Raven Bluff, a helicopter-accessible archaeological site in northwestern Alaska, is giving researchers a detailed look at human activity in eastern Beringia during the Late Pleistocene. The “base camp” was a modern field camp used by archaeologists from 2009 through 2012—not an ancient settlement—but excavations around it recovered stone-working debris, animal bones and a possible early northern fluted point.
Raven Bluff is an archaeological site, not an ancient base camp
Raven Bluff lies in the Kivalina River drainage, about 100 miles north of Kotzebue. The site occupies an eroded limestone bluff between the De Long Mountains and a tundra plain extending toward the Chukchi Sea. The Bureau of Land Management says it can be reached only by helicopter.
Because of that isolation, each excavation season required helicopters to bring personnel, equipment and supplies to a temporary modern camp. That camp supported archaeological work; it was not a house or campsite built by Ice Age people. BLM reports excavation seasons from 2009 through 2012.
BLM describes human use of the bluff as nearly 13,000 years old. That site-specific wording should not be confused with the broader regional evidence for people in Alaska and Yukon around 14,000 years ago.

What archaeologists found at Raven Bluff
A dense record of stone manufacture
Across partly unvegetated ground, archaeologists found a near-continuous scatter of stone artifacts and the flakes produced when tools were made or repaired. Additional material was preserved in a relatively thick accumulation of soil. Together, the surface and buried remains show that people repeatedly used the bluff rather than leaving a single isolated object.
Animal bones preserve evidence of subsistence
Raven Bluff also contains an unusually well-preserved assemblage of animal bones. Identifying the species and measuring their abundance can show which animals people brought to the site and the relative importance of different resources. The evidence can establish broad subsistence patterns, but the available description does not provide a complete species-by-species menu for Raven Bluff.

A rare northern fluted point
BLM identifies what may be North America’s earliest northern fluted point at Raven Bluff. Fluting—removing a channel from the base of a projectile point—is a distinctive spear-point technology central to debates about the first peoples of the continent. The wording “may be” matters: the find is important evidence, but it is not presented as an uncontested record.

The National Park Service defines Beringia as a region of more than 4 million square miles bounded by the Lena River, the Mackenzie River, 72 degrees north latitude and the tip of Kamchatka. During the Last Glacial Maximum, sea level was as much as 300 feet lower than today, exposing land between Asia and North America.

This was not a narrow strip of land. It was a tundra landscape more than 1,000 miles from north to south, with open grassland and parkland in many areas before forests became established. Mammoths, mastodons, scimitar cats, Arctic camels, brown bears, moose, muskox and horses moved across it, alongside birds, fish and marine mammals. The first flooding of the land bridge began around 10,000 years ago as climate warmed and sea level rose.
The National Park Service places the first definitive archaeological evidence for people in interior Alaska and Yukon at about 14,000 years ago. Raven Bluff belongs to this wider eastern-Beringian story, even though BLM describes its own human use as nearly 13,000 years old.

How evidence turns into a picture of daily life
- Context and layers: Surface scatters and artifacts sealed in soil show where activity occurred and whether use was repeated over time.
- Stone technology: Finished tools, flakes and manufacturing debris reveal how people produced, maintained and transported equipment. The possible fluted point is especially useful for comparing Raven Bluff with other early sites.
- Faunal analysis: Species identification and counts from the bone assemblage indicate the animals available to, and used by, the site’s occupants.
- Independent comparisons: Other eastern-Beringian sites provide better-preserved evidence for particular activities, but those observations must remain comparisons rather than be assigned automatically to Raven Bluff.
- Environmental records: Climate and hydrology reconstructions establish the landscapes and seasons in which movement and settlement were possible, without proving a specific migration route.
Raven Bluff and Swan Point: what the comparison shows
Swan Point in central Alaska offers a closely dated comparison for interpreting life in eastern Beringia. Alaska’s Office of History and Archaeology places its Beringian Period at roughly 14,500 to 13,000 calibrated years before present. Phase 1 at Swan Point dates to 14,200–13,800 calibrated years before present.

Swan Point therefore helps make the archaeological record tangible: people made and repaired tools, hunted large mammals, gathered birds and small mammals, and sometimes burned bone when conventional fuel was scarce. Those activities should not be described as direct Raven Bluff discoveries unless Raven Bluff-specific analyses establish them.

Climate context for early movement into Alaska
A 2018 study in Royal Society Open Science reconstructed temperature and hydrology in the southern Bering Land Bridge. It found that the earliest unequivocal human dispersals into Alaska corresponded with warmer, wetter conditions from 14,700 to 13,500 years ago, during the early Bølling–Allerød interstadial.
That timing helps explain why changing water, vegetation and animal distributions matter when archaeologists model movement through Beringia. It does not date Raven Bluff itself, and it does not demonstrate that all early populations followed one route.
What remains unknown
The finds can identify activity areas, technologies and broad subsistence choices, but they do not reconstruct every part of daily life. The cited Raven Bluff evidence does not establish the form of houses, the size of residential groups, the length of individual stays, exact cooking methods or a complete seasonal round. Those questions require additional site-specific stratigraphic, faunal and environmental analyses.
What is established is more focused and more useful: people used this remote Alaskan bluff in the Late Pleistocene, made and maintained stone tools there, relied on animals whose remains survived unusually well, and may have used a fluted-point technology that reaches far back in northern North America. Set against Beringia’s enormous tundra landscape and the warmer, wetter interval associated with early Alaskan dispersals, Raven Bluff provides a grounded view of how archaeologists connect artifacts and bones to human behavior without turning limited evidence into a complete story.
