games from looser moving-city and creature-economy ideas, so you can pick the closest mechanical match instead of a game that only shares an unusual setting.

Quick comparison

Game What moves Relationship to the host Best for How close it is
The Wandering Village A settlement rides on a giant living creature called Onbu Explicit symbiosis; you can cooperate with or exploit Onbu Players who specifically want to build on an animal Closest match
Airborne Kingdom The city itself flies Infrastructure and mobility management rather than a biological bond Players who want a mobile city and aerial exploration Strong moving-city alternative
Airborne Empire The city itself flies Mobility and systems management, with light role-playing elements Players who want a larger world and more RPG flavor than the earlier game Strong moving-city alternative
Before We Leave Settlements develop in a science-fiction setting No creature-host premise is identified Players seeking a gentle, approachable city builder from the same studio Adjacent rather than direct
Upcoming moving-platform or creature-economy projects covered in 2026 city-builder reporting Varies; examples include a moving train or creature-centered settlement economy Depends on the individual project Players willing to track unreleased or changing games Looser match

The key distinction is not simply whether a game has a strange setting. It is whether your city depends on a living host, a machine that provides mobility, or neither.

What Beyond These Stars sets as the target

Beyond These Stars launched on October 16, 2026, according to the publisher’s launch press release. The game is available on PC through Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store. The publisher reported 250,000 wishlists before launch, a figure that describes interest before release rather than sales or an ongoing player count.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Its Steam description presents the premise as “A Home Among the Stars”: your Peeps build a sprawling city on the back of Kewa, a universe-traveling space whale. The listed systems combine ordinary city-builder work—production lines, supply chains, housing and jobs—with exploration of planets, meetings with alien societies and communication with a sentient host. The whale is therefore not just a map or vehicle. It is part of the settlement’s social and logistical problem.

That combination creates four tests for an alternative:

  • Creature-host construction: the settlement is physically placed on a living being.
  • Host relationship: the player must communicate with or otherwise respond to the creature carrying the city.
  • Mobile-world logistics: the city travels, so expansion and production are tied to movement and changing environments.
  • Exploration beyond the settlement: the setting includes travel and encounters rather than a fixed map alone.

No other option in the available evidence matches all four. The Wandering Village matches the first three most closely, but its world is a toxic-spore post-apocalypse rather than interstellar space. The Airborne games match mobility and exploration while replacing the animal with an engineered flying city. Before We Leave keeps the calm science-fiction settlement tone but drops the moving-host requirement.

The Wandering Village: the closest creature-based alternative

Why it is the best match

The official site describes a human village built on the back of a gigantic host named Onbu and says the player must form a symbiotic relationship with it. Its Steam listing calls it “a city-building simulation game on the back of a giant, wandering creature.” That is the same core fantasy that makes Beyond These Stars distinctive: your population does not merely live near a creature; it builds on the creature while depending on its continued movement and survival.

Instead of Kewa carrying a spacefaring settlement, Onbu carries a village through a post-apocalyptic landscape affected by toxic spores. The change in setting matters. You are not looking for alien planets or interstellar encounters; you are managing a vulnerable settlement on a biological host while navigating hazardous environments.

How its systems line up

  • Limited building area: the village expands across Onbu’s back, so placement and production-chain planning must account for finite space.
  • Food and materials: farming and foraging support the settlement as it travels.
  • Environmental pressure: toxic-spore biomes create survival problems that shape travel and preparation.
  • Host decisions: you decide whether to cooperate with Onbu or exploit the host, making the relationship an explicit strategic choice rather than background fiction.

Those systems make The Wandering Village the strongest recommendation when the search phrase is “city builder on a giant creature” or “games where you build on a moving animal.” It is also the clearest choice for someone who wants the creature to be a participant in the settlement’s survival rather than a decorative backdrop.

Important differences from the space-whale formula

The two games should not be treated as interchangeable settings. Beyond These Stars frames its movement around a universe-traveling space whale, alien meetings and planetary exploration. The Wandering Village frames movement around a wandering host, toxic-spore biomes and a post-apocalyptic journey. If alien diplomacy and space travel are your non-negotiable features, this is an adjacent game, not a replacement for those themes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The relationship model is also presented differently. Both games involve a sentient or significant host, but the available description of The Wandering Village explicitly emphasizes the moral and strategic choice between cooperation and exploitation. That gives the host relationship a sharper survival-management role.

Release status, editions and add-ons

The Steam listing gives The Wandering Village a July 17, 2025 release date. On October 18, 2026, the listing showed 92% positive English-language reviews from 4,031 reviews. That percentage and review total are snapshots and can change as new reviews are posted, so they should not be read as a permanent rating.

The official site also advertises a physical edition through Serenity Forge. Steam lists a soundtrack, an artbook/wallpapers/goodies pack and The Last Leviathan downloadable content. Availability of physical products and add-ons can vary by region and date; check the current store listing before purchasing.

Choose it when

  • Your must-have feature is building directly on a living creature.
  • You want the host’s health, behavior or cooperation to matter to city planning.
  • You prefer survival pressure and hazardous travel to a space-opera setting.
  • You want a released game rather than an upcoming concept whose schedule may change.

