CSMM (Catalysm’s Server Manager & Monitor) paired with Allocs Server Fixes is the best all-around 7 Days to Die server manager for owners who want a web panel, Discord integration, kits, economy features and a live map. Allocs Server Fixes is a required server-side dependency, not an optional add-on. For a free, self-managed Linux server, LinuxGSM is the strongest command-line choice. Pterodactyl and AMP suit panel-based hosting, while BotMan, ServerTools and Shin Server Tools are better when you only need chat or in-game administration.

This guide compares the main tools by hosting model, feature scope, cost, setup effort and failure points, then gives a practical selection and troubleshooting workflow. Compatibility and pricing can change with game and panel updates, so verify the current release requirements before installing.

Best 7 Days to Die server manager tools at a glance

Tool Best for Interface and scope Cost position Important qualification
CSMM + Allocs Server Fixes Web administration, Discord communities and live-server visibility Web panel, Discord integration, kits, economy, live map and server controls CSMM is listed with a free tier; Allocs is free Allocs Server Fixes must be installed and configured first; setup is more involved than a chat bot
LinuxGSM Owners running their own Linux VPS or dedicated machine Open-source command-line installation, start/stop, updates and service administration Free Requires Linux comfort; a project issue reports a startup problem involving a newer ControlPanel property name
Pterodactyl Containerized hosting with a browser control panel Panel and a 7 Days to Die SteamCMD egg Panel and hosting costs depend on your deployment; not stated for the egg Egg listing support is not the same as a full compatibility guarantee; default ports can conflict
AMP Commercial, proprietary panel users Managed web-panel workflow Paid 7 Days to Die feature details in the available listing require confirmation against current AMP documentation
RAT 5 Windows server owners wanting a graphical manager Windows server-management application Listed as free The available listing gives little technical detail, so check its current release and game-version support
BotMan Discord-first communities Discord chat bot with administrator commands Not stated It is not a full web control panel
ServerTools Simple in-game administration Chat commands for teleports, homes, zones, anti-grief and admin actions Not stated No separate web panel is listed
Shin Server Tools Server-side in-game tools without client mod installation Admin tools added on the server Not stated Players can join without installing a client-side mod, according to its listing

No reliable user-count, market-share or survey statistic is published for these tools, so rankings should be treated as practical recommendations rather than measured market leadership.

What a 7dtd server admin panel should actually do

A “7 Days to Die server manager” can mean three different things. A hosting panel controls the machine and process; a game-management panel exposes player, world and moderation functions; a bot or mod adds commands inside an existing server. Confusing these layers is the main reason administrators install the wrong product.

Host and process management

Host-level tools install the dedicated server, run it as a service, restart it after a crash, expose logs and help with updates. LinuxGSM and panels such as Pterodactyl or AMP belong primarily in this category. They are useful even when you do not need economy, teleport or live-map features.

Game administration

Game-aware tools communicate with 7 Days to Die through its server interfaces or a server mod. They can provide player lists, commands, permissions, kits, economy functions, moderation and map data. CSMM is the broadest option in this group, but it cannot work without the API supplied by Allocs Server Fixes.

Chat and in-game commands

BotMan operates through Discord. ServerTools and Shin Server Tools operate in the game. These options are lighter to deploy when your priority is a short list of commands rather than a dashboard, metrics and a browser-based workflow.

Best overall: CSMM with Allocs Server Fixes

Choose CSMM when several people need to administer a server from a browser or Discord and you want more than start/stop controls. Its listed feature set includes Discord integration, kits, economy functions and a live map, making it the most complete community-management choice in this group.

The dependency that determines whether CSMM works

Allocs Server Fixes is mandatory. It supplies the server API that CSMM uses; installing the panel alone leaves it unable to perform its core game-management functions. Install and test Allocs on the 7 Days to Die server before troubleshooting the panel.

CSMM installation sequence

  1. Confirm the game build and server environment. Record the exact 7 Days to Die version, operating system, server location and whether you use console access or RCON. Compatibility is version-sensitive.
  2. Install Allocs Server Fixes on the server. Follow the current project instructions for the matching game build. Restart the server after installation so the mod and its API load cleanly.
  3. Verify the existing installation. Run the version command from the server console or through RCON and confirm that the expected server-side components respond. A missing response indicates that the dependency or its loading order needs attention before CSMM is configured.
  4. Configure web access. The Catalysm setup documentation identifies permissions in webserver.xml as part of the live-map setup. Apply only the access needed for your panel and keep the server’s web interface off the public internet unless it is protected.
  5. Create and protect the web token. CSMM uses a web token as a password when it talks to the server. Store it in a secret manager or protected configuration, never paste it into a public Discord message, and rotate it if it is exposed.
  6. Connect CSMM and test a low-risk command. Add the server endpoint and token, then test read-only functions such as status or player listing before enabling economy, kits, teleportation or moderation commands.
  7. Set role permissions deliberately. Give helpers only the commands they need. Separate routine player support from destructive actions such as kicks, bans, world changes and configuration edits.

