The best alternative depends on whether you want a modular AV receiver with separate speakers or a packaged soundbar system. A discrete 5.1.2 layout uses five ear-level channels, one subwoofer and two height channels positioned in the room. Samsung’s HW-Q990F and JBL’s Bar 1300MK2 are packaged 11.1.4 systems with included surrounds and subwoofers, so they offer easier installation rather than an equivalent channel layout. A receiver-based package, such as the Sony STR-AN1000 example described by TechRadar, is closer to the traditional 5.1.2 concept but requires more space, wiring and setup.
Use the comparison below to match the system to your room, ceiling, television connections and tolerance for installation work. No controlled same-room test in the available evidence establishes a universal sound-quality winner.
What “alternative” means here
A Sony 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos theater is normally understood as a discrete speaker system: an AV receiver drives a separate center speaker, left and right front speakers, left and right surrounds, two height speakers and a subwoofer. Each speaker has a dedicated position and, usually, a physical cable run.
Recommended Free Tools
The Samsung HW-Q990F and JBL Bar 1300MK2 take a different approach. They bundle a soundbar, surround speakers and a subwoofer, with the electronics and amplification integrated into the package. Their 11.1.4 labels indicate more processing and virtual or reflected channels than a 5.1.2 layout, not a direct measure of sound quality. A higher channel count can be attractive for convenience, but it does not make the systems interchangeable in placement, upgradeability or room calibration.

Samsung HW-Q990F: the simplest complete package
What is included
Samsung’s UK listing describes the HW-Q990F as an 11.1.4-channel Q-series soundbar package for 2025. It lists 23 speakers, including center, up-firing, front-wide and side-firing drivers. The package includes wireless rear speakers and a wireless subwoofer, so you do not need to buy those components separately.
Dolby Atmos support and eARC are listed. eARC allows a compatible television to send higher-bandwidth audio formats from built-in streaming apps or connected devices to the soundbar through the television’s eARC port. Confirm that both your TV and cable support eARC; a standard ARC connection may have more limited format support.

- You want one box with all major speakers included. The rear speakers and subwoofer are part of the package rather than optional purchases.
- You dislike long speaker cables. The rear channels communicate wirelessly, although each rear unit still needs a nearby power outlet.
- Your room can support reflected height effects. Up-firing drivers work best when the ceiling is reasonably reflective and the seating is positioned within the sound field.
- Your television has eARC. This simplifies routing audio from television apps and modern source devices.
Important limitations
The 11.1.4 label does not prove that the HW-Q990F will sound better than a well-positioned 5.1.2 system. Reflected height channels depend on ceiling height, ceiling material, speaker-to-ceiling angles and seating position. A large open-plan room or an irregular ceiling can reduce the precision of those effects.
The cited specification is the UK model. Confirm the exact local suffix, wireless standards, included accessories, supported audio formats and current price in your country. Availability and bundled features are not established universally.

JBL Bar 1300MK2: detachable surround speakers
How its design differs
JBL’s technical specification sheet describes the Bar 1300MK2 as an 11.1.4-channel Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundbar system. Its defining practical feature is detachable surround speakers. You can place the modules behind or beside the seating area for movie night, then detach them when you want a less permanent setup.
When detachable surrounds make sense
- Shared living rooms: remove the surround modules when the room needs to stay open for conversation or other activities.
- Occasional surround use: deploy the modules for films and games without leaving separate speakers permanently installed.
- Rental homes: avoid running speaker cable through walls or along permanent routes.
- Flexible seating: move the modules when the main seating position changes.
Trade-offs to check before purchase
Detachable speakers are not the same as passive wired surrounds. Check how the local version charges or powers the modules, how long they operate away from their charging points and whether your room has convenient positions beside or behind the seats. The cited JBL sheet confirms the detachable design and 11.1.4 Dolby Atmos/DTS:X configuration, but it does not establish every HDMI, eARC or regional input detail. Verify those specifications on the product page for your market.

