The best approach is layered: adjust PS5 Accessibility settings first, then use each game’s own control, display, audio, and gameplay options. For a physically limiting DualSense layout, Sony’s Access controller for PS5 is the most flexible hardware option. Do not assume a Soulslike has an easy mode; accessibility features and combat difficulty are separate decisions.

Before buying or downloading a title, inspect its PlayStation Store Accessibility Tags and confirm the same options in its in-game menus. Demon’s Souls provides a useful PS5 reference point, with volume controls, mono and 3D audio, basic subtitles, stick inversion, and switches for motion, touch, vibration, and adaptive-trigger effects, but its official listing does not show a selectable easy or normal mode.

What “accessibility” means in a Soulslike

Soulslike games usually make precise timing, camera control, stamina management, and repeated attempts central to combat. An accessibility setting can remove a physical, visual, auditory, or interface barrier without reducing that combat challenge. For example, moving dodge from an awkward button, enlarging text, disabling adaptive-trigger resistance, or routing stereo audio to mono may let a player perform the same encounter on more equal terms.

Difficulty assistance is a different category. It may be a formal difficulty selector, a game-speed option, simplified actions, an alternative to rapid button presses, optional co-op, or mechanics that make character builds more forgiving. Many Soulslikes preserve a fixed combat setting while offering extensive accessibility controls. Treat “accessible” and “easy” as separate questions when comparing games.

Set up the PS5 before launching a game

Console-level settings can solve common barriers across compatible games and menus. Open Settings > Accessibility on the PS5. Sony groups controller settings, display and text settings, screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription, mono audio, haptic feedback, and zoom in this area.

Remap the controls that matter most

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Controllers.
  2. Choose Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller.
  3. Move the actions that cause the most strain or are hardest to reach. In a Soulslike, that commonly means attack, dodge, interact, lock-on, or camera movement.
  4. Write down the new layout before entering a boss fight, then test every essential action in a safe area. A remap that helps one action can make another action less obvious, especially when a game displays the original button prompts.

System remapping changes the controller input, not necessarily the labels drawn by the game. If an on-screen prompt appears inconsistent with your physical layout, rely on your tested mapping and check whether the game offers its own remapping menu.

Reduce vibration and adaptive resistance

In Settings > Accessibility, adjust haptic feedback and controller effects when vibration or trigger resistance causes fatigue, pain, or sensory discomfort. Some games expose separate toggles, so check both the console and the game’s options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Demon’s Souls explicitly lists play without controller vibration and play without adaptive-trigger effects. Disabling those effects does not remove attacks, dodges, or other combat actions; it removes physical feedback that some players cannot comfortably use.

Improve text and visual comfort

Use the PS5 display and text tools to test zoom, text size, bold text, high contrast, color correction, inverted colors, and reduced motion. These are console-level tools, and their effect can differ between a game scene, a game menu, and another application. Check a game’s own subtitle, HUD, and camera settings as well.

  • Zoom: useful for reading small menu text or item descriptions, but it may obscure part of the screen while active.
  • Text size and bold text: improve legibility where the game uses system-supported text, but cannot guarantee that every game font will enlarge.
  • High contrast and color correction: can help separate menus or visual effects; verify that enemy tells and environmental clues remain distinguishable.
  • Inverted colors: may help some visual conditions but can make a game’s intended color cues harder to interpret.
  • Reduced motion: can reduce discomfort from interface or camera movement where a game honors the system setting. It will not necessarily change every attack animation or cutscene.

Use audio alternatives deliberately

The Accessibility menu includes mono audio, a screen reader, closed captions, and chat transcription. Mono audio combines left and right channels, which can make dialogue or effects easier to hear with one-sided hearing loss or a single speaker, although it removes directional separation.

Screen-reader and closed-caption behavior depends on the game. A store tag or console feature does not guarantee captions for every line, ambient sound, or cinematic. Check the title’s documented coverage before relying on it for boss cues or story dialogue.

