The best 360 camera in 2026 depends on what you will do with the footage after recording. Insta360 X6 is the strongest first purchase when its higher price fits your budget, DJI Osmo 360 II is compelling for DJI users who want 8K/60 capture and replaceable lenses, GoPro Max2 is a practical choice for people already invested in GoPro mounts, and Insta360 X4 Air is a lighter, lower-cost candidate that needs a current specification and price check before you commit. Those are reviewer assessments, not a universal ranking.

A 360 camera records a full sphere, then lets you reframe the scene into a conventional horizontal, vertical or square video. Because a flat crop uses only part of that sphere, capture resolution is not the same as the resolution of the final shot. Compare the complete workflow—image quality after reframing, low-light results, lens protection, waterproofing, editing software, accessories, storage and local availability—rather than choosing on an 8K label alone.

Quick picks: which 360 camera should you buy?

Camera Best fit Evidence-based highlights Important qualification
Insta360 X6 Best all-round first purchase when budget allows Up to 8K/50fps 360 video and 120MP stills; TechRadar assesses it as the stronger first-purchase option in its X6 comparison. Confirm your country’s current price and stock. A higher headline resolution does not guarantee an 8K-looking reframed crop.
DJI Osmo 360 II DJI ecosystem users, high-frame-rate capture and easier lens repair Reported 8K/60fps, 120MP photos, 1.1-inch dual sensors, f/1.9 aperture, 105GB internal storage plus microSD, 2-inch OLED screen and 183g weight. TechRadar’s September 3, 2026 review said it was not available in the United States at publication. Availability and launch prices are region-specific.
GoPro Max2 Action users who already own GoPro mounts or want 10-bit video WIRED named it its best 360 camera for most people in its March 2026 guide; it has dual lenses and 10-bit video. Reported mounting support includes standard GoPro fingers, a proprietary quick-release system, a 3/8-inch thread and magnetic attachment. The WIRED result is a dated test judgment. Check the current review, package contents and regional bundle before buying.
Insta360 X4 Air A lighter or potentially lower-cost Insta360 option Included in WIRED’s March 2026 guide after replacing X4. The available evidence does not establish a complete comparative specification or price profile. Verify current official details before treating it as a bargain or a “best” pick.

Use this table as a starting point, then follow the decision sections below. The right answer can change with your country, editing device, mounts and tolerance for lens damage.

What you are actually buying: capture resolution versus reframed output

A 360 camera’s two lenses capture overlapping hemispheres and software stitches them into a spherical image. You can later choose where the viewer looks, which is why a single recording can produce several conventional clips. WIRED describes the typical use as recording everything first and reframing into standard video later (WIRED’s 2026 guide).

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

“8K” describes the dimensions of the complete spherical frame, not a conventional 8K image from one direction. A 16:9 crop occupies only a portion of the sphere, and the stitching area, lens projection and stabilization further affect detail. A vertical crop for a phone uses a different part of the source than a wide landscape crop. When comparing cameras, ask how much detail remains in the final aspect ratio you publish, not just which model has the largest capture number.

  • Full-sphere recording: best when you need to choose the viewpoint later or let an interactive viewer look around.
  • Reframed flat video: easier to share, but the field of view and effective resolution are reduced by the crop.
  • Still photography: maximum megapixels are measured for the entire 360 image; a conventional crop contains fewer pixels.

Plan storage and editing accordingly. High-resolution 360 files are larger than ordinary clips, and reframing may require a phone or computer capable of decoding the source footage smoothly.

Insta360 X6: the safest high-end first purchase

Insta360’s current comparison lists X6 among its X-series models and reports 8K 360 video at up to 50fps (Insta360’s product comparison). TechRadar’s X6 comparison lists 120MP still images and assesses X6 as the stronger first-purchase option if its higher price fits your budget (TechRadar’s X6 comparison). That “stronger” conclusion is the reviewer’s assessment, not a promise that it wins every scene or country’s value calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why choose X6

  • 8K/50fps capture gives you substantial source detail for reframing and supports smoother motion than 8K/30 modes.
  • 120MP 360 stills leave more latitude for crops, virtual-tour views and large displays than lower-resolution capture.
  • It is a straightforward first purchase if you want a mature 360-focused editing workflow and do not already own another camera ecosystem.

