For wildfire smoke in a bedroom, choose a portable air cleaner by its smoke CADR, not by marketing terms alone. A unit with a higher smoke CADR removes particle pollution faster, while a properly sized lower-capacity unit can still work if it runs continuously. Use a CARB-certified model when available to limit ozone emissions, and use ENERGY STAR data to compare efficiency and standardized performance.
The documented choices below cover a large-room option, a smaller-bedroom option, and a model that requires additional specification checking. If commercial equipment is unavailable, a box-fan filter can provide a measured alternative. No purifier removes every smoke pollutant, so closing outdoor-air pathways when safe and controlling indoor sources remain part of the plan.
What matters most when smoke enters a bedroom
Wildfire haze contains fine particles, including PM2.5, that can penetrate deep into the lungs. For a bedroom, the most useful buying specification is the unit’s smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR). CADR combines airflow and filtration performance: a higher number means more filtered air is delivered each minute.
ENERGY STAR explains that a higher CADR lets a cleaner filter room air more quickly and serve a larger area. Compare the smoke CADR shown in standardized listings before considering app controls, appearance or sensor features. Tobacco-smoke CADR is a useful proxy for PM2.5-sized particles because both tests address small airborne particles; it is not a measurement of every gas or odor in wildfire smoke.

For a bedroom during a smoke event, a practical priority order is:
- Smoke CADR sufficient for the room.
- Low-speed noise that you can tolerate while sleeping.
- CARB certification or other evidence that ozone emissions are controlled.
- Replacement-filter availability and ongoing cost.
- ENERGY STAR efficiency and clearly reported test data.
- Useful sensors, controls and scheduling features.
Do not rank a machine by the phrase “true HEPA” alone when comparable CADR data are available. A HEPA filter can capture PM2.5, but the room-cleaning rate also depends on how much air the machine moves through that filter.
How much smoke CADR does your bedroom need?
The EPA sizing rule
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends choosing a portable air cleaner with a smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet for wildfire smoke. This is a minimum target; a higher CADR cleans faster and gives you more capacity when doors open or smoke levels rise.

Example: a 12×12 bedroom
A 12-by-12-foot bedroom has 144 square feet of floor area. Two-thirds of 144 is 96, so choose a unit rated at at least 96 cfm smoke CADR. A model rated near 100 cfm meets the minimum target; a 200- to 350-cfm model will move substantially more filtered air and can clear particle spikes faster, although it may cost more, use more electricity or produce more noise at high speed.
Quick sizing table
| Bedroom floor area | Minimum smoke CADR (two-thirds rule) | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | About 67 cfm | Small bedroom or office |
| 144 sq ft (12×12) | 96 cfm | Typical small-to-medium bedroom |
| 200 sq ft | About 134 cfm | Choose the next higher published CADR if between sizes |
| 300 sq ft | 200 cfm | Large bedroom or bedroom with an open adjoining area |
Measure the space that actually shares air with the purifier. If the bedroom door stays open to a hall or attached room, use the combined area or close the door so the purifier can concentrate on the sleeping room. Ceiling height, air leakage and a connected bathroom can change real-world performance, so treat the calculation as a minimum rather than a guarantee.

It clears the minimum for a 12×12 room, but its smoke rating should be compared with your measured floor area rather than assumed to cover a larger open space.
LEVOIT LAP-C511S-WUS appears in ENERGY STAR’s Most Efficient room-air-cleaner directory, accessed in 2026. The listing available for this guide did not expose smoke CADR, PM2.5 CADR or price. Do not rank it for wildfire use until the exact U.S. listing supplies those values.
How to compare a purifier beyond the headline CADR
Smoke and PM2.5 ratings
Use smoke CADR as the primary wildfire-particle comparison. If a manufacturer reports a separate PM2.5 CADR, record that number too. Values can differ, as they do for the Airmega 100, so do not substitute a generic room-size claim for the actual test rating.
Noise at the speed you will use
Manufacturers often publish several sound levels or only a maximum value. The relevant question is whether the unit can maintain useful airflow on a quiet setting while you sleep. A very high CADR may be valuable during a smoke spike but unnecessary at night if the lowest setting is too loud. Check the current specification sheet or retailer listing for measured sound data; the supplied model records do not establish noise values.