How to check a Soulslike before you start

PlayStation Store Accessibility Tags are the fastest way to narrow a purchase or download. Sony reported more than 50 tags across six categories when the program launched in 2023 and more than 700 games with tags in its 2024 update. Tag coverage changes as publishers add information, so treat the listing as a starting point rather than a substitute for testing.

  1. From the PS5 Games home screen, open PlayStation Store.
  2. Select the game.
  3. Press Triangle, or open the side panel, to view the title’s accessibility features.
  4. Compare the tags across the six practical areas below.
  5. After installation, open the game’s settings and verify the exact labels, scope, and timing of each feature.
Comparison area What to look for Why it matters in a Soulslike
Visual readability Text size, high contrast, color options, camera or motion controls Item descriptions, stamina and health indicators, enemy tells, and dark environments must remain readable.
Audio alternatives Mono audio, individual volume controls, 3D audio, audio descriptions where listed Footsteps, attack cues, dialogue, and music can be separated or made audible without relying on stereo positioning.
Subtitles and captions Subtitle availability and whether coverage is basic or broader Captions can replace spoken story information, but “basic” coverage may not caption every sound or line.
Control remapping and sensitivity Button remapping, stick sensitivity, inversion, alternatives to motion or rapid presses Lets a player place dodge, attack, lock-on, or camera actions on reachable inputs and reduce unwanted camera movement.
Gameplay or difficulty aids Difficulty settings, game speed, simplified quick-time events, skippable puzzles, or other assistance These may change timing or progression, but their presence is not universal and does not imply an easy mode.
Online communication Chat transcription and related communication features Useful when co-op or messages are part of a player’s strategy, especially when voice chat is inaccessible.

Record whether an option is always available, selectable only when starting a save, or unavailable after a particular point. Sony’s tag system identifies supported feature categories; it does not establish a universal rule for how every developer implements or locks them.

Difficulty assistance: identify the form, not just the label

There is no authoritative, current matrix covering every Soulslike on PS5, and “Soulslike” is not a single technical standard. Compare the actual aid a game provides rather than assuming that a familiar genre label predicts an easy mode.

Formal difficulty selectors

A game may offer easy, normal, hard, or another named setting. Confirm when the selector appears and whether it can be changed during an existing save. A title with no selector can still have robust remapping, subtitle, audio, and haptic controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Game-speed and timing options

Some accessibility taxonomies include game-speed controls. Slowing a game can help a player process an incoming attack or a quick-time event; speeding it up can help players who find long animations uncomfortable. Verify whether the setting affects combat, menus, cutscenes, or only a specific sequence.

Simplified actions and alternatives to rapid presses

Look for simplified quick-time events, hold-instead-of-mash inputs, or alternatives to motion controls. These options target a particular physical action and may not change enemy health, damage, or the timing of ordinary combat.

Co-op and build flexibility

Optional co-op can distribute attention during difficult encounters, while flexible respec or build systems can let a player choose a more forgiving play style. These are forms of assistance, not proof that a game has an easy setting. Check whether online play requires a subscription, whether co-op is available throughout the campaign, and which bosses or areas support it; those details vary by title and are not established by the Store tag categories alone.

Audio Individual volume controls, mono audio, and 3D audio.
Subtitles Basic subtitles for the main story and main characters.
Stick control Basic stick inversion.
Motion and touch Play without motion controls and play without touch controls.
Controller effects Play without controller vibration and play without adaptive-trigger effects.

The game’s official page describes the remake as retaining a “brutal challenge” and supporting 4K and high-frame-rate modes, haptics, and Tempest 3D AudioTech with compatible headphones. Those presentation features are separate from difficulty selection.

The official listing reviewed for this guide does not show a selectable easy or normal difficulty mode. The accurate expectation is therefore a fixed combat challenge with the listed control, audio, subtitle, and feedback choices—not an easy-mode promise. Players who need larger text, different button placement, or reduced motion should still test the PS5 system settings and the game’s menus, because the Store entry does not describe every console-level behavior.

When the DualSense layout is the barrier

If reaching several buttons, holding a trigger, or maintaining a conventional two-stick grip is not practical, the Access controller for PS5 is Sony’s clearest hardware option. Sony describes it as a highly customizable and adaptive controller kit designed to make gaming more accessible.

