For presenter-style AI video, start by deciding whether you need a ready-made avatar or a digital presenter based on a real person. HeyGen’s product materials describe stock, photo and custom avatars; Synthesia documents several personal-avatar workflows, including a live consent step for its video-based process. Neither service can be called the independently tested best based on the available evidence: the feature and plan details below come from the companies themselves, not a comparative quality test.
Which AI avatar generator should you try?
Choose by workflow rather than by a universal ranking. If you want to make a video without recording a person, look for a suitable stock avatar and check that the tool supports your script, language and export needs. If you want an avatar based on yourself or another person, check what input the service accepts—such as a photo or video—and how it handles consent and likeness verification.
HeyGen’s official avatar page describes stock avatars, photo-avatar animation, custom avatars based on a recording, voice options and multilingual presentation. Synthesia’s documentation describes personal avatars made from a photo, recorded or uploaded video, or Studio avatars. HeyGen’s product page says its avatar library includes 1,100+ stock avatars and supports 177+ languages and dialects. Those are vendor-published figures, not independent measurements, and the available selection may change. The page also describes animating photo avatars and creating custom avatars from a recording. Before choosing it, confirm that the avatar type you want is available to your account, that your intended language and voice are supported, and that the current plan covers the video length, credits and export options you need. HeyGen’s advertised features do not by themselves establish avatar realism or ease of use; try a short video with your own script and target format before committing.
Synthesia: personal-avatar workflows and consent
Synthesia documents personal-avatar creation from a photo, recorded or uploaded video, and Studio avatars. For its documented video workflow, the person shown must provide a live consent recording. Synthesia states: “The consent video must be recorded live, and it must be the same person in the personal avatar creation footage.” This is a Synthesia-specific process, not a rule shared by every service. The documentation allows webcam recording or uploading footage and recommends checking the webcam and microphone and recording in a quiet, well-lit space. A webcam is therefore useful if you plan to record footage directly, but it is not a general requirement: you can upload suitable footage or choose a stock avatar instead. The documentation also notes that softbox lighting can work well; it is optional, not a prerequisite.
Use a person’s likeness and voice only with permission, and check the service’s applicable consent and usage rules before creating or distributing an avatar. A platform’s capture steps are not a complete legal analysis.

Do not compare a headline monthly price alone. Work out how many finished videos you expect to make, which features consume credits, and whether the plan includes the avatar and export format you need. Recheck those details at the point of purchase because plan structures and limits can change.

How to create an AI avatar of yourself
- Choose the avatar route. Decide whether you want to animate a photo, record or upload video, or use a stock avatar. The available routes and requirements vary by service.
- Check consent and likeness rules. If the avatar represents you or someone else, review the provider’s process first. For Synthesia’s documented video workflow, the person in the footage must also record the live consent video.
- Prepare the recording if needed. For Synthesia’s recording workflow, check your webcam and microphone and use a quiet, well-lit setting. If you already have suitable footage, its documentation also describes uploading it; a webcam is not mandatory.
- Make a short trial video. Use the script, language, voice and output format you plan to use. This lets you assess whether the workflow meets your needs without assuming product-page claims establish quality.
- Check plan limits before scaling up. Confirm the current credit allowance, video length, avatar access and export options for the plan you would use.
What to check before choosing
- Avatar type: Stock avatars avoid a personal-footage workflow; a custom avatar may better suit a presenter representing you or your organization.
- Consent process: Check which person must consent, how consent is captured and what the service permits. Do not assume one company’s process applies to another.
- Language and voice: Verify support for the exact language, dialect and voice you need. Published totals are vendor claims and do not guarantee that a particular voice or feature is available on your plan.
- Production workflow: Confirm how scripts, editing, recording or uploads, and final exports fit into your process.
- Usage limits: Check credits, video duration, avatar availability and export features against your expected output.
- Evidence quality: Treat feature pages and pricing pages as vendor descriptions. They do not provide an independent comparison of realism, ease of use or value.
