Bendigo Bank’s Building and Contents Plus combines cover for a home and its household contents. Its standout advertised feature is up to two years of temporary accommodation if a covered event makes the home unliveable. Whether the policy suits you depends on the exact policy wording, insured amounts, excesses and exclusions—not just the headline benefits.
What this review covers—and which policy version applies
Bendigo Bank distributes the insurance, but Insurance Australia Limited issues it under the CGU brand. Bendigo offers combined Building and Contents, Building-only and Contents-only cover, with Standard and Plus levels described on its product page. This review focuses on the combined Building and Contents Plus option.
The current disclosure index identifies documents for policies purchased on or after 23 June 2025. If your policy began before that date, it may use earlier Gold, Silver or Basic Bronze terms. Check your purchase or renewal date and use the matching policy documents rather than assuming today’s descriptions apply.

What Building and Contents Plus advertises
Bendigo’s current product summary lists cover categories and benefits including theft and vandalism, flood, storm and storm surge, fire, rebuilding, emergency repairs, temporary accommodation, visitors’ belongings and liability. It also describes optional benefits such as accidental damage, valuable contents, motor burnout and portable contents. Confirm which benefits are included in the selected tier and which require an option on your quote or policy.

Water cover needs a close read
Bendigo says flood cover is automatically included and lists flood, storm and storm surge in its summary. It also excludes actions of the sea, such as tides and waves. “Flood cover” therefore should not be read as covering every water-related event: identify the cause of damage and compare it with the policy’s definitions and exclusions before relying on the headline.
Where contents limits and optional cover matter
Valuables and portable items
The baseline valuable-contents limit applies in aggregate to works of art, collections, jewellery and watches. If those items exceed the stated amount, check whether the additional Valuable contents benefit is available and ensure the relevant items and amounts are recorded as required by the policy.

Portable items require the optional Portable contents benefit. Bendigo describes cover for loss, theft and accidental damage, but lists exclusions and limits: examples include scratches or dents, items being cleaned or repaired, some equipment while in use, and bicycles during competitive racing or time trials. Geographic restrictions also apply outside Australia or New Zealand. Check the exact item threshold, exclusions and conditions against how you use and travel with each item.
Contents in storage
General contents in storage may be covered only if CGU is told before the move and its acceptance criteria are met. Valuable contents are not covered while stored, according to Bendigo’s summary. Contact the insurer before placing belongings in storage and confirm the decision in writing.

How to decide whether the policy fits your household
Do not judge a home policy from the premium alone. A useful comparison starts with the same home details and the same cover choices for every quote. For this policy, check:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Building sum insured: Is the amount appropriate for rebuilding the home, rather than its market value?
- Contents sum insured: Does it reflect what it would cost to replace your household contents?
- Water definitions: How are flood, storm and storm surge defined, and what coastal-water exclusions apply?
- Temporary accommodation: What conditions, limits and expenses apply to the advertised duration?
- Excesses and premium: What excess applies to each type of claim, and what is the quoted premium for your chosen payment frequency?
- Item limits: Do valuable or portable items need separate listing or optional cover?
- Claims arrangements: What repair process and complaint pathway apply if a claim is disputed?
Bendigo says increasing an excess may reduce the premium and that fortnightly, monthly or quarterly payments carry no extra charge. Treat these as statements to verify against your current quote and policy settings, not as a price promise. Bendigo directs customers to obtain a quote; without a defined property profile and dated quote, there is no sound basis for stating a representative premium or calling this policy cheaper than alternatives.

Claims, issuer and remuneration
Bendigo lists CGU’s claims line, 13 24 80, as available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its claims page describes escalation from the claim consultant to CGU’s Internal Dispute Resolution team and, if the issue remains unresolved, the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA).
Bendigo says it distributes or arranges the insurance under its own Australian financial services licence and an agreement with Insurance Australia Limited. It also discloses that it receives commission included in the amount paid when a customer purchases an insurance product from the bank. The bank’s remuneration disclosure is separate from any publisher relationship.
Verdict: a potentially useful Plus feature, but the documents decide
The up-to-two-years temporary-accommodation headline is the clearest differentiator Bendigo highlights for Building and Contents Plus. The product summary also gives useful signals about water cover, liability and contents options, but those headlines do not establish that a specific loss is covered or that the premium is competitive. Before choosing, confirm your policy generation, insured amounts, optional benefits, excesses and exclusions in the quote and policy documents. Bendigo states that its advice is general and does not take your personal circumstances into account.
