Best exact-size choice: the Hisense 40-inch Class A4 Series LED 4K UHD Smart Android TV is the clearest fit when your cabinet, wall space, or viewing setup requires a true 40-inch screen. Best overall picture: the LG OLED evo AI C6 42-inch delivers the contrast, processing and gaming features that true 40-inch sets increasingly lack. If you can accommodate two extra inches, a 42- or 43-inch model usually gives you more advanced panel technology; if 40 inches is a hard limit, verify the Hisense model suffix and local stock before ordering.

Quick verdict: which small 4K TV should you buy?

True 40-inch 4K televisions have become uncommon. Manufacturers have largely shifted their compact large-screen ranges to 42 and 43 inches, so the best answer depends on whether “40-inch” is a strict physical requirement or a rough size preference.

Use case Recommended model Why it fits Important qualification
Exactly 40 inches Hisense 40-inch Class A4 Series LED 4K UHD Smart Android TV One of the few clearly identified true 40-inch 4K options, with an LED panel and Android smart-TV interface. Confirm the regional model suffix, resolution listing, tuner and warranty because specifications and stock vary by country.
Best picture near 40 inches LG OLED evo AI C6 42-inch OLED contrast, deep blacks, advanced processing and modern gaming support in a compact footprint. It measures 42 inches, not 40. LG’s catalog lists the C6 family from 42 to 83 inches.
Lowest-cost smart-TV route Amazon Fire TV 40-inch 2-Series A compact Fire TV interface and a true 40-inch class option are aimed at budget buyers. Check the live regional listing for current resolution, HDR support, ports, price and availability; those details are not stable across markets.

For a bedroom, office or second room, start with the space rather than the badge on the box. Measure the stand or wall, account for bezel width and feet placement, then decide whether a 42-inch screen will actually fit. A slightly larger OLED can be a better long-term purchase than a cheaper 40-inch LED if you care about movie contrast, console gaming or using the set as a monitor.

Why true 40-inch 4K TVs are hard to find

What Hi-Fi?’s 2025/2026 compact-TV guide notes that true 40-inch models are “thin on the ground” because manufacturers have phased many of them out in favor of 42- and 43-inch screens. That change is driven by panel production and product-line economics: 42-inch OLED panels and 43-inch LCD panels now occupy the compact premium and mainstream slots that 40-inch sets once filled.

TOSHIBA 43" Class C350 Series LED 4K UHD Smart Fire TV, Voice Remote with Alexa, Free & Live TV
  • REGZA Engine ZR: REGZA Engine ZR is Toshiba's revolutionary Engine. With the power of precise analyzing technology, it drives the maximum potential of picture quality to reach the resolution of 4K for scenes, to deliver stunning picture quality for breath-tak-ing viewing experience.
  • AI 4K Upscaler: Toshiba's unique Al upscaling technology provides the near-4K level picture quality for Full HD content. Instead of simply replicating every pixel, it intelligently detects the colors of neighboring pixels and decides the proper color of each pixel by considering the detailed texture of the real sight. No matter what the content is, you can enjoy every scene with the amazing clarity of near-4K quality.
  • Dolby Vision*Atmos: Combine Dolby Vision HDR imaging with Dolby Atmos sound to get engaging audio-visual performance, transforming your TV into an entertainment powerhouse with detailed images and acoustics, so as to achieve amazing realism that you'll see, hear, and feel like never before. That is, your truly spectacular home entertainment.
  • Ultimate Motion: Ultimate Motion reduces blur in fast moving scenes, offering crisp and clear images for fast action sequences. Its smooth viewing experience puts you into the scene.
  • Game Mode: Game mode supports many gaming features such as ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and eARC. With the combination of Ultimate Motion, breathtaking reality and excitement make your gaming experience unforgettable.

The result is a split market:

  • Exact 40-inch LED sets are available, but they tend to emphasize price, simple processing and broad smart-platform access rather than flagship brightness or gaming features.
  • 42-inch OLED sets are physically close enough for many rooms while offering far better black levels, motion control and HDMI 2.1 gaming features.
  • 43-inch LCD sets can provide a larger image and sometimes higher brightness, but they need more cabinet width and viewing distance.

Do not assume that a television advertised as “40-inch class” has a 40.0-inch diagonal. Retailers may round measurements, and regional model numbers can change the panel, tuner or operating system. Check the manufacturer specification page and the retailer’s exact model code before paying.

Best exact 40-inch 4K TV: Hisense A4 Series

What makes it the practical exact-size pick

Hisense lists a 40-inch Class A4 Series LED 4K UHD Smart Android TV in its official 4K UHD catalog. It is the most direct match for readers who cannot use a 42- or 43-inch chassis. The combination of a 40-inch diagonal, 3840 × 2160 4K UHD resolution and an Android-based smart interface covers the essentials for streaming, broadcast and console use in a small room.

