For most PC games, start with Standard mode and set brightness for your room. Choose Creator mode with the sRGB gamut when desktop and game colors must track the sRGB standard, or Custom Color when you need RGB gain and bias controls. For HDR10, use HDR Peak 1000 Bright and calibrate HDR in the operating system and each game rather than reusing SDR brightness values. On PS5 or Xbox Series consoles, use an HDMI 2.1 input, enable Console Mode, select 4K at 120 Hz where available, and run the console and in-game HDR calibration screens.
The AW3226Q does not have one universally perfect preset: its modes deliberately trade grayscale adjustment, gamma selection, gamut control, saturation and HDR impact. The settings below explain which compromise fits each use.
What the AW3226Q offers
The Alienware AW3226Q is a 32-inch 3840×2160 OLED gaming monitor. Dell Technologies lists a 165 Hz refresh rate, RGB-stripe tandem OLED panel, Dolby Vision, VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification, 99% DCI-P3 coverage, Delta E below 2, and compatibility with G-SYNC Compatible, FreeSync Premium Pro and VESA AdaptiveSync. Those specifications describe the panel’s capability; the best visible result still depends on the picture mode, source, game and calibration.

Choose a mode before changing individual controls
Picture modes are the main decision on this monitor. A mode can expose a control while another mode removes it, so switching modes after calibration can invalidate the adjustments you just made.
| Your priority | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Fast, uncomplicated SDR gaming | Standard | Tom’s Hardware found Standard color and grayscale accurate without visible errors. Its average gamma measured 2.02 against a 2.2 reference, so midtones appear somewhat lighter than a strict 2.2 presentation. |
| Manual white-balance control | Custom Color | Provides two-point RGB gain and bias controls. It does not provide a practical gamma adjustment. |
| sRGB-accurate desktop work and games | Creator, sRGB gamut | Provides sRGB gamut and gamma presets, but gives up Custom Color’s grayscale controls. |
| Maximum HDR highlight impact | HDR Peak 1000 Bright | Tom’s Hardware measured this as the brightest and most impactful HDR mode in its testing. |
| More vivid HDR presentation | Game HDR | Expert Reviews found it more vibrant, but not strictly accurate. |
Recommended PC SDR settings
Option 1: Standard mode for a reliable baseline
Select Standard mode, then adjust only brightness until white areas are comfortable in the room where you play. This is the least complicated starting point because Tom’s Hardware found its color and grayscale accurate without visible errors. The measured average gamma of 2.02 is lighter than the 2.2 reference, so shadows and midtones can look a little lifted. That is a characteristic of the mode, not a fault that the normal brightness slider can correct.
Use Standard when you want to play rather than tune. Make separate brightness changes for a dark room and a bright room instead of chasing a universal percentage; the correct level depends on ambient light and viewing distance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOption 2: Custom Color when white balance matters
Custom Color is the useful choice when you want to adjust the red, green and blue balance yourself. Tom’s Hardware’s measured starting point is shown below. The brightness values are approximate luminance targets from its testing, so use them as a starting reference and fine-tune for your room.
| Control | Starting value | Measured or intended result |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | 84 | Approximately 200 nits |
| Brightness | 47 | Approximately 120 nits |
| Brightness | 38 | Approximately 100 nits |
| Brightness | 28 | Approximately 80 nits |
| Brightness | 13 | Approximately 50 nits |
| Contrast | 75 | Tom’s Hardware’s measured starting point |
| User gain | Red 99, Green 98, Blue 97 | Two-point gain adjustment |
| Bias | Red 50, Green 50, Blue 50 | Two-point bias adjustment |
Tom’s Hardware noted a roughly 24-nit minimum at the low end. Do not interpret the percentages as a promise that every AW3226Q produces exactly the same luminance: OLED output varies with test pattern, firmware, temperature and panel sample.