CARB certification addresses ozone emissions from air-cleaning equipment. Check the exact model number in the California Air Resources Board directory rather than assuming every product in a series has the same status. Avoid devices that intentionally generate ozone; ozone is an irritant and is not a substitute for particle filtration.

Efficiency and standardized reporting
ENERGY STAR qualification addresses energy efficiency and provides standardized reporting that makes CADR comparisons more meaningful. It does not mean the unit removes every smoke chemical, nor does it replace checking the smoke CADR for your room.
Filters, sensors and controls
Particle filters load faster during prolonged smoke. Confirm that replacement filters are sold in the United States, that the filter part number matches the exact model and that you can obtain them before wildfire season. A particle sensor can show changing conditions and an automatic mode can adjust fan speed, but neither feature compensates for an undersized CADR. App connectivity is optional; a physical speed control is more important if your network is unavailable during an emergency.
Set up a cleaner-air bedroom
The purifier works best when it is part of a room strategy rather than an isolated appliance. EPA identifies a bedroom with an attached bathroom as a good choice for a cleaner-air room because it can be closed off from the rest of the home.
- Choose the room. Select the bedroom where occupants spend the most time. If possible, use one with an attached bathroom and a door that can be closed.
- Close outdoor-air pathways when safe. Shut windows and exterior doors during smoke intrusion. Turn off or limit ventilation systems that bring in unfiltered outdoor air, following your building’s safety requirements. Never compromise required combustion or life-safety ventilation.
- Place the purifier in open space. Keep the intake and exhaust clear of walls, curtains, bedding and furniture. Do not hide the unit behind a nightstand or push it into a corner.
- Start before the room becomes smoky. Run the unit before smoke enters when a wildfire alert is active. Early filtration reduces the particle load the machine must remove later.
- Use continuous operation during intrusion. Keep the purifier running while smoke is present, including overnight, at the quietest setting that still provides useful airflow. Increase the speed when outdoor smoke worsens or when the room has been opened.
- Keep the door position consistent. A closed door lets the purifier focus on the bedroom. If the door must remain open, account for the adjoining area when selecting CADR.
- Monitor the filter. Inspect the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Heavy smoke can darken or load it faster than ordinary household dust; replace it when the indicator activates, airflow falls noticeably or the specified service interval is reached.
Should you run the purifier all night?
Yes, continuous operation is appropriate during a smoke event when the unit is in good condition and placed with unobstructed airflow. Turning it off allows particles to accumulate again, especially in a leaky room or one connected to a smoky hallway. Use a lower speed for sleep if it still provides adequate airflow, and use a higher speed for a short period after opening the door, cooking or entering from outdoors.
Keep electrical cords and the purifier away from water, maintain the clearance stated in the manual and do not cover the intake or exhaust with clothing or bedding. If the unit overheats, smells electrically abnormal or shows damage, turn it off and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
What a HEPA purifier can and cannot remove
A properly functioning high-efficiency particle filter can remove PM2.5-sized particles from air that passes through it. The room result depends on CADR, operating time, filter condition and how much unfiltered air leaks in. Smoke also contains gases and vapors, including odor-causing compounds, that a particle filter may not remove completely.

- Air Quality Monitoring: This air purifier is designed with a built-in PM2.5 sensor and real-time display, eliminating the need for guesswork about air quality. In auto mode, when it detects a decline in air quality, the purifier with the indicator changing to green, blue, yellow or red, and the fan accelerating to purify the air more efficiently.
- Remarkable Filtration: Featuring an advanced filtration system, the air purifier effectively removes airborne particles (such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke ). When activated, this air cleaner can refresh the atmosphere in a space up to 2400 sq ft / 223 m² every 30 minutes, ensuring you enjoy a fresh and comfortable air quality throughout the day in your home or office. (Note: For significant amounts of pet hair on floors or fabric surfaces, we recommend use other cleaning products.)
- 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)
Some units include activated carbon or another gas-adsorbing layer. The amount and quality of that material vary widely, and the smoke CADR does not measure gas removal. Treat carbon as a supplemental feature, not a reason to accept a low particle CADR. Ventilation with clean outdoor air, when conditions improve, and eliminating indoor sources such as candles or frying can reduce pollutants that filtration alone cannot address.

