Short answer: Bendigo Bank-arranged Contents Standard may suit an owner-occupier in a strata home who needs cover for personal belongings, but it is not a substitute for the building or strata scheme’s insurance. The bank’s online summary lists cover for events including theft, vandalism, flood, storm and fire, and says qualifying owner-occupiers may receive reasonable temporary accommodation after a covered event. The applicable PDS and your Certificate of Insurance determine the actual terms, limits and exclusions.

What Contents Standard is described as covering
The bank describes contents as household belongings such as furniture, jewellery, televisions, laptops, carpets and curtains. Its online summary lists theft and vandalism, flood, storm and storm surge, and fire among the events covered. Those are summary-level descriptions: policy definitions, conditions, limits and exclusions are set out in the relevant PDS and schedule.

For an apartment owner, the key distinction is between belongings and the building or fixtures. The accessible summary does not establish whether a particular fitted appliance, floor, improvement or other fixture in an owner-occupied strata lot is covered. Check both your own policy documents and the strata scheme’s insurance documents rather than assuming either policy covers a specific item.

Bendigo Bank says CGU covers reasonable temporary accommodation costs after a covered event if you own and live in a home that is part of a strata or similar scheme. This is conditional: additional limits, exclusions and conditions apply. The summary does not justify treating accommodation as unlimited or extending the statement to renters, landlords or every policy schedule.

How to decide whether it fits your strata home
- Identify the policy wording that applies. Use the purchase date and disclosure index to find the applicable PDS, then match it to your Certificate of Insurance.
- Separate your belongings from the building. For a disputed fixture or improvement, check the wording and ask the strata manager or insurer how the scheme’s building policy treats it.
- Check the cover level and optional benefits. Compare Standard and Plus, then confirm whether accidental damage, portable contents and valuable contents are included or selected.
- Match limits to the items you need to insure. Review category and per-item limits, including any items that must be separately listed.
- Check special situations in advance. If you plan to store belongings, confirm acceptance before the move; for temporary accommodation, check the conditions and limits for your policy.
- Review the quote and schedule. Confirm premium, excess, exclusions, eligibility and the insured amounts for your circumstances before buying or renewing.
What is not established by the online summary
The accessible summary does not resolve detailed exclusions, excesses, treatment of fixtures in an owner-occupied strata lot or customer-specific terms. The current PDS is linked from Bendigo Bank’s disclosure index, but CGU’s linked endpoint was not accessible in the materials available for this review. An older CGU Fundamentals PDS should not be treated as the current wording for a policy purchased on or after 23 June 2025. Use the applicable PDS and Certificate of Insurance for definitive terms.
