For recurring characters and connected scenes, start with Runway, Luma Dream Machine with Ray3, Kling O3, and Google Veo 3.1. Luma Ray3 is the most explicit about single-image character continuity. Runway is the broadest professional benchmark because its catalogue brings several current models, reference images, multishot prompting, and editing-oriented controls together. Kling O3 is worth testing for motion-heavy or 4K work, while Veo 3.1 is the best fit when generated dialogue, ambience, or music is part of the brief.
No generator guarantees a perfect identity match. The practical choice depends on how well a model preserves the face, hair, clothing and proportions in your exact shots, whether it supports keyframes or video-to-video, how much camera direction you need, and what a usable shot costs after failed generations and revisions.
What “consistent characters and scenes” actually requires
Consistency is more than producing a similar-looking face twice. A production-ready character should retain recognizable facial structure, hairstyle, age, skin tone, body proportions, costume details and accessories across separate shots. Scene continuity also includes the location, lighting direction, time of day, props, screen direction and camera relationship.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese requirements are difficult because text-to-video systems regenerate visual details on every request. A prompt such as “the same detective enters the room” does not give the model a durable identity unless the workflow supplies a visual anchor and enough context. Reference images, keyframes, video-to-video input and shot-level controls are therefore more important than a model’s marketing sample.

Evaluate a tool with the shots you actually need: a close-up, a walking medium shot, a profile, a seated two-shot and a change in lighting. A character that looks stable in a single front-facing portrait may drift when viewed from behind or while moving.

Runway: the broadest benchmark for a professional workflow
Runway’s official model catalogue lists Gen-4.5, Veo 3.1 and Kling O3 in one platform. That matters when a project needs to compare visual behavior without rebuilding the entire workflow in several applications. The catalogue documents both image-to-video and text-to-video generation, image references and multishot prompts. You can use a designed still as the identity anchor, then generate motion rather than asking the model to invent the character from text each time.

Where Runway is strongest
- Model choice: You can test different current models against the same character sheet and shot list.
- Reference-driven creation: Image references provide a concrete visual target for face, costume and style.
- Multishot direction: A prompt can describe more than one shot, useful for planning a short sequence before refining individual clips.
- Mixed output needs: The catalogue includes Veo 3.1 with audio and speech and Kling O3 with a 4K option, so a project can choose a model based on sound or resolution as well as appearance.
What to verify before committing
Do not assume every model has identical controls, prices or rights. Select the exact model and inspect its current generation limits, export resolution, frame-rate choices, commercial-use terms and regional access. The published Gen-4.5 example is $0.28 per second on Runway in 2026; this is a model-catalogue rate, not a guaranteed all-in production cost. Retries, alternate takes, editing, upscaling and storage can raise the cost of a finished shot.
Luma Dream Machine and Ray3: the clearest single-reference continuity pitch
Ray3 explicitly advertises character reference, keyframes, video-to-video, HDR and continuity. Its product statement is direct: “Create consistent characters across shots with a single reference image.” Luma’s Dream Machine material likewise says users can bring their own image, style and character references to create unique, consistent characters from a single image.

How to use Ray3’s continuity controls
Build one clean reference first, then use keyframes to define where a shot starts and ends. Video-to-video is useful when the movement, timing or camera path already works but the appearance needs to be restyled or aligned to the character. HDR can preserve a wider range for a graded finish, but it does not by itself solve identity drift; the reference and shot design still determine whether the face and clothing hold.
Best fit and limits
Luma is a strong first test for creators who want a focused continuity workflow and rapid visual exploration. Treat the single-image claim as a workflow capability, not a promise that every angle will match perfectly. Test your most difficult shot—a profile, fast movement or occluded face—before building a long sequence. Current plans, credits, export settings and sound features are not established in the available product information, so confirm them in the service before budgeting.
Kling O3: a candidate for motion and 4K delivery
Runway’s catalogue lists Kling O3 with text, image and video-to-video generation, image references, optional audio, multishot prompts and a 4K variant. Those controls make it relevant when a recurring character must perform a physical action or when the delivery specification calls for higher resolution.
How to evaluate Kling for your character
- Create one reference image and a short character description that names immutable details such as hairstyle, jacket color, glasses and distinctive markings.
- Generate a stationary close-up to establish the face before testing movement.
- Use image-to-video for a controlled action, then compare the first and last frames with the reference.
- Try video-to-video when you have acceptable timing or choreography but need to change the visual treatment.
- Inspect the 4K output at 100 percent for eyes, fingers, logos, jewelry and fabric patterns; higher resolution can reveal mistakes that are hidden in a preview.
The published Runway example for Kling O3 4K is $0.13 per second in 2026. It is an example catalogue rate, so verify the current model, plan, credit conversion and export conditions. Optional audio is listed, but decide separately whether its speech and ambience meet your production’s quality and timing requirements.
Google Veo 3.1: choose it when sound is part of generation
The Runway catalogue describes Veo 3.1 as high-quality video generation with audio and speech. That makes it relevant when a clip must include dialogue, environmental sound or music rather than receiving a silent image sequence that you score later.