What to check before ordering

  • Check the live local price and stock; the comparison evidence does not establish one universal 2026 price.
  • Price the complete kit, including spare batteries, a charger, a compatible invisible/selfie stick, lens guards and a fast memory card if required by your chosen package.
  • Confirm that your phone or computer supports the manufacturer’s current app and can handle 8K files. A powerful camera is less useful if your editing device cannot preview or export reliably.

DJI Osmo 360 II: high frame rate, large storage and replaceable lenses

TechRadar’s review by Sam Kieldsen was published September 3, 2026 and reports a September 15, 2026 launch. It lists 1.1-inch dual sensors, an f/1.9 maximum aperture, 8K/60fps maximum video, 120MP maximum photos, 105GB of internal storage plus microSD, a 2-inch OLED screen and a 183g weight (TechRadar’s DJI Osmo 360 II review).

Price and availability are regional

TechRadar lists launch pricing of £509 for the Standard Combo and AU$921 for the Standard Combo. Those are regional launch figures at the time of that review, not a current global price or a conversion to US dollars. The same review said the camera was not available in the United States at publication. Check your local DJI store and authorized retailers on the date you buy; do not infer US availability or pricing from UK or Australian listings.

Reasons it may suit you

  • 8K/60fps: useful for fast action and for giving reframed clips more source frames, provided your storage and editing hardware can keep up.
  • 105GB internal storage plus microSD: offers built-in space before you add a card, but verify supported card capacities and speed classes in DJI’s current documentation.
  • Replaceable lenses: user replacement can reduce downtime and repair burden after a scratch or impact. It does not make the camera immune to optical damage; replacement parts, alignment and sealing still matter.
  • 10m waterproof rating: the review reports this rating and describes DJI’s changed stance toward underwater use. Follow DJI’s exact depth, time, fresh-water, salt-water, temperature and maintenance limits; waterproof depth alone does not guarantee perfect underwater 360 stitching.
  • DJI ecosystem: existing DJI users may value familiar apps, accessories and integration with other DJI equipment. Confirm compatibility rather than assuming every battery, microphone or mount transfers.

Low-light expectations

TechRadar describes Osmo 360 II as competitive after dark but says the improvement over the previous generation is modest overall. Treat that as a reviewer’s scene-dependent judgment, not a laboratory ranking. Night scenes with moving subjects, bright points of light or uneven exposure can produce different results from a static, well-lit test.

TechRadar’s headline calls the camera “much more affordable than Insta360.” That wording belongs to TechRadar’s September 3, 2026 review and should not be read as a universal price claim, especially where the product is not sold.

GoPro Max2: the action-mounting choice

WIRED’s March 2026 guide names GoPro Max2 its best 360 camera for most people in that guide (WIRED’s dated roundup). The recommendation is a test judgment tied to that guide’s criteria, not an objective winner for every creator.

Why action users may prefer it

  • Dual lenses capture the surrounding scene for later reframing, while 10-bit video provides more tonal precision for color work than 8-bit recording.
  • Tom’s Guide’s surfaced result reports standard GoPro mounting fingers, a proprietary quick-release system, a 3/8-inch thread and magnetic attachment. Verify the current full review and the exact regional kit before relying on any one mount or adapter.
  • If your existing helmet, chest, handlebar or suction setup already uses GoPro-compatible fingers, switching cameras may require fewer new brackets.

Questions to answer before purchase

  • Which Max2 bundle includes the mounts, protective covers, batteries and charging accessories you actually need?
  • Does your editing software preserve 10-bit color through the export format you use for social platforms or client delivery?
  • Are replacement lenses, guards and batteries available in your country, and what is the repair process after an impact?

