The strongest alternatives to concentrated AI stocks are diversified technology ETFs, semiconductor and equipment companies, cloud and enterprise software, cybersecurity, data-center infrastructure, and robotics and automation. Investors who want less technology correlation can add broader value or global equities, high-quality bonds, or carefully selected liquid alternatives.
No category is automatically safer. Compare each exposure by how much revenue depends on AI capital spending, whether growth produces free cash flow, valuation, concentration, geography, cyclicality, fees, liquidity, and your own time horizon. An ETF can remove single-company risk while remaining heavily exposed to one sector, country, or handful of mega-cap holdings.
Why look beyond AI stocks now?
AI has become a major source of technology-sector growth, but that success creates concentration and execution risks. BlackRock’s 2025/2026 investment playbook found that 60% of advisers were bullish on AI stocks, while average technology exposure in 901 moderate adviser portfolios was 9% below the S&P 500. Those figures describe sentiment and portfolio positioning, not a forecast or a recommended allocation.

The spending cycle is also unusually large. Vanguard estimated that hyperscalers could spend about $800 billion on AI capital expenditure in 2026. J.P. Morgan Asset Management observed that AI capital expenditure was rising faster than actual AI revenues in 2025–2026, raising the risk that monetization and cash flow may lag investment. If customers slow data-center orders, that pressure can spread from model developers to chip designers, memory suppliers, equipment makers, networking vendors, power providers, and landlords.

Valuation is another reason to diversify. Vanguard’s 2026 portfolio analysis projected muted U.S. stock returns of 4%–5% a year on average over the next five to 10 years, driven substantially by its risk-and-return assessment of large-cap technology. That is a long-term scenario, not a prediction for any individual company.
Vanguard summarized the case for looking elsewhere this way: “More compelling investment opportunities are emerging elsewhere even for those investors most bullish on AI’s prospects.” The practical implication is not to abandon technology, but to separate the technology exposure you want from the AI concentration you do not.
Define what “alternative” means for your portfolio
Before selecting an ETF or sector, identify the risk you are trying to change. The same fund can be an alternative to one investor and an AI proxy to another.
Reduce single-company risk
A broad technology ETF spreads ownership across companies and usually lowers the damage from one product failure, regulatory action, or earnings miss. It may still have substantial exposure to the largest U.S. technology companies, so inspect the holdings and weighting method rather than relying on the word “diversified.”
Reduce AI-revenue dependence
Some businesses sell essential products to data centers without earning most of their revenue from AI applications. Others are marketed as “AI beneficiaries” but depend on the same capital-spending cycle as leading AI stocks. Read segment disclosures and customer concentration notes to distinguish a genuinely different revenue base from a different link in the same chain.
Keep technology exposure while changing the theme
Cybersecurity, enterprise workflow software, industrial automation, and digital infrastructure address needs that existed before generative AI. They can benefit from AI adoption, but their investment case should not require a particular model, chatbot, or accelerator to win.
Lower equity correlation altogether
Value-oriented and non-U.S. equities, high-quality bonds, and some liquid alternatives can offset a concentrated U.S. technology position more effectively than another technology subsector. They introduce their own currency, credit, rate, liquidity, and manager risks.
