If the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition is unavailable, you have three sensible paths: keep checking for the themed console, buy a regular Switch 2 and add the official Zelda case, or choose the older Tears of the Kingdom OLED model if the design matters more than the newer hardware. The right choice depends on whether you value the collector console itself, Switch 2 features, or the lowest-risk way to get Zelda styling.
Stock is changing by region. Nintendo’s US Store search showed the anniversary console and matching controller sold out on October 13, 2026. Those results are a dated snapshot, not a live guarantee. The edition is announced for October 29, 2026, so check the retailer serving your country shortly before buying.
What the Zelda Switch 2 special edition actually is
Nintendo announced the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition for release on October 29, 2026. The Triforce-themed treatment appears on the Switch 2 console, its dock and both Joy-Con 2 controllers. It is a hardware design, not a software bundle.

Nintendo also announced two separate accessories for the same date: a Pro Controller with a display stand and a carrying case with a screen protector. Buying either accessory does not make a standard Switch 2 an anniversary console; the case adds Zelda styling while the console, dock and Joy-Con remain the standard design.

Regional model and announced Japanese prices
The Japanese anniversary model is a Japanese-language system intended for Japan. Do not assume an imported unit has the same language, account, warranty or regional suitability as a console sold in your market.

No game is listed as included with the console or these accessories. Local prices, taxes, bundles and stock can differ, so use the retailer in your region for the amount you will actually pay.

Alternative 1: keep checking for the exact anniversary console
Choose this route if the collector value is tied to the themed console, dock and Joy-Con rather than merely owning a Zelda accessory. A case cannot reproduce the Triforce treatment on the hardware, and buying a standard system now may leave you paying twice if you later decide the anniversary model is essential.
What the dated stock signals say
- Nintendo’s official US Store search showed the anniversary console and matching controller sold out on October 13, 2026.
- A GamesRadar+ report dated October 9 said select US Best Buy stores expected limited quantities during November 5 Ocarina of Time launch events. “Expected” is a retailer lead, not a reservation or a guarantee that every participating store will receive units.
- A September report said Nintendo Store UK and Ireland pages would announce replenishment through the Nintendo Store app. That identifies where notices may appear; it does not establish a replenishment date or quantity.
Because these signals are tied to specific dates and regions, do not treat them as a global restock schedule. A listing can sell out between checking and visiting a store.

A practical stock-check routine
- Identify the Nintendo Store or authorized retailers serving your country. Start with the regional Nintendo site rather than an imported Japanese listing.
- Search for the complete product name, not only “Zelda Switch 2.” Separate results for the console, Pro Controller and carrying case can have different availability.
- For the UK and Ireland, install or open the Nintendo Store app and enable its notifications if available. Nintendo notices, rather than an old article, are the relevant signal for a replenishment announcement.
- For the United States, check the retailer’s product page and contact the specific store before traveling to a reported event. A November 5 event reference does not prove that stock remains when you arrive.
- Confirm the model’s language, region, warranty and return terms at checkout. This is especially important when a marketplace listing uses a Japanese product photo for a different regional unit.
- Save the retailer’s cancellation and return policy. If a duplicate order is placed during a fast-moving drop, you need to know whether an unopened unit can be returned.
When waiting is rational
Wait when the anniversary hardware itself is the non-negotiable feature, you already own a usable console, or you can monitor local channels without paying an inflated resale price. Waiting is less attractive when you need a console for a specific game or gift date and have no confirmed allocation. No verified resale-price comparison is established here, so do not assume a higher secondary-market price represents fair value.
Alternative 2: standard Switch 2 with the Zelda 40th Anniversary case
This is the best compromise for most buyers who want the current platform and a visible Zelda connection. You get the Switch 2 system, dock and Joy-Con 2 in the regular design, then add Nintendo’s matching carrying case and screen protector when that accessory is available in your region.

How to buy without creating a mismatched setup
- Choose a standard Switch 2 sold for your country and confirm the seller’s return policy.
- Check the product description for the exact anniversary carrying case and screen protector, including whether both pieces are in one package.
- Confirm that the case is designed for Switch 2, not the original Switch or Switch OLED. A model-specific fit matters around the larger system and updated controls.
- Decide whether you need the screen protector immediately. If you do, buy the announced set rather than assuming a third-party protector has the same fit.
- Keep the console receipt and the accessory receipt separately. Their warranties and return windows may differ.
The Japanese announced price of 3,980 yen including tax is useful only as a reference for that Japanese product and market. It should not be converted into a promised US, UK, European or other local price.
Alternative 3: the Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch
Choose the Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch when the Zelda appearance matters more than owning the latest generation. Nintendo’s 2023 investor presentation describes the Zelda-themed OLED edition as hardware for first-time buyers and for people seeking an additional or replacement console. Nintendo released it on April 29, 2023.
This is an original Nintendo Switch OLED, not a Switch 2. Its Zelda design is on the console and dock, so it provides a stronger visual match than a standard Switch 2 in a case. The trade-off is platform age: you are buying the previous generation and should compare the games you intend to play before committing.