Its LED panel should be judged as an affordable, conventional LCD design rather than as an OLED substitute. An LED television can be a sensible choice when the room is bright, the viewing angles are predictable and the budget matters more than perfect black levels. In dark movie scenes, however, an entry-level LED normally cannot produce the pixel-level black control of an OLED panel.

Who should choose it

  • Renters or bedroom users with a stand or wall space designed around 40 inches.
  • Buyers who want a 4K image without paying for premium OLED technology.
  • Households already comfortable with Android TV navigation and Google account integration.
  • Viewers who sit close enough to benefit from 4K detail but do not need a very large screen.

Checks to make before ordering

  1. Read the full model number, including the suffix after “A4,” and compare it with the Hisense specification page for your country.
  2. Confirm that the listing explicitly says 4K UHD or 3840 × 2160; do not rely only on a retailer category filter.
  3. Count HDMI inputs and check whether the required input supports the console, soundbar or set-top box you plan to use.
  4. Verify Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, tuner standard, included stand and wall-mount pattern for your region.
  5. Check the warranty provider and return policy. Stock, prices and included features can change between countries and between retailer batches.

The A4 is the sensible answer to a physical-size problem, not an automatic winner on every picture-quality measure. If your room can accept 42 inches and you watch a lot of films or play current consoles, compare its delivered price with the LG C6 before committing.

Best premium near-size choice: LG OLED evo AI C6 42-inch

Why two extra inches can be worth it

TechRadar’s guide, updated August 19, 2026, names the LG OLED evo AI C6 42-inch as its best 40-inch TV for most people, replacing the LG C5. The recommendation reflects the reality that the strongest compact televisions now start at 42 inches. LG’s catalog lists the OLED evo C6 in sizes from 42 to 83 inches, so the 42-inch version is the smallest member of that range.

  • High Dynamic Range: Provides a wide range of color details and sharper contrast, from the brightest whites to the deepest blacks.
  • All-in-one: Get right to your good stuff. With Fire TV, you can enjoy a world of entertainment from apps like Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max. Plus, stream for free with Fire TV Channels, Pluto TV, Tubi, and more. Access over 1.8 million movies and TV episodes. Subscriptions may be required. Feature and content availability may vary.

  • Free Content: Stream for free. Access over 1 million free movies and TV episodes from popular ad-supported streaming apps like Fire TV Channels, Tubi, and Pluto TV. Subscriptions may be required. Feature and content availability may vary.

OLED pixels switch off individually, giving the C6 the type of black level and contrast that an edge-lit or basic LED panel cannot match. That matters in a bedroom or media room where lights are low: subtitles remain legible against dark scenes, stars and highlights stand out, and there is no conventional LCD backlight glow around bright objects. OLED also offers wide viewing angles, useful when the bed or sofa is not directly centered on the screen.

Strengths for gaming

  • Fast pixel response reduces visible smear in moving games.
  • Modern HDMI 2.1 support, 120Hz capability, variable refresh rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) are the features to look for when pairing the TV with a current console or gaming PC.
  • A 42-inch panel is compact enough for a desk or small gaming room while still showing the benefit of 4K detail.

TechRadar’s compact-TV test method evaluates input lag, 4K and HD sources, contrast, black levels, color accuracy, motion handling, HDMI 2.1, 120Hz, VRR and ALLM where supported. Its practical benchmark is that input lag below 20 milliseconds is fine for most people. Treat that as a review-method reference, not a guarantee that every picture mode or regional C6 variant will measure identically.

Trade-offs

  • The screen is 42 inches, so measure before purchase.
  • OLED models generally cost more than entry-level LED TVs.
  • As with any OLED, use the manufacturer’s screen-care guidance and avoid leaving a static desktop or news ticker at maximum brightness for many hours every day.
  • Check the exact HDR formats, stand design, HDMI layout and warranty in your market; regional specifications can differ.

Budget alternative: Amazon Fire TV 40-inch 2-Series

TechRadar identifies the Amazon Fire TV 40-inch 2-Series as a budget compact option. Its main appeal is the Fire TV interface, which puts streaming apps, live-TV sources and connected devices in one familiar home screen.

Because the 2-Series name is used in different regional product lines, confirm the live listing for the exact resolution, HDR capability, refresh rate, HDMI count, tuner and voice-remote contents. The available evidence does not establish one stable specification or price for every country, and retailer promotions can change quickly. Buy it when the current listing meets your requirements, not because an older review or a search snippet shows a particular number.

