For most families, Khanmigo is the strongest documented choice for supervised AI homework help. Khan Academy describes moderation, daily interaction limits, and parent visibility into a child’s chats and activities. For students 13 and older in a school-managed Microsoft 365 environment, Microsoft’s Study and Learn Agent adds administrator-controlled access and content-safety filtering. Photomath is the most useful specialist for worked math steps, but its 13+ terms and camera-image processing deserve a careful privacy review.
No homework assistant is automatically safe or always correct. The right choice depends on your child’s age, whether a parent or school can review activity, what data the app receives, and whether it teaches a method instead of simply displaying an answer.

The table is a starting point, not a safety certification. Vendor documentation explains intended controls, but there is no independent head-to-head safety test or outcome statistic establishing that one service is universally safer.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A child-safe homework helper needs more than a polite interface. Evaluate six separate protections:
#1 Best Overall
- Develop math, reading, writing, coding, problem-solving and creativity skills with more than 20 educator-approved learning apps that grow with kids
- Find hundreds more games, videos, music and eBooks (sold separately) by going to the LeapFrog App Center and expand the learning experience
- Includes a three-month trial of LeapFrog Academy; subscribe to send kids on learning adventures filled with more than 2,000 engaging games, activities, eBooks, videos, songs and more
- Learning tablet includes a stylus, tough bumper with kickstand and a 7" shatter-safe screen; set time limits, manage apps and explore kid-friendly web content with parent controls
- Intended for ages 3-8 years; rechargeable lithium-ion battery included
- Age gating: The service should enforce a minimum age and obtain the consent required in the child’s region.
- Human visibility: Parents, guardians, teachers, or administrators should have a realistic way to review use, not merely a statement that supervision is encouraged.
- Content moderation: The system should filter or refuse sexual content, graphic violence, hate, self-harm instructions, and other dangerous requests.
- Learning safeguards: It should explain a method, ask a checking question, or guide the next step instead of making answer copying effortless.
- Data minimization: Know whether typed questions, photos, voice recordings, account identifiers, and derived data leave the device, how long they are retained, and who can review them.
- Administrative control: Schools should be able to enable, disable, or scope access by age group, class, or tenant policy.
These protections solve different problems. A strong content filter does not tell you who can read a child’s chat. A parent dashboard does not prevent a wrong algebra explanation. Treat each dimension separately.
Why Khanmigo is the best documented fit for parent-supervised tutoring
Supervision is part of the product model
Khan Academy’s safety article, updated July 2, 2025, states that every child with access receives clear communication that chat history and activities are visible to parents or guardians and, when applicable, the teacher and school administrator. That explicit visibility is unusual among general-purpose AI tools: the child is not asked to treat the conversation as a private, unreviewable exchange.
Khan Academy also describes moderation technology and limits on daily interaction. The limit is intended to keep sessions educational rather than allowing unlimited conversational use. Questionable content is reviewed with both safety and educational value in mind, so a refusal is not the only possible response; the system may redirect a learner toward an appropriate explanation.
What it can teach
Khanmigo is designed around Khan Academy’s curriculum and supports math, humanities, coding, and social studies. Its strongest use is guided practice: the learner explains what they have tried, receives a hint or next step, and checks the reasoning. That makes it a better match for a child who needs tutoring across subjects than a scanner that specializes in one type of problem.
Account and regional limits
Access for a learner under 18 is parent-mediated. The cited parent/learner plan guidance requires an adult account and a U.S. billing address, so families outside the United States or without that billing arrangement must verify current availability rather than assuming the same enrollment path. Plan names, prices, and regional eligibility are volatile and should be checked immediately before purchase.
Image handling
Khan Academy says images shared with Khanmigo are not stored under its privacy policies. Parents should still avoid uploading unnecessary names, faces, school IDs, or other identifying material. A non-retention statement for images does not make every other account or chat detail anonymous.
Microsoft Study and Learn: the strongest school-managed option for ages 13+
Eligibility is controlled by the school
Microsoft states that the Study and Learn Agent is available to Education users aged 13 or older with an A1, A3, or A5 Microsoft 365 Education license. In K–12 tenants, administrators configure age groups through Microsoft Entra ID. Students under 13 are not granted access to Copilot Chat or the Study and Learn Agent in that environment.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This arrangement is useful when a school already manages student identities, devices, and acceptable-use rules. A parent cannot independently create access for a younger child through the school tenant; the administrator’s age classification and license assignment determine eligibility.