Do not assume compatibility with every GoPro accessory merely because a mount looks similar. Check thread sizes, quick-release geometry, load limits and whether an accessory blocks a lens or stitching zone.

Insta360 X4 Air: a shortlist candidate, not a proven universal bargain

WIRED updated its guide in March 2026 to include X4 Air and replace X4. The available evidence establishes its editorial inclusion but not a full comparative specification-and-price profile. That makes X4 Air worth investigating if low weight or a lower purchase price is your priority, but it does not support calling it the best camera, the best travel model or the best value without checking current official details.

What to verify

  • Maximum 360 video and still-image specifications, including frame rates at the resolution you intend to use.
  • Weight with the battery and any required protective accessories, not just the bare camera figure.
  • Waterproof rating, lens-protection options, battery runtime and whether lenses are user-replaceable.
  • Current price, bundle contents and availability in your country.
  • App support for your phone and desktop editing workflow.

Compare the cameras by the result you need

For travel and everyday documenting

Choose X6 when you want a high-resolution generalist and can afford its price. Its 8K/50fps and 120MP specifications provide generous source material for reframing, while the broader Insta360 ecosystem may simplify a first-time 360 workflow. Osmo 360 II can be a better practical fit for a DJI owner who values internal storage, a screen and 8K/60, provided it is sold in the region where the trip begins and replacement parts are accessible.

For travel, budget for a slim protective case, lens guards, a short selfie stick, spare power and enough storage for days when you cannot offload files. A 360 camera exposes both lenses to bags, sand and tables; a scratched lens can ruin every angle of a recording.

For action sports

Prioritize mounting security, lens protection, stabilization and recovery after a crash. Max2’s reported GoPro mounting options are attractive when your existing action kit already uses those interfaces. X6 and Osmo 360 II remain candidates when their reframing quality, frame-rate modes or ecosystem fit matter more than mount reuse. Verify waterproof and impact limitations for the exact camera and accessory combination.

For low light and night scenes

Start with the reviewer evidence rather than assuming a sensor-size number settles the result. TechRadar calls Osmo 360 II competitive after dark but says its generational improvement is modest. Scene composition, movement, street lighting, exposure settings and stabilization all influence the final crop. If night quality is critical, compare downloadable sample footage from the current manufacturer or reviewer pages at the aspect ratio you will publish.

For creators who reframe everything

Look for the highest useful source detail, smooth frame rates and an app that makes keyframing intuitive. X6’s reported 8K/50fps and Osmo 360 II’s reported 8K/60fps are starting points, not guarantees of equal reframed sharpness. Test an export to your actual delivery format—vertical short, 16:9 landscape, square post or interactive 360—before committing to a large accessory investment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For interactive 360 viewing

Prioritize stitching consistency, horizon behavior and platform support over a conventional crop’s sharpness. Confirm that your intended video host accepts the camera’s metadata and that your editing application preserves 360 projection information on export.

Durability, waterproofing and repairability

“Waterproof” is a depth-and-condition rating, not a promise that every underwater scene will stitch cleanly. Water changes how lenses see overlapping areas, and bubbles, low contrast and color loss can make seams more visible. DJI Osmo 360 II is reported as waterproof to 10m, but you should follow DJI’s exact limitations and post-use care instructions, especially after salt water or a lens replacement.

Repairability matters because 360 cameras place two exposed lenses at the ends of a small body. Osmo 360 II’s reported user-replaceable lenses can reduce the repair burden after scratches. For every model, find out whether replacement lens covers, guards, batteries and official service are sold locally. A camera that is technically cheaper can cost more after one impact if parts must be imported.

  • Use a lens guard when the manufacturer approves one for your shooting mode; poorly fitted guards can appear in the stitch line.
  • Inspect both lenses before every important shoot. A tiny smear can become a large blurred patch after reframing.
  • Dry and clean the camera exactly as the manufacturer specifies after rain or immersion.
  • Never test waterproofing with an open battery door, loose cover or third-party accessory that changes the seal.