How the main alternatives compare
The table is a decision framework, not a ranking. “AI-capex dependence” refers to sensitivity to customers’ AI infrastructure budgets; it does not mean a company has no AI revenue. Fees and liquidity are fund-specific and were not stated in the available evidence, so verify them in the current prospectus and trading data.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diversified technology ETF | Mixed software, hardware, services, and internet businesses | Usually medium; depends on index holdings | Ranges from profitable cash generators to high-growth firms; inspect fund-level valuation and cash flow | Lower single-stock risk, but can remain concentrated in U.S. mega-cap technology | Often U.S.-heavy; international mix varies | Medium; different subsectors offset one another imperfectly | Not stated in source material; compare expense ratio, spread, assets, and volume | Investors seeking a simple technology allocation without choosing individual stocks |
| Semiconductors and equipment | Compute, memory, manufacturing tools, testing, and foundry capacity | Medium to high because AI is a major demand source | Capital-intensive and cyclical; free cash flow can swing with utilization and inventory | Often concentrated in a few countries and large holdings; high correlation with hardware spending | Global supply chain with important U.S., Asian, and European exposure | High; orders, pricing, and inventory can turn quickly | Not stated in source material; check fund or security liquidity and bid-ask spread | Investors who accept cycles and want picks-and-shovels exposure rather than model developers |
| Cloud and enterprise software | Subscriptions, usage fees, and digital transformation services | Medium; cloud demand can rise with AI, but products serve broader workloads | Recurring revenue can support cash flow, but compare growth with stock compensation and AI-related capital expenditure | May overlap heavily with large technology indexes and cloud customers | Primarily U.S. leaders with global sales; regional funds differ | Medium; enterprise budgets can tighten during downturns | Not stated in source material; verify fund terms and trading depth | Investors prioritizing recurring revenue and software economics over chip cycles |
| Cybersecurity | Security software, services, identity, and network protection | Low to medium; security is a separate spending priority but AI changes the threat and product landscape | Growth valuations can be high; test whether billings and operating cash flow support them | Sector funds may hold a small group of fast-growing vendors and correlate with growth stocks | Often U.S.-weighted with multinational customers | Medium; security budgets can prove resilient, but valuations remain volatile | Not stated in source material; compare expense ratio, holdings, and liquidity | Investors seeking a digital-security theme with less direct chip exposure |
| Power, cooling, networking, and data centers | Electricity, thermal management, connectivity, equipment, and facility services | Medium to high because data-center build-outs drive demand, even when suppliers are not AI companies | Asset-heavy businesses may produce steadier contracted cash flow or utility-like returns; inspect debt and capital needs | Can diversify model developers but remains tied to data-center construction and rates | Local infrastructure and regulated markets create meaningful regional differences | Medium; construction, power prices, and financing conditions matter | Not stated in source material; infrastructure funds can have varied spreads and structures | Investors wanting physical bottleneck exposure and willing to analyze assets, regulation, and leverage |
| Robotics and automation | Industrial robots, controls, warehouse systems, and productivity software | Low to medium; adoption is broader than generative AI but some projects use AI | Orders and margins depend on industrial production and implementation success | Funds can be concentrated in industrial technology and exposed to manufacturing cycles | Global manufacturing exposure; country mix is fund-specific | High to medium, depending on end markets and recurring service revenue | Not stated in source material; check fund liquidity and turnover | Investors with a long productivity horizon who can tolerate project and factory cycles |
| Value and global equities | Profits, dividends, and assets priced below growth-sector multiples | Generally lower than concentrated AI portfolios, though holdings can still use AI | Often lower starting multiples and higher current income; value traps and weaker balance sheets are possible | Can reduce mega-cap growth concentration and add sector and country exposures | Global funds may include developed and emerging markets; currency risk applies | Medium; financials, energy, industrials, and other sectors have distinct cycles | Not stated in source material; compare fund costs, spreads, and turnover | Investors seeking broader equity risk and a valuation-based counterweight |
| Bonds and liquid alternatives | Interest income, credit premia, trend, relative value, or other non-equity return sources | Usually low direct AI-capex dependence | Bonds offer defined income but face rate and credit risk; liquid alternatives vary by strategy, leverage, and manager | Potentially lower equity correlation, but diversification is not guaranteed in a market shock | Issuer, currency, and strategy geography vary | Depends on duration, credit, leverage, and strategy design | Not stated in source material; fees, dealing frequency, gates, and liquidity terms require careful review | Investors whose primary goal is portfolio stability or differentiated return drivers |
Diversified technology ETFs: the default starting point
A diversified technology ETF is often the cleanest answer when your problem is single-stock risk rather than technology itself. J.P. Morgan identifies index-tracking and sector funds spanning semiconductors, cybersecurity, robotics, and automation as ways to gain exposure without selecting one company.
What to inspect before buying
- Index rules: Determine whether weights are market-cap, equal-weight, revenue-weighted, or capped. A market-cap index can still be dominated by a few mega-cap companies.
- Holdings overlap: Compare the fund’s top holdings with your existing funds. Two different tickers may own nearly the same companies.
- AI exposure: Read company descriptions and revenue segments. A “technology” label does not reveal how much earnings depend on AI infrastructure spending.
