Bell has announced plans for up to 900 megawatts of additional capacity at its Regina-area AI data-centre project, but the available official sources do not confirm that it wants to buy nearly 900 acres. The two figures describe different things: megawatts measure power capacity, while acres measure land area.
What Bell and Saskatchewan have announced
Bell announced a 300 MW AI data centre in the Rural Municipality of Sherwood, just outside Regina, on March 16, 2026. Bell’s announcement
On September 14, 2026, Bell and the Government of Saskatchewan announced a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) for phased development of up to 900 MW of additional capacity. If the plan proceeds, the initial 300 MW project and proposed addition could form a 1.2 GW hub in Saskatchewan. The 900 MW is planned capacity—not a completed expansion or a statement of land area. Does Bell plan to buy nearly 900 acres?
The official project materials available do not establish a purchase agreement or a plan to buy nearly 900 acres. Bell’s site brochure says the existing site is fully owned by Bell and identifies two adjacent agricultural parcels as available for future data-centre development. Accordingly, the acreage claim remains unconfirmed in the official sources cited here. The supported expansion figure is up to 900 MW of added capacity, not 900 acres of land.

What must happen before the added capacity proceeds
The MOU is non-binding. Bell’s proposed additional capacity depends on customer commitments, commercial agreements, permits, approvals, and relevant environmental assessments. On October 1, 2026, Saskatchewan said structural steel was rising, all four buildings in the first phase were taking shape, and more than 500 people were working on site. Investment and job figures are projections
Government announcements attach large investment and employment estimates to the broader plan, but they should not be read as money already spent or jobs already created. Saskatchewan described up to 500 permanent jobs associated with data-centre operations and power generation, plus an estimated 3,000 additional jobs in security, logistics, and maintenance. A federal announcement gave an overall estimate of up to 4,500 jobs and characterized total capital investment as up to $52.5 billion. These are announced estimates.
