There is no defensible universal winner among alternatives to AI legal assistants. Choose by the jurisdiction and authority your lawyers need, the quality of source links and citation checking, the platform’s ability to ingest and compare your documents, its data controls, and results on your own representative matters.
The shortlist below covers Lexis+ with Protégé, Harvey, Vincent AI by vLex, and Thomson Reuters CoCounsel. Treat vendor descriptions as positioning, not proof of equivalent coverage or accuracy. Confirm current jurisdictions, entitlements, security terms, document-review features, and prices before signing.
What you are actually choosing
“AI legal research software” and “AI legal document review” overlap, but they solve different problems. Research systems retrieve and synthesize authority: statutes, regulations, cases, administrative materials, and secondary sources. Document-review systems work on files supplied by your team, such as contracts, discovery productions, policies, diligence folders, or pleadings. They extract text, compare versions, find clauses or issues, answer questions over a controlled collection, and support a review workflow.

A polished answer over a legal corpus does not demonstrate that a product can process a 2,000-document deal room, preserve page-level references, compare redlines, or route findings to reviewers. Conversely, a strong document-analysis workspace may not contain the primary law or citator functions needed for a defensible memorandum. Define the two workflows separately before comparing products.

Questions that determine the shortlist
- Jurisdiction: Which countries, states, provinces, courts, agencies, and time periods must be covered?
- Authority: Do you need primary law only, or also treatises, practical guidance, docket materials, and firm work product?
- Evidence trail: Can every material assertion open the underlying passage, and can a lawyer check whether the authority is still valid?
- Document work: Can the system ingest your file types, retain page and paragraph locations, compare versions, identify issues, and export a review record?
- Controls: Where are prompts and uploaded files stored, who can administer access, and are customer materials used to train a shared model?
- Workflow: Does it connect to the document-management, email, practice-management, or review tools your team already uses?

How each option should be investigated
Lexis+ with Protégé
LexisNexis currently presents Lexis+ with Protégé as a legal AI solution for drafting and research. That positioning makes it a logical candidate when your team already depends on the provider’s content, but it does not establish that every jurisdiction, publication, or feature is included in every edition.
During a demonstration, ask the representative to identify the exact source behind each sentence in a generated memo. Check whether the link opens the quoted passage, whether later treatment or amendments are visible, and whether the system distinguishes binding from persuasive authority. Then run the same prompt against a closed set of your documents to see whether the answer separates supplied material from external law.

Harvey’s official homepage describes AI software for legal and professional services. Before treating it as an AI legal research software choice, establish what research corpus is available to your region, practice, and plan. A platform optimized for firm workflows may still require a separate subscription for comprehensive primary-law research.
For document work, provide a small, permission-cleared sample containing a clean agreement, a redline, a scanned PDF, and a document with a deliberate exception. Ask for a clause comparison, an issue list, and page-level support. Record whether reviewers can correct a finding, preserve that correction, and export a defensible work product.

Confirm coverage rather than inferring it from the product name: ask which courts, legislatures, agencies, languages, and historical periods are searchable for your matter. Also ask whether secondary sources are licensed in the specific plan or must be added.
Use a statutory-survey prompt and a case-law prompt that each have a known answer. Require the system to show the underlying authority and explain why each source supports the proposition. For uploaded files, test privilege controls, collection boundaries, deduplication, version handling, and whether an answer can be restricted to the documents you selected.
Thomson Reuters CoCounsel
CoCounsel appears in current search results as a relevant legal research and AI assistant, but precise present packaging, feature entitlements, and pricing should not be inferred without a current product confirmation. Ask the vendor to map each requested capability to a named plan and jurisdiction.
Request two separate demonstrations: one over the vendor’s legal content and one over your controlled document set. Insist on showing citations, source passages, document identifiers, and an export suitable for lawyer review. If the demonstration uses only prepared examples, repeat it with your own sanitized questions and files.

Use a two-lane requirements sheet so a strong result in one lane cannot hide a gap in the other.

A defensible evaluation procedure
Run the same evaluation for every shortlisted platform. A scripted pilot is more informative than a polished sales demonstration.
- Define the matters. Select two or three representative tasks, such as a jurisdiction-specific research memo, a multi-jurisdiction statutory survey, and a contract review. State the jurisdiction, date cutoff, required authorities, confidentiality level, and expected deliverable.
- Build a gold set. Have experienced lawyers identify the authorities, clauses, exceptions, and conclusions that a competent answer must contain. Include negative examples and deliberately ambiguous questions.
- Prepare controlled documents. Use permission-cleared copies with stable filenames and page numbers. Include a scanned file, a redline, duplicate language, and at least one document that should not support the answer.
- Use identical prompts. Keep wording, attachments, temperature or creativity settings, and date restrictions consistent. Save the full prompt and output for audit.
- Score support, not style. For every material assertion, mark whether the source exists, actually supports the proposition, is quoted accurately, and remains valid. Record missed authorities, false support, omissions, and unexplained leaps.
- Measure lawyer time. Track minutes to reach a verifiable final answer, including time spent opening citations, correcting errors, deduplicating results, and transferring findings into the matter file.
- Repeat important tasks. Run each task more than once and with small prompt variations. A single attractive answer is not evidence of reliable behavior.
- Review operational fit. Test permissions, exports, audit logs, deletion requests, administrator controls, and integration with the systems your lawyers actually use.
- Document the decision. Keep the prompts, source set, scores, screenshots, plan name, date, and known limitations. Re-run the benchmark after major product or corpus changes.

