The best belt-drive alternative depends on what happens when the route gets remote, steep or dirty. Choose a chain with an external derailleur for the widest roadside parts availability and the easiest repairs. Choose a chain-driven internally geared hub, such as the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 with E-14, when enclosed gearing and coordinated electronic shifting matter more than universal service access. Choose a Pinion MGU gearbox system when centralized gearing, automatic shifting and controlled low-speed motor power are the priorities—but check the bicycle carefully, because many MGU models still use a belt and therefore do not eliminate belt-drive maintenance.
No architecture is proven universally more efficient or more durable in long-distance off-road use. The right decision comes from the complete bicycle: its lowest climbing gear, wheel and tire specification, luggage mounts, battery, brakes, local support and the exact motor-and-drivetrain pairing.
Quick comparison
| Architecture | Best fit | Repair access | Protection from dirt and impacts | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chain with external derailleur | Loaded touring, mixed routes and riders who want familiar bicycle parts | Broadest access to ordinary bike-shop components; chains, cassettes and derailleur parts are replaceable wear items | Lowest; the chain, cassette and derailleur are exposed | More cleaning and adjustment, and greater vulnerability to rocks, mud and crashes |
| Internally geared hub, usually chain-driven | Touring riders who value enclosed gearing and coordinated shifts | Routine external chain service is familiar, but hub work and electronic parts may need specialist support | Higher than a derailleur because the gears are enclosed | Premium cost, heavier wheel hardware and less universal field service |
| Integrated motor-and-gearbox system | Riders seeking centralized gearing, automatic shifting and controlled power on technical climbs | Usually specialist; the motor and gearbox are a combined system | High for the gearing itself, although the bicycle may still have an exposed belt or chain | Model-specific service, higher system complexity and, on many bikes, no elimination of the belt |
These are drivetrain architectures, not guarantees about a particular model. A well-equipped derailleur bike can be a better expedition tool than a poorly equipped gearbox bike, and the reverse can also be true.
What an “alternative to belt drive” actually means
A belt replaces the chain that normally transmits pedal and motor torque to the rear wheel. Removing it does not automatically produce a better touring bicycle; it changes where maintenance, weight and failure points sit.

The three practical alternatives are a conventional chain and derailleur, a chain driving an internally geared rear hub, and a gearbox integrated into the e-bike’s central motor unit. The first two use a chain, so they genuinely remove the belt. The third may or may not: Pinion’s MGU combines a motor and gearbox, but many complete MGU bicycles still transfer power to the rear wheel with a belt.
Industry coverage has included touring, cargo and mountain-bike e-bikes, alongside internal-gear and gearbox technologies from manufacturers such as Shimano, Rohloff, enviolo and Pinion. That breadth confirms that a non-belt drivetrain is a normal design choice rather than a niche workaround.
Chain and external derailleur: the practical default
How the system works
A chain runs through a rear cassette and a sprung derailleur. The derailleur moves the chain between sprockets, while the front chainring is driven by the crank and mid-motor. Gear changes are external, visible and accessible without opening a hub or gearbox.

Why it suits long trips
- Parts are familiar. Most bicycle shops understand chains, cassettes, jockey wheels, cables and derailleurs. A rider can carry a quick link, a short chain tool and a spare derailleur hanger rather than relying on a proprietary gearbox workshop.
- Wear is easy to inspect. Chain stretch, hooked cassette teeth and damaged jockey wheels can be seen or measured. Replacing one worn component is normally simpler than diagnosing an enclosed transmission.
- Gearing can be selected for the load. A touring build can use a large low sprocket for steep grades. Confirm the actual cassette and motor limits instead of assuming that the derailleur name tells you the lowest usable gear.
- Wheel removal is straightforward. A conventional rear wheel and cassette are familiar to mechanics and easier to source in different regions.