Questions to answer before selecting Veo 3.1
- Can you access the model in your country and through the account or platform you plan to use?
- Is native speech available at the resolution, duration and plan level your project requires?
- Can you supply the character reference and scene constraints in the specific interface you are using?
- Will you replace generated dialogue in post, or must lip movement and timing be reliable enough for a final cut?
Access, regional availability and plan limits change quickly. Confirm them immediately before production rather than relying on an older comparison. For dialogue-heavy work, run a short proof of concept with the final language, names and speaking pace; a visually consistent character is not enough if pronunciation or lip timing fails.
Choose by project requirement
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why | What to test first |
|---|---|---|---|
| One reference image carried through several shots | Luma Ray3 | Its documented feature is specifically character reference across shots. | Close-up, profile and walking shot using the same image. |
| Several models and a professional comparison workflow | Runway | Its catalogue combines multiple current models and reference-driven controls. | The identical five-shot test on Gen-4.5, Veo 3.1 and Kling O3. |
| Fast action or a 4K deliverable | Kling O3 | Image references, video-to-video, multishot prompts and a listed 4K variant. | Motion blur, hands, clothing physics and fine details at final resolution. |
| Generated dialogue, ambience or music | Veo 3.1 | Audio and speech are documented in the catalogue. | A short line of dialogue in the final language and accent. |
| Existing footage that needs a new look | Ray3 or Kling O3 | Both document video-to-video workflows. | Whether timing and camera motion survive the transformation. |
Prepare a character bible before generating video
A generator cannot preserve details that are absent, ambiguous or contradictory in the reference. Create a compact character bible and keep it beside every prompt.
Identity page
- Front, three-quarter and profile views with neutral expression.
- Age range, skin tone, face shape, eye color and hairstyle.
- Immutable identifiers such as a scar, mole, glasses or distinctive accessory.
- Height and body proportions stated relative to the scene, not as an unsupported exact measurement.
Costume page
- Color names and material descriptions for each garment.
- Which items remain on in every scene and which can change.
- Jewelry, logos, fasteners and patterns that must not be redesigned.
- A continuity rule for weather, dirt, damage and wetness.
Scene and camera page
- Location layout, time of day and primary light direction.
- Lens impression or framing, camera height and movement.
- Where the character enters, exits and looks.
- Props that must remain in the same hand or position between shots.
Use a clean, high-resolution reference without extreme shadows, heavy filters or obstructing text. Keep the original file unchanged so every model test starts from the same source.
A repeatable workflow for a short sequence
- Lock the brief. Write the duration, aspect ratio, delivery resolution, dialogue requirement and continuity rules before opening a generator.
- Make the reference. Produce the character sheet and choose one canonical image. Do not switch references casually between shots.
- Generate a motionless anchor. Create a close-up or gentle head turn first. Reject outputs with altered facial structure, hairline or costume before moving on.
- Establish keyframes. Where supported, define the opening and closing composition so the model has a visual route through the shot.
- Generate simple actions. Test walking, sitting and turning separately. Combining a complex stunt, camera orbit, costume change and new lighting in one prompt makes failures hard to diagnose.
- Extend continuity. Use video-to-video or a preceding clip as the source when timing and camera movement already work. Check the transition frame by frame.
- Add sound deliberately. If using Veo 3.1 or optional model audio, specify who speaks, what is heard in the environment and whether music is present. Keep a separate clean version when dialogue will be replaced in post.
- Run a continuity review. Compare adjacent shots for face, costume, screen direction, shadows, props and eyelines. Log failures by shot type so you can change one variable at a time.
- Export a master and alternatives. Keep the best clean take, the reference image, prompts and model/version information together. This makes a later re-generation possible if access or model behavior changes.
Prompting techniques that reduce identity drift
Separate immutable details from action
Put the character’s unchanging identity first, then describe the action and camera. For example, state the same hairstyle, glasses and navy coat in every prompt; follow with “walks from left to right in a medium shot” rather than rewriting the entire story around the character.
Describe one camera move
Use a single clear movement—slow dolly in, locked-off tripod or gentle pan—before attempting a compound move. Camera ambiguity often looks like character inconsistency because the model changes viewpoint and anatomy at the same time.