Airborne Kingdom and Airborne Empire: moving cities without a creature host

Airborne Kingdom

Airborne Kingdom takes the mobile-city idea into the sky. The city itself flies, so the central comparison is movement, infrastructure and exploration rather than a symbiotic relationship with an animal. This makes it a good choice when the phrase “moving city builder” matters more to you than “creature city builder.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The design question changes from “How do I keep the host healthy and willing to carry us?” to “How do I design and operate a city that can remain airborne and travel?” That is a meaningful mechanical difference. The two games share a mobile settlement and unusual world structure, but they ask you to manage different dependencies.

Airborne Empire

Airborne Empire builds on the foundation of Airborne Kingdom with a larger world and light role-playing elements. Recommend it when you want the flying-city premise with a broader setting and some RPG flavor, and choose the earlier game when you want the more direct starting point for the airborne-city concept.

Neither Airborne Kingdom nor Airborne Empire is a substitute for conversations with a sentient whale or decisions about exploiting a biological host. Their value is in preserving the fantasy of designing, supplying and moving a city through a larger world while changing the vehicle from an organism to a flying machine.

Choose the Airborne games when

  • You want mobility to be the main city-building problem.
  • You enjoy infrastructure and exploration more than creature care or symbiosis.
  • You prefer a flying-machine setting to a post-apocalyptic animal journey.
  • You want to compare a more focused foundation (Airborne Kingdom) with a larger world and light RPG elements (Airborne Empire).

Before We Leave: the same developer’s gentle science-fiction option

Balancing Monkey Games identifies Before We Leave as its earlier city-building game. It is the natural recommendation for readers attracted to the studio’s calm, approachable science-fiction settlement design but who do not specifically require a whale, a moving animal or a host relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connection is about tone and developer lineage, not an identical mechanic. The available description does not establish a creature-host system for Before We Leave, so it should not be presented as a game where you build on a living carrier. Its role in this list is to offer a gentler science-fiction city-builder experience from the same studio behind Beyond These Stars.

Choose it if your priority order is:

  1. Approachable settlement management.
  2. A science-fiction backdrop.
  3. The same developer’s design sensibility.
  4. No strict requirement for a mobile biological host.

If the phrase “space whale city builder” is the reason you are searching, start with The Wandering Village instead. If the phrase “cozy sci-fi city builder” is more important, Before We Leave is the closer fit.

Looser matches: moving platforms and creature economies

PC Gamer’s 2026 city-builder coverage describes adjacent concepts that include a settlement on a moving train and a creature-collecting economy built around a settlement. These ideas may appeal to players who want an unusual foundation for a city or creature-centered progression, but the available coverage does not establish them as direct substitutes for Beyond These Stars.

Treat release dates, platforms and availability for these projects as volatile. A game described in coverage may still be in development, may change scope or may not be available in your region. They belong on a watchlist rather than in the same recommendation tier as a released title with a confirmed store listing.

Compare the alternatives by the decision that matters to you

Do you need a living host?

If your priority is… Start with… Reason
Building on a living creature The Wandering Village Its defining premise is a village on Onbu’s back, with an explicit symbiotic relationship.
Building on a sentient space creature Beyond These Stars Its stated premise centers on Kewa, a universe-traveling space whale and communication with the host.
Moving a city without biology Airborne Kingdom or Airborne Empire The city flies, making infrastructure and mobility the focus.
Science-fiction settlement design without a host requirement Before We Leave It is the earlier city-building game from the same developer.

Do you want survival pressure or a gentler tone?

The Wandering Village is the more survival-oriented recommendation in this set because its systems include toxic-spore biomes, farming, foraging and decisions about cooperation or exploitation. The Airborne comparison is about mobility and infrastructure. Before We Leave is the option to investigate when an approachable, calm science-fiction settlement is more important than harsh travel conditions. These are orientation points, not a claim that every difficulty or accessibility setting is identical across the games.

Do you want a released game or an idea to follow?

Beyond These Stars launched on October 16, 2026, and The Wandering Village has a July 17, 2025 release listing. The named Airborne games and Before We Leave are established recommendations in the supplied descriptions. The train- and creature-economy concepts mentioned in 2026 coverage require a current platform and release check before you treat them as purchase options.

A practical selection path

  1. Write down your non-negotiable. If it is “the city must sit on a living creature,” select The Wandering Village. If it is “the city must fly,” compare Airborne Kingdom and Airborne Empire.
  2. Choose the world you want to inhabit. Pick the toxic-spore post-apocalypse for The Wandering Village, aerial exploration for the Airborne titles, or a calmer science-fiction settlement for Before We Leave.
  3. Decide how much the host should matter. The creature relationship is explicit in The Wandering Village. The Airborne games replace that relationship with vehicle and infrastructure management.
  4. Check the current store page. Prices, regional availability, bundles, physical stock and downloadable content can change. The review percentage and count for The Wandering Village are also time-sensitive.
  5. Only then consider unreleased concepts. Use moving-train or creature-economy projects as watchlist options until their release status and mechanics are confirmed.

Bottom line for each type of player

  • Closest overall: The Wandering Village, because it combines city building, a moving living host and an explicit symbiotic relationship.
  • Best mobile-city substitute: Airborne Kingdom or Airborne Empire, for a flying city built around mobility and exploration instead of biology.
  • Best same-developer alternative: Before We Leave, for approachable science-fiction settlement building without the whale premise.
  • Best watchlist category: moving-platform and creature-economy projects, provided you verify their current release status before relying on them as alternatives.
