For U.S. shoppers choosing an 85-inch-class 4K TV, the right pick depends on budget, room brightness, and gaming needs. The current guide’s category leaders are the Hisense QD7 for a lower-cost option, the TCL QM7K as a midrange choice, the Hisense U75QG for gaming, and the Hisense U8QG for bright rooms. These are guide-based recommendations, not results of hands-on testing for this article; prices and availability change, so verify the exact size and model before buying.

Which 85-inch 4K TV fits your priorities?

The recommendations below are drawn from a U.S.-oriented buying guide updated September 24, 2026. They represent different tradeoffs rather than a single winner. Model names, sizes, specifications, prices, and stock can differ by region; confirm the local model number and 85-inch-class size before purchase. Tom’s Guide’s buying guide is the cited editorial source.

Buyer priority Model Why it stands out Tradeoffs
Lower cost Hisense QD7 Accurate-looking color, good upscaling, Dolby Vision support, and audio described as unexpectedly capable. 60Hz refresh, four HDMI 2.0 ports, weaker bright-room performance, and a sluggish Fire TV interface. The guide says it has often been below $1,000, but that is a volatile price snapshot to verify.
Midrange TCL QM7K 4K, 144Hz, Google TV, Dolby Vision and HDR10+, plus strong HDR brightness and color according to the guide. Reflection problems in bright rooms, limited off-angle viewing, two HDMI 2.1 ports, and poor built-in audio.
Gaming Hisense U75QG 4K, 165Hz, Google TV, and four HDMI 2.1 ports. Middling audio, a reflective screen, and limited off-axis viewing. The 165Hz ceiling is more relevant to gaming PCs; consoles top out at 120Hz.
Bright rooms Hisense U8QG The guide recommends it for brightness and glare handling; it lists three HDMI 2.1 ports and 4K 165Hz input. Verify the exact model and panel technology for your region. A cited guide has conflicting panel descriptions, so this article does not identify it as OLED or make an unverified panel claim.

How room conditions change the choice

Daylight, glare, and reflections

For a room with strong daylight or direct reflections, prioritize measured brightness and reflection handling rather than relying on a model’s marketing category. The U8QG is the guide’s bright-room recommendation, while the QM7K and U75QG are noted as reflective. A bright screen cannot eliminate reflections in every setup, so consider where windows and lamps sit relative to the TV.

Dark-room viewing and seating position

In a darker room, contrast and local dimming matter more to perceived picture depth. If viewers sit far to the side, check viewing-angle performance: the QM7K and U75QG are both described as limited off-axis. The available guide does not provide a consistent set of independently measured contrast or brightness values for comparing all four models, so avoid treating the recommendations as a lab ranking.

What to check for gaming

Refresh rate alone does not tell the whole gaming story. Compare the native refresh rate, number of HDMI 2.1 ports, variable refresh support, and independently measured input lag for the exact model and size. The guide lists 144Hz for the QM7K and 165Hz for the U75QG and U8QG; it notes that consoles top out at 120Hz, making higher refresh rates most relevant to compatible gaming PCs. Four HDMI 2.1 ports on the U75QG may also be useful if several newer devices need high-bandwidth connections.

Port counts are not interchangeable: the QD7 has four HDMI 2.0 ports, the QM7K two HDMI 2.1 ports, the U75QG four HDMI 2.1 ports, and the U8QG three HDMI 2.1 ports in the cited guide. Check the manufacturer specification for the regional SKU, since feature sets can vary.

HDR formats, streaming, and built-in sound

HDR support is a compatibility check, not a quality score

The QM7K is listed with Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and the QD7 with Dolby Vision. Format support can determine whether a TV accepts a particular HDR stream, but the label alone does not establish how bright, accurate, or convincing the picture will look. Consider the whole picture performance and the content sources you use.

Smart TV interface and audio

The QD7 uses Fire TV, which the guide describes as sluggish; the QM7K, U75QG, and U8QG are listed with Google TV. Check that your required apps and preferred interface are available on the exact regional version.

Built-in sound varies even among large TVs. The QD7’s audio is described as better than expected, while the QM7K’s is poor and the U75QG’s middling. A soundbar is worth considering if clear dialogue, stronger bass, or a more enveloping movie sound matters to you; it is not a requirement for every buyer.

Check size, model number, price, and availability

“85-inch” is often a size class, not a guarantee that every nearby large-screen model measures 85 inches. Tom’s Guide names the LG B6 as its best overall choice on an 85-inch page but explicitly identifies that television as 83 inches. Treat it as a nearby-size alternative, not an 85-inch pick.

Prices are snapshots, not stable specifications. The guide’s note that the QD7 has often been below $1,000 should not be read as a current offer. Samsung’s U.S. listing for its 85-inch 2026 R95H showed $6,499.99, while a Samsung U.K. page for an 85-inch 2026 model said “No longer available”; those examples illustrate why country, date, and stock must be checked rather than serving as recommendations. For each candidate, confirm the diagonal, full model code, refresh and port specifications, panel description, warranty, and live price on the seller or manufacturer page. A model family name alone may not identify the same TV across countries or screen sizes.

UK TCL models are regional alternatives, not U.S. equivalents

TCL’s U.K. listings include an 85-inch C6K-UK described as QD-Mini LED 4K with 144Hz and up to 512 dimming zones, and an 85-inch Q7C-UK with 144Hz, up to 2,048 zones, and a manufacturer-rated 3,000-nit HDR figure. Buying checklist

  • Confirm that the exact local SKU is in the 85-inch class and has the features you need.
  • Match brightness and reflection handling to the room; consider contrast for darker viewing and viewing angles for side seats.
  • For gaming, verify HDMI 2.1 port count, refresh rate, variable refresh support, and input lag for your devices.
  • Check HDR format support against your content sources without treating format names as a picture-quality rating.
  • Compare current prices and availability for the same size and regional model, not an old review price or a nearby screen size.
  • Assess built-in sound against your expectations before adding a soundbar.