Use positive constraints and visual checks
Specify what must remain visible, such as both glasses frames or the red scarf, and inspect whether the model actually honors it. Do not rely on a long list of negative prompts to repair a weak reference; replace the reference or simplify the action when the same defect repeats.
Keep shot prompts modular
Maintain reusable blocks for character, costume, location, lighting and camera. Change only the block needed for the next shot. This makes it possible to identify whether a drift came from a new angle, a new garment or a new setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Budget the cost of a usable shot, not a single generation
Per-second pricing is only a starting point. A usable shot may require several attempts, a longer generation than the final edit, alternate aspect ratios, an upscale and a clean version without audio. Estimate each shot with:
usable-shot cost = duration × published rate × number of generations + any plan, upscale, storage or export charges
Recommended Free Tools
Using the 2026 Runway catalogue examples, an eight-second Gen-4.5 generation at $0.28 per second is $2.24 before retries or other charges. An eight-second Kling O3 4K generation at $0.13 per second is $1.04 on the same basis. These calculations do not predict the price of a finished scene; they show why a cheaper per-second model can still cost more if it needs many more attempts to preserve identity.

Troubleshoot the most common continuity failures
The face changes between shots
- Return to the canonical reference instead of using a drifting intermediate frame.
- Reduce action and camera movement, then establish a stable close-up.
- Keep age, hairstyle, accessories and lighting language identical in the prompt.
Clothing or accessories mutate
- Describe the garment’s color, material, closure and distinctive details together.
- Keep logos and tiny patterns out of shots where they cannot be rendered reliably.
- Use video-to-video or a keyframe when the previous costume state is already correct.
The scene no longer matches
- Carry forward a clean last frame or an explicit keyframe.
- Repeat location, time of day, light direction and prop placement.
- Generate a short bridge shot instead of forcing a large jump in one clip.
Motion looks good but identity fails
Prioritize a simpler action with a stronger reference. A visually impressive take that cannot cut with the surrounding footage is not a usable shot. Test the same action on another listed model when your platform provides that choice.
Audio is unusable
Separate visual continuity from sound continuity. Keep the best picture, then replace generated speech or ambience in an editor when pronunciation, timing or noise does not meet the brief. If native audio is essential, test the exact language and line length before generating a full sequence.

Before publishing or delivering work, read the current terms for the exact service, model and plan. Confirm that your plan permits commercial use, that reference images and uploaded footage may be processed for your project, and that the intended region can access the model. Also check whether the export contains a watermark, whether generated audio has separate restrictions, and how long project assets remain available.
Document the model version and generation date in your production records. Model names, prices and capabilities change; a reproducible record is the only reliable way to explain why a later re-generation looks different.
Final recommendation
Start with Luma Ray3 when a single reference image and explicit continuity controls are the central requirement. Start with Runway when you need a professional benchmark and want to compare Gen-4.5, Veo 3.1 and Kling O3 in one catalogue. Test Kling O3 for demanding motion or a 4K path, and choose Veo 3.1 when native speech, ambience or music is integral to the clip. In every case, make the decision from a controlled five-shot test and the cost of accepted footage—not from a single impressive demo.