Before buying, identify the exact Bosch drive-unit generation, the eShift partner system, firmware requirements and the controls supplied on the bicycle. A derailleur that can be fitted mechanically is not necessarily a derailleur that can be integrated electronically with a particular Bosch system.
Where it is weaker
The chain, cassette and derailleur sit in the spray and impact zone. Mud can obstruct shifting, a stick can bend the derailleur, and a crash can damage the hanger. The exposed system also needs regular cleaning and lubrication, particularly after wet or sandy sections. These are manageable faults, but they are the faults most likely to be repairable with ordinary tools rather than avoided altogether.
Field-repair procedure
- Shift to a usable gear before the problem worsens. If shifting becomes noisy, stop before the chain jumps across the cassette and damages the spokes or derailleur.
- Inspect the derailleur and hanger. A bent hanger can make every gear unreliable. Carrying a model-specific spare hanger is useful on remote trips.
- For a broken chain, remove the damaged links. Use a chain tool and a compatible quick link, then run the shortened chain in one middle gear. Avoid high-torque shifts until a full replacement is available.
- For a damaged derailleur, make the bike single-speed temporarily. Secure or remove the derailleur, choose a straight chain line and use only a gear that keeps the chain tensioned. This is an emergency ride-out method, not a permanent setup.
- Clean before lubricating. Abrasive grit left on a wet chain accelerates wear. Carry a small bottle of the lubricant appropriate to the expected weather.
Internally geared hubs: enclosed gears with a chain outside
Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 with E-14
The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 is a 14-speed internally geared hub. Its E-14 electronic shifter is designed to coordinate with Bosch and Panasonic FIT e-bike transmissions. Rohloff says the coordinated system is intended to improve shifting comfort and safety, extend battery range and reduce wear on bicycle transmission components.
Because the gears are inside the hub, the rear sprocket and chain remain external but the multi-speed mechanism is protected from mud and impacts. This is attractive for touring routes where a derailleur could be struck by luggage, vegetation or a rock.

Advantages for touring
- Shifts can be coordinated with motor assistance. Electronic integration can manage the transition between gears and motor load more smoothly than an uncoordinated manual shift.
- The gear mechanism is protected. Dirt and impact exposure are lower than with a cassette and derailleur, although the chain still needs cleaning and replacement.
- One hub provides a broad, evenly spaced range. The 14-speed layout avoids dependence on a multi-piece cassette, but the usable climbing gear still depends on the complete bicycle’s chainring, sprocket and motor setup.
- Rear-wheel robustness can be a design benefit. There is no long derailleur cage hanging below the axle, though the hub itself adds mass to the wheel.
Limitations and service planning
An internally geared hub moves complexity out of sight. A damaged chain is still a normal field repair, but internal faults, electronic shifter failures and hub-specific adjustments can require trained service or proprietary parts. The system may also make the rear wheel heavier, which can affect how the bicycle behaves over repeated rocks and steps.
For a long expedition, identify an authorized service point along the route, learn how the wheel and shifter connectors are removed, and carry the small consumables specified for that system. Do not assume that any bike shop able to replace a chain can rebuild or diagnose the hub.
Pinion MGU: a motor and gearbox in one unit
What the MGU changes
Pinion describes the MGU as a wear-free, brushless full-power electric motor and its gearbox united in one compact package, with up to 12 speeds. The motor and gearing are centralized around the crank area rather than split between a mid-motor and a rear derailleur or hub.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCentralization can make handling feel more balanced than a heavy rear hub, but the effect depends on the frame, battery position, wheel size and luggage. Compare complete bicycles at their actual touring weight; a component specification alone cannot predict handling.

Low-speed control on loose climbs
Pinion documents a starting aid intended to help prevent wheel spin when setting off on loose climbs. That feature addresses a real off-road problem: a heavily loaded e-bike can overwhelm rear-tire grip when the rider applies power from a standstill. It does not replace suitable tires, correct pressure, a low gear or smooth rider input.
The belt caveat
An MGU is not automatically a belt-drive alternative. Many MGU bicycles still use a belt between the gearbox output and rear wheel. If your reason for leaving belt drive is to avoid a belt-specific spare, tension procedure or frame opening, verify the final-drive type in the exact model. An MGU paired with a chain is a chain alternative; an MGU paired with a belt is a gearbox alternative but not a belt elimination.
Trade-offs
- Integrated service. Motor and gearbox faults are not normally roadside repairs. Plan around dealer coverage and transport options.
- Less universal parts access. A standard chain or tire may be easy to source, while MGU-specific electronics and controls are not.
- Automatic-shifting potential. The integrated system can support automatic or coordinated shifting, useful when the rider is managing balance and traction on technical terrain.
- Complete-bike dependence. Frame protection, belt or chain routing, battery access and wheel specification differ substantially between MGU models.

