Rowan by Rocket Money is the clearest match for a budgeting app that works through two-way carrier SMS. You can ask account questions, maintain a budget and receive financial prompts in an ordinary text conversation. Herbert is the better fit when you want the service to text you first with read-only alerts. HomeSum and Omoi import bank transaction texts locally, while Koma and Finny use natural-language input inside an app rather than a conventional SMS thread.

The distinction matters: “works by text” can mean conversational SMS, proactive SMS alerts, local parsing of bank messages, or simply typing an expense into an in-app chat. The guide below separates those workflows, costs, privacy models and regional limits.

What counts as a budgeting app that works by text?

There are four different products hidden behind searches such as “AI budget app by SMS” or “budget app that reads bank text messages.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Two-way carrier SMS: You send and receive ordinary text messages, ask questions and update the budget without opening the app. Rowan is the strongest example.
  • Proactive SMS: The service connects to financial accounts and texts alerts first. Herbert uses this model; it is read-only and does not move money.
  • Local bank-SMS import: An Android or iPhone workflow reads transaction notifications, extracts the details and adds a confirmed expense. HomeSum and Omoi fit here.
  • In-app text chat: You type natural-language expenses into an app or web interface. Koma and Finny support this approach, but they should not be described as carrier-SMS services.

Texting an expense is also different from letting an assistant access your bank. A text-first interface can be convenient while account access, notification permissions and confirmation rules determine what the system can actually do.

1. Rowan: best two-way SMS budget assistant

Choose Rowan if your requirement is a real back-and-forth conversation in the phone’s text-message channel. Rocket Money describes Rowan as living in your text messages: you can ask about spending, maintain a budget, receive anomaly and upcoming-bill warnings, and take action on subscriptions and bills.

Rocket Companies announced Rowan on August 25, 2026. Its release says the assistant, developed with Anthropic, moves money management from dashboards into conversational texts. The same announcement says Rowan can monitor finances, renegotiate recurring bills, cancel subscriptions and create automated savings transfers by text. Those are materially stronger capabilities than simply importing a transaction or recording “coffee $5.”

What a Rowan conversation can cover

  • Ask where money went or how spending compares with the budget.
  • Update budget information through text rather than opening a dashboard.
  • Receive warnings about unusual activity and upcoming bills.
  • Handle supported subscription and recurring-bill actions.
  • Set up automated savings transfers where the feature and account are eligible.

Cost and availability

Rocket Money’s listing places Rowan in the Premium+ plan at $15 per month. The price is a recurring subscription, not a one-time fee. Confirm that Premium+ and Rowan are available for your country, account type and current plan before subscribing; the launch announcement and product listing do not establish universal regional availability.

Best for

Rowan is the best choice for someone who specifically wants to text an AI about a budget and potentially authorize supported financial actions from that conversation. It is less suitable if you only want local, no-account-access transaction importing.

2. Herbert: best for proactive financial texts

Herbert is built around the opposite interaction pattern: you do not have to start the conversation. Its product page calls it “The money app that texts you first.” After connecting accounts, it sends alerts about forgotten subscriptions, idle cash, bill increases and low balances, while also categorizing transactions and identifying recurring charges.

How Herbert connects and what it cannot do

Herbert says it connects read-only through Plaid to more than 12,000 banks. Read-only access lets it analyze account information without granting permission to transfer or withdraw funds. The service explicitly says it never moves your money, so it should be treated as an alerting and analysis tool rather than an automated bill-pay or savings-transfer service.

Price and trial

The listed offer is a 30-day free trial, followed by $13 per month or $95 per year. The annual option reduces the effective monthly cost when paid for a full year, but it is a recurring annual subscription. Herbert’s comparison information is stated as current to June 2026, so check the live checkout page for changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpreting the 98% open-rate figure

Herbert reports a 98% text open rate. That is a vendor-reported marketing statistic, not an independent head-to-head study, and it does not measure budgeting improvement, savings or debt reduction. Use it only as an indication of the company’s claimed message visibility.

Best for

Pick Herbert when the main problem is missing reminders rather than entering every expense. It is particularly suited to users who want a service to surface subscriptions, cash sitting idle, unusual bill changes or low balances without giving the service transaction authority.

