The best 3-in-1 printer is the one that matches your workload, not a single model that suits everyone. Occasional home and student printing usually favors an affordable cartridge inkjet; regular color graphics and photos can justify a refillable ink tank; frequent, text-heavy office work is often better served by a laser all-in-one. Decide how much you print, what you print, and how you scan before comparing models.

This guide explains the trade-offs, then maps current 2026 recommendations to specific buyers. Model examples are attributed to the published roundups cited below; no hands-on test results are provided here. Prices, regional versions, availability, included supplies, and software can change, so verify the listing and manufacturer specifications immediately before purchase.

What “3-in-1” means

A 3-in-1 all-in-one printer combines three functions in one machine:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Print: produces documents, graphics, and (on suitable inkjet models) photos.
  • Scan: converts paper documents or images into digital files.
  • Copy: makes a duplicate directly from the scanner, without a separate computer.

Some machines add fax and are marketed as 4-in-1. If fax matters to your work, confirm whether it is built into the printer with a phone-line connection or supplied through an app or software feature. A listing that says “all-in-one” does not, by itself, prove that fax is included.

Choose by the work you actually do

Occasional documents and school assignments

If you print a few pages at a time, your priorities are a reasonable purchase price, simple wireless or USB connectivity, compact size, and supplies that will not dry out or become inconvenient between jobs. A cartridge inkjet is a natural starting point for this workload because it can handle ordinary text and color pages without the higher commitment of an office-oriented machine. The budget recommendations from TechRadar and RTINGS are aimed at this type of buyer.

Do not choose solely on the printer’s sale price. A low entry price does not establish a low lifetime cost; check the replacement cartridge prices and published yields for the exact regional model.

Regular color graphics and photos

Inkjet technology generally suits color graphics and photos better than laser, although results still vary by model and paper. A refillable ink-tank machine can be attractive when you print color regularly because its design is intended to reduce the frequency of cartridge replacement. Compare the tank’s included ink, replacement bottle prices, and model-specific yields before assuming it will be cheaper for you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Photo-focused buyers should also check the supported paper sizes, borderless or photo-paper options listed by the manufacturer, and the physical space needed for the printer and paper. Those details are model-specific rather than guaranteed by the word “inkjet.”

Frequent paperwork for a home office

For contracts, invoices, forms, and other text-heavy jobs, laser all-in-ones are typically the stronger category fit because they are designed around fast document production. A color laser can add business graphics without switching to inkjet, while a monochrome laser concentrates on black text. The Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw is the color-laser example discussed in RTINGS’ 2026 comparison.

For sustained work, examine the automatic document feeder (ADF), two-sided printing, scanning workflow, paper capacity, and replacement toner costs. A machine that is quick to print but awkward to load or scan can still slow down an office.

Inkjet, refillable tank, or laser?

Printer category Usually fits What to check before buying
Cartridge inkjet Occasional home or student documents; mixed text and color Cartridge price and yield, replacement frequency, photo and paper support, wireless options, and whether the workload is too high for the model
Refillable ink tank Regular color pages, graphics, and photos where frequent cartridge changes are inconvenient Included ink, bottle prices, model-specific yields, spill-resistant filling design, duplex printing, and the printer’s footprint
Laser all-in-one Frequent, text-heavy document work and faster office-style queues Black or color requirement, toner costs, ADF capacity, duplex scanning, paper capacity, supported paper sizes, and network administration features

These are category-level tendencies, not guarantees. A particular inkjet may be faster or more efficient than a particular laser for a specific job, and photo output depends on the design, driver, paper, and settings. Use independent testing and the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model when those details affect your decision.

Calculate the ongoing cost without guessing

Printer ownership has two distinct costs: the hardware and the consumables. The second can dominate if you print regularly. Cartridge ink, refill bottles, and toner differ in price, capacity, and replacement interval, so a purchase price alone cannot tell you which machine is economical.

  1. Estimate how many black-and-white and color pages you print in a typical month.
  2. Separate occasional peaks, such as a school project, from your normal workload.
  3. Find the manufacturer’s yield for the exact model and supply size sold in your country.
  4. Record the current price of each replacement cartridge, bottle, or toner set.
  5. Compare the likely replacement frequency with the space and maintenance the machine requires.

No confirmed, model-specific cost-per-page figures were published in the 2026 coverage cited below for the examples below, so this guide does not invent one. Recheck current yields and supply prices at the time of purchase, especially when a retailer bundles a starter supply or a promotion.

Features that matter in a real workflow

Automatic document feeder

An ADF lets you place multiple pages together instead of lifting the scanner lid for every sheet. Its capacity matters when you scan or copy contracts, receipts, or school packets. A higher-capacity feeder is useful only if the rest of the workflow can keep up, so check whether the model also supports duplex scanning.

Duplex printing and duplex scanning

Duplex printing puts content on both sides of a sheet and can reduce paper use. Duplex scanning captures both sides of a two-sided original with less manual handling. These are separate capabilities: a printer may offer one without the other. Confirm both in the specification sheet if two-sided documents are routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paper capacity and sizes

Look at the input tray capacity and whether the printer has a separate multipurpose or photo feed. Match supported sizes to your work, such as standard office sheets, envelopes, or larger paper for graphics. A compact machine may fit a shelf but require more frequent reloading.

