If you have about $500 for gaming, you do not have to buy a full-price flagship console. The best alternative depends on where you play and what you value: Xbox Series S is the simplest living-room replacement, Steam Deck OLED is the strongest portable PC option, Nintendo Switch 2 is the choice for Nintendo exclusives and hybrid play, cloud gaming minimizes hardware spending when your internet is reliable, and an older or certified-refurbished system gives the lowest upfront cost.

Compare the game library, screen or TV use, ownership model, internet dependence, accessories, and a full year of subscriptions and games—not just the checkout price. Hardware prices, bundles, stock, cloud catalogs, and regional service support change, so verify those details before paying.

Start with the trade-off, not the hardware

A $500 budget can buy very different experiences. A local console or handheld runs games on its own processor and storage; cloud gaming streams a game rendered on a remote server; refurbished hardware trades newer performance for a lower entry price. None is universally best.

Path Best for Where you play Internet requirement Main compromise
Xbox Series S Simple TV gaming and Xbox services TV; remote play may be available Optional for installed games, needed for downloads and online features Less storage and graphics headroom than higher-end consoles
Steam Deck OLED Portable access to a Steam library Handheld; can connect to a display with the appropriate dock or adapter Optional after games are installed, except for online or update needs PC compatibility and settings vary by game
Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo exclusives and instant handheld/TV switching Handheld, tabletop, or TV Optional for most local play; required for downloads and online services Game prices, bundles, and regional availability change
Cloud gaming Playing on hardware you already own Supported PC, smart TV, phone, or tablet Essential; latency and reliability directly affect play Subscription dependence and no play when the connection fails
Older or refurbished hardware Lowest upfront cost and established game libraries Depends on the model Usually optional for installed or physical games Shorter remaining support life and variable condition

Use three questions to narrow the field:

  • Do you need a TV-first experience? Choose Series S for a current, straightforward console interface, or an older system if price matters more than current-generation performance.
  • Do you want to play away from the TV? Steam Deck OLED and Switch 2 are purpose-built handhelds; a Windows handheld offers broader PC storefront access but more setup.
  • Do you already own a capable screen and a strong internet connection? Cloud gaming can avoid buying equivalent local graphics hardware, but it is the least tolerant of network problems.

Cloud gaming: the lowest hardware bill, with the highest network dependence

Cloud gaming runs the game on a remote data center and sends an interactive video stream to your device. An existing PC, smart TV, phone, or tablet can therefore become a game screen without a console-class graphics processor. The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) describes this remote-access model in its analysis of cloud services.

What it costs

A 2022 USITC report, covering services reviewed for 2021, recorded subscription prices from $4.99 to $14.99 per month. Those figures are historical context rather than a current universal price list. Today’s tiers, game catalogs, supported countries, device limits, and free-trial terms vary by provider and can change. Treat a subscription as a recurring cost: twelve months at a listed monthly price can exceed the cost of a used console, even when the first month is inexpensive.

Connection requirements

Cloud play is sensitive to round-trip delay, packet loss, and consistency. In the same 2022 report, the USITC cited 20–30 milliseconds of latency as the technical condition for cloud games in its analysis. That is not a guarantee that every service or game needs exactly that figure; it is a historical reference point. A connection that is fast on a speed test can still feel poor if Wi-Fi interference causes spikes or dropped packets.

  • Use wired Ethernet when your TV, computer, or router supports it.
  • If you use Wi-Fi, prefer a modern 5 GHz or 6 GHz network close to the access point and avoid congested channels.
  • Test at the time you normally play, not only during a quiet afternoon.
  • Expect an interruption if connectivity is lost. A dropped stream can stop play and, depending on the game, lose unsaved progress.

Set up a cloud-gaming test before committing

  1. Confirm that your country, device, controller, and chosen game are supported by the service.
  2. Install the service app or open its supported browser experience on the device you plan to use.
  3. Pair a compatible Bluetooth or wired controller; touch controls are available only for games and services that implement them.
  4. Run a short session at your normal playing time. Check input delay, image stability, audio sync, and whether your household connection remains usable for other people.
  5. Try a second game with faster camera movement. A stream that feels fine in a turn-based title may feel delayed in a racing or competitive game.
  6. Only then calculate a one-year subscription total and compare it with buying local hardware.

When cloud gaming is a good alternative

It makes sense when you already own a suitable screen, move between devices, play games included in the catalog, and have dependable low-latency internet. It is also useful for occasional players who do not want another box under the TV. It is a poor fit when your connection is shared or unreliable, you travel without dependable service, you need offline play, or you expect to keep playing a particular title after it leaves a catalog.

Steam Deck OLED: a console-like portable PC

Valve positions Steam Deck as “Powerful, portable PC gaming, designed for comfort and a console-like user experience.” The OLED models combine integrated controls, a handheld shell, and a Steam front end, while retaining the flexibility—and complications—of a PC.