3. HomeSum: local MENA SMS and notification capture

HomeSum is useful when your bank already sends transaction texts or Android notifications and you want those messages converted into a spending record. It is not presented as a two-way SMS chatbot. The app’s Pro plan adds automatic SMS and notification capture, receipt scanning, an AI assistant and advanced insights.

How its privacy model works

HomeSum says bank texts are parsed on the device, the message content is never uploaded and only the expense you confirm is saved. That design limits the amount of raw financial text leaving the phone. It also means the workflow depends on the phone receiving a recognizable bank message and the local parser correctly identifying its fields.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android and iPhone setup differences

  • Android: Capture is automatic after the required notification or SMS permissions are granted.
  • iPhone: HomeSum uses a one-time Shortcuts automation rather than unrestricted background SMS reading. Follow the app’s current shortcut instructions and test it with a non-sensitive transaction notification.

Price and audience

HomeSum targets MENA use cases. Its listed Pro price is EGP 69 per month or EGP 699 per year. The yearly price is billed as an annual subscription; the product information does not establish a universal free allowance. This is the most relevant option in the list for readers whose banks issue Egyptian-pound or other regional transaction notifications, provided their message format is supported.

The sturdy pink and gold coil binding allows for effortless flipping, while the A5 size makes it the perfect companion for your daily adventures, fitting into your bag or backpack without taking up too much space.

4. Omoi: privacy-oriented Android SMS import

Omoi’s feature is an opt-in Android parser for bank transaction SMS. It extracts the amount, merchant, date and bank on the device, proposes a categorized expense and discards the original message. The expense does not count against the budget until you confirm it.

Why confirmation matters

Bank alerts can include reversals, refunds, transfers or incomplete merchant descriptions. Omoi’s confirmation step keeps an incorrectly parsed message from immediately changing the budget. Review the merchant and amount before accepting each proposed record, especially when a bank sends multiple alerts for one purchase.

What Omoi is not

Omoi should be described as local SMS import, not as an AI assistant you can text conversationally. The workflow starts with a bank message arriving on Android; it does not establish two-way carrier-SMS questions, proactive budgeting advice or money movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Koma: GCC-focused multilingual chat and pay-cycle budgeting

Koma is designed for users in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. Its primary interface is app or web chat, with a Telegram-style logging experience described on the product page. It accepts typed, spoken or photographed expenses in English, Arabic and Arabizi.

Budgeting features that stand out

  • Pay-cycle budgeting instead of assuming a calendar-month paycheck.
  • Family-support tracking, which is relevant when regular transfers to relatives are part of the budget.
  • Optional reading of selected Android payment alerts without requiring a bank login.
  • Natural-language entry through text, voice or a photograph of a receipt.

Price and message allowance

The free tier includes 10 AI messages per pay cycle. Koma+ is listed at AED 23 per month. Because the allowance resets by pay cycle rather than necessarily by calendar month, check how the app defines your cycle before relying on the free tier for daily logging.

Best for

Koma is the strongest regional choice in this list for multilingual, pay-cycle-oriented budgeting. It is not the right label for a carrier-SMS app: most interaction occurs inside the app or web chat, with Android payment-alert capture as an optional input source.

6. Finny: simple text entry on iPhone

Finny belongs in a broader search for “budgeting by text” because it understands manually entered phrases such as “groceries $42.” Its feature set also includes voice input and receipt photos, followed by confirmation of the AI’s suggested category or amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finny runs on iOS and does not require bank linking. That reduces account-access concerns, but it also means transactions are recorded only when you enter them or capture a receipt. Finny is therefore a convenient manual logger, not a service that reads carrier SMS or sends bank alerts.

Which workflow should you choose?

Choose two-way SMS when you want conversation and actions

Select Rowan if your priority is asking questions, changing budget information and receiving answers in ordinary text messages. Confirm the Premium+ price and whether bill, subscription and savings actions are enabled for your account.

Choose proactive SMS when reminders are the problem

Choose Herbert if you often overlook subscriptions, bill increases, idle cash or low balances. Its read-only model is useful when you want analysis without authorizing transfers.