Why CSMM setup feels harder than a bot

You are configuring a server mod, an API, web permissions, a secret token and the panel itself. A Discord bot may be usable after inviting it and assigning a role, while CSMM can fail at any of those integration points. The extra work is justified when you need a persistent dashboard and several administrative features, not when you only need a few chat commands.

CSMM limitations and verification points

Documentation locations and compatibility can change. Use the project’s current documentation for exact package versions and installation order rather than copying an old guide. A comparison site that ranks CSMM highly is operated by a hosting company that sells servers with CSMM preloaded, so treat that ranking as useful context, not independent market evidence.

Best free self-managed Linux option: LinuxGSM

LinuxGSM is the practical choice when you administer your own Linux VPS or dedicated host and prefer shell commands to a graphical panel. It is free and open source, with 7 Days to Die support in the project. It handles the operational layer: installing or updating the server, starting and stopping it, checking status, viewing logs and integrating the process with a normal Linux service workflow.

When LinuxGSM is a better fit than CSMM

  • You are comfortable with SSH, file permissions, firewall rules and service logs.
  • You want to avoid a separate web application and keep the attack surface small.
  • Your main needs are reliable process control, updates and backups rather than kits, economy or a live map.
  • You are hosting on Linux and want a tool that can be scripted alongside monitoring and backup jobs.

LinuxGSM caveat for newer configurations

A project issue reports a startup bug involving a newer ControlPanel property name. That report does not establish that every current installation fails, but it is a reason to check the issue tracker and current script before deploying a production server. If startup fails after an update, compare the generated configuration with the current template, inspect the complete startup log and test with the documented property name for your installed version.

What LinuxGSM does not replace

LinuxGSM does not automatically provide CSMM’s community features. You can run LinuxGSM for process management and add Allocs plus CSMM for game administration, but that creates two systems to secure and maintain. Decide whether the additional panel is worth the operational complexity.

Best panel-based alternatives: Pterodactyl and AMP

Pterodactyl

Pterodactyl has a 7 Days to Die egg that uses SteamCMD. The listing specifies default game ports 26900–26902 and web or telnet-related ports 8080–8082. To import it, an administrator uses Admin Area → Nests → Import Egg and uploads the egg JSON.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The egg’s listing was last updated on 2024-06-14, so do not assume that date represents current game compatibility. The game eggs are maintained in a GitHub repository, and an issue indicates that the egg project may have moved or been forked. Confirm the current repository and inspect the egg before deploying it.

Pterodactyl port and startup troubleshooting

A reported startup failure shows a telnet “Connection refused” error. Another practical hazard is that port 8080 is commonly used by Node.js and other web services. If the container cannot bind its assigned port, identify the process already listening on it, stop or reconfigure that service, or allocate a different host port and update the panel’s allocation. A successful container launch is not proof that the game is reachable; test the actual game, telnet or web endpoint required by your configuration.

AMP

AMP is a paid, proprietary panel for administrators who want a commercial browser interface rather than a collection of shell scripts and mods. The available 7 Days to Die feature claims come from a listing site, not a verified product manual. Before paying, confirm that the current AMP release supports your game version, the exact functions you need, backup and update behavior, Linux or Windows requirements, and whether the license covers the number of instances you plan to run.

Best Windows choice: RAT 5

RAT 5 is listed as a free Windows server manager and has a recent update in the available listing, but that listing supplies little technical detail. It is therefore a reasonable candidate for a Windows host when you want a graphical tool, not a definitive recommendation for every build. Check its current release notes, supported game version, elevation requirements, backup behavior and whether it controls the dedicated server directly or only sends administrative commands.

Best lightweight tools for commands and moderation

BotMan for Discord

BotMan is appropriate when your community already lives in Discord and moderators need command access there. It is a chat bot with administrator commands, not a complete web panel. Confirm which commands are available in the current release, how it authenticates to the game server, whether commands are logged and how Discord roles map to in-game permissions.