Moderation and refusal behavior
Microsoft documents content-safety filters covering self-harm, sexual content, violence, and hate speech. The agent is intended to use an educational, neutral tone and decline requests that violate Microsoft’s Responsible AI standards. Those filters address dangerous content, while the school’s tenant policies govern access and retention. Ask the school which administrators can review prompts, what logs are retained, and how long they remain available.
Best use cases
Study and Learn suits a teenager working inside a school-managed Microsoft 365 environment, especially when the teacher wants a consistent tool rather than an unapproved public chatbot. It can support subject study and revision, but the quality of its explanation still depends on the prompt, the course context, and the student’s checking of the result.
Microsoft Copilot for teenagers using personal accounts
Microsoft describes a 13+ minimum for its consumer Copilot in supported regions, with some regions setting higher minimums. Under-13 children should not be given access simply because a device or family account makes sign-in possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- 2-in-1 laptop toy for preschoolers features a screen that flips to convert from keyboard to tablet mode
- Learning laptop features a keyboard with letters A-Z and numbers 1-10, or swivel and transform it into a touch tablet
- Kids can pretend to be like mom and dad with role-play activities like e-mailing Scout; parents can customize to help their child spell their own name
- Five learning modes include ABCs, numbers, games, music and messages
- Intended for ages 2-5 years; requires 3 AA batteries; batteries included for demo purposes only; new batteries recommended for regular use
For young people, Microsoft describes age-appropriate responses, safety filters, and reminders that AI can be wrong. Parents can use Microsoft Family Safety or device-level settings to block access, impose time limits, or restrict features. These controls are practical when a child uses a personal account, but they are not the same as a teacher dashboard showing assignment-related work.
Microsoft says chats from users under 18 are not used to train AI models on its cited young-people page. The same material allows for human review in circumstances such as safety investigations, legal requirements, product improvement, or troubleshooting. Explain that distinction to a teenager: “not used to train” does not mean “never accessible to a human.” Recheck the current wording and regional terms before relying on it for a school policy.
Photomath: excellent worked math steps, with a camera-data trade-off
What it does well
Photomath is a math specialist. A student can scan a printed, handwritten, or on-screen problem and receive a step-by-step explanation, sometimes with multiple solution methods. It covers elementary arithmetic through calculus, making it useful when the bottleneck is reading a symbolic expression or seeing how a procedure unfolds.
The Google Play listing showed 100M+ downloads and 3.1M reviews for Google LLC, with the listing updated July 29, 2026. Those figures describe listing activity, not proof that explanations are correct or that the app is appropriate for every child.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Age and anti-cheating rules
Photomath’s terms effective October 1, 2025 set a 13+ minimum and require parental permission for minors. The terms call Photomath an educational aid and learning tool and prohibit using it for cheating. In practice, the app can display a result quickly, so adults should make “explain, then check” the household rule: the child writes the problem, predicts the next step, reads the explanation, and solves a similar example without scanning it.
Privacy questions before scanning
Photomath’s policy says it will not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 and may require consent for processing from under-16 users where applicable. It also explains that camera images and derivatives may be stored on the device and sent to servers when connected to Wi-Fi for recognition, indexing, testing, and service improvement. The Google Play data-safety panel reports possible collection and sharing categories that vary by use, region, and age.
Do not scan a worksheet containing a child’s full name, student number, teacher comments, or other classmates’ information. Crop to the problem, disable unnecessary permissions, and review the current in-app privacy choices before the first use.
Socratic by Google: useful resource discovery, weaker documented child safeguards
Google’s help material says Socratic can analyze a photo, typed question, or voice input and present relevant resources to help a learner understand the topic. That makes it useful when a student needs a video, definition, diagram, or reference rather than a single generated answer.
The cited material does not establish a child-specific safety program or a current age policy. Parents should therefore treat Socratic as an ordinary connected app: use a supervised device, verify the account age, review permissions, and check the resources it recommends. Do not infer that the absence of a documented child dashboard means the tool is unsafe; it means the available documentation does not establish that protection.
Choose by age, supervision, and assignment type
For a child under 13
Start with a parent-mediated service whose documentation explicitly addresses children, such as Khanmigo where the current regional enrollment rules allow it. Do not create a personal Copilot account for a child below Microsoft’s minimum. For a school-issued account, ask the school whether its tenant blocks under-13 access and what alternative support it provides.
