Choose an Android tablet first if your Android apps must run locally and reliably on the replacement device. Confirm every essential app in Google Play for the exact tablet model before buying. A keyboard case can improve typing, but it does not turn Android into Windows.

A Windows laptop is a conditional second choice: Microsoft Phone Link can mirror selected apps from a supported Android phone or tablet, but the apps continue running on that mobile device rather than being installed on Windows. Microsoft describes this as using apps from your Android device on your PC. ChromeOS Flex is not a solution for this requirement because Google says Flex devices do not support Google Play or Android apps.

Which Chromebook alternative actually runs Android apps?

The word “alternative” can mean two different things. You may want a different laptop that can display a few mobile apps, or you may need a device on which Android apps are installed, updated and used directly. Those are not equivalent experiences.

Option Where the Android app runs Best fit Important limits
Android tablet Directly on the tablet Android apps are the main requirement and a tablet form factor is acceptable Check each app on the exact model; tablet layouts, keyboard support and required hardware vary by app
Windows laptop with Phone Link On a connected, supported Android phone or tablet, mirrored to Windows You need Windows desktop software and only selected mobile apps on the PC screen Feature availability depends on supported devices and markets; apps are not installed on Windows and some do not work well with a mouse or keyboard
ChromeOS Flex Nowhere on the Flex computer You want a lightweight ChromeOS-like system for web and Linux workloads, not Android apps Google Play and Android apps are unsupported
Another Chromebook On supported ChromeOS hardware through Google Play You are willing to remain in ChromeOS and can verify device and app support Support is device-dependent; processor architecture can affect availability, speed and battery life

For a requirement that says “my apps must run on the replacement itself,” the tablet row is the only direct category-level answer. Phone Link and Chromebook support are conditional layers around a host platform, while Flex has no Android-app layer at all.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Android tablets: the most direct replacement

Why a tablet is the default recommendation

An Android tablet uses the same operating-system app model as an Android phone, so compatible applications are installed from Google Play and run on the tablet rather than being streamed from another computer. That avoids the central uncertainty of Phone Link: whether the app can be mirrored and whether the phone remains nearby, charged and supported.

Large-screen Android is an established platform rather than a niche workaround. The Google Android Developers adaptive-apps page accessed in 2026 describes more than 580 million large-screen Android devices. The same page says users of large-screen form factors represent “9x more in dollar value” than users with only a phone, but it does not give a reference year or methodology beside that figure, so it should not be treated as a dated consumer-spending statistic.

Do not interpret the size of the ecosystem as a promise that every phone app is polished on every tablet. Android’s own guidance covers adaptive layouts and external input at the platform level; individual developers still decide whether their app supports a tablet layout, resizable windows, landscape orientation, a stylus or a physical keyboard.

Verify every must-have app before purchase

Compatibility is a property of the app-and-device combination, not of the Android brand name. Use Google Play’s device-specific tools and the developer’s current listing to check the exact tablet model.

  1. Make an inventory. Write down the apps that are genuinely required, including work, banking, authentication, accessibility, printing, camera and offline apps. Separate “must work” from “nice to have.”
  2. Open each listing in Google Play. Use the device filter described in Google’s instructions for finding apps for a tablet and other devices. Select the exact tablet, not merely a manufacturer or Android version.
  3. Read the current requirements. Look for minimum Android version, supported screen sizes, country restrictions, required sensors, camera features, Bluetooth hardware, stylus support, subscription status and any note that the app is phone-only.
  4. Check the developer’s screenshots and release notes. A listing that installs may still display a stretched phone interface, hide controls in landscape mode or omit tablet-specific functions.
  5. Test the workflow after setup. Sign in, complete the task you actually perform, attach files, print or scan if necessary, and try both portrait and landscape. Installation alone is not a reliability test.

If Google Play marks an app as unavailable for that model, treat that as a stop sign. Sideloading an APK can bypass a store filter but does not create missing hardware support, a compatible processor build, a usable layout or a supported update path.

Keyboard, trackpad and stylus expectations

A keyboard case is useful for email, documents and terminal-style typing. Android supports external keyboards, trackpads, mice and styluses as platform input categories, and Google documents those adaptive-input considerations at Android Developers. The accessory remains input hardware: it does not provide a desktop file manager, desktop windowing model or Windows-only application compatibility.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Before choosing a case, check the tablet’s connector or Bluetooth requirements, key layout, hinge angles, charging arrangement and whether the case blocks the camera or stylus storage. Test text selection, keyboard shortcuts and pointer behavior in the particular apps you use. Some mobile apps accept text from a keyboard but still expect touch gestures for navigation.