- Turnover and tax effects: Frequent rebalancing can create trading costs and taxable distributions in a non-sheltered account.
- Trading quality: Review assets, average volume, bid-ask spread, creation/redemption structure, and the difference between market price and net asset value.
Use a diversified ETF when you want one allocation that you can rebalance. Do not use it as proof that your portfolio is diversified until you check sector, country, and top-holding weights.
Semiconductors and equipment: infrastructure with a cycle
Chip designers, memory suppliers, foundries, packaging companies, testing firms, and lithography or manufacturing-equipment vendors provide the physical capacity on which modern computing depends. Franklin Templeton describes chips, memory, and infrastructure bottlenecks as beneficiaries of the AI build-out.
This exposure is not a low-risk substitute. Semiconductor businesses require large capital budgets, face rapid product obsolescence, and can experience sharp inventory corrections. A company can report strong long-term demand while suffering a near-term margin decline when customers digest stockpiles. Equipment suppliers may have fewer customers, increasing concentration risk.
Questions to ask
- How much of sales comes from data-center, memory, automotive, industrial, or consumer end markets?
- Are customers placing firm orders, or are management statements describing plans and estimates?
- What happens to free cash flow if utilization falls or a major fabrication project is delayed?
- Does the fund concentrate in one country, manufacturing node, or supplier category?
Choose this route when you accept high cyclicality and want exposure to computing demand without owning application companies. Size it according to your ability to withstand drawdowns, not the attractiveness of the long-term theme.
Cloud and enterprise software: recurring revenue, measurable economics
Cloud platforms, business applications, developer tools, and data-management providers sell subscriptions or usage-based services across many industries. Their revenue can benefit from AI workloads, but also from ordinary migration to digital systems, cybersecurity requirements, collaboration, and automation.
The key test is whether growth converts into durable free cash flow. Compare reported revenue growth with operating cash flow, capitalized software costs, stock-based compensation, and spending on data centers or specialized hardware. A company can show recurring revenue while investing so heavily that cash returns remain distant.
Separating broad software from an AI proxy
- Read product and segment disclosures to see whether demand is tied to AI workloads or to a broader customer base.
- Check net retention, renewal rates, customer concentration, and contract duration where disclosed.
- Compare valuation with cash-flow growth rather than using revenue growth alone.
- Look for balance-sheet resilience if enterprise customers delay projects.
A cloud or software ETF may reduce the risk of choosing one platform, but it can still overlap with the largest technology indexes. Map holdings before adding it.

Cybersecurity: a distinct need with its own risks
Fidelity lists digital security as a continuing technology theme. Organizations must protect identities, endpoints, networks, applications, and data regardless of which AI model is popular. That creates a different demand driver from selling processors or training systems.
Cybersecurity is not insulated from AI. Attackers can automate phishing and discovery, while vendors use machine learning to detect threats and prioritize alerts. Products can be displaced, bundled, or consolidated, and high-growth security shares can trade at demanding valuations.
Due-diligence checklist
- Evaluate recurring subscription mix, renewal rates, and customer retention.
- Check whether growth depends on one platform, government contract, or distribution partner.
- Review operating margins and cash flow after stock compensation.
- Examine the fund’s top holdings; a narrow security ETF may be more volatile than expected.
Cybersecurity fits investors who want a technology theme connected to risk management and compliance, while accepting growth-stock valuation and competitive risk.
Recommended Free Tools
Power, cooling, networking, and data-center infrastructure
Every data center needs electricity, thermal management, buildings, connectivity, backup systems, and maintenance. These physical bottlenecks can benefit from rising compute demand even when the supplier does not develop AI software or chips.
Infrastructure exposure has important differences by business model. A regulated utility may have predictable revenue but substantial debt and approval risk. A cooling or electrical-equipment maker may have order-book visibility but remain cyclical. A data-center owner may earn contracted rent while carrying heavy construction and financing costs. Networking companies can enjoy strong demand but face technology transitions and customer concentration.
How to evaluate the bottleneck thesis
- Identify the constrained input: grid connection, generation, cooling capacity, fiber, server space, or specialized equipment.
- Determine whether the company owns assets, sells equipment, or provides services; each model has different margins and capital needs.