Storage, batteries and accessories that change the real cost

High-resolution 360 recording fills storage quickly. Osmo 360 II’s reported 105GB internal storage plus microSD reduces the need for an immediately inserted card, while other cameras may rely more heavily on removable media. Confirm card speed, maximum capacity and formatting requirements in the current manual for the model you select.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most buyers should price these items alongside the camera:

  • Spare batteries and a charger: essential for long travel days and cold-weather action sessions.
  • Storage: a card with the required sustained write speed, plus a way to back up files while traveling.
  • Selfie stick or extension pole: lets the camera hide the pole in the stitch or gives you a safer distance from moving subjects. Compatibility varies by model.
  • Lens protection: guards or covers can prevent scratches but may affect stitching or image quality if not designed for that camera.
  • Mounts and adapters: verify thread size, quick-release type and load rating. Max2’s reported mounting options do not make every existing accessory universally compatible.
  • Protective case: especially important because both lenses remain vulnerable when the camera is in a backpack.

Existing equipment can outweigh a small specification difference. DJI owners may value integration with their current microphones or mounts; GoPro users may save money by reusing compatible mounting hardware. Check model-specific compatibility before checkout.

A buying checklist for your country and workflow

  1. Define the final output. Decide whether you need interactive 360, 16:9 video, vertical clips, still panoramas or all four.
  2. Set a complete-kit budget. Add batteries, charger, storage, protection, a pole and the mounts required for your activity.
  3. Check local availability on the purchase date. DJI Osmo 360 II had no US availability in TechRadar’s September 3, 2026 review, while UK and Australian launch prices cannot be applied to US buyers.
  4. Match the ecosystem. Consider the app, editing device, microphones, mounts and cameras you already own.
  5. Compare reframed samples. Inspect footage in the aspect ratio you will publish, including motion and low-light scenes.
  6. Confirm repair and consumables. Look for local batteries, lens parts, guards and service options.
  7. Verify the bundle. “Standard” and action bundles can contain different batteries, poles, mounts and cases even when the camera is identical.
  8. Plan file management. Make sure your phone or computer has enough free space and processing power for 8K files and exports.

Prices and historical context

Only regional launch figures are established for Osmo 360 II: £509 and AU$921 for the Standard Combo, reported by TechRadar in 2026. These figures are dated, bundle-specific and may change with taxes, promotions and stock. The US absence noted in that review makes direct currency conversion especially misleading.

Insta360’s X5 launch price was US$549.99 in 2025, according to Insta360’s launch information (Insta360 X5 product page). That is historical context, not a 2026 recommendation or a current X6 price. Check live listings and inventory before publishing or purchasing.

Buying for a country where the camera is not sold

Regional pricing, warranty coverage, taxes and replacement parts can change the real cost. DJI’s US availability was specifically unresolved in the September 2026 review.

Ignoring the stitch line

Mounts, guards, hands and nearby subjects can cross the overlap between lenses. Keep critical details away from the seam and test the exact accessory arrangement.

Underestimating editing time

Recording everything is flexible, but reframing, horizon correction, trimming and exporting take time. Confirm that your app supports the keyframing and delivery formats you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a bundle without checking accessories

Two packages can have different batteries, mounts and protective parts. Compare the contents line by line and verify model compatibility.

Bottom line

For most first-time buyers with the budget, Insta360 X6 is the most defensible all-round recommendation because it combines 8K/50fps capture, 120MP stills and a mature 360 workflow, according to the cited TechRadar assessment. Choose DJI Osmo 360 II instead when 8K/60, 105GB internal storage, DJI integration or user-replaceable lenses matter more—and only after confirming local availability and price. Choose GoPro Max2 when 10-bit video and GoPro-compatible mounting fit your action setup. Treat Insta360 X4 Air as a promising lighter or lower-cost option that still requires a current specification, bundle and price check.