Custom Color’s limitation is important. It gives you RGB gain and bias, but no practical gamma control. If the light 2.02 average gamma bothers you, moving the brightness slider or changing RGB values will not turn the mode into a true 2.2 presentation.
Option 3: Creator mode for sRGB-managed use
Choose Creator mode and select the sRGB gamut when you use an sRGB desktop, web content or games whose colors look oversaturated in a wide-gamut mode. Creator also offers gamma presets, which addresses the type of tonal-control limitation found in Custom Color. The trade-off is that Creator removes the Custom Color grayscale controls, so you cannot keep the Custom Color gain and bias adjustments at the same time.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Creator’s DCI-P3 option only when you intentionally want a wider-gamut workflow or content mastered for that gamut. Wide gamut can look more vivid in ordinary sRGB applications because those applications may not fully manage color.
How to set up SDR without losing track of changes
- Set the PC to 3840×2160 and select the highest refresh rate the graphics card and cable can sustain.
- Open the AW3226Q picture-mode menu and select Standard, Custom Color or Creator before changing sliders.
- Set brightness for the room. If you are targeting one of Tom’s measured Custom Color levels, start with the corresponding value in the table.
- For Custom Color, enter the listed contrast, gain and bias values, then check a neutral desktop background and grayscale test image.
- For Creator, select sRGB for standard desktop and game content, or DCI-P3 for a deliberate wide-gamut workflow; choose the gamma preset that best matches your target.
- Check a representative game after the desktop. A game can apply its own gamma or brightness calibration, so do not judge the monitor only from a Windows desktop.
HDR10 settings for PC gaming
Use HDR Peak 1000 Bright for small, bright highlights
For HDR10 games, select HDR Peak 1000 Bright when you want the strongest highlight impact. Tom’s Hardware measured 402 nits on a 25% test window in this mode and described it as the brightest, most impactful option in its testing. The manufacturer’s 1000-nit peak claim applies to a small 3% window, so it should not be read as sustained full-screen brightness. Tom’s EOTF measurement started slightly dark, lifted the midtones and moved smoothly into tone mapping.
That behavior favors specular highlights such as bright lights, reflections and explosions while preserving a controlled roll-off near the panel’s limit. It does not mean every scene will be 1000 nits, nor that the same result appears on every test pattern.

Calibrate HDR at the source, not with SDR numbers
- Enable HDR in the operating system’s display settings.
- Enable HDR in the game itself. Some games have a separate HDR toggle even when the operating system is already in HDR mode.
- Open the operating system’s HDR calibration tool if available and follow its black-level, peak-brightness and paper-white screens.
- Run the game’s own HDR calibration screens after the operating-system step. Save the game’s profile rather than assuming one set of values fits every title.
- Leave SDR brightness values behind. The Custom Color values such as brightness 84 for approximately 200 nits describe SDR testing and should not be copied into an HDR calibration screen.
When Game HDR is the better personal choice
Game HDR can look more saturated and immediately impressive. Expert Reviews found it more vibrant but not strictly accurate, so use it when you prefer that presentation and are willing to trade reference accuracy. If skin tones, neutral grays or game art look exaggerated, return to the more neutral HDR mode and recalibrate the game.

Connection and monitor settings
- Connect the console to one of the AW3226Q’s two HDMI 2.1 inputs.
- Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable. An older or uncertified cable can prevent the desired 4K and 120 Hz combination even when the console and monitor support it.
- Open the monitor’s input or gaming controls and enable Console Mode.
- On a PS5, Xbox Series X|S or another modern console that supports the mode, select 4K output and 120 Hz where available. Set HDR to activate when supported rather than forcing it for every SDR title.
- Run the console’s HDR calibration screens from its display settings.
- Open each game’s video settings and complete its own HDR calibration. Game-specific paper-white and peak sliders can differ substantially.
Expert Reviews reports that both HDMI 2.1 inputs support Console Mode for source-based HDR tone mapping. Tom’s Hardware also confirms that the AW3226Q’s gamma control in Console Mode works over HDMI, giving console users an adjustment that is not limited to the PC DisplayPort path.
Choosing a console HDR look
Start with the neutral HDR presentation after calibration. If a title appears too vivid, reduce the game’s saturation or use the monitor’s less aggressive HDR option rather than raising brightness blindly. Game HDR remains available as a taste choice, but its extra vibrancy is not the same as greater accuracy.
Dolby Vision for console and media playback
The AW3226Q supports Dolby Vision. Expert Reviews specifically reports enjoyable Dolby Vision playback from an Xbox or a PC running Netflix. Treat this as a useful feature for supported movies and shows in a living-room or media-center setup; do not force Dolby Vision for every game when the title is authored for HDR10.
Understanding the key trade-offs
| Decision | Choice A | Choice B | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color accuracy versus saturation | Creator sRGB | Standard or a wide-gamut mode | sRGB is safer for standard-managed content; wide gamut can look more vivid but may oversaturate unmanaged content. |
| Grayscale control versus gamma control | Custom Color | Creator | Custom Color exposes RGB gain and bias; Creator exposes gamut and gamma choices. You cannot keep all of those controls in one mode. |
| HDR impact versus strict accuracy | HDR Peak 1000 Bright | Game HDR | Peak 1000 Bright prioritizes small highlights; Game HDR favors a more vibrant look and is less strictly accurate. |
| PC versus console connection | DisplayPort 1.4 | HDMI 2.1 with Console Mode | DisplayPort is the normal desktop path; HDMI 2.1 and Console Mode are the relevant console path. |
| Refresh rate versus rendering load | 165 Hz capability | Lower achieved frame rate | The panel can refresh at 165 Hz, but 4K rendering may keep many mid-range systems below 165 frames per second in demanding games. |
Refresh rate, VRR and performance expectations
Set 165 Hz in the PC display control panel when your connection and GPU offer it. Then enable the adaptive-sync technology appropriate to your graphics card. G-SYNC Compatible, FreeSync Premium Pro and VESA AdaptiveSync support helps the monitor follow changing frame rates, but it does not create additional frames.