- Read debt maturities, interest coverage, lease obligations, and planned capital expenditure.
- Check customer concentration and the geographic limits imposed by power markets, permitting, or regulation.
This category can diversify away from software valuations, but it remains sensitive to the same data-center construction cycle. It is not a guaranteed hedge against an AI slowdown.
Robotics and automation: productivity beyond generative AI
Robotics and automation address labor shortages, quality control, warehouse throughput, and manufacturing productivity. Adoption can advance through factory upgrades and logistics projects that do not depend on one generative-AI platform.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The trade-off is project cyclicality. Customers may postpone installations when industrial production slows, and system integrators may face lengthy deployments or cost overruns. A robotics fund can also be concentrated in a few industrial-technology companies or countries.

What separates durable adoption from a theme
- Look for service, maintenance, software, or consumables revenue that recurs after installation.
- Assess the end markets: automotive, electronics, warehouses, healthcare, and general manufacturing respond differently to recessions.
- Compare order backlog with recognized revenue and examine cancellation terms.
- Check implementation capacity; a strong product can still disappoint if customers cannot deploy it.
Robotics suits investors who can hold through industrial cycles and who want a productivity thesis broader than AI-model spending.
Non-AI software and technology adopters
You do not need to own a technology supplier to benefit from technology. Banks, retailers, manufacturers, logistics companies, and healthcare providers may use software to reduce costs or improve service. Their investment case depends on the underlying industry, so technology is an efficiency input rather than the entire valuation story.
These adopters can reduce pure-play technology concentration, but they introduce operating risks such as credit losses, commodity prices, labor costs, regulation, and consumer demand. Analyze the company’s return on invested capital, competitive position, and balance sheet rather than assuming that any digital initiative creates shareholder value.
Signals that adoption is economically useful
- Management reports measurable productivity, conversion, retention, or error-rate improvements.
- Technology spending is funded by operating cash flow instead of continual equity issuance or excessive borrowing.
- Benefits appear in margins or cash generation, not only in user counts and pilot announcements.
- The company can switch vendors or negotiate pricing, limiting dependence on one technology provider.
Broader value and global equities
Value-oriented and international equity funds can counter a portfolio dominated by expensive U.S. growth shares. They add financials, industrials, energy, health care, consumer companies, and other sectors whose earnings drivers differ from cloud and semiconductor spending.
Global diversification introduces currency movements, political risk, accounting differences, and unequal market liquidity. Emerging-market funds can be especially volatile. A low valuation can reflect real problems, so inspect debt, profitability, governance, and industry structure.
Use this allocation when your objective is to reduce mega-cap technology concentration while retaining long-term equity growth. It is a portfolio diversifier, not a way to eliminate equity losses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bonds and liquid alternatives for lower correlation
High-quality government and investment-grade bonds can provide income and a potential ballast when growth-stock valuations fall, although rising rates reduce bond prices and credit spreads can widen. Match duration and credit exposure to the role you need; a long-duration bond fund behaves differently from a short-term cash-like fund.

Questions before adding an alternative
- What return source should work if U.S. technology falls?
- How often can you redeem, and what gates, notice periods, or suspension terms apply?
- What leverage, derivatives, short positions, or counterparty exposures are used?
- Are total fees and performance allocations clear enough to compare with simpler funds?
A step-by-step process for choosing an alternative
- Set the objective. Write whether you want less single-stock risk, less AI-capex dependence, lower equity correlation, more income, or broader global exposure. One holding rarely accomplishes all five.
- Measure your starting portfolio. List each fund’s top holdings, sector weights, country weights, and approximate technology exposure. Count indirect overlap; a cloud fund and a broad index may own many of the same companies.
- Classify the revenue driver. Label each candidate as application software, infrastructure, security, industrial automation, consumer technology, value equity, bond, or alternative. Then estimate how a slowdown in AI capital spending would affect demand.
- Test cash-flow durability. Review operating cash flow, free cash flow, capital expenditure, debt maturities, stock compensation, and customer concentration. For funds, read the largest holdings and sector allocation rather than relying on the fund name.
- Check valuation and expectations. Compare price-to-earnings, price-to-sales, free-cash-flow yield, or other appropriate measures with growth and profitability. A cheaper multiple can signal weaker quality; a high multiple requires stronger execution.