Choose local SMS parsing when privacy and automation come first

HomeSum or Omoi is more appropriate when your bank sends transaction notifications and you prefer on-device extraction. HomeSum offers a broader MENA-oriented package with receipts and insights; Omoi emphasizes a focused Android parser, discarded originals and confirmation before budgeting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose in-app chat for regional or manual logging

Koma fits GCC users who need Arabic, Arabizi, pay-cycle and family-support tracking. Finny fits iPhone users who want to type or speak individual expenses without linking a bank.

How to set up a text-first budgeting workflow safely

  1. Define the channel you actually need. Decide whether you require carrier SMS, alerts, local bank-message import or in-app text entry. Do not grant bank access merely because an app advertises “text support.”
  2. Check country, language and device support. Koma is aimed at six GCC markets; HomeSum targets MENA; Omoi documents Android; Finny documents iOS. Rowan and Herbert availability can depend on account and regional coverage.
  3. Review permissions before enabling automation. For SMS or notification capture, inspect which messages the app can read and whether filtering can be limited to bank senders.
  4. Start with confirmation enabled. Require approval for imported transactions until you have verified that merchant names, amounts, dates and refunds are parsed correctly.
  5. Use read-only connections where possible. Herbert’s Plaid connection is explicitly read-only. If another service requests transaction or transfer authority, compare that permission with the feature you actually need.
  6. Test one known transaction. Send a small text entry, wait for one bank alert or import one receipt, then check category, amount and date before importing a larger history.
  7. Set notification boundaries. Choose quiet hours and alert types where the service allows it. Proactive messages are useful only when they remain specific and manageable.
  8. Audit connected accounts monthly. Remove closed accounts, expired bank connections and unused phone automations. Review subscription renewals for paid plans before a trial ends.

Privacy and security considerations

Carrier SMS is convenient but not a private vault

Ordinary SMS can appear in message backups, carrier systems and linked devices. Avoid sending full account numbers, passwords, one-time codes or identity documents in a budgeting conversation. Use the text channel for questions and confirmations, not secrets.

Local parsing reduces raw-message exposure

HomeSum and Omoi describe on-device extraction. In their workflows, the bank message is processed locally and a confirmed expense is retained instead of the original text. This can reduce exposure, but the phone itself, notification history and app database still need a screen lock, current operating system and encrypted backup.

Read-only is a meaningful boundary

Herbert’s read-only Plaid model allows analysis without money movement. Rowan’s announced ability to create automated savings transfers is a different risk category: review the destination account, amount, schedule and cancellation process before enabling it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check what “AI” is allowed to do

An assistant may explain a transaction, predict a bill, categorize spending or execute an action. Treat those as separate permissions. Ask whether a suggested action requires confirmation and whether a human support path exists for an incorrect cancellation, transfer or category.

Common failure modes and fixes

The app never sees a bank text

  • Confirm that the bank sends an SMS or notification to the same device.
  • Recheck Android notification or SMS permission and battery-optimization settings.
  • On iPhone, verify that the Shortcuts automation is enabled and that the bank’s message format matches the parser.
  • Send a test transaction and wait for the bank’s normal delivery delay before troubleshooting the app.

The amount or merchant is wrong

  • Do not confirm the proposed expense.
  • Check whether the message is a pending authorization, final charge, refund or reversal.
  • Edit the merchant and category manually, then watch whether later alerts create a duplicate.

Alerts are too frequent

  • Disable low-priority alert types first, such as idle-cash notices.
  • Set quiet hours if available.
  • For Herbert, keep only the categories that correspond to a decision you will actually make.

A trial or subscription renews unexpectedly

  • Record the trial end date when you start it.
  • Check the billing page for monthly versus annual renewal.
  • Cancel through the account’s subscription controls before the renewal deadline if the service is not useful.

Carrier SMS is unavailable in your country

Use the app’s native chat, local notification parsing or manual text entry instead of assuming that an SMS number will work internationally. Koma, HomeSum and Finny provide alternatives, but their channels are different from Rowan’s carrier-SMS workflow.

Bottom line

For a genuine two-way budgeting conversation by carrier text, Rowan is the strongest match, with Premium+ listed at $15 per month and additional bill and savings actions announced by Rocket Companies on August 25, 2026. Herbert is the better choice for proactive, read-only alerts at $13 per month or $95 per year after a 30-day trial. HomeSum and Omoi are local bank-SMS import tools, while Koma and Finny are in-app text-entry options. Choose by channel and permission model first, then by price.
