For easy 360-degree panoramic stills, the best camera depends on how you plan to capture and finish the image: Insta360 X5 offers the highest listed spherical still resolution here, Ricoh THETA X pairs a touchscreen with a real-estate-focused HDR workflow, and Ricoh THETA Z1 prioritizes a larger sensor and RAW editing flexibility for low-light work.

Each captures the full sphere in one shot, but a 360-photo megapixel figure describes the entire spherical image—not the detail in a conventional forward-facing photo. There is no controlled head-to-head still-image test among these models in the cited sources, so treat published resolution as a specification and independent comments as review findings.

How to choose a 360 camera for still photos

Start with the finished image and your workflow, not the largest megapixel number. A 360 camera records the full surroundings at once; the resulting sphere is then viewed by panning around it or embedded in a platform that supports spherical photos.

  • Choose for resolution if you want more pixels across the spherical output and an integrated app or desktop export path.
  • Choose for on-camera operation if you need a touchscreen and a camera positioned for property or virtual-tour capture.
  • Choose for low-light editing control if sensor size and RAW/DNG processing matter more than maximum listed still resolution.

Before buying, check how the camera handles seams and leveling, how quickly you can trigger and transfer images, its battery performance, and whether the destination site or tour platform accepts spherical photos. The available sources do not establish a controlled comparison of those factors across all three cameras.

Insta360 X5: highest listed spherical still resolution

Insta360 specifies approximately 72MP at 11904 × 5952, as well as an approximately 18MP still option. Those are whole-sphere output figures, not a promise of detail equivalent to a conventional 72MP photo. Its supported INSP and DNG formats and exports through the mobile app or Studio desktop software give buyers phone- and computer-based workflow options. Confirm that your phone or computer and the current software support the workflow you intend to use.

Storage is a practical requirement: Insta360 calls for a UHS-I microSD card rated V30 or higher. Check the current product documentation for supported capacity and compatibility before choosing a card. See Insta360’s X5 specifications.

Digital Camera World’s guide, published August 25, 2026, lists the THETA X at 60.5MP and reports visible stitching lines and short battery life as drawbacks. Those are the guide’s review observations, not controlled comparative measurements. Ricoh’s 60MP figure and the guide’s 60.5MP figure are differently stated specifications; do not treat the small difference as proof of a meaningful real-world advantage. Ricoh THETA Z1: RAW flexibility for low light

The THETA Z1 has the lowest listed still resolution among these choices—23MP according to RICOH360—but uses a 1-inch CMOS sensor. Ricoh identifies that sensor as a strength for low-light use. This makes the Z1 a better match for buyers who value the capture and editing process over maximizing spherical output resolution.

The Z1 can save RAW (DNG) plus JPEG or JPEG alone. Ricoh also offers a free THETA Stitcher plug-in for Lightroom Classic, which creates spherical images from developed RAW files. That route adds a desktop processing step, but gives an editing-oriented photographer more control than a JPEG-only workflow. Check Ricoh’s current software requirements before relying on a particular Lightroom Classic setup. Ricoh THETA Z1 features.

What to check before you buy

  • Output and destination: Verify that the platform where you will publish accepts spherical images. A panorama viewer or virtual-tour service may handle the same file differently from a standard photo gallery.
  • Seams and leveling: Stitching lines can show where the camera joins the views from its lenses. The available cited evidence specifically flags visible seams as a THETA X review finding; it does not provide standardized seam tests across all three models.
  • Lighting: If you expect dim interiors, Ricoh positions the Z1’s 1-inch sensor for low light. Compare actual sample files in your intended conditions when possible; the cited sources do not provide a controlled low-light comparison.
  • Editing time: Decide whether you want phone-app or Studio desktop export, as with X5, or a RAW-to-Lightroom Classic stitching workflow, as with Z1.
  • Power and storage: Digital Camera World reports short battery life as a THETA X drawback. For X5, meet Insta360’s UHS-I V30-or-higher storage requirement and verify current capacity compatibility.