Key specifications

Specification Steam Deck OLED models
Storage options listed by Valve 512 GB and 1 TB
Display 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED
Refresh rate Up to 90 Hz
Wireless Wi-Fi 6E
Battery rating 50 Wh; Valve rates endurance at 3–12 hours depending on content
Controls Integrated controls designed for handheld play

The 3–12-hour figure is a rated range, not a promise for every game. A demanding 3D title can use more power than a lightweight 2D game, and screen brightness, frame rate, downloads, and wireless use affect runtime.

Why it is the closest handheld substitute for a console

  • The interface is designed to launch games from a couch or bed without a keyboard and mouse.
  • Your existing Steam purchases can be available on the handheld, subject to each game’s compatibility and licensing.
  • Sleep, resume, integrated controls, and a single library reduce the friction associated with a general-purpose laptop.
  • It can be connected to a larger display, but a dock or suitable adapter and any external controller are additional purchases.

The PC trade-offs to plan for

Steam is not a guarantee that every game behaves like a console release. Compatibility labels, anti-cheat systems, launchers, control schemes, shader compilation, and graphics settings differ by title. You may need to select a community control layout, lower resolution or detail, cap the frame rate, or troubleshoot a launcher. The benefit is storefront and configuration flexibility; the cost is that “works” is a per-game question rather than a single console-wide promise.

Before buying, list the five or ten games you actually intend to play and check their current compatibility information. Also budget for storage: a 512 GB drive can fill quickly with modern installations, while a 1 TB model delays that problem but does not eliminate it.

Nintendo Switch 2: choose the software and the hybrid format

Nintendo Switch 2 is the direct alternative when exclusive Nintendo software matters more than access to a broad PC library. Its defining feature is the ability to move between handheld and TV play rather than requiring a separate portable and living-room device.

What to evaluate

  • Exclusive library: Make a list of the Nintendo games you would otherwise miss; exclusives can outweigh differences in processor performance.
  • Play positions: Confirm whether the bundle includes the accessories you need for handheld, tabletop, and TV modes in your region.
  • Game cost: Hardware prices, game prices, bundles, regional MSRP, and stock change. Check a current retailer and Nintendo’s regional product information before treating any number as final.
  • Storage: Determine how much internal space remains after system data and whether your planned games require additional storage.
  • Online needs: Local single-player and many local multiplayer sessions can work offline, while downloads, patches, cloud saves, and online multiplayer require connectivity and, where applicable, a service subscription.

Switch 2 is the best fit for a buyer who wants Nintendo’s first-party catalog and a seamless handheld/TV transition. It is less suitable if your priority is PC storefront access, extensive graphics settings, or a subscription catalog that spans many publishers.

Xbox Series S: the straightforward TV replacement

Xbox Series S is the clearest conventional console alternative for a roughly $500 budget. It delivers a current Xbox living-room interface and access to Xbox services without requiring the higher-end model. Microsoft’s configuration, storage, bundles, and regional pricing change, so verify the current product listing before purchase.

Reasons to choose it

  • It is designed for a TV, with a controller-first setup and fewer compatibility decisions than a Windows handheld.
  • Xbox’s game catalog and subscription options can reduce the need to buy every game separately, depending on the titles you play and the current plan terms.
  • Installed games do not require continuous streaming, so a temporary internet problem does not automatically end a local session.

Costs and limitations to check

Do not compare only the console price. Check usable storage, the cost of an additional controller, the games you will buy, and any subscription you intend to keep for a year. Series S has less storage and graphics headroom than a higher-end console, so large installations may force you to uninstall and redownload games. It is also a digital-first purchase path; confirm how the games you want are sold and whether your existing physical collection is usable before switching.

Windows handhelds: broader compatibility, more PC maintenance

Windows handhelds in the ROG Ally class can access Windows storefronts, Xbox apps, and PC launchers that are not all available through a single console interface. They are useful when your priority is storefront choice or Windows compatibility rather than the simplest setup.

Compare the exact model, not the category name

Configurations differ in processor, memory, storage, display, battery, operating-system edition, and included power supply. Verify each specification and the current price for the exact model. Two devices with similar names can have materially different performance or battery behavior.

Expect a laptop-like ownership experience

  • Initial Windows updates, driver updates, sign-ins, launchers, and controller-mapping software take time.
  • Some games are designed around a keyboard, mouse, or desktop window; an on-screen keyboard or external accessories may be necessary.
  • Performance profiles trade battery life for frame rate, and fan noise can be more noticeable during demanding play.
  • Sleep and resume behavior, display scaling, and anti-cheat support can vary by game.

Choose this path when you are comfortable changing settings and want access to multiple PC ecosystems. If you want to press one button and play with minimal maintenance, Steam Deck’s console-style front end or a dedicated console is usually a better fit.

Older and refurbished hardware: the value option with a checklist

A last-generation console or handheld can provide a large established library at a lower upfront cost. It is the sensible choice when the games you want already run well on older hardware and you accept shorter remaining support life.