How the three architectures compare on the issues that matter off road
Repair access
A derailleur chain wins when “repairable anywhere” is the first requirement. An internally geared hub keeps ordinary chain repairs simple but adds a specialized rear transmission. An MGU concentrates even more functions into a proprietary assembly. Riders crossing regions with uncertain dealer coverage should value standard wear parts and carry spares accordingly.
Low climbing gears
Loaded touring and steep dirt roads need a genuinely low gear, not merely a high number of gears. Check the smallest gear ratio produced by the complete chainring, sprocket, hub or gearbox and the motor’s permitted cadence. Test it with luggage before departure; a gear that feels adequate on an unloaded test ride may be too tall on a long climb.
Traction and low-speed control
Loose climbs reward a low gear, smooth torque delivery and a tire that can hold the surface. Pinion’s documented starting aid specifically targets wheel spin when setting off on loose climbs. Derailleur and hub systems can also climb well, but their results depend on motor control, gearing, rider technique and tire setup rather than architecture alone.
Dirt and impact exposure
External derailleurs have the greatest exposure. Hubs and gearboxes protect their internal gears, but no system is immune to a bent wheel, damaged chain, contaminated bearings or a failed electronic connector. Frame guards and sensible luggage placement matter regardless of drivetrain.
Wear and consumables
Chains, sprockets, cassettes and derailleur components are routine consumables on a derailleur bike and on most chain-driven hubs. Enclosed systems reduce exposure of the multi-speed mechanism but shift maintenance toward hub or gearbox service. A claim that an enclosed system eliminates wear is too broad; it changes which parts wear and who can replace them.
Weight and handling
A rear hub concentrates mass in the wheel, while an MGU centralizes motor and gearbox mass. A derailleur system is usually lighter at the rear but may use a larger cassette and more exposed hardware. Evaluate the complete bike with racks, battery and travel load, then check wheel removal and lifting height.
Best choice by rider priority
| Your priority | Most sensible starting point | Why | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repair it in ordinary bike shops | Chain and external derailleur | Familiar parts and straightforward emergency conversions | Spare hanger availability, cassette range and motor compatibility |
| Keep multi-speed gearing enclosed | Internally geared hub, such as SPEEDHUB 500/14 with E-14 | Protected gears and coordinated shifting options | Hub service locations, wheel weight and electronic support |
| Centralize weight and automate shifting | Pinion MGU-equipped bicycle | Motor and up-to-12-speed gearbox in one unit; starting aid for loose climbs | Whether the final drive is a belt or chain and how MGU service is handled |
| Carry heavy luggage over remote terrain | Whichever complete bike offers the lowest usable gear and strongest wheels | Load capacity and climbing control matter more than the drivetrain label | Rack mounts, axle standards, tire clearance, brakes and battery range |
Long-distance preparation checklist
Before buying
- Write down the exact motor, battery, display, controller and drivetrain model numbers.
- Confirm the lowest gear with your intended load, not just the advertised gear count.
- Check whether the final drive is a chain or belt if belt avoidance is non-negotiable.
- Ask where electronic-shift and gearbox repairs are performed on your planned route.
- Verify rack mounts, maximum system weight, wheel strength, tire clearance and brake-rotor size.
Before departure
- Install a fresh chain or inspect hub and gearbox service intervals according to the manufacturer’s schedule.
- Carry a chain tool, compatible quick links, spare tube or tubeless repair supplies, derailleur hanger if applicable, and the correct electronic charging cables.
- Save firmware and component details offline. A shop cannot identify a replacement from a vague description such as “Bosch 12-speed.”
- Test shifting under motor load and with the bicycle fully packed.
- Practice removing the rear wheel and reconnecting any electronic hub or motor plugs.
On the route
- Reduce motor assistance and select a low gear before a loose climb rather than shifting under maximum torque.
- Stop early when shifting becomes noisy; continuing can turn an adjustment into a broken chain, cassette or derailleur.
- After mud or sand, rinse or brush the external chain and inspect for a bent hanger or trapped debris.
- Protect electronic connectors from water ingress and do not pull on wiring when removing a wheel.
- If an integrated motor or gearbox stops working, switch to the manufacturer’s documented recovery mode and arrange transport rather than opening the sealed unit in the field.
A simple decision process
- Decide whether “no belt” is absolute. If yes, exclude MGU bicycles that use a belt final drive.
- Rank service access. Choose a derailleur if ordinary shop support and roadside improvisation outrank enclosure and automation.
- Set the climbing requirement. Determine the lowest gear needed for your load, grade and surface, then reject bicycles that cannot provide it.
- Choose the protection level. Select a hub or gearbox when repeated derailleur impacts and mud exposure are more concerning than specialist service.
- Check system compatibility. Match the exact Bosch generation, partner drivetrain and firmware; do not rely on a family name alone.
- Judge the whole bicycle. Confirm battery capacity, wheel durability, luggage support, tires, brakes, geometry and local service before comparing drivetrain badges.
Bottom line
For most riders who want a dependable, genuinely belt-free touring and off-road e-bike, a chain with an external derailleur is the safest default because its wear parts and repairs are widely understood. A Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 with E-14 is the premium enclosed-hub route for riders prepared to plan specialist service. A Pinion MGU is compelling when centralized gearing, automatic shifting and loose-climb control outweigh cost and service complexity—but verify the final drive, because an MGU bicycle may still be belt-driven. Treat drivetrain architecture as one part of the decision; the complete loaded bicycle determines whether the trip succeeds.
