A 4×6 photo printer needs to support the standard postcard-size print—not merely smaller instant-photo formats such as 2×3 inches or square prints. That combination makes the CP1500 the most defensible general-purpose choice in this group when the goal is ordinary 4×6 prints at home. It is not an independently tested winner: the available comparison does not report controlled print-quality or speed tests. Check the price and availability of compatible paper-and-ribbon supplies alongside the printer itself.
When the Epson PictureMate PM-400 makes more sense
The PM-400 supports borderless 4×6 and 5×7 prints, so it is the more flexible documented option if you want both sizes. Epson lists a 4×6 print speed of as fast as 36 seconds in Default Mode and an approximate yield of 100 4×6 photos per cartridge. It uses Epson cartridges only; Epson also offers a Print Pack containing a cartridge and 100 sheets of 4×6 photo paper. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified results. Review Epson’s PM-400 product specifications and confirm that the printer and supplies are currently available before deciding.

Epson lists a maximum resolution of 5,760 × 1,440 dpi and a minimum ink droplet size of 2 picoliters. Those numbers describe the inkjet system; they do not establish that it produces better-looking photos than the CP1500’s dye-sublimation system. The evidence available here does not include a comparable, independent assessment of print quality between them.
How to choose based on your printing needs
- For a straightforward 4×6 home workflow: Start with the CP1500, whose supported size and connection methods are documented by Canon.
- For occasional 5×7 prints too: Consider the PM-400, while checking stock and cartridge availability first.
- For phone-first printing: Compare the CP1500’s documented Wi-Fi and AirPrint support with the exact app and device compatibility of any docked or phone-oriented alternative. Do not assume support from the product name alone.
- For printing away from an outlet: The CP1500 can use an optional battery, but it is an additional purchase. Verify whether a candidate includes battery power or supports an optional battery before treating it as portable.
- For the lowest ongoing expense: Compare the cost of a compatible paper-and-ribbon or ink pack against its stated yield. The available figures do not establish a current, apples-to-apples cost per print across the shortlist.
What to check before buying
- Confirm the output size. Check the manufacturer’s specification for 4×6-inch or postcard-size support; smaller instant-photo formats are not substitutes.
- Match the printer to your source device. Check whether you will print by Wi-Fi, AirPrint, USB, memory card, or a dedicated phone app, and confirm support for your device.
- Price the supplies, not just the printer. Find the compatible media pack, its price, and its stated yield. Account for the possibility of spoiled prints rather than treating a nominal yield as a guaranteed number of usable photos.
- Check current stock. Availability can change, especially for the PM-400 and the two less-documented alternatives.
- Read the conditions behind longevity claims. Manufacturer longevity figures depend on stated storage or test conditions and are not guarantees for every home.
How to interpret the print-life and speed figures
Canon lists a 100-year print-longevity figure for the CP1500, while Epson lists up to 200 years of album storage longevity for the PM-400. These are manufacturer claims, not promises that every print will last that long regardless of paper, storage, light, or handling. Consult each maker’s full notes and conditions before using the figures to compare expected life.

The PM-400’s “as fast as 36 seconds” figure applies to a 4×6 print in Default Mode, according to Epson. It is a specified best-case speed, not a guarantee for every photo or workflow. The available materials do not provide a directly comparable speed figure for the CP1500.
