If you want to leave Amazon’s ecosystem, Lenovo’s Google Assistant Smart Display family is a documented alternative for a stationary screen with video calling and smart-home controls—but the manufacturer’s US page does not confirm current stock or ongoing support. If you want a device you can carry and use with general apps, a tablet may fit better, though it is not automatically a hands-free smart-home hub. Choose based on the platform and calling service your household already uses, not camera presence alone.
First decide: portable tablet or dedicated smart display?
“Alexa tablet” can mean a tablet that supports Alexa or a dedicated screen device such as an Echo Show. They overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A tablet is designed for general apps and use in different rooms. A dedicated smart display is designed to stay in one place, offer glanceable controls, and respond to voice commands without needing to be picked up.
Start with the way you expect to use it: choose a tablet if portability and app flexibility matter most; investigate a dedicated display if the main job is hands-free calls and a persistent smart-home screen. A tablet can control smart-home devices through apps, but whether it works as a convenient dashboard depends on its operating system, the apps available, and how you set it up.

What Lenovo’s published Smart Display specifications say
Lenovo’s US product page lists three sizes: the Smart Display 7 has a 7-inch screen and 2 MP front camera; the Smart Display 8 has an 8-inch screen and 5 MP camera; and the Smart Display 10 has a 10.1-inch screen and 5 MP camera. Its specification table lists 720p video calling for all three. The same page describes Google Duo calling, voice control for smart-home devices, a camera shutter, and microphone mute. These are manufacturer-published descriptions, not hands-on test results, and they do not establish that the listed calling service or models remain available and supported today. Lenovo also says, “With Lenovo Smart Display, you can use your voice to control over 30,000 household products.” That is Lenovo’s undated compatibility claim, not an independent or current measurement. Check compatibility for each specific light, camera, lock, appliance, and routine you intend to control instead of relying on a broad device count.
Check calling and smart-home compatibility before choosing
A front camera does not guarantee that a device can call the people you need to reach. Match the device’s supported calling service to the accounts your household uses and the devices your contacts can answer on. Support can vary by country, account setup, and service changes, so confirm the exact calling feature and region before purchase.

- Home platform: Identify whether your existing setup uses Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home, SmartThings, or another platform. Confirm that the screen can control the particular devices and routines you use.
- Calling service and contacts: Check the exact service, account requirements, regional availability, and whether the people you call can receive calls on their own devices.
- Privacy controls: Look for the controls that matter to your household, such as a physical camera shutter and microphone mute. Decide whether an always-present camera is acceptable where the screen will sit.
- Availability and support: Check local stock, warranty, software support, and whether advertised calling functions still work in your country. A product page or editorial recommendation alone does not establish these details.
When an Amazon tablet is still the better fit
If portability and general apps matter more than switching ecosystems, Amazon’s overview describes Fire HD 8, Fire HD 10, and Fire Max 11 as tablets supporting Alexa, apps, entertainment, and video calls. That makes a Fire tablet a candidate for someone who wants an Alexa-capable portable screen. A practical shortlist process
- Write down your must-haves. Separate “must be portable” from “must stay available as a hands-free home screen,” and note the calling service and smart-home devices you need.
- Match the existing ecosystem. Prioritize a device that works with your household’s current platform; confirm each important device rather than assuming broad compatibility.
- Verify calls with your contacts. Confirm that the service is currently supported in your region and that the intended recipients can answer calls on their own devices.
- Check the exact model’s status. For Lenovo Smart Displays or Nest Hub Max, confirm local availability, warranty, support, and current feature operation directly before buying.
- Choose the format last. Select a dedicated display for a stationary, voice-first role or a tablet for portable, app-based use—unless your verified setup supports both needs well.