For a low-cost bedroom TV, prioritize three practical checks: readable menus at your sitting distance, reliable Wi-Fi in the room and enough HDMI inputs for your devices. If you plan to use it as a monitor or with a console, verify chroma handling, game mode and input lag rather than assuming those features from the Fire TV branding alone.

40 inches versus 42 or 43 inches

Factor True 40-inch model 42-inch OLED 43-inch LCD
Physical fit Best when the available width or stand is fixed. Needs a little more width and usually a different stand footprint. Largest of the three; measure cabinet and wall clearance carefully.
Panel choice Most commonly entry-level or mid-range LED. OLED is widely available at this size. Usually LCD/LED, with model-dependent backlight and brightness.
Black level and contrast Depends on the LED backlight; generally limited versus OLED. Per-pixel dimming provides the strongest dark-room contrast. Varies widely; check local-dimming capability and viewing-angle behavior.
Gaming features May be limited to basic game mode and 60Hz; verify every input. More likely to include HDMI 2.1, 120Hz, VRR and ALLM. Ranges from basic 60Hz sets to gaming-capable models.
Typical buying logic Choose when exact dimensions and price come first. Choose when picture quality and gaming matter more than two inches. Choose when you want a larger image and have the room for it.

There is no universal “best” diagonal. A 40-inch TV that fits your furniture is better than a 42-inch set that overhangs a narrow stand or leaves no room for a soundbar. Conversely, if the extra two inches fit comfortably, the broader 42-inch OLED selection can deliver a visibly larger upgrade than the diagonal suggests.

What 4K means at this size

LG defines 4K UHD as 3840 × 2160 pixels. At 40 to 42 inches, that resolution is useful when you sit close enough to resolve the extra detail or use the television for computer text and games. A 4K panel does not automatically make low-quality video look sharp: streaming compression, source resolution and the TV’s upscaling all affect the result.

  • Native 4K: a console, PC or streaming app outputs 3840 × 2160, allowing the panel to show one source pixel per display-pixel block.
  • HD upscaling: the TV expands 720p or 1080p video to the panel’s 4K grid. Processing quality determines whether edges look clean or overly sharpened.
  • HDR: high-dynamic-range video can provide brighter highlights and richer shadow detail, but only when the panel, source and app support the same format.

When comparing two sets, look beyond the “4K” label. Ask which HDR formats are accepted, how bright the panel gets in your room, whether the TV preserves shadow detail and whether game mode disables processing you value.

Viewing distance for a 40-inch 4K TV

LG’s current distance table gives 4.0 feet as a reference for a 40-inch 4K TV. TCL’s general FAQ gives 4.92 feet (1.5 meters) for a 40-inch TV. These are starting points rather than rules: eyesight, content quality, seating height and personal preference all change the comfortable distance.

  • Around 4 feet: maximizes the visible benefit of 4K detail and suits a desk, compact bedroom or close sofa.
  • Around 4.9 feet: is a more relaxed general-purpose distance if you watch mixed broadcast, HD and 4K content.
  • Farther away: the screen will still work, but a 40-inch image may feel small for cinema-style viewing; a 42- or 43-inch model could be more satisfying if it fits.

For a wall installation, mark the screen’s outer dimensions with painter’s tape and sit in your normal position for a few minutes. This catches an overly close or distant layout before you drill holes.

Using a compact 4K TV for gaming

Console checklist

  • Look for a dedicated game mode and measure or verify input lag in that mode.
  • For 120-frame-per-second console gaming, confirm a 120Hz panel and an HDMI input that accepts the required 4K signal.
  • Check VRR support if your console or PC uses adaptive refresh.
  • Confirm ALLM if you want the TV to switch into low-latency mode automatically.
  • Use the correct HDMI cable and connect the console directly to the compatible input before troubleshooting.

Desk-monitor checklist

A 40- or 42-inch 4K screen can function as a large monitor, but size alone does not guarantee a good desktop experience. TCL’s guidance notes that a suitable TV monitor should provide appropriate HDR, HDMI, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features. Also check:

  • Pixel density and scaling: 4K gives a sharper desktop than 1080p, but you may need operating-system scaling for comfortable text.
  • Chroma handling: full 4:4:4 chroma is important for crisp colored text; verify it in the model’s PC mode or documentation.
  • Input lag: use game or PC mode and avoid heavy motion smoothing.
  • Ergonomics: keep the top of the screen near eye level and sit far enough back that you can scan the whole panel without excessive head movement.
  • Burn-in management: vary static windows, use the operating system’s sleep timer and follow the OLED manufacturer’s care recommendations if you choose an OLED.

