There is no 36-inch television in the current mainstream manufacturer lineups reviewed for this guide. The practical choices are a 32-inch set for the tightest spaces, a 40-inch model when a little more width is available, or a 42- or 43-inch television if your cabinet or wall can accommodate it. That conclusion describes the lineups checked, not every television ever sold worldwide.
Buy by measuring the television’s actual exterior dimensions—not by diagonal size alone. Bezels, stand placement, cable clearance and wall-mount position can determine whether a “larger” screen fits where an older 36-inch CRT once stood.
Is there a 36-inch TV?
A 36-inch television is not shown in the current mainstream ranges reviewed from Roku, TCL UK or Panasonic’s U.S. announcement. Roku’s current Select Series HD table lists 24-, 32- and 40-inch sizes, while its Select Series 4K range starts at 43 inches. TCL UK groups its compact televisions under 32–39 inches and describes 32–40-inch sets as suitable for smaller rooms. Panasonic’s August 18, 2026 U.S. lineup announcement names a 32-inch S65C.
Those are current lineup examples, not proof that no retailer or specialist manufacturer anywhere carries a 36-inch model. In practice, a search for “36-inch TV” usually reflects a required maximum width or a replacement for an older television. A measured comparison between 32, 40, 42 and 43 inches will produce more usable results than insisting on an exact diagonal.

Use the table to shortlist sizes, then compare specific model sheets. A size category is not a product recommendation: two 40-inch televisions can have different bezel widths, feet positions, depths, operating systems and ports.
Measure the space before choosing a screen
Diagonal measurements run from one corner of the visible panel to the opposite corner. They do not include the bezel, chassis, feet or the space needed for cables. Measure the installation area in three dimensions and write down the smallest usable values.
- Measure clear width. Measure between the cabinet sides or the wall limits at the narrowest point. If the television sits inside a recess, measure at the front and rear; some recesses taper.
- Measure clear height. Include any shelf above the television and leave room to lift the set into position. A television that technically fits can be impossible to install if it cannot be tilted through the opening.
- Measure depth. Include the rear chassis, power plug, HDMI connectors and a bend radius for cables. A wall-mounted television needs space for the bracket and for ventilation behind the panel.
- Check the stand footprint. Feet may sit near the corners or close together. Confirm both the total stand width and the depth of each foot against the shelf, not just the panel width.
- Record viewing position. Measure from the intended eye position to the screen surface. This distance affects whether extra resolution or a larger diagonal will be useful.
- Reserve ventilation and service access. Do not press a television tightly against a wall or cabinet if the manual requires clearance. Leave access to the power switch, HDMI ports and any removable stand screws.
Which? notes that slimmer bezels can let a larger modern panel occupy a space previously used by a smaller television. That is why an old 36-inch CRT opening may accept a 40- or 42-inch flat panel, but only a model-specific dimension check can confirm it.

How much larger are the alternatives?
For a 16:9 panel, the active image is approximately 70.9 cm wide at 32 inches, 88.6 cm at 40 inches, 93.0 cm at 42 inches and 95.2 cm at 43 inches. These are geometry estimates for the picture area; bezels, chassis and stands add to the exterior dimensions. Use them to understand the scale difference, never as a substitute for the manufacturer’s drawing.
When 32 inches is the safer fit
Choose 32 inches when the measured width is tight, the viewing distance is short, or the television is going into a bedroom, kitchen or office. It is the most consistently represented compact size in the lineups reviewed. Roku confirms a 32-inch Select Series HD option, and Panasonic announced a 32-inch S65C for the U.S. market in 2026.

Do not assume every 32-inch model is Full HD, 4K, smart or compatible with the same broadcast standard. Check the SKU’s resolution, tuner, operating system, HDMI count, USB features and supplied stand. A “32-inch” search result can mix several model years and countries.
When 40 inches is the useful step up
A 40-inch television adds a noticeably larger picture without moving all the way to the 43-inch class. Roku lists 40 inches in its Select Series HD range. This is a size to investigate when a 32-inch screen feels too small but the available shelf is not wide enough for a typical 43-inch chassis.
Confirm the television’s real width and foot spacing. Some 40-inch models use wide-set feet that require nearly the full shelf width, while others use a central pedestal or support a VESA wall mount.
When 42 or 43 inches is realistic
A 42- or 43-inch television may fit an opening that once held a 36-inch CRT because modern panels have thin bezels and a different aspect ratio. TechRadar lists an LG OLED42C6 at 42 inches with 3840 × 2160 resolution, an OLED panel, webOS 26 and listed dimensions of 932 × 540 × 40.6 mm. Treat those figures as the specification for that listed model, not a universal 42-inch measurement, and verify whether the retailer’s dimensions include the stand.
Roku’s Select Series 4K begins at 43 inches, so 43 inches is the smallest size in that cited 4K range. A 43-inch set can be an excellent choice when the measured width, viewing distance and budget allow it, but it is not a drop-in replacement for every 36-inch cabinet.

Match resolution to viewing distance
Resolution is most useful when considered with distance and screen size. Which? places a Full-HD 32-inch television and a 4K 40-inch television at about the same viewing distance—around 2.5 metres—in its size guidance. That is the publication’s rule of thumb, not a guarantee for every viewer, eyesight or seating arrangement.