For a 13- to 17-year-old in school
If the school provides Microsoft 365 Education, Study and Learn offers the clearest administrator-controlled route. If the student works at home across several subjects, Khanmigo provides more curriculum-connected tutoring, provided the parent can enroll under the current regional rules. Personal Copilot can be a supplementary tool when family controls are enabled, but it lacks the same school-tenant context.

For a teenager who needs math steps
Photomath is the focused choice when the student can photograph a clean problem and wants a worked method. Pair it with a no-copy routine and a privacy check because its camera workflow sends images or derivatives to servers in some circumstances.
For finding explanations and resources
Socratic can be useful for locating material from a typed, photographed, or spoken question. Because the cited documentation does not establish child-specific safeguards, use it only with the same device supervision and source-checking you would apply to a general study app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set up a safer homework routine
- Confirm eligibility first. Record the child’s age, country, account type, and whether a school license is involved. Do not bypass an age gate by entering an adult’s birth date.
- Choose the supervising adult. For a family account, decide which parent or guardian will review activity. For a school account, ask the administrator who can access logs and what retention period applies.
- Minimize submitted information. Remove names, student IDs, faces, addresses, and classmates’ work from screenshots. Crop a math image to the expression itself.
- Set the device controls. Use Family Safety or the operating system’s child profile to limit time, block unapproved installs, and require permission for camera, microphone, and photo-library access.
- Write a learning rule. Require the child to ask for a hint or explanation before requesting a final answer. After using the tool, have them solve a similar problem without assistance.
- Verify important results. Compare calculations with the textbook, teacher’s rubric, an official reference, or a second independent method. AI can produce confident but incorrect work.
- Review occasionally, not constantly. Look for unsafe topics, answer-copying, personal disclosures, and repeated misconceptions. Use the review to teach judgment rather than to punish an honest question.
Privacy checklist for parents and schools
- What is the minimum age in the child’s region, and is parental consent required?
- Can a parent, teacher, or administrator see prompts, responses, uploaded images, or only account activity?
- Are photos processed on the device, sent to servers, retained, or used for recognition and improvement?
- Are under-18 conversations used to train models, and can people review them for safety or support?
- Which permissions are essential? A homework helper should not need unrelated contacts or location access.
- Can the account be deleted, and what copies remain in school or service backups?
- Does the school’s acceptable-use policy permit generative AI for the assignment?
Privacy notices and data-safety labels change. Read the current policy shown for your country and account type instead of relying on an old screenshot or a store description from another region.
Prevent answer copying without banning useful help
A safe workflow changes the child’s task from “get the answer” to “show understanding.” For a math problem, ask the child to identify the known values and predict the operation before scanning it. For an essay, ask the tool for an outline or questions to investigate, then require the student to write the draft and cite the assigned sources. For coding, have the child explain each line and test a small change independently.
Keep the original attempt. It lets an adult see whether the tool corrected a misconception or simply replaced the child’s work. If the assignment rules prohibit AI, do not use a helper even when the app’s terms describe educational use; the teacher’s rule controls that assignment.

Common failure modes and fixes
The child cannot sign in
Check age eligibility, country, account type, and whether a parent or school administrator must approve access. For Study and Learn, verify that the tenant has an A1, A3, or A5 Education license and that the student’s age group is configured correctly.
The tool gives a confident wrong answer
Ask it to show assumptions and an intermediate check, then verify with the textbook or teacher. A second AI response is not independent proof because both systems can share similar errors.
A scanned problem is misread
Crop tightly, improve lighting, write clearly, and type the expression manually. Do not upload a page containing personal information simply to improve recognition.
The child is copying every result
Switch to hint-first prompts, disable unrestricted access where the device allows it, and require a similar unsolved example after each assisted problem. If the pattern continues, pause the app and discuss the assignment with the teacher.
The school will not enable the tool
Respect the tenant policy. Ask whether the school offers an approved alternative, a teacher-created chatbot, or a supervised lab session. A personal account should not be used to evade a school’s privacy or assessment rules.
Bottom-line decision
Choose Khanmigo when parent visibility and guided tutoring across subjects are the priority and the current enrollment rules fit your family. Choose Microsoft Study and Learn when a 13+ student is working in a properly configured Microsoft 365 Education tenant. Choose Photomath for focused, step-by-step math help only after accepting its 13+ requirement and reviewing camera-data handling. Use personal Copilot or Socratic only with active device supervision, explicit age compliance, and a routine that treats every AI answer as a draft to verify.