Windows laptop with Phone Link: useful mirroring, not native Android

What actually happens

Phone Link’s Apps feature lets a supported Windows PC interact with selected apps hosted on a linked Android phone or tablet. Microsoft’s support explanation is explicit: “No, apps you open will be running from your Android device.” The Windows screen is a control and display surface; the application package, data and execution remain on the mobile device.

This can be attractive when you need full Windows programs alongside a few mobile apps. You keep the Android device for notifications, mobile hardware and app updates, while using a larger monitor, keyboard or mouse for supported tasks. It is not a way to install an Android APK into Windows, and it does not make every mobile app a desktop application.

Requirements to verify before relying on it

  • A compatible Windows PC and current Phone Link software.
  • An Android phone or tablet that supports the required Phone Link experience.
  • The companion linking function enabled on that Android device, with the required account and permissions.
  • A supported market and feature combination. Microsoft maintains a changing device and feature list at Supported devices for Phone Link experiences.
  • A network connection and a phone that remains powered, connected and within the conditions required by the feature.

Microsoft’s support requirements and supported-device tables can change. Check them for your phone model and region immediately before purchase; a Windows laptop cannot add Phone Link Apps support to an incompatible handset.

Typical setup path

  1. On Windows, open Phone Link and choose the option to link an Android device.
  2. On the Android phone or tablet, install or open the companion linking function requested by Phone Link.
  3. Sign in with the requested account and follow the on-screen pairing process, commonly including a QR code or confirmation code.
  4. Approve the requested notifications, Bluetooth, local-network and app permissions. Restricting a permission can remove calls, messages or app features.
  5. After pairing, open the Apps area in Phone Link and select an available application. The app window should show that it is being controlled from the connected Android device.

Labels and pairing prompts differ by Windows release and Android manufacturer. Use Microsoft’s current support article, Use apps from your Android device on your PC, if a screen in your build does not match these general steps.

Where Phone Link falls short

  • Not every app is offered. Support is constrained by the handset, Windows version, market and app behavior.
  • It is not an independent PC install. If the phone is switched off, disconnected, locked in a restricted state or out of range, the mirrored session may stop.
  • Mouse and keyboard behavior is variable. A touch-first app may ignore right-click, hover, multi-touch, drag gestures or keyboard shortcuts.
  • Performance follows the connection. Delays, dropped sessions and visual artifacts are possible even when the app itself runs correctly on the phone.
  • Mobile hardware remains the limit. The phone’s camera, GPS, sensors, storage and notifications are still the resources being used; a laptop upgrade does not replace them.

Choose this route only when the Android device is already supported and your required apps are among the apps Phone Link exposes. It is a convenient companion workflow, not a substitute for a tablet when local Android execution is non-negotiable.

ChromeOS Flex: similar name, incompatible app requirement

ChromeOS Flex is a separate operating system intended for compatible PCs and Macs. Its browser-centered interface can resemble ChromeOS, but it does not include the Google Play layer used by supported Chromebooks. Google’s ChromeOS Flex FAQ states that Google Play and Android apps are not supported on Flex devices.

That means there is no supported setting to turn on, no Play Store package to add and no hardware specification that makes a Flex installation run Android apps natively. Installing Flex because a Chromebook’s interface is familiar is reasonable for web applications, Linux software or device reuse; it is the wrong choice when Android app compatibility is the purchase criterion.

Android apps may still be reachable through a browser-based service or a remote computer, but those are different workflows and should not be described as Android apps running on Flex. If an app must work offline, access local sensors or use Android-only authentication, choose a tablet or a supported ChromeOS device instead.

Staying with ChromeOS: support is device-specific

Check the model, not just the word “Chromebook”

If you are open to buying another Chromebook, verify the exact model in the Chromium Projects list of ChromeOS systems supporting Android apps. The current device page says that, unless otherwise specified, devices launched in 2019 or later support Android apps, while the historical list shows a mixture of support among earlier models. A release year is therefore a useful screening rule, not a guarantee.

Confirm the listing for the exact processor, board and ChromeOS channel. Two computers sold under a similar family name can have different support status, update schedules or processor architectures.

Why an app can be available yet still perform poorly

Many ChromeOS devices use x86 processors, while many Android phones use ARM. Google’s ChromeOS device-support guidance for Android apps explains that native C and C++ components depend on available application binary interfaces (ABIs). An app shipped only with an arm64 build may be unavailable on many x86 Chromebooks. When ARM translation is used on an x86 device, Google warns that performance can be slower and battery use higher.