Smart-TV platforms and app compatibility

LG webOS, Samsung Tizen and Google TV are established smart-TV platforms with broad streaming-app coverage, but platform availability does not mean every app behaves identically on every model. What Hi-Fi? recommends checking apps manually to see whether they output supported picture and sound formats correctly.

Before buying, identify the services your household actually uses and verify four things:

  1. The app is available in your country and on the TV’s operating-system version.
  2. Your subscription tier supports the desired 4K or HDR stream.
  3. The TV passes the service’s audio format to your soundbar or receiver.
  4. You can use an external streaming stick if the built-in app is missing or poorly maintained.

Android TV on the Hisense A4 and Fire TV on the 2-Series offer different home screens, search tools and account ecosystems. Choose the interface that matches your existing devices and remote-control habits rather than assuming one platform is universally faster.

Picture, sound and connection features to compare

Picture quality

  • Panel type: OLED for per-pixel blacks; LED for lower entry cost and potentially higher sustained brightness.
  • Contrast and black uniformity, especially if the TV will be used in a dark room.
  • Color accuracy and grayscale tracking in a cinema or filmmaker picture mode.
  • Motion handling for sports and games; check whether smoothing can be disabled.
  • HDR format support and real-world brightness, not just an HDR logo.

Sound

Small televisions have limited cabinet volume, so built-in speakers can sound thin at higher volume. Listen for clear dialogue at your normal distance and confirm whether the TV supports the audio return connection your soundbar uses. A compact soundbar can improve speech intelligibility, but leave enough shelf or wall clearance for the screen’s feet and remote sensor.

Ports and wireless

Count HDMI inputs before buying. A bedroom setup may need one input for a console and one for a streaming box; a desk setup may add a computer and speakers. Check USB power, optical output, Bluetooth headphone support and Wi-Fi band compatibility if those features matter to your layout.

Price, stock and regional model checks

No stable cross-retailer price or stock table applies to these models. Retail prices are volatile, promotions are region-specific and model suffixes can change the tuner, operating system or included accessories. Treat a displayed price as a snapshot for your country and date, not as a permanent market value.

Use this purchase sequence:

  1. Write down the maximum screen width, depth and stand spacing your room allows.
  2. Choose whether exact 40 inches is mandatory or whether 42 inches is acceptable.
  3. Compare the full model code on the manufacturer site with the retailer listing.
  4. Check resolution, HDR, refresh rate, HDMI features, smart apps and warranty in that same regional listing.
  5. Measure the delivery route and unpacking space; a 42-inch carton is larger than the panel diagonal suggests.
  6. Keep the receipt and photograph the model label in case a warranty claim requires the exact suffix.

Decision guide

Choose the Hisense A4 if…

Your furniture or wall niche is built around 40 inches, you want a straightforward 4K smart TV and you accept entry-level LED contrast in exchange for exact sizing and likely lower cost.

Choose the LG C6 if…

You can fit 42 inches, watch films in a dim room, want OLED black levels or plan to connect a current console or gaming PC. The extra two inches buy access to a more capable compact-TV class.

Choose the Fire TV 2-Series if…

Your priority is a low-cost 40-inch smart-TV interface and the current regional listing confirms the resolution, ports and features you need. Verify those details rather than relying on the product family name.

Wait or widen the search if…

You need a specific HDR format, four or more HDMI devices, a high-refresh panel or professional monitor color accuracy and none of the compact models clearly lists those requirements. A 43-inch LCD or a 42-inch OLED may provide a better feature match than forcing a 40-inch purchase.

Installation checklist for a small room

  • Place the screen so reflections from windows and lamps do not fall directly across dark scenes.
  • Leave ventilation space around the rear and avoid trapping the set tightly inside an unventilated cabinet.
  • Use a level stand or a wall mount rated for the TV’s exact weight and VESA pattern.
  • Connect the TV to the home network before installing every app; update firmware first.
  • Run the console or PC through the HDMI input that supports the desired resolution and refresh rate.
  • Set the picture mode separately for cinema, daytime viewing and gaming so low-latency settings do not compromise movie quality.
  • Enable sleep timers and automatic screen protection when the TV doubles as a desktop display.

Bottom line

For a genuinely 40-inch 4K television, the Hisense A4 Series is the most direct match, provided the regional suffix confirms the specification you need. For most buyers who can accept a slightly larger screen, the 42-inch LG OLED evo AI C6 is the stronger overall choice because compact OLED models now offer the best combination of contrast, processing and gaming capability. The Amazon Fire TV 40-inch 2-Series remains a budget route, but its current regional listing must decide whether its resolution, HDR and connectivity meet your needs.
