For most individual investors, Berkshire Hathaway Class B (BRK.B) is the practical default: it represents the same proportional economic interest as Class A (BRK.A) while allowing much smaller purchases. Class A is mainly for investors who want the most voting power per share, already own A, or value the one-way ability to convert A into 1,500 B shares. Neither class is inherently a better claim on Berkshire’s operating businesses; the decision is about denomination, voting rights, conversion flexibility and trade execution.
BRK.A and BRK.B at a glance
| Feature | Class A (BRK.A) | Class B (BRK.B) |
|---|---|---|
| Economic participation | Reference share | 1/1,500 of Class A’s dividend and distribution rights |
| Voting power | One vote per share | 1/10,000 of a Class A share’s voting power per share |
| Conversion | One A may be converted into 1,500 B shares at the holder’s option | Cannot be converted into Class A |
| Exchange ticker | BRK.A on the New York Stock Exchange | BRK.B on the New York Stock Exchange |
| Shares outstanding | 511,820 as of January 31, 2026 | 1,389,605,139 as of January 31, 2026 |
The economic-rights and voting figures above come from Berkshire Hathaway’s 2025 Form 10-K. The share counts are a dated snapshot, not a permanent total; repurchases, conversions or other corporate actions can change them.
What an investor actually owns
Both classes are equity in the same Berkshire Hathaway corporation. Berkshire’s insurance operations, railroad, utilities and energy businesses, manufacturing and service companies, investments, cash and liabilities are not divided into separate operating portfolios for A and B holders. The classes are different legal denominations of the same underlying company.

Consequently, an investor holding the economic equivalent of one A share through B owns 1,500 B shares, before considering brokerage costs or a temporary market-price difference between the tickers.

That ratio is the right starting point for comparing returns. If Berkshire’s per-share intrinsic value or market quotation rises by a given percentage, a properly sized position in either class should experience approximately the same percentage change. The dollar change per individual share will differ because the share denominations differ. A holder of one B share does not receive the same dollar gain as a holder of one A share; a holder of the economic equivalent in B shares does.
Voting rights: important in principle, limited for most small accounts
Class A has one vote per share. Each Class B share has one ten-thousandth of the voting power of a Class A share. Berkshire generally has the two classes vote together as one class, except where Delaware corporate law requires a separate class vote.
Those rights make an A share far more powerful on a per-share basis. They do not automatically give a small A holder practical control over Berkshire. Meaningful influence depends on the number of shares held relative to the entire voting base and on the matters submitted to shareholders. A person buying a single A share obtains the maximum available per-share vote, but still owns a very small fraction of a company with a large shareholder base.

For most investors, voting is therefore a preference rather than an investment thesis. Choose A for the principle of having the strongest vote attached to each share or for a very large holding where voting weight is a deliberate objective. Do not pay for an A denomination solely on the assumption that one share guarantees meaningful control.
Conversion works in one direction
A Class A holder may elect to convert one A share into 1,500 B shares. The conversion is designed for flexibility: an owner can break a large-denomination holding into smaller units for gifts, estate planning, charitable transfers or sales without first selling the entire A position. The election is optional; an A holder can keep the original share.
Class B cannot be converted into Class A. Buying 1,500 B shares does not create a contractual right to receive one A share. This asymmetry matters if you expect to build a position gradually and later want the option to consolidate it into A. That option exists only if you own A first (or acquire A directly), subject to the procedures and account rules applicable at the time.

Conversion is not a mechanism for creating extra Berkshire exposure. It changes the share count and denomination while preserving the stated proportional economic interest. Before converting, check how your broker handles the request, whether it supports the registration in which your shares are held, how fractional or odd lots are treated, and whether any transfer or administrative charges apply. Those operational details can vary and are not fixed by the 10-K.
Why Class B is usually easier to size
Class A’s high denomination means a single-share purchase can commit a large amount of capital. That may be acceptable for an investor with substantial assets who wants a concentrated position, but it is awkward for someone investing a fixed amount each month, rebalancing a diversified portfolio or keeping every position below a target percentage.
Class B divides the same economic exposure into much smaller units. You can select a position size closer to your intended allocation, add money in stages and trim part of a holding without selling an entire A share. The practical advantage is precision, not a superior claim on Berkshire’s businesses.
Use an allocation formula instead of a ticker preference
Start with the dollar value you want invested in Berkshire and divide it by your total portfolio value to determine the target percentage. Then select the class whose per-share denomination lets you get closest to that target without relying on an unverified fractional-share feature.
- Set a target allocation, such as a maximum percentage of your portfolio, based on your own risk plan.
- Check the current quote for both BRK.A and BRK.B immediately before placing an order; prices change continuously.
- Compare the cost of the desired A position with the cost of the corresponding B position using the filing’s economic ratio.
- Choose the lot size that keeps your purchase within the target allocation and leaves room for future contributions or rebalancing.
- Recheck the resulting percentage after execution because market movements can move Berkshire above or below the target.
Do not substitute a live quote from an old article for the price shown by your broker. The relationship between the classes is structural, while the market prices and their short-term spread are not.
Are the returns the same?
On a proportional basis, the classes are intended to track the same Berkshire economics. If you compare one A share with 1,500 B shares, the expected percentage return before costs should be broadly aligned because both represent the same proportional claim.

