For the most legroom, choose an aircraft-specific exit-row or extra-legroom seat. Southwest says its Extra Legroom seats, located at the front of the cabin and in exit rows, provide up to five additional inches compared with Standard seats (Southwest Airlines, 2025). Qatar also places Extra Legroom seats in exit rows and at bulkheads. For the fastest practical exit, select a seat beside the actual usable passenger door shown on the aircraft map—not simply a particular row number. To reduce the number of people beside you, find a two-seat side on a 2-2 or 2-3 layout. Every choice has trade-offs involving safety eligibility, storage, recline, traffic, fees and aircraft-change risk.

Quick picks by priority

Your priority Best starting point What to verify before paying
Maximum economy legroom Extra-legroom or exit-row seat on the booked aircraft Emergency-seat eligibility, fee, armrest equipment and under-seat-storage restrictions
Space without emergency duties Bulkhead seat Wall position, tray-table and screen location, bassinet use, storage and recline
Getting off sooner Seat nearest the usable passenger door on the detailed map Whether that door is used for passenger deplaning, plus galley and lavatory queues
Fewer seatmates Window or aisle on a visible two-seat side of a 2-2 or 2-3 aircraft Aircraft substitution, unusual-row limitations and whether the map changes after booking

The seat map for the operating aircraft controls. A booking page can display a marketing seat category, while the actual cabin geometry, doors and restrictions depend on the aircraft assigned to your flight.

Which airplane seat has the most legroom?

Exit-row seats

Exit rows are usually the strongest economy option for legroom because the space needed for an emergency exit creates a wider pitch in front of the row. They are intended for passengers who can understand the crew’s instructions, reach and operate the exit, and assist other passengers if required. EASA states that a row leading to an exit cannot be left empty during taxi, takeoff and landing, and airlines may apply additional restrictions. U.S. Department of Transportation guidance likewise notes that FAA or foreign-government safety rules can restrict who may sit in an exit row.

Airlines can move you if you do not meet the applicable requirements. Qatar warns that an emergency seat may be reassigned when the passenger does not satisfy its conditions. Treat an exit-row purchase as conditional on eligibility, not as a guaranteed seat assignment.

  • Legroom: commonly the largest economy premium, but the exact distance is aircraft-specific and is not stated uniformly across airlines.
  • Emergency responsibilities: you must be able and willing to perform the required functions and follow crew instructions.
  • Storage: bags may not remain under the seat or in the exit area during taxi, takeoff and landing.
  • Seat hardware: tray tables or entertainment equipment can be built into the armrests, making them immovable and sometimes reducing usable seat width.
  • Recline: the row immediately in front of an exit may have restricted recline; the exit row itself can also have a fixed or limited recline depending on the aircraft.
  • Cost: an airline may charge for the seat; no universal amount is published.

Branded extra-legroom seats

Extra-legroom categories are often easier to identify than individual exit rows. Southwest describes its Extra Legroom seat as a roomier seat at the front of the cabin or in an exit row, with up to five additional inches compared with Standard seats (Southwest Airlines, 2025). “Up to” is important: the maximum is a published comparison for that airline’s category, not a promise that every aircraft or every seat supplies five inches.

Qatar similarly places Extra Legroom seats in exit rows and at bulkheads. Read the seat notes because an extra-legroom label may include several physical designs. One may be an emergency row with eligibility rules; another may be a bulkhead with different storage and armrest arrangements.

Bulkhead seats

A bulkhead puts a wall, curtain or divider directly ahead of you instead of another seatback. That can provide open knee space and prevents a person in front from reclining into your area. It is also useful for some passengers with disabilities and for travelers who need a service animal at an appropriate bulkhead location.

The open space is not the same as unrestricted personal space. The wall can contain a tray table, screen or safety equipment. Armrests may be fixed, and your bag generally must be stored overhead for takeoff and landing because there is no seat in front of you. Bassinet positions, when offered, are aircraft- and airline-specific and can bring infant-related activity nearby.

DOT’s seating-accommodation guidance says an airline must provide a bulkhead or another same-class seat when requested by an individual with a fused or immobilized leg who needs greater legroom and/or an aisle seat, subject to the applicable rules. This accommodation does not require the airline to provide a higher class of service or a second ticket, and it does not guarantee a particular seat number.