As with the Samsung system, 11.1.4 describes the system’s processing and driver arrangement; it is not a controlled ranking against a discrete 5.1.2 theater.
Modular alternative: an AV receiver with separate speakers
The documented example
TechRadar’s October 2026 deal article describes a 5.1.2 package built around the Sony STR-AN1000 receiver. The example uses separate center, Atmos-height, floorstanding, surround and subwoofer speakers. That is the same broad architecture as a conventional 5.1.2 theater: the receiver handles decoding, amplification, source switching and room setup while each speaker remains an independent component.
The article mentions a Best Buy deal price at publication. Because that was a temporary retailer offer, it should not be treated as a current or durable price. The example demonstrates the modular category; it is not independent laboratory evidence that this particular package is the right choice for every room.

- An all-in-one home theater package - The YHT-4970U comes with a Dolby Atmos AV Receiver (Yamaha RX300A), a 5.1 speaker package (two front channel speakers, a center channel speaker, two surround channel speakers, and a powered subwoofer), plus a subwoofer cable and speaker wire all in one box.
- Step into lifelike sonic worlds - Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X for deeply dimensional, lifelike sound that draws you into every moment of your favorite entertainment, plus crystal-clear dialogue so you can hear every word.
- Stunning visual realism - Supports ultra-high definition 4K/120 and 8K/60 video, high-performance HDMI switching, advanced Dolby Vision and HDR10+ dynamic range technologies, HDMI eARC/ARC and next-gen gaming features like ALLM and VRR.
- Room Correction - Experience perfect sound in any room. An included setup microphone measures your room’s acoustics and speaker characteristics, allowing the receiver to automatically optimize sound performance.
- Easy streaming with Bluetooth Multipoint - Stream all your favorite music, podcasts and audiobooks wirelessly. Built-in Bluetooth Multipoint lets you pair two source devices and instantly switch between them.
Advantages of the modular route
- Placement control: you can position the center, surrounds, subwoofer and height speakers according to your room rather than the soundbar’s enclosure.
- Upgrade paths: replace the subwoofer, add better front speakers or change the receiver without discarding the entire system.
- True separation: left, center, right and surround speakers are physically separated, which can produce more precise imaging when the room and calibration are suitable.
- Input flexibility: the receiver can centralize multiple HDMI sources, game consoles and media players, subject to the chosen model’s specifications.
Costs beyond the ticket price
A receiver-based system needs speaker wire, stands or wall mounts, power for the receiver and subwoofer, and time for placement and calibration. Height speakers may require ceiling mounting, high front-wall placement or compatible up-firing modules. You also need room for the receiver and separate speakers. Compare the complete installed cost, not only the receiver price.

