Short answer: Bending Spoons describes itself as a long-term owner and operator of established digital products. It buys consumer and creator apps, applies shared technology and small, specialized teams, and keeps the businesses rather than planning to sell them on. IAC (now also known as People Incorporated) uses a broader build, scale and spinout model, while Prosus combines operating businesses with a large, geographically diversified investment portfolio. For users, an acquisition can bring faster product work or new pricing and staffing decisions, so the buyer’s operating model matters as much as the purchase announcement.
What Bending Spoons’ acquisition strategy is
Long-term ownership instead of a planned resale
Bending Spoons says it has acquired digital products since 2014 “not to sell on, but to own and operate for the long term.” That statement is the clearest dividing line between its model and an owner whose normal path is to build a business, separate it into a public company or sell it after a period of growth. Long-term ownership does not guarantee that every product will remain unchanged; it means the stated plan is to keep operating the product and compound its value over time.
The company also says transformations can be deep. Its rationale is that a new owner can combine proprietary technology, product expertise and capital to accelerate innovation, improve the customer experience and strengthen the business. In practice, that can mean a redesigned app, infrastructure work, a different subscription structure or a new free tier rather than a light-touch change of ownership.

Bending Spoons presents its organization as a group of small, talent-dense teams supported by shared technology and operating capabilities. The model is concentrated: products remain recognizable brands, but engineering, data, monetization and other functions can benefit from methods developed across the portfolio. This is different from treating every acquired company as a fully independent subsidiary.

The scale is substantial. Bending Spoons reported more than 1 billion registered users, more than 400 million monthly active users and more than 7 million monthly paying customers in 2026. Those figures describe the combined portfolio, not the audience of any one app.
Which consumer apps Bending Spoons has acquired
The portfolio spans productivity, communities, photo and video, file transfer, creator tools and outdoor navigation. The dates below are the acquisition dates listed by Bending Spoons for the named products.

A 2026 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission also identifies Splice as a video-editing app. The filing says Evernote, Meetup, Remini, Splice, StreamYard and WeTransfer were the businesses contributing the most revenue in the fourth quarter of 2024; together they represented more than 60% of revenue for that quarter. That is a revenue concentration measure for the period specified, not a ranking of user numbers.

Evernote: a mature productivity product
Evernote announced on November 16, 2022 that Bending Spoons had agreed to acquire the company. The announcement described approximately $100 million in recurring revenue, millions of paying customers and almost 11 billion notes. It also quoted Bending Spoons chief executive Luca Ferrari saying the company’s mission was to make an enduring positive impact on customers, teammates and society.
Evernote illustrates why Bending Spoons targets established products. A service with a large archive, paying base and long operating history offers both a substantial improvement opportunity and substantial continuity obligations. Users care about search, synchronization, export and access to old data at least as much as they care about new features.

Meetup: a community product with a pricing decision
Meetup’s January 8, 2024 announcement said Bending Spoons had entered an agreement on January 5 to become its new owner. Ferrari described Meetup as having a powerful global brand, a large and vibrant user base and a mission that fit Bending Spoons’ goals.
Meetup also demonstrates that post-acquisition work can affect the economics of participation. Bending Spoons says it introduced a free plan for organizers for the first time since 2005. That is a company-reported product and pricing change; it does not by itself establish whether every organizer paid less or whether the plan had identical limits in every market.
What changed after acquisition?
Company-reported product outcomes
Bending Spoons publishes several examples of work it attributes to its ownership and operation:
- More than 200 Evernote features and improvements were delivered.
- Evernote synchronization speed increased by up to three times.
- Remini monthly active users grew by more than five times.
- A WeTransfer feature recovered more than 3 million expired transfers.
- Meetup gained a free organizer plan, its first such plan since 2005.
These are the owner’s reported results. They are useful indicators of the changes Bending Spoons wants readers to notice, but they are not independent audits or controlled comparisons. “Up to three times,” for example, describes the upper end of the improvement claim rather than a guaranteed speed for every account, device or network. Likewise, growth in Remini monthly active users does not reveal how much came from product changes, marketing, seasonality or changes in measurement.