Is the bulkhead better than the emergency exit row?

Neither is universally better. Use the bulkhead when you want legroom without emergency duties, need a disability-related accommodation, or prefer to stop a forward seat from reclining. Choose an exit row when the aircraft map shows materially more space and you can satisfy the safety rules.

Factor Exit row Bulkhead
Legroom Often the largest economy increase; exact amount varies by aircraft Open space ahead, with dimensions determined by the wall and cabin design
Eligibility Safety rules apply; passenger can be reassigned Usually no emergency-row qualification, but airline and accommodation rules still apply
Under-seat storage Restricted around the exit during taxi, takeoff and landing Usually no personal item at your feet during those phases because there is no seat ahead
Seat width Armrests may contain tray tables or entertainment hardware Armrests and wall fixtures can limit movement; exact width is not stated
Recline May be limited by the row arrangement No seat directly ahead can recline into you, but your own recline may be limited
Nearby activity Can be near an exit door, galley or lavatory Often near a galley, lavatory or bassinet position; map notes determine the risk
Fee May carry a paid-seat charge May carry a paid-seat charge; fare and location rules differ

Which seat gets you off the plane fastest?

Choose the seat closest to the usable passenger door shown on the detailed seat map. Do not assume that “row 1,” “front of cabin” or an exit-row label identifies the quickest route. A door can be dedicated to crew operations, blocked from passenger use, or reached through a galley or lavatory area. Passenger flow and the airline’s door-use procedure determine what happens after the aircraft reaches the gate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to read the map for an exit

  1. Open the aircraft-specific seat map rather than a generic cabin diagram.
  2. Locate every door symbol and distinguish doors from over-wing exits and other emergency markings.
  3. Identify which door is adjacent to passenger seating and likely to be opened for deplaning at your destination.
  4. Compare seats immediately behind or ahead of that door with seats beside galleys and lavatories.
  5. If you value a quiet wait, avoid a row directly behind a galley or lavatory; those areas can attract queues, carts and conversation even when they are near the preferred door.

Door proximity helps only after the aircraft is at the gate and that door is used. A forward seat can still wait while passengers in another section leave first, and a rear door can be faster when the airport uses stairs or a second jet bridge. No seat guarantees a particular deplaning order.

Recheck after an aircraft change

Aircraft substitutions can move doors, exits and row numbers. Reopen the map at online check-in and after any aircraft-change notice. A seat that was beside a door on the original aircraft may become a middle-of-cabin seat, a bulkhead or a row beside a lavatory.

How can you avoid sitting next to two people?

Look for a two-seat side

On a 2-2 regional jet, each side has two seats, so a window or aisle passenger has at most one seatmate. On a 2-3 layout, the two-seat side offers the same advantage while the three-seat side retains a middle position. The aircraft-specific map is the only reliable way to identify which side has two seats.

Use a window or aisle on a 3-3 row

On a standard 3-3 layout, a window or aisle removes the middle-seat position but still leaves one adjacent traveler. A window seat limits movement but gives a wall to lean against; an aisle makes it easier to stand and may help a tall traveler change position. Neither eliminates the possibility of a seatmate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect unusual rows carefully

Tapering fuselages, exit areas and some last rows can create a row with fewer seats. Those positions may have no recline, limited overhead space, or immediate proximity to a lavatory. An apparently empty neighboring seat is a possibility, not a feature promised by the airline. A later aircraft change or seat reassignment can fill it.

Seat-layout strategies by aircraft geometry

Layout visible on map Best privacy tactic Common compromise
2-2 Choose either window or aisle; every seat has one possible neighbor Fewer seat pairs may be available, and row proximity to the galley can matter more
2-3 Target the two-seat side, especially a window for a quiet position The two-seat side may sell first or have different fare categories
3-3 Choose window or aisle to avoid the middle seat One adjacent passenger remains; aisle traffic can be noticeable
Unusual taper or final row Check whether the map shows a missing seat or extra side space Recline, storage, lavatory proximity or aircraft-change risk can be worse