How much can you save?

A 2026 Tom’s Guide buying guide reports that official refurbished programs, open-box units, and certified-pre-owned stock can save roughly 15–30%. The actual discount depends on the seller, condition, included accessories, warranty, and timing; it is not a guaranteed reduction for every model.

Inspect these items before paying

  • Warranty and returns: Prefer a clearly stated return window and written warranty. A low price is not a bargain if a defect leaves you with no remedy.
  • Controller condition: Test every stick, trigger, button, vibration function, charging port, and wireless connection. Stick drift can erase the apparent savings.
  • Storage: Confirm the installed drive size and whether expansion cards or replacement drives are supported and affordable.
  • Compatibility: Check backward compatibility, current online-service status, required patches, and whether the games you want are still sold digitally or physically.
  • Accessories: Make sure the power supply, dock, stand, HDMI cable, and controller are included when you need them.
  • Parts and service: Search for readily available replacement controllers, batteries, drives, and repair options before choosing an obsolete model.
  • Account history: Buy hardware, not someone else’s account. The seller should reset the device so you can sign in with your own credentials.

Older hardware is strongest when you have a defined game list. Buying a cheap system first and discovering that a key title, accessory, or online feature is unavailable often costs more than choosing a newer alternative initially.

Calculate the one-year cost instead of comparing sticker prices

Use a twelve-month worksheet for each candidate. Include every cost you expect to incur, and mark one-time purchases separately from recurring charges.

Cost item Cloud gaming Local console or handheld Older/refurbished system
Hardware Existing device may be $0; otherwise include a supported screen or streaming device Console or handheld purchase Used, open-box, or certified-refurbished purchase
Games Included catalog, individual purchases, or both; verify licensing and catalog rotation Digital or physical games you will actually play Older games, used discs or cartridges, and any required patches
Subscription Monthly service cost multiplied by the months you will keep it Online multiplayer or catalog plan where required Online service if the platform still supports it
Accessories Compatible Bluetooth or Xbox controller, phone clip, or TV accessory Extra controller, dock, case, headset, or storage Replacement controller, power supply, storage, or adapter
Risk allowance Higher risk of unusable sessions during outages Potential storage expansion or replacement battery Repairs, missing parts, and shorter support life

For cloud gaming, multiply the currently advertised monthly price by the number of months you realistically expect to play, then add games not included in the catalog. For hardware, add the purchase price, your first-year games, and any subscription. Do not assign a value to “free” games you would never play; count only titles that replace purchases you would otherwise make.

Choose by scenario

You mostly play on a living-room TV

Start with Xbox Series S. It provides the least complicated current-console experience in this group. Consider older hardware instead if your preferred games are last-generation releases and the certified-refurbished price is substantially lower after adding a controller and storage.

  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

You want one device for bed, travel, and the sofa

Steam Deck OLED is the strongest general-purpose choice when your games are on Steam and you accept per-game compatibility checks. Choose Switch 2 when Nintendo’s exclusive library is the deciding factor and hybrid TV play is essential.

You already own a good phone, tablet, PC, or smart TV

Test cloud gaming first. If latency and reliability are excellent and the catalog contains your target games, a subscription can defer a hardware purchase. Keep a local option in mind if outages, travel, or catalog changes would disrupt your plans.

You want Windows storefronts and do not mind tinkering

Compare exact Windows handheld configurations. Favor adequate memory and storage, a comfortable control layout, and a return policy over a small peak-performance difference. Budget time for updates and configuration.

Your priority is the lowest possible upfront cost

Look for official refurbished, open-box, or certified-pre-owned stock, then apply the inspection checklist. A 15–30% reported discount is meaningful only when warranty coverage and included accessories are comparable.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Buying for the headline price: Add a controller, storage, dock, case, games, and twelve months of subscriptions before deciding.
  • Assuming every handheld is a console: Steam Deck and Windows devices run PC software. Check each important game’s controls, anti-cheat, launcher, and performance.
  • Ignoring network quality: Cloud gaming needs a stable low-latency path, not merely a high download number. Test during your normal play period.
  • Overlooking regional differences: Switch 2 bundles, game prices, cloud support, and Xbox plans vary by country and can change over time.
  • Buying an unverified used unit: Require a return policy, test the controller and storage, and confirm that the original accessories are present.
  • Counting a subscription as ownership: Catalog access can end when a plan is canceled or a game leaves the service. Buy a title locally when permanent access matters.

Bottom line

For a TV-first buyer, choose Xbox Series S unless an older library makes certified-refurbished hardware a better value. For portable PC gaming, Steam Deck OLED offers the most console-like experience, while Switch 2 wins when Nintendo exclusives and hybrid play come first. Cloud gaming is the cheapest way to start only when you already have a suitable device and a dependable low-latency connection. Windows handhelds suit people who value storefront breadth and accept PC maintenance. Compare the complete first-year cost and your actual game list; those two checks prevent most expensive mismatches.
