The best 360 camera depends on what matters most: detail when you reframe footage, low-light quality, durability, mounting flexibility, or an easier editing workflow. Current options include the Insta360 X6, X5 and X4 Air, DJI Osmo 360, and GoPro MAX2. Reviewers disagree on a single winner, so match the camera to how you plan to shoot and edit.

What makes a 360 camera different?

A 360 camera records the scene around it, letting you choose the angle later. You can reframe the panorama into conventional horizontal or vertical video rather than having to point the camera precisely while recording. That flexibility is especially useful for travel and action footage, but the final crop has less detail than the full 360 source. Higher source resolution can help preserve detail in the reframed clip, although an “8K” label alone does not guarantee that two cameras will deliver the same result.

Resolution and frame rate are only part of the decision. Also consider low-light performance, single-lens recording, audio, stabilization, mounting, lens protection, water resistance, and how demanding the editing process will be on your phone or computer.

Which camera suits your priorities?

For the most flexible high-resolution capture

The Insta360 X6 and DJI Osmo 360 both have manufacturer-listed 8K panoramic or 360 modes up to 50 fps. The X6’s listed options extend to 4K at up to 120 fps, while DJI lists 4K up to 100 fps. Choose by the specific resolution and frame rate you expect to use, not just the highest headline number. Neither spec sheet by itself establishes which camera produces the better-looking reframed clip.

For low light

WIRED recommends the Insta360 X5 as its low-light pick, and TechRadar also discusses the X5 favorably. Treat this as review-based guidance rather than a guarantee for every scene: low-light results depend on conditions and settings, so look at sample footage that resembles your intended use.

For a first 360 camera

WIRED labels Insta360 X4 Air its beginner pick. That is a useful starting point if you are new to the format, but consider the editing workflow as well as the camera itself: you will need to select a view from the 360 recording and export a conventional clip.

For mounts and lens-cover serviceability

WIRED highlights GoPro MAX2’s multiple mounting interfaces and user-replaceable, twist-off lens covers. Those features can matter if you mount a camera in varied positions or expect lens covers to take wear. Confirm the exact mount standard and camera-specific accessories before buying; compatibility should not be assumed from a general claim of mount versatility.

Check video modes before buying

The headline resolution is not the whole story. A camera may offer different frame rates at different resolutions, and the frame rate you choose can affect which mode is available. The manufacturer-published options below are useful for comparing the X6 and Osmo 360, but they are not independent image-quality tests.

Model Manufacturer-listed 360 or panoramic video modes Other relevant information
Insta360 X6 8K at 50, 48, 30, 25, or 24 fps; 6K up to 60 fps; 4K up to 120 fps Insta360 lists dual customized square sensors, a 1/1.1-inch square sensor size, and replaceable lenses. Insta360
DJI Osmo 360 8K up to 50 fps; 6K up to 60 fps; 4K up to 100 fps DJI lists a 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensor and panoramic stills up to 120 MP. It also lists single-lens video modes. DJI

Do not infer that matching sensor-size figures or resolution labels mean matching results. For a conventional 16:9 or vertical deliverable, judge the image after reframing, not only the full panorama.

Account for editing, sound, and durability

Editing and hardware

360 footage requires a reframing step if you want a regular flat video. TechRadar flags large-file editing demands for the X5 and the demands of its editing app. If you expect to edit on a phone, check that your device and preferred workflow can handle high-resolution files before choosing a camera; desktop editing may suit people who want more control over framing and exports.

Audio

Audio needs vary: ambient travel footage, action clips, and speech-led recordings place different demands on built-in microphones and accessories. WIRED names Osmo 360 its best pick for audio accessories, while its discussion of the field notes audio trade-offs. If clear speech is essential, check what recording and accessory setup is supported for the exact camera rather than assuming built-in audio will be adequate.

Lens protection and water resistance

Lens covers and replaceable lenses affect both day-to-day handling and the consequences of damage. WIRED reports that MAX2 has twist-off, user-replaceable lens covers. TechRadar reports that X5 has replaceable lenses and describes it as waterproof to 15 m; treat that depth as TechRadar’s stated review-guide specification and check current manufacturer conditions before using a camera underwater. A water-resistance rating does not establish that every accessory or operating condition is covered.

Should an Insta360 X4 owner upgrade?

Do not assume that a newer camera automatically justifies replacing a working one. TechRadar explicitly describes the upgrade benefit from X4 to X5 as limited for existing X4 owners. Compare the feature you would actually gain—such as a shooting mode, low-light performance, or lens serviceability—with the cost and disruption of changing your workflow. The evidence here does not establish that every X4 owner will benefit from an upgrade.

What the battery figures do—and do not—tell you

DJI lists up to 100 minutes of 8K/30 panoramic recording for Osmo 360, or up to 120 minutes with Endurance mode, under its specified laboratory conditions. DJI cautions that actual runtime can differ by scenario and region, so do not treat either figure as a guaranteed outing-length estimate. TechRadar’s 2026 guide gives the X5 a 208-minute battery-life figure, but that is the guide’s reported figure and should not be treated as directly comparable to DJI’s lab-conditioned 8K/30 result without matching test conditions.

How to make the final choice

  1. Decide how you will use the footage. If you want to reframe action or travel clips after recording, prioritize the quality of the crop and the export workflow.
  2. Choose the modes you actually need. Compare resolution and frame rate together; a high-resolution mode may not offer the frame rate you want.
  3. Check the practical details. Consider low-light use, audio needs, available mounts, lens-cover or lens replacement, and any water-resistance conditions relevant to your plans.
  4. Make sure you can edit the files. Confirm that your phone or computer and preferred editing process can handle the files you expect to create.
  5. Verify current price and availability locally. Prices, bundles, stock, and rankings change. The available source material does not establish a live price for a specific market.

For reviewer-led shortcuts, WIRED’s March 2026 roundup favors MAX2 for most people, X5 for low light, X4 Air for beginners, and Osmo 360 for audio accessories. TechRadar’s July 27, 2026 guide favors X5 overall in its 360-action-camera category. These are distinct editorial verdicts, not a shared test or objective ranking.