- Core reliability: Does synchronization, upload, playback or search work at least as well as before?
- Data continuity: Can users export notes, media, routes, event information or files in a usable format?
- Pricing: Have subscription prices, storage limits, organizer fees or feature gates changed?
- Free access: Did a free tier expand, shrink or acquire new restrictions?
- Support: Are billing and account problems answered through the same channels and within a reasonable time?
- Privacy: Has the privacy notice changed, and does the new owner explain how account data is used?
Bending Spoons compared with IAC (People Incorporated)
Different ownership horizons
IAC’s company history describes a broad consumer-internet approach: identify shifts in consumer behavior, build and scale category-leading businesses and allocate capital with discipline. Its history lists more than 200 companies owned or operated, including Expedia, Match Group, Ticketmaster, Vimeo and Angi. IAC has also created public companies through spinouts.

That history makes IAC a broader holding-company and company-building model than Bending Spoons’ stated plan to keep acquired digital products for the long term. An IAC business can be operated for years, but a spinout or other separation is a recognized path. Bending Spoons’ public description places more emphasis on retaining and operating the product inside its group.
Operating control and autonomy
Bending Spoons emphasizes shared proprietary technology and small, centralized teams. IAC’s portfolio history covers businesses that have operated as substantial companies in their own categories, sometimes with their own public-company identities. The practical question is therefore not which parent is “better,” but how much central control an individual app receives after closing and how much authority remains with its existing management.
How a user should interpret the difference
With Bending Spoons, expect the possibility of a deliberate product transformation and cross-portfolio operating practices. With IAC, evaluate the specific subsidiary’s leadership, business plan and ownership path, because the parent has used both long-term operation and separation into independent companies. Neither description predicts a particular price change or staffing decision for an individual service.
Bending Spoons compared with Prosus
A global investment and operating group
Prosus describes a strategy built around large total-addressable-market businesses enabled by software. Its portfolio includes iFood, OLX and Stack Overflow, alongside other investments and operating companies. That makes Prosus a useful comparator for geographic reach, marketplace economics, minority investments and diversification rather than a like-for-like single-app operator.

Marketplaces such as food delivery and classifieds earn revenue through mechanisms such as transaction fees, advertising or other participation economics. A productivity subscription, photo-enhancement app or file-transfer service has a different cost structure and customer relationship. Comparing the parents therefore requires attention to the business model, not just the number of users.
Geography and portfolio risk
Prosus’ global portfolio exposes it to multiple regions, currencies, regulations and consumer markets. Bending Spoons’ reported user totals are also global, but its public operating story is more concentrated around a set of identifiable digital products. A regional regulatory change or marketplace downturn can affect Prosus differently from a subscription-app portfolio, while a major reliability or pricing decision can have an outsized effect on one Bending Spoons product’s community.

The available evidence does not establish a single staffing pattern for every acquisition, so claims about layoffs, retention or office closures should be checked against the specific company and date.

- Which roles become shared across multiple products?
- How are compensation, benefits, location and reporting lines changing?
- What commitments are being made about support, security and data operations?
- Is the product’s roadmap measured by users, paid conversion, revenue, reliability or another target?
What users should do when their app is acquired
1. Record the current state
Save invoices, renewal dates, account identifiers and important exports before major changes arrive. For a notes or file service, download a representative sample and confirm that attachments, metadata and sharing links remain usable. For a community or navigation service, preserve event history, routes and other information that may be difficult to recreate.
2. Read the first post-acquisition notices
Look for changes to the terms of service, privacy notice, subscription price, storage allowance, organizer fee, cancellation process and data-retention policy. The acquisition announcement usually explains ownership; the service’s account and billing notices explain what changes for you.
3. Test the functions you actually depend on
Check synchronization across two devices, export and restore, login recovery, sharing, search, uploads and cancellation. A headline feature launch is less important than whether the workflow you use every week remains dependable.
4. Keep a fallback for irreplaceable data
Maintain an independent copy of notes, photographs, videos, documents, routes or community records that you cannot afford to lose. This is sensible for any cloud service, regardless of the owner.
5. Reassess the price against the new limits
Compare what you receive—not just the monthly amount—with the previous plan. A lower price can still be less valuable if storage, export, collaboration or organizer limits have changed; a higher price may be justified if reliability and capabilities improve for your use case.
How to judge whether a Bending Spoons acquisition is working

IAC/People Incorporated is the better comparison when the question is how a diversified consumer-internet company builds, scales and sometimes spins out businesses. Prosus is the better comparison for a global investment and operating group whose portfolio includes large marketplaces and minority or diversified holdings. For any individual app, the decisive evidence remains specific: release quality, pricing, data portability, support, privacy and the treatment of the people who use and maintain the product.