ServerTools for in-game administration

ServerTools adds chat commands for teleports, homes, zones, anti-grief functions and administrator actions. It is useful for a small private server where staff are usually playing and do not need a browser dashboard. Because it is an in-game command layer, plan separate host-level backups, restart handling and update procedures.

Shin Server Tools

Shin Server Tools is a server-side mod that adds administrative tools. Its listing specifically says players do not need a client-side mod to join, which reduces friction for a public server. Validate the mod against your current game version and test it on a copy of the world before enabling commands that alter player positions, permissions or protected areas.

How to choose the right 7 Days to Die server manager

  1. Choose the hosting model. Select LinuxGSM for a Linux machine you manage directly, Pterodactyl for a containerized panel workflow, AMP for a paid proprietary panel, or RAT 5 for a Windows-oriented graphical workflow.
  2. List the actions staff actually perform. If they need live-map views, kits, economy and Discord access, start with CSMM. If they only need teleport and anti-grief commands, ServerTools may be sufficient. If all administration happens in Discord, evaluate BotMan first.
  3. Count the people and permission levels. A multi-moderator community benefits from role-based panel permissions. A solo owner may prefer LinuxGSM’s smaller footprint.
  4. Set a maintenance budget. Free software still costs time. CSMM requires Allocs and token management; LinuxGSM requires shell administration; panels require updates, allocations and security hardening. Paid software may reduce setup effort but adds recurring or license costs that must be verified.
  5. Check version compatibility before touching the live world. Record the game build and compare it with the manager, mod or egg’s current support statement. Do not rely on an old tutorial or an unchanged egg listing.
  6. Test recovery, not just installation. Simulate a process crash, a failed update, a lost panel connection and a restore from backup. A manager is valuable only if it helps you recover safely.

A safe operating plan after installation

Separate access layers

Use different credentials for the hosting panel, operating-system account, RCON, web token and Discord bot. Give each moderator the narrowest role that covers their duties. Never reuse the CSMM web token as a player password or publish it in a configuration screenshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up before every risky change

Back up the world, server configuration, permission files, panel configuration and mod settings before a game update, egg change, mod replacement or economy reset. Keep at least one copy outside the game host and periodically perform a real restore test.

Log administrative actions

Enable the panel, bot or server logs available to you. Record who performed bans, teleports, world edits and configuration changes. Logs turn a disputed moderation event or a failed update into a diagnosable incident.

Keep public services narrow

Expose only the game ports and management endpoints required by your chosen architecture. Restrict RCON, panel and web-server access by firewall or private network where possible. A live map or web interface should not be treated as harmless simply because it is read-only.

Troubleshooting by symptom

CSMM connects but shows no players or commands fail

  • Verify Allocs Server Fixes is installed on the same server and matches the game build.
  • Run version through console or RCON and confirm the server-side component responds.
  • Recheck the endpoint, web permissions in webserver.xml and the token.
  • Rotate the token if it may have been copied incorrectly or exposed.
  • Review the current CSMM and Allocs documentation before changing unrelated firewall or game settings.

The panel or container will not start

  • For LinuxGSM, inspect the startup log and compare the ControlPanel property with the current project configuration.
  • For Pterodactyl, confirm the egg JSON imported correctly, SteamCMD completed and the assigned ports are free.
  • For AMP or another commercial panel, check the current product documentation and license or instance limits.

Pterodactyl reports “Connection refused”

Check that the game process is running, the expected telnet or web service is listening, and the panel allocation points to the correct container port. Resolve collisions such as another service using 8080, then test from the host and from an external client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players cannot join after adding a server-side tool

Disable the new mod or egg on a copy of the server, confirm the base game starts, then re-enable the tool with the matching version. Shin Server Tools is listed as not requiring a client-side mod, but that does not remove the need to verify server-version compatibility or configuration.

Bottom line: which tool should you install?

Use CSMM plus Allocs Server Fixes if your definition of a server manager includes a web panel, Discord administration, kits, economy and a live map. Use LinuxGSM if you primarily need dependable, free Linux process management and are comfortable with SSH. Choose Pterodactyl or AMP when a browser-hosting panel is more important than native game features, verifying their current 7 Days to Die support first. Choose RAT 5 for a Windows graphical workflow, and choose BotMan, ServerTools or Shin Server Tools when a focused Discord or in-game command set is all your staff require.