What published accuracy figures do—and do not—tell you
Independent evaluations show why lawyer verification remains necessary. A 2024 evaluation by Magesh and colleagues reported 65% accurate answers for Lexis+ AI and 42% for Westlaw AI-Assisted Research on the versions and query set tested. The study also reported hallucinations and incomplete answers. Those percentages describe that experiment; they are not current universal rankings and do not establish how Lexis+ with Protégé or any other present product will perform on your matters.
A separate 2026 study by Afane and colleagues reported 58% accuracy for Westlaw AI and 64% for Lexis+ AI on a multi-jurisdictional statutory-survey benchmark. That was a different task, with different methods and questions, so its figures cannot be compared directly with the 2024 results as if both were one leaderboard. The studies document reasoning and retrieval failures even when a system presents citations.
A clickable citation is evidence to inspect, not a guarantee that the associated claim is correct. Require the lawyer responsible for the work to open the source, read the relevant context, check amendments or subsequent treatment, and confirm that the source actually supports the conclusion.
Security, confidentiality, and governance questions
Do not upload client material until your organization has approved the provider’s written terms. Ask each vendor for clear answers to the following:

- Is customer content used to train a shared model, and can that use be disabled contractually and technically?
- Where are prompts, uploaded files, embeddings, logs, and backups stored, and can you select a required region?
- How are data encrypted in transit and at rest? Who controls keys, and what staff or subprocessors can access content?
- What are the default retention and deletion periods? Can you issue a legal hold or obtain a verifiable deletion certificate?
- Are customer tenants logically or physically segregated? What audit events are available to administrators?
- Which identity providers, multifactor controls, role permissions, and document-level restrictions are supported?
- How are scanned PDFs, privileged material, personally identifiable information, and confidential third-party data handled?
- What happens to saved prompts and outputs when a user leaves, a matter closes, or a subscription ends?
- Can the provider notify you of model, corpus, subprocessor, or terms changes that affect confidentiality or accuracy?
Pricing and procurement without false precision
Current comparable prices were not established for all four products, and legal-AI plans can vary by jurisdiction, content package, seat, usage, storage, and feature entitlement. Do not compare a headline subscription number with an enterprise quote or assume that a research license includes document analysis.
Request a written quote that names the edition, territory, included sources, user and usage limits, document-volume limits, overage rules, implementation fees, support level, renewal terms, and cancellation rights. Ask the vendor to identify which capabilities in the demonstration require an add-on. Price the complete workflow: licenses, secure storage, integration work, lawyer verification, training, and governance.

Common failure modes and fixes
Choosing by brand or demonstration polish
A fluent answer can conceal missing authority, unsupported reasoning, or a restricted corpus. Fix this by requiring a source-backed answer to a question whose correct result your lawyers already know.
Assuming a citation means the answer is safe
Systems can attach a real citation to an overstated or mismatched proposition. Open the cited passage, inspect context and validity, and record the verification step in the matter file.
Testing only research prompts
Research performance says little about document ingestion, comparison, issue spotting, or reviewer collaboration. Include representative files and score omissions and false positives.

Ignoring jurisdiction and date boundaries
A result can be accurate for one court or historical period and wrong for another. Put jurisdiction, governing law, and an as-of date in every test prompt, then verify the corpus actually searched.
Uploading confidential material too early
Unapproved uploads can create confidentiality and retention risk. Complete procurement and security review first, then begin with sanitized or synthetic files.
Comparing incompatible accuracy numbers
Different benchmarks measure different tasks. Keep each study’s date, query set, method, and definition of accuracy attached to its figure, and rely on your shared evaluation for a buying decision.

Set an end date, success thresholds, named reviewers, and a rollback plan. Reassess after model, corpus, or plan changes rather than assuming the pilot result remains current.
Practical rollout after selection
- Start with low-risk, high-volume work. Use tasks where a lawyer can readily inspect every source and where the system’s output is an aid rather than the final legal judgment.
- Create approved prompt patterns. Require jurisdiction, date, audience, source restrictions, and an instruction to distinguish supplied documents from external authority.
- Keep a verification record. Save the prompt, output, source links, corrections, and responsible lawyer with the matter materials.
- Train reviewers on failure modes. Demonstrate hallucinated support, omitted exceptions, stale law, OCR errors, and leakage across document collections.
- Monitor continuously. Sample completed work, track unsupported claims and missed issues, and repeat the benchmark after significant updates.
- Define a stop rule. Suspend use for a workflow if omission, citation, confidentiality, or access-control failures exceed the threshold approved by your firm.
The best alternative to an AI legal assistant is the product that fits your jurisdiction, authority, documents, controls, and verification process—not the one with the most impressive general description. A disciplined, shared evaluation lets your team make that choice without treating vendor marketing or a single accuracy statistic as a guarantee.