Documented hardware and software flexibility

  • Swappable button and stick configurations let you choose positions that fit your range of motion.
  • A 360-degree orientation supports different physical mounting and hand positions.
  • The controller can be used on a flat surface, reducing the need to hold a conventional gamepad.
  • An AMPS-pattern mounting option supports compatible mounting setups.

Use the controller’s configuration alongside the game’s own remapping and the PS5’s custom assignments. Start with one essential action—usually dodge, attack, or lock-on—then add other actions only after confirming that simultaneous inputs and camera control remain manageable. A setup that is physically comfortable still needs to match the game’s prompts and timing.

A practical setup sequence for a new Soulslike

  1. Check the Store listing. Read the Accessibility Tags and note visual, audio, subtitle, control, gameplay, and communication features.
  2. Configure the console. Set button assignments, text and display aids, audio options, screen reader or captions, and haptic preferences under Settings > Accessibility.
  3. Open the game’s options before starting. Look for control remapping, stick inversion or sensitivity, subtitle presentation, audio sliders, camera behavior, motion controls, and any difficulty or speed selector.
  4. Test in a low-risk area. Confirm that attack, dodge, lock-on, interact, camera movement, pause, and menu navigation all work with the new layout.
  5. Check feedback and readability. Play with vibration or adaptive triggers disabled if needed, then verify that visual or audio cues remain understandable without those effects.
  6. Decide how much assistance to use. If the game offers speed, simplified actions, co-op, or build flexibility, enable only the options that remove your barrier rather than changing unrelated challenge.
  7. Recheck after updates. A patch can add, rename, or relocate an option. Revisit the in-game menu if prompts or behavior change.

Common problems and fixes

“The Store says the game supports a feature, but I cannot find it.”

Tags describe supported categories, not a universal menu path. Check the title’s Settings, Controller, Accessibility, Audio, Display, and Language sections. Some options appear only during initial setup or apply only to a specific mode.

“My remapped buttons do not match the prompts.”

System-level remapping can leave the game’s labels unchanged. Test every action in a safe area, write down the physical mapping, and use the game’s native remapping if available. Avoid changing both layers repeatedly without recording the result.

“Turning off vibration removed a useful warning.”

Vibration can communicate an attack, impact, or low-health state, but it is not the only possible cue. Increase visual readability, use available audio controls or subtitles, and learn the animation or sound cue that remains. In Demon’s Souls, the listing specifically supports playing without vibration and without adaptive-trigger effects.

“Subtitles are present, but important information is still missing.”

Check the scope. Demon’s Souls is listed with basic subtitles for the main story and main characters, which does not establish full captions for every ambient sound or combat cue. Use mono audio or volume controls when hearing directional or quiet sounds is difficult.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I need an easier experience, but there is no easy mode.”

Separate the barrier from the challenge. Use remapping, reduced feedback, visual and audio adjustments, simplified actions, game-speed assistance, co-op, or build flexibility where the title provides them. If none of those options address the problem, the Store listing and an in-game test are more reliable than assuming another Soulslike will offer a formal easy setting.

How to make a responsible comparison

Do not rank an entire genre from a single game’s feature list. A fair PS5 comparison should state the title, edition, platform, and the exact options documented in its Store listing and menus. Distinguish “tagged by Sony” from “verified in the game,” and distinguish a one-time setup option from a setting that can be changed at any time.

Prices, discounts, PlayStation Plus inclusion, hardware stock, regional availability, and Accessibility Tag coverage are volatile. Check the current Store page and local hardware availability immediately before purchase. A physical copy of Demon’s Souls does not imply a different difficulty setting from the digital PS5 release; the documented accessibility and challenge expectations come from the game and its settings, not the purchase format.

For most players, the best starting configuration is custom button placement for the actions that cause strain, reduced or disabled haptics when they are uncomfortable, larger or higher-contrast text where supported, mono audio when stereo separation is a barrier, and subtitles that match the game’s actual coverage. Then evaluate difficulty aids title by title instead of treating the Soulslike label as an accessibility specification.