How to choose a seat during booking

  1. Confirm the operating carrier and aircraft. The airline selling the ticket may not operate the flight. Delta notes that seat-selection availability varies by operating airline, so use the aircraft and operator shown in the itinerary.
  2. Open the detailed seat map. Mark exits, bulkheads, galleys, lavatories, bassinets and any row with an unusual seat count.
  3. Filter for the airline’s extra-legroom category. Compare the listed price with an exit-row or bulkhead alternative rather than assuming the branded category is physically identical throughout the cabin.
  4. Read every seat note. Check emergency eligibility, fixed armrests, tray-table or screen placement, storage restrictions, restricted recline and proximity to service areas.
  5. Match the choice to your priority. Select the largest usable legroom for height, the nearest practical door for deplaning, or the two-seat side for fewer neighbors. If priorities conflict, decide which inconvenience you can tolerate.
  6. Save the assignment and monitor it. Recheck at online check-in and after an aircraft-change message. Seat maps can be redrawn and paid assignments can be moved.

Fees, fare rules and seat-selection changes

Seat-selection charges depend on fare and location. WestJet states that its fees may vary by both the purchased fare and the seat’s position. Because no single fee applies across airlines, compare the amount shown for the exact flight instead of relying on a general price list.

A low-cost seat can become poor value if it is reassigned after a substitution or if its advertised feature does not fit your needs. Before payment, capture the seat designation and review the airline’s policy for changes, refunds or involuntary moves. Keep in mind that a paid seat category does not override safety rules: an exit-row passenger who no longer qualifies can be moved.

Family seating and disability accommodations

Traveling with a child

The DOT family-seating dashboard records airline commitments and conditions for placing a child age 13 or under next to an accompanying adult. Commitments differ by carrier and may depend on fare, seat availability or other conditions. Check the current carrier entry and make the request early; do not assume that a preferred extra-legroom or two-seat configuration will be available for every family member.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Passengers who need more space

DOT disability guidance covers accommodations such as greater legroom, a bulkhead or an adjoining seat for qualifying passengers. The airline may provide a same-class alternative rather than a specific row, and it is not required to upgrade the passenger or issue a second ticket solely to create space. Contact the carrier before travel, explain the functional need, and verify the arrangement again after any aircraft change.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing by row number alone: row 10 can be an exit on one aircraft and a standard row on another. Use the map symbols and aircraft type.
  • Assuming every exit seat is interchangeable: doors, over-wing exits, armrest equipment and recline restrictions differ.
  • Ignoring the space behind a seat: a row beside a galley or lavatory may have constant traffic, even when it is close to the exit.
  • Expecting a free middle seat: airlines do not promise an empty adjacent seat unless a specific product says so.
  • Forgetting takeoff storage rules: bulkhead and exit positions generally require personal items to be stowed overhead during critical phases.
  • Paying before checking eligibility: emergency-row restrictions can invalidate the selection and lead to reassignment.
  • Skipping the final map check: an aircraft swap can remove the legroom, door proximity or two-seat side that motivated the purchase.

Decision guide for real trips

If you are tall and can perform emergency duties

Start with an exit-row or extra-legroom seat. Compare the actual map, confirm the armrest and storage arrangement, and accept the possibility of a fee or reassignment if eligibility changes.

If you are tall but do not want emergency duties

Check bulkhead seats first, then the airline’s non-exit extra-legroom options. Verify that the wall position leaves enough knee room and that fixed armrests or a nearby bassinet do not create a different problem.

If you need to leave promptly after landing

Map the passenger doors, choose the nearest usable one, and avoid a seat directly behind a galley or lavatory when queues would slow you. Recheck the map during check-in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you value privacy over legroom

Find a two-seat side on a 2-2 or 2-3 aircraft. If none exists, take a window or aisle in a 3-3 row and treat any empty middle seat as luck rather than part of the product.

If you need an accommodation

Contact the operating airline before travel, describe the functional requirement, and request the appropriate same-class accommodation. Confirm the assignment after every schedule or aircraft change.

Bottom line

The best seat depends on the feature you can verify on the booked aircraft. Exit-row and extra-legroom seats lead for economy legroom, bulkheads provide open space without emergency-row duties, the nearest usable door offers the best chance of an early exit, and a two-seat side minimizes neighbors. Use the detailed map, read restrictions, compare the exact fee, and check again when the airline confirms the aircraft.