Connectivity

Check the connections you will actually use: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, or a combination. Wireless setup can be convenient for a household with several devices; Ethernet can be preferable for a fixed office desk. Also confirm compatibility with the computers and mobile devices that will send jobs to the printer.

Footprint and access

Measure the shelf or desk, including room for trays to extend and the scanner lid or ADF to open. Leave access to ink or toner doors and paper paths. A printer that technically fits but cannot be opened fully is a poor fit.

Fax

Do not pay for a 4-in-1 model merely because it is labeled “professional.” If your work requires fax, verify the implementation and connection requirements. If it does not, a 3-in-1 can be simpler and may occupy less space.

Why the Epson EcoTank ET-4950 appears as an overall pick

TechRadar’s August 2026 roundup names the Epson EcoTank ET-4950 its overall all-in-one pick and describes it as an ink-tank 4-in-1. The roundup says it impressed the reviewer with print quality, speed, included ink, and features. TechRadar’s senior printer editor wrote, "I can’t find another mid-price printer so loaded with features and ink." That is the editor’s opinion and should be weighed against your own volume, fax requirement, desk space, and local consumable prices.

When the HP Envy 6555e is the sensible budget choice

TechRadar presents the HP Envy 6555e as a budget 3-in-1 for casual home or student printing. Its stated limitation is sustained business use, so it belongs on a shortlist for light workloads rather than as a default office purchase. Check cartridge costs before deciding that its lower entry price is the better value.

How RTINGS’ alternatives divide the field

RTINGS identifies the Brother MFC-J1360DW as a budget home-use all-in-one option. It discusses the HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e as a mid-range alternative with a more capable scanner, which makes the scanner and ADF specification especially important for users who digitize multi-page documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTINGS also compares the Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw as a color laser all-in-one against an ink-tank alternative. That comparison is useful when your decision is fundamentally about laser document handling versus tank-based color running costs, rather than simply about brand or appearance.

A practical buying process

  1. Write down your print mix. Estimate the share of text, color graphics, photos, and copies. If text dominates, begin with laser candidates; if color and photos dominate, begin with inkjet or tank candidates.
  2. Classify your volume. “Occasional” and “regular” lead to different supply economics. Do not select a business-oriented machine for a few pages a month unless its workflow features justify the extra cost and space.
  3. Decide whether fax is real requirement. If not, focus on 3-in-1 models. If yes, verify built-in fax hardware or the documented app/software method.
  4. Set a scanning standard. For multi-page work, require an ADF and check its capacity. For two-sided originals, require duplex scanning rather than assuming the printer’s duplex-printing feature covers it.
  5. Check the physical installation. Measure the printer with trays and lids open, then confirm supported paper sizes and the location of power and network connections.
  6. Price the supplies. Use current, model-specific yields and prices. Include both black and color supplies if you print color, and account for how often you expect to replace them.
  7. Compare independent coverage with the listing. A roundup recommendation is a useful starting point, but confirm the exact model, test conditions, regional version, and current firmware or software requirements.
  8. Buy only after verifying availability. Model names and suffixes can differ by country, and a retailer may display an older or differently configured version.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing a universal “best” pick: A model praised for photos may be wrong for a text-heavy office, while an office laser may be excessive for a student who prints occasionally. Start with workload.
  • Confusing a low purchase price with low ownership cost: Check cartridge or toner replacement prices and yields before committing.
  • Assuming all all-in-ones scan the same way: A flatbed-only machine, a small ADF, and a duplex-capable ADF create very different document workflows.
  • Assuming duplex printing means duplex scanning: Verify the two features separately.
  • Ignoring paper and workspace: Supported sizes, tray capacity, and clearance for the scanner lid can matter more than a small difference in headline specifications.
  • Buying a 4-in-1 without a fax plan: Fax hardware or software can add complexity you never use.
  • Trusting an old listing: Prices, availability, included ink, regional suffixes, and software support change. Check the date and the exact model at checkout.
  • Overstating category advantages: Inkjet is generally better suited to photos and color graphics, and laser is generally stronger for fast, text-heavy work; neither rule replaces model-level evidence.

Should you buy an inkjet or laser all-in-one printer?

Buy an inkjet all-in-one when color graphics or photos are important and your volume is occasional to regular. Consider a refillable ink tank when you print color often enough that cartridge replacement is a recurring nuisance and the model’s current bottle prices and yields support the economics.

Buy a laser all-in-one when most of your work is text-heavy, queues are frequent, and fast document handling matters. Choose a color laser if color is necessary; otherwise, a monochrome model may be the more focused option. In either case, compare the ADF, duplex scanning, paper capacity, connectivity, footprint, and supply costs rather than choosing by technology label alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision checklist

  • My normal monthly volume is documented, including occasional peaks.
  • I know whether text, color graphics, or photos are the dominant output.
  • I have compared current, model-specific cartridge, bottle, or toner prices and yields.
  • The printer has the ADF capacity and duplex-scanning behavior my documents require.
  • It supports my paper sizes, connection method, and available desk space.
  • I have confirmed whether fax is built in, software-based, or unnecessary.
  • I checked the exact regional model, current availability, included supplies, and publication date of any recommendation.

There is no single best 3-in-1 printer for every buyer. Match the technology and workflow features to the pages you actually produce, then verify the current model and supply economics before paying.