Room and ceiling checks before buying
Measure the listening area
Mark the main seat, the television wall and the side and rear boundaries. A packaged system still needs the rear modules to sit beside or behind the listening position. If the sofa is against the back wall, there may be no useful location for rear channels, and a system advertised with many channels cannot overcome poor geometry.
Inspect the ceiling
Up-firing height channels depend on reflected sound. Flat, reasonably reflective ceilings are generally more suitable than heavily textured, vaulted or very high ceilings. If your ceiling geometry is unsuitable, a receiver package with directly mounted height speakers gives you more placement control, provided installation is practical.
Check power and cable routes
Wireless does not mean cable-free. Soundbar subwoofers and rear speakers need power, and detachable modules may need periodic charging or docking. A modular system adds signal cables from the receiver to every passive speaker and may require stands, wall brackets or in-wall routing.
Connectivity checklist
- Locate the TV’s HDMI port labeled eARC or ARC. Use eARC when available for the broadest compatible audio return path.
- Count your source devices: game consoles, disc players, set-top boxes and streaming devices. A soundbar may have fewer physical inputs than an AV receiver; verify the exact model specification.
- Confirm video pass-through requirements, including the resolution, refresh rate and HDR formats used by your sources. Do not assume a product supports every format merely because it supports Dolby Atmos.
- Use certified HDMI cables appropriate to your devices and keep the TV, receiver or soundbar firmware current during setup.
- For a modular system, verify that the receiver has enough amplified channels for the intended 5.1.2 layout and that the speaker impedance and power requirements are compatible.
Installation guide for a packaged soundbar
- Place the bar centrally. Align it with the television and keep the front of the bar unobstructed. If the TV is wall-mounted, ensure the bar does not block the screen or remote sensor.
- Connect HDMI eARC. Run an HDMI cable from the soundbar’s eARC/ARC port to the matching television port. Connect source devices directly to the soundbar only when its inputs meet your video requirements.
- Position the subwoofer. Start near the front wall, then test another nearby position if bass sounds uneven. Avoid sealing it inside a cabinet.
- Position the rear speakers. Place Samsung’s wireless rears or JBL’s detachable modules beside or behind the main seat, at similar heights and with a clear path toward the listeners.
- Power and pair every unit. Connect the bar, subwoofer and rears to power. Follow the model’s pairing procedure and wait for status indicators to confirm the links.
- Run room calibration. Use the supplied microphone or app procedure if your model provides one. Keep the room quiet and leave furniture in its normal position.
- Test real content. Play an Atmos title, a non-Atmos film and ordinary television. Confirm that dialogue is clear, surrounds are active and the subwoofer does not dominate.
Installation guide for a modular 5.1.2 system
- Choose the listening reference. Put the main seat in its normal location before placing speakers. Calibration cannot fully correct a fundamentally unsuitable layout.
- Place the front stage. Center the center speaker under or above the screen. Keep the left and right speakers symmetrical around the television and angle them toward the main seat when appropriate.
- Place the surrounds. Set the left and right surround speakers to the sides or slightly behind the seating area, at comparable heights and distances.
- Add the two height channels. Use the receiver’s supported placement option: direct ceiling speakers, high front speakers or compatible up-firing modules. Follow the receiver’s channel-assignment labels rather than guessing.
- Position the subwoofer. Begin near the front of the room and move it if bass nulls or excessive boom are obvious. Keep the subwoofer away from rattling furniture.
- Wire and label channels. Connect each speaker to the matching receiver terminal, observing polarity. Label both ends of every cable before moving on.
- Connect the TV and sources. Use the receiver’s HDMI output to the television’s ARC/eARC input, then connect source devices to the receiver inputs that match their video requirements.
- Run automatic calibration, then verify manually. Check speaker presence, distances, crossover settings and subwoofer level after the automated routine. Listen from the main seat, not while standing beside a speaker.
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming more channels guarantee better sound
11.1.4 and 5.1.2 describe different architectures. If dialogue is weak or effects seem vague, inspect placement, calibration and room reflections before blaming the channel count.
Rank #4
- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Putting rear speakers in the wrong place
Rear modules pushed into corners or placed directly beside the listener can make effects uneven. Move them to symmetrical positions around the main seat and rerun calibration.
Using ARC when eARC is needed
If Atmos from a television app does not arrive, check the TV audio-output setting, the HDMI port label and the cable. The Samsung listing specifically documents eARC; other products require model-specific confirmation.
Ignoring regional model suffixes
A product name can cover different regional versions. Confirm the exact suffix, included speakers, wireless behavior, input count, supported formats, warranty and stock for your country.
Comparing a temporary deal with a normal price
The TechRadar Sony package article reported a Best Buy deal at publication, but that offer can expire. Check a current retailer listing and include the cost of stands, mounts, cables and installation when comparing systems.
How to make the final decision
- Choose Samsung HW-Q990F if you want a complete wireless-rear package, have a suitable room for reflected height effects and value a straightforward eARC connection. Verify the local model and price first.
- Choose JBL Bar 1300MK2 if detachable surround modules are more useful than permanently separate speakers. Confirm charging, inputs and regional availability before purchase.
- Choose a modular receiver and speaker package if you want a genuine discrete 5.1.2 layout, independent placement and the ability to upgrade components over time. Budget for wiring, stands or mounts, calibration and installation.
These are different solutions to different problems. The soundbar packages prioritize convenience and bundled hardware; the receiver route prioritizes control and expandability. Match that trade-off to your room rather than selecting solely by the largest channel number.
Prices, availability and verification
No comparable current prices, stock levels or regional bundles are established for all three approaches. The Samsung specifications cited are from its UK product page, the JBL information comes from a manufacturer specification sheet, and the Sony receiver package was described in a time-sensitive TechRadar deal article. Before placing an order, verify the local product page, model suffix, included rear speakers and subwoofer, HDMI/eARC behavior, warranty and return policy.