- Short distance: A 32-inch screen can look comfortable and sharp without dominating a desk or bedroom.
- About 2.5 metres: Compare Full HD at 32 inches with 4K at 40 inches as Which? suggests, then consider your eyesight and the content you watch.
- Longer distance: A 40–43-inch screen may be easier to see, while the visible benefit of 4K depends on content quality and your ability to resolve fine detail.
Roku’s cited Select Series HD sizes use 720p/1080p labels, while its 4K line starts at 43 inches. Other manufacturers use different panel resolutions at the same diagonal, so read the exact specification rather than inferring it from the size.
Compare the features that size listings hide
Smart operating system and apps
Verify the operating system and the apps available in your country. A television may be marketed as smart but have a different app catalogue, update policy or account requirement from another model in the same series. Roku’s support information warns that Roku-powered televisions made by other manufacturers should be researched through those manufacturers, so do not transfer features from a series table to an unverified model.
Inputs, tuners and external devices
Count the HDMI inputs you actually need: a streaming box, games console, soundbar, disc player or computer can quickly use all available ports. Check whether the set has the HDMI features your devices require, such as audio return, variable refresh rate or a particular 4K signal format. Confirm the terrestrial, cable or satellite tuner standard for your country; a model imported from another region may not receive local broadcasts.
HDR, audio and mounting
HDR support varies by model and does not guarantee high brightness or a premium picture. Read the panel specification and supported formats. Small televisions often have limited built-in speaker output, so check for optical or HDMI audio return if you plan to add a soundbar.

For wall mounting, verify the VESA pattern, screw size, bracket weight rating and cable direction. A mount can make a 42-inch television fit where its stand would not, but the wall must safely support the combined bracket and television weight.

32-inch Roku Select Series HD
Roku confirms a 32-inch size in its current Select Series HD lineup. Use “32-inch Roku Select Series HD” as a search phrase, then open the local product page and check the exact SKU, resolution, exterior dimensions, feet, tuner, ports, warranty and stock. Roku’s lineup confirmation does not establish one universal price or a single specification for every market.
40-inch Roku Select Series HD
The same Roku table includes a 40-inch Select Series HD option. It is a sensible size to investigate when the measured opening accepts more than 32 inches but less than many 43-inch models. Compare the model sheet with your shelf and cable path before ordering.
Panasonic 32-inch S65C in the U.S.
Panasonic’s August 18, 2026 U.S. announcement names a 32-inch S65C. The announcement establishes the size and market context; it does not make the television available in every country or provide a universal price. Check the current U.S. specification and retailer warranty if this model is on your shortlist.
42-inch OLED example
TechRadar’s 2026 40–43-inch coverage lists the LG OLED42C6 with a 3840 × 2160 panel, OLED technology, webOS 26 and dimensions of 932 × 540 × 40.6 mm. Those are useful reference points for what a contemporary 42-inch television can offer. They are not a hands-on test result for every unit, and the exact model sheet should take priority over a guide listing.

Why old 36-inch televisions are different
Exact 36-inch televisions did exist, especially large CRT models. Sony’s Trinitron/WEGA families included nominal 36-inch products such as the KV-36XBR800. Sony ended Trinitron production in Japan in 2004 and in the United States in 2006, so these are historical examples rather than realistic new smart-TV choices.
A CRT’s nominal diagonal, cabinet depth and weight also make direct comparisons misleading. A modern 40- or 42-inch flat panel can have a larger visible image while being far shallower and lighter, but the stand, wall structure and cable route still need checking.
A purchase checklist for a constrained space
- Write down the maximum width, height and depth in millimetres or centimetres.
- Allow for stand width, stand depth, cable plugs and ventilation.
- Decide whether the television will sit on a stand or use a wall bracket.
- Choose the diagonal that fits those measurements: 32 inches first, then 40, 42 or 43 if clearance remains.
- Match resolution to your seating distance; use the approximately 2.5-metre comparison only as a starting point.
- Confirm the exact SKU’s panel type, resolution, HDR support, tuner and smart platform.
- Count HDMI inputs and check audio outputs for your planned devices.
- Verify local stock, warranty coverage, return conditions and regional broadcast compatibility.
- Read the installation diagram for stand position and mounting holes, not only the headline diagonal.
- Re-measure the route from the delivery entrance to the installation point.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating 36 inches as a standard current size
Fix: Search the adjacent 32-, 40-, 42- and 43-inch classes, then filter by maximum exterior width. Current mainstream listings reviewed for this guide do not show a 36-inch size.

Fix: Measure the cabinet opening and the new television’s chassis, feet and connectors. A thin bezel may create extra room, but a wide-set stand can still fail the fit.
Mistake: assuming every model in a series has the same features
Fix: Check the full model number. Resolution, tuner, HDMI features, app support and dimensions can change by size, region and model year.
Mistake: importing a recommendation from another country
Fix: Use the local manufacturer page and retailer listing. The Panasonic example is a U.S. announcement, while TCL’s size categories are from the UK; neither establishes availability or pricing elsewhere.
Mistake: choosing 4K without considering distance
Fix: Measure the seating position and consider whether your content and eyesight make the extra resolution useful. The approximately 2.5-metre comparison from Which? is guidance, not a universal viewing rule.

Decision guide: which size should you buy?
- If the opening is very narrow or the television is for a desk or bedroom: start with a 32-inch model and verify its exact width and feet.
- If a 32-inch picture is too small and the opening allows roughly 40 inches: investigate a 40-inch model, including the Roku Select Series HD size confirmed in current listings.
- If you have enough width for about 93–95 cm of panel and want 4K: compare specific 42- and 43-inch models, including the cited LG OLED42C6 and Roku’s 43-inch Select Series 4K class.
- If you are replacing a vintage 36-inch CRT: do not search only by diagonal. Compare the old cabinet opening, the new television’s exterior dimensions, stand or mount requirements and the route into the room.
The best replacement for a “36-inch TV” is therefore the largest current model that fits your measured space and meets your resolution, smart-TV, connection and warranty requirements. In most homes that means a carefully measured 32-inch or 40-inch television, with 42 or 43 inches possible when the installation area allows it.