- Assess geography and currency. Decide whether you want U.S., developed-market, emerging-market, or global exposure. Understand how currency movements affect returns in your home currency.
- Review implementation costs. Compare expense ratio, bid-ask spread, turnover, taxes, minimums, redemption terms, and the availability of fractional or scheduled purchases. The source material does not establish current fees for any particular fund.
- Choose a position size. Treat a narrow sector as a satellite allocation unless your plan explicitly accepts its concentration. Set a maximum weight before buying, not after a rally.
- Define a review trigger. Revisit the holding when its index methodology changes, AI-related revenue becomes dominant, cash flow deteriorates, debt rises materially, or your objective changes. Do not trade solely because headlines change.
Illustrative portfolio roles
These examples describe roles, not personalized allocations or forecasts. Your tax position, emergency reserves, time horizon, and loss tolerance determine appropriate weights.
| Investor objective | Possible core | Satellite exposures | Main risk to monitor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technology exposure with less single-stock risk | Diversified technology ETF | Small allocations to cybersecurity or automation | Hidden mega-cap and U.S. concentration |
| Participate in infrastructure spending without owning model developers | Broad equity or technology fund | Semiconductors, equipment, power, cooling, networking, or data centers | AI-capex slowdown, customer concentration, and high cyclicality |
| Emphasize recurring digital services | Broad equity allocation | Cloud and enterprise software | Valuation, stock compensation, and weak free-cash-flow conversion |
| Reduce growth-stock correlation | Global or value-oriented equities plus high-quality bonds | Limited liquid alternatives if understood | Currency, rates, credit, fees, and the possibility that correlations rise in a crisis |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming an ETF is automatically diversified
Sector funds can hold dozens of securities while deriving most risk from a few companies. Correct this by reviewing concentration, overlap, and index caps.
Replacing one AI trade with another
A data-center equipment fund may fall with AI stocks if customers cancel expansion. Correct this by separating direct AI revenue, AI-capex sensitivity, and broader end-market demand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUsing revenue growth as a substitute for cash flow
Rapid sales growth can require equally rapid spending. Correct this by comparing free cash flow after capital expenditure, dilution, and financing needs.
Ignoring cyclicality
Semiconductors, equipment, and robotics can suffer inventory corrections even when their long-term markets expand. Correct this by stress-testing a year of lower orders, margins, or utilization.
Treating alternatives as guaranteed protection
Bonds, global equities, and liquid alternatives can all lose money, and correlations can rise during a crisis. Correct this by understanding the specific return source, liquidity, leverage, and historical behavior of each strategy.
Buying based on a theme without a time horizon
Infrastructure projects and automation deployments can take years. Correct this by matching the holding period to the investment cycle and setting rebalancing rules in advance.

Review the portfolio at a regular interval, such as quarterly or semiannually, and after material changes to an index or fund mandate. Track the measures that matter for each exposure:
- AI sensitivity: customer spending plans, data-center orders, and the share of revenue tied to AI workloads.
- Cash flow: operating cash flow, capital expenditure, free-cash-flow margin, dilution, and debt.
- Concentration: top-10 holdings, sector weights, country weights, and overlap with existing positions.
- Valuation: changes in multiples relative to earnings and cash-flow expectations.
- Fund quality: index methodology, expense ratio, assets, spread, tracking difference, securities lending policy, and tax distributions.
- Portfolio role: whether the position is still reducing the risk you intended to reduce.
Rebalance according to a written band or calendar instead of reacting to a single earnings report. If the holding no longer serves its stated role, replace it deliberately and account for taxes and transaction costs.
Bottom line for technology investors
The best alternative to a concentrated AI stock is usually a combination rather than one replacement ticker: a diversified technology core, one or two carefully sized themes such as cybersecurity, semiconductors, cloud, infrastructure, or automation, and a non-technology allocation when lower correlation matters. Judge every choice by revenue dependence, cash-flow durability, valuation, concentration, geography, cyclicality, fees, liquidity, and fit with your risk tolerance. AI may continue to expand, but a portfolio does not need to depend on one company or one spending cycle to participate in technology’s long-term progress.