Lower-cost fallback: a box-fan filter
When a commercial purifier is unavailable or unaffordable, EPA testing measured wildfire-smoke performance for several DIY configurations. A box fan with one 1-inch MERV-13 filter produced 111 ± 1 cfm; a 4-inch MERV-13 filter with a cardboard shroud produced 248 ± 15 cfm; and a four-filter Corsi-Rosenthal box produced 401 ± 31 cfm. These are EPA test results from 2021, not a guarantee for every fan, filter brand or room.
Basic assembly
- Use a stable box fan in good electrical condition and MERV-13 filters sized to the fan or frame.
- For a single-filter design, attach the filter to the intake side with the airflow arrow pointing toward the fan. Seal obvious gaps so air does not bypass the filter.
- For the 4-inch-filter design, add a cardboard shroud around the intake area as tested; keep the fan’s exhaust unobstructed.
- For a Corsi-Rosenthal box, join four MERV-13 filters so their filtered faces form a box, place the fan on top blowing upward and seal the perimeter. Follow the filter arrows and keep the assembly stable.
- Place the finished unit away from curtains and walls, check that the fan cannot tip and run it continuously during smoke intrusion.
Inspect filters frequently during wildfire conditions and replace them when loaded, damaged or no longer allowing useful airflow. A DIY unit lacks the enclosure, controls and safety certifications of a commercial cleaner, so use a fan with an intact guard, keep children away from moving blades and stop using it if the motor or wiring is unsafe.

The room still smells smoky
Check whether the odor is entering through an open window, bathroom fan, range hood, hallway or forced-air system. Close the source when safe, keep the bedroom door positioned as intended and verify that the purifier is not blocked. Particle CADR does not prove complete removal of gaseous odor compounds.
Airflow seems weak
Inspect the prefilter and main filter for heavy loading, confirm the filter is installed in the correct direction and make sure a plastic shipping wrapper was removed. A clogged filter can reduce delivered airflow even when the fan sounds normal.

The sensor reading stays high
Check for nearby sources such as cooking, candles, sprays or a smoky hallway. Sensor displays are useful for trends but are not a substitute for the smoke CADR calculation. Keep the purifier running and reduce the source of incoming particles where possible.
Costs, filters and availability
Current U.S. list prices and replacement-filter prices were not captured for this guide. Prices, stock and filter availability change, especially during wildfire season. Check the manufacturer’s current U.S. product page and a current retailer listing immediately before purchase. Include at least one replacement filter in your ownership budget and confirm that recurring filter costs are acceptable before choosing a high-capacity model.
Do not assume a sale price, a foreign-market specification or an older product page applies to the exact U.S. model. Verify the model number, smoke CADR, PM2.5 CADR, CARB status, noise data, warranty terms and filter part number at the time you buy.
Which option fits your situation?
Small, closed bedroom
Calculate two-thirds of the room area, then select a purifier whose smoke CADR meets or exceeds that number. The Coway Airmega 100’s documented 124 cfm smoke CADR suits many small bedrooms, including a 12×12 room, provided the door and adjoining area do not expand the volume being cleaned.
Large bedroom or frequent severe smoke
Favor additional capacity. The Blueair Pure 211’s documented 350 cfm smoke CADR can clean faster than a 100- to 125-cfm unit, which is useful when smoke levels change quickly or the room is larger. Confirm that its noise and filter cost fit your sleeping routine.
Unverified model listing
For the LEVOIT LAP-C511S-WUS, wait until the exact U.S. listing supplies smoke and PM2.5 CADR values. ENERGY STAR Most Efficient status is a positive efficiency signal, but it does not establish wildfire-suitable capacity by itself.
No commercial unit available
Build a correctly oriented MERV-13 box-fan system and use the EPA-tested CADR figures as a planning reference. Keep the assembly stable, maintain safe electrical clearance and replace loaded filters.
Bottom line
Size by smoke CADR first: for a 12×12 bedroom, target at least 96 cfm. Choose CARB-certified equipment to limit ozone, use ENERGY STAR data for efficiency and standardized comparisons, keep windows and doors closed when safe, and run the purifier continuously with unobstructed airflow during smoke intrusion. Among the documented models, the 350-cfm Blueair Pure 211 offers the most capacity, while the 124-cfm Coway Airmega 100 is better suited to a smaller room. Verify current U.S. pricing, noise and replacement-filter availability before ordering.