For developers, Google’s guidance says, “For the best user experience, provide x86 builds.” That is an app-packaging recommendation, not a promise that every x86 Chromebook will run every app well. Check the Play listing and test the particular workload on the particular Chromebook.

Native code matters most for games, media tools, browsers with specialized engines, encryption libraries, hardware interfaces and other performance-sensitive software. A simple app may work acceptably through translation, while a processor-intensive app can show slower startup, reduced frame rate or greater battery drain.

External input does not guarantee a desktop interface

ChromeOS can expose a keyboard, trackpad, mouse or stylus to Android apps, but the app still determines how those inputs behave. The same adaptive-app guidance used for tablets applies here: platform capability is not a guarantee of a polished large-screen interface. Use the app’s current listing, screenshots and a real task test before treating a Chromebook as a dependable replacement.

A reliability checklist for any purchase

Use this checklist after narrowing the category. It prevents a familiar operating-system label from hiding an app-specific failure.

  1. Define “reliable.” Decide whether you need local execution, offline access, camera or sensor use, background notifications, printing, keyboard shortcuts, stylus input or a specific security method.
  2. Record exact models. Keep the full model number, processor, memory, storage, Android or ChromeOS version and country of purchase. Compatibility pages often distinguish variants.
  3. Check each must-have app in the relevant store. For Android tablets and Chromebooks, use Google Play’s device filter. For Phone Link, check Microsoft’s supported-device table and whether the app appears in the Apps feature.
  4. Check architecture-sensitive apps. Look for x86, arm64 or other ABI notes where the developer provides them. Treat “installs” and “runs acceptably” as separate questions.
  5. Test your complete workflow. Include sign-in, two-factor authentication, file import and export, cloud synchronization, peripherals, printing, landscape mode, external keyboard use and offline recovery.
  6. Plan updates and recovery. Confirm that the device receives security updates for the period you need, that app updates are available in your region and that you can reset or replace the device without losing required data.

Common failure scenarios and fixes

“The app is missing from Google Play.”

Recheck the exact device selection, country, Android version and account. If the developer marks the app incompatible, contact the developer rather than assuming a different launcher or keyboard will fix it. A supported web version or another device category may be the only dependable alternative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“It installs, but the tablet layout is poor.”

Try the latest app release, portrait and landscape orientations, display-size settings and an external pointer. If controls remain clipped or touch-only, the app is not providing a reliable large-screen experience; choose a better-supported app or use the phone version for that task.

“Phone Link has no Apps option.”

Check the Windows build, Phone Link version, Android companion software, account permissions, network connection, market and handset model against Microsoft’s support pages. If the device is outside the supported list, replacing the laptop alone will not add the feature.

“A mirrored app opens and then disconnects.”

Keep the Android device powered and connected, remove battery restrictions that suspend the companion service, confirm permissions and test on a stable network. Because execution remains on the phone, troubleshoot the phone and link as well as Windows.

“A Chromebook shows the Play Store but the app is unavailable.”

Check the Chromebook’s exact entry in the Chromium Projects support list, then review architecture and ABI requirements in the developer guidance. The presence of Play Store access does not override an arm64-only package, an unsupported device or an app’s own screen-size restrictions.

Security and data boundaries

ChromeOS uses a separated Android container model rather than making Android code part of the Chrome browser process. The UK National Cyber Security Centre describes ChromeOS’s Android container and file-system separation in its ChromeOS device-security guidance. Separation can reduce the impact of a problem crossing from an app environment into the host, but it does not remove the need to update ChromeOS, Android components and applications or to review permissions.

On a tablet, Android apps and their data remain on the Android operating system. With Phone Link, the app’s data and execution remain on the linked phone or tablet while Windows displays and controls the session. These boundaries matter when deciding where company data, authentication tokens, downloads and backups should reside.

Decision guide

Choose an Android tablet when

  • Android apps must run locally without a second device.
  • Your essential apps appear as compatible for the exact model in Google Play.
  • You can accept a touch-first operating system and add a keyboard case when needed.

Choose Windows with Phone Link when

  • You need Windows desktop software as the primary environment.
  • You already own, or will buy, a phone or tablet on Microsoft’s supported list.
  • The apps you need work acceptably with mirroring, and dependence on the connected device is acceptable.

Choose another Chromebook when

  • You want ChromeOS features and are willing to verify Android support for the exact hardware.
  • Your apps are available for the Chromebook’s architecture and perform well in a hands-on workflow test.

Do not choose ChromeOS Flex for Android apps

Flex is appropriate only when your requirements are satisfied by web and supported Linux software. Google Play and Android apps are not supported on Flex, so it cannot meet a requirement for reliable local Android applications.