Questions to answer before buying one
- Does every game you care about run on the original Switch, or do you specifically need a Switch 2 version or feature?
- Is the listing for a new unit, an open-box unit or a used console? Condition affects the screen, analog sticks, battery, dock and included Joy-Con.
- Does the seller include the original dock, power adapter, Joy-Con, Joy-Con grip and wrist straps? Do not infer the contents from promotional photos.
- Is the console from your region, and does the seller provide a usable warranty or return period?
- Does the listing explicitly include a game? The Tears of the Kingdom design does not by itself prove that a game is bundled.
Used-unit inspection checklist
- Ask for a photo of the console’s system information and serial label, with personal account details hidden.
- Check the OLED screen for scratches, bright or dead pixels and uneven color.
- Test both Joy-Con for drift, wireless pairing and charging while attached.
- Verify that the dock outputs video and that the power adapter is the correct Nintendo unit or an approved equivalent.
- Confirm that the console can connect to the internet and complete a system update without an account left on it.
- Use a written return window long enough to test handheld play, TV output, game-card reading and microSD storage.
A lower purchase price can be offset by replacing a worn controller, dock or charger. Compare the complete working package with the cost of a standard Switch 2 before deciding that the OLED model is the bargain option.

If your priority is the newer platform, standard Switch 2 is the straightforward answer. It avoids waiting for a limited design and avoids paying for a themed accessory you may not value. The compromise is purely cosmetic: there is no anniversary artwork on the system.
Do not quote a universal price for a standard Switch 2. Nintendo pricing, tax and bundles depend on the market and publication date. Check the local product page and confirm whether the box contains only the console hardware or a retailer-specific game bundle.
Standard Switch 2 is also the safer choice when you already own digital Switch purchases or physical Switch games, provided the games are among Nintendo’s compatible titles. Compatibility is not universal, so check the individual game’s support information before selling an original Switch or buying a Switch 2 solely for a particular title.
Compatibility details that affect every alternative
Original Switch games
Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Some games may not be supported or may not be fully compatible. “Backward compatible” should therefore be read as a title-by-title qualification, not a promise that every original Switch game behaves identically.

Original Joy-Con
Original Switch Joy-Con can pair with Switch 2 wirelessly, but they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. This can be useful for multiplayer or for using an existing controller, but it does not turn old Joy-Con into physically compatible Switch 2 side controllers.
Original dock
The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. If you choose a standard Switch 2 or the anniversary edition, plan to use the dock supplied with that system rather than carrying over the dock from an older console.
Storage cards
Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards for game storage, not conventional microSD cards. If you are moving from an original Switch OLED, check the storage specification before reusing an existing card; a familiar card may not meet the new system’s requirement.
Imported Japanese hardware
The Japanese anniversary model is explicitly Japanese-language and Japan-only. Imported hardware can also involve different warranty service, power and account expectations. Unless you specifically need the Japanese configuration and understand those trade-offs, a locally sold standard Switch 2 is the lower-risk purchase.

Keep checking for the exact anniversary console. The design is the product, and neither a case nor the older OLED reproduces the same combination of console, dock and Joy-Con 2 artwork. Set a firm maximum price and verify the regional model before paying a reseller.

The current-generation player
Buy a standard Switch 2, then add the official case if its Zelda styling is important. You receive the newer platform immediately when local stock is available and avoid depending on a limited console allocation.
The Zelda-design-first buyer
Compare a Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch with a standard Switch 2 in a case. The OLED model delivers Zelda hardware styling, while the case route gives you the newer generation. The deciding question is whether your planned games require Switch 2 compatibility or whether the original Switch library is sufficient.
The gift buyer with a deadline
Choose an in-stock, regionally supported console rather than promising a sold-out edition. A standard Switch 2 is the safer gift when the recipient wants the current system; add the case only after confirming its availability. If the recipient mainly wants Zelda artwork and accepts previous-generation hardware, a verified new or carefully inspected used Tears of the Kingdom OLED may fit better.

The buyer reusing existing accessories
Budget for the correct accessories. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly but cannot attach, the original dock cannot be reused, and Switch 2 storage uses microSD Express. These constraints can erase the apparent savings of buying only the console.

- Confirm the exact model: anniversary Switch 2, standard Switch 2, or Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch.
- Confirm the generation: the OLED model is original Switch hardware; the other two are Switch 2 systems.

Bottom line: the best substitute depends on what you are replacing
If you are replacing the themed hardware itself, keep monitoring authorized local retailers and Nintendo’s regional channels. If you are replacing the ability to play on the newest platform, buy a standard Switch 2 and treat the Zelda case as an optional style upgrade. If you are replacing the look at the lowest generation cost, consider a verified Tears of the Kingdom OLED, while accepting that it is a previous-generation console. In every case, verify the regional model, included items, compatibility and live stock immediately before purchase.