At 3840×2160, rendering load is high. Expert Reviews notes that many mid-range systems will not hold 165 frames per second in demanding 4K games. A lower but stable frame rate with adaptive sync is preferable to repeatedly dropping frames while chasing the panel’s maximum refresh number. Reduce demanding game settings, use an appropriate upscaling mode offered by the game, or select a lower refresh target when the GPU cannot sustain 165 frames per second.

The SDR image looks too light
Tom’s Hardware measured average gamma at 2.02 in Standard mode versus a 2.2 reference. If that lighter midtone presentation is distracting, try Creator mode and its gamma presets. You will give up Custom Color’s RGB gain and bias controls, so decide whether tonal tracking or manual grayscale adjustment is more important.
Colors look oversaturated on the desktop
Select Creator mode with the sRGB gamut for ordinary sRGB desktop and game content. A wide-gamut mode can be intentional for DCI-P3 material, but it is not the safest default for unmanaged applications.
HDR looks dim or highlights lack impact
Confirm that HDR is enabled in both the operating system and the game, then select HDR Peak 1000 Bright and repeat the game’s HDR calibration. Do not adjust HDR using the SDR brightness table. Remember that the highest peak is measured on a small window, so a full-screen white scene will not match a small highlight.

HDR looks colorful but wrong
Game HDR is designed as a more vibrant taste option. Switch to the neutral HDR mode, rerun the operating-system and in-game calibration screens, and compare neutral grays, skin tones and a familiar scene.

4K at 120 Hz is unavailable on a console
- Verify that the console is connected to an HDMI 2.1 input rather than another display output.
- Replace the cable with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable.
- Enable Console Mode on the monitor.
- Check the console’s video-information screen and select 4K and 120 Hz where the console and title support them.
- Disable forced HDR for SDR titles if the console’s automatic mode is producing an unexpected signal.
The PC cannot reach 165 Hz in games
First confirm that 165 Hz is selected in the operating system and that the DisplayPort connection is being used as intended. If the setting is available but frame rate remains lower, the limitation is likely game rendering load: 4K scenes can exceed the capacity of a mid-range GPU. Use adaptive sync and tune game settings for a stable frame rate instead of treating 165 Hz as a guaranteed in-game result.
Optional measurement and calibration
The published Custom Color values are a practical starting point, not a replacement for measuring your own panel. A colorimeter and calibration software can verify white balance, luminance and gamma for a particular unit and room. If you calibrate with a meter, save the monitor’s mode first, record the original values, and keep separate profiles for SDR and HDR. Do not apply an SDR ICC profile or SDR brightness target to an HDR game.
For most players, the simplest accurate workflow remains Standard mode for SDR, HDR Peak 1000 Bright for HDR10, and Console Mode over HDMI 2.1 for a console. Move to Creator or Custom Color only when you can identify the specific control or gamut behavior you need.
The Bottom Line
Use Standard for straightforward SDR, Custom Color when RGB adjustment matters, and Creator sRGB when gamut and gamma control matter more. Use HDR Peak 1000 Bright for impactful HDR10, calibrate HDR separately from SDR, and connect consoles through HDMI 2.1 with Console Mode enabled. The AW3226Q’s best setting is therefore a deliberate choice between accuracy, control, saturation and highlight impact rather than one universal preset.