Individual quotes can diverge temporarily. The market may price each ticker a little above or below the exact economic relationship because of order flow, different investor preferences, bid-ask spreads and the cost of trading. A conversion mechanism helps sophisticated participants keep large discrepancies from persisting indefinitely, but it does not promise that the two quotes match at every instant.
Your realized result can also differ because of execution price, commissions or other account charges, taxes, currency conversion for non-U.S. investors and the timing of purchases. Those items arise from your transaction and jurisdiction, not from a different operating return earned by Berkshire’s A and B classes.
Execution, liquidity and order choice
Both tickers trade on the New York Stock Exchange, but the best implementation still depends on the live market. Before submitting an order, inspect the displayed bid, ask, recent volume and the size available at the quoted prices for the class you intend to buy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When to prefer a limit order
A limit order lets you specify the highest price you will pay (or the lowest price you will accept when selling). It can be useful when the spread is wider than expected, when you are comparing the classes for a large order or when the exact economic relationship matters to your allocation. A limit order may not fill, especially if the market moves away from your price.
When a market order may be reasonable
A market order prioritizes execution over price certainty. It may be suitable for a small, highly liquid order during normal market hours, but the fill can occur at a less favorable price than the last trade displayed. Review the quote and order type your brokerage presents; do not assume the last traded price is the price you will receive.
Check the spread at the time of purchase
There is no permanent rule that A must trade at a particular premium or discount to the proportional B value. Compare the live prices, the estimated dollar difference after multiplying or dividing by the economic ratio, and the cost of your order. For a small investor, a tiny discrepancy may be less important than the ability to buy the desired amount. For a large order, execution quality can matter more.

Which class fits common investor situations?
Building a position with regular contributions
Class B is usually the better implementation because recurring deposits rarely equal the cost of one A share. B lets you invest each contribution without waiting to accumulate a very large cash balance. If your broker offers fractional trading, verify the feature specifically for BRK.B, your account type and your jurisdiction; availability is not universal and can change.

Class B generally fits a modest portfolio because one A share could overwhelm the desired Berkshire allocation. Buying B in a lot that matches your plan helps preserve diversification and leaves cash for other holdings.
Holding enough capital for a concentrated position
Class A can be reasonable when the purchase size is comfortable, the investor values the stronger per-share vote and there is no need to split the position. The decision should still be based on portfolio concentration and risk capacity, not on the prestige of the ticker.
Already owning Class A
An existing A holder has a flexibility that a B holder lacks: part of the position can be converted into B when smaller sale or transfer units are useful. Review the tax and account consequences with a qualified professional before acting; the conversion rule itself does not determine your personal tax result.
Wanting to maximize voting influence per dollar
Class A supplies far more votes per share, but the relevant comparison is votes relative to the dollars invested. Because A and B represent different denominations, calculate the voting power and cost of the actual position you would hold. A preference for voting rights may justify A, but it does not automatically make A a better financial investment.

How to buy the appropriate class
- Confirm the ticker. Select BRK.A for Class A or BRK.B for Class B. Read the full security name in the order ticket so a similarly named instrument is not selected accidentally.
- Review account eligibility. Confirm that your brokerage account, retirement wrapper or local market access permits the selected U.S.-listed security. Rules differ by country, account type and provider.
- Check the live quote. Note the current bid, ask, trading hours and any currency conversion shown by the platform. Do not rely on a historical price in a comparison article.
- Choose the lot size. Calculate the dollar value and resulting portfolio percentage before entering the order. Use the proportional relationship only to compare equivalent A and B exposure.
- Select an order type. Use a limit order when price control is more important than immediate execution; use a market order only when you accept the execution uncertainty.
- Verify the confirmation. Check ticker, class, number of shares, estimated value, fees and settlement information before submitting.
- Record the basis and allocation. Keep the trade confirmation and update your portfolio records so later rebalancing and tax reporting use the correct class and acquisition details.
Costs, taxes and account rules require a local check
The share-class filing establishes rights, not your personal after-tax outcome. Brokerage commissions, regulatory charges, foreign-exchange costs, custody fees, withholding treatment and capital-gains rules depend on your provider, country, account type and transaction. Fractional-share policies also differ: some platforms do not offer fractions, some restrict voting or transfers for fractional positions, and some support only selected securities.

Before trading, read the current fee schedule and the account’s corporate-action procedures. If you are converting A to B, transferring shares, donating them or moving them between account registrations, ask how the event is recorded and whether it creates reporting obligations. A tax adviser can address your circumstances; a general comparison of BRK.A and BRK.B cannot predict them.
Berkshire’s owner-partner framework
Berkshire’s Owner’s Manual describes shareholders as owner-partners and states a long-term objective of maximizing the average annual rate of gain in intrinsic business value per share. That framing explains why the company emphasizes per-share economics rather than encouraging short-term trading between the classes.
Warren E. Buffett wrote in the Owner’s Manual: “Charlie and I hope that you do not think of yourself as merely owning a piece of paper whose price wiggles around daily and that is a candidate for sale when some economic or political event makes you nervous.” The passage is a statement of shareholder orientation, not a promise that Berkshire’s market price will rise on any particular schedule.
Recommended Free Tools
Use that philosophy as context, not as a substitute for due diligence. The class choice cannot remove Berkshire-specific risks, including changes in operating results, insurance losses, investment values, succession, regulation, interest rates or overall market valuation. Decide first whether Berkshire belongs in your portfolio; decide between A and B only after that question is settled.
A decision checklist
- Do you need to invest an amount smaller than one Class A share?
- Will regular contributions or rebalancing require precise position sizing?
- Do you specifically value the maximum per-share voting power?
- Could you benefit from converting a large holding into smaller units later?
- Have you checked live prices, spreads, trading volume and order execution for both tickers?
- Have you confirmed brokerage, jurisdiction, tax and fractional-share rules for your account?
- Does the resulting Berkshire allocation fit your diversification and risk plan?
If the first two questions describe you, Class B is normally the practical answer. If voting power or the A-to-B conversion option is central and the denomination fits your portfolio, Class A can be appropriate. In either case, the investment exposure is proportional to the number of economic units you own, not the letter attached to the ticker.
