Before giving a Mac AI app access to local data or device controls, review its permissions in Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security (macOS 13 or later). These eight checks cover what the app can read, record, or control. Grant only access needed for a feature you intend to use; an AI app does not automatically need every permission on this list.
Where to review an AI app’s permissions
On macOS 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security, then select the relevant permission category. On macOS 12 or earlier, use Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Labels and pane layouts can change between macOS releases.
Permission requests vary by app, macOS version, and whether you use a native app or a website. Review the access the specific app requests rather than assuming that all AI tools need the same capabilities. Apple also advises considering third-party privacy practices: a permission explains what an app can access on your Mac, but does not establish what its provider retains or does with that information.
Eight permissions to check
1. Files & Folders
Check whether the app can access protected locations such as Desktop, Documents, or Downloads. If a feature needs to summarize a document, allow access only to the location or files that feature requires where macOS offers that choice. Access to selected folders is narrower than Full Disk Access. See Apple’s guidance on controlling access to files and folders on Mac.

2. Full Disk Access
Scrutinize this request: it is broader than access to a specific folder. Apple says Full Disk Access can include files across the computer, data from apps such as Mail, Messages, and Safari, data in Home, Time Machine backups, and certain administrative settings. Do not treat it as a routine requirement for a conversational AI app.
3. Screen & System Audio Recording
This permission can let an app record the screen, system audio, or audio, depending on the access requested. Screen capture may expose anything visible, including private messages, documents, or account details. Before enabling a screen-aware feature, close or hide sensitive material. Apple explains how to control access to screen and system audio recording and recommends reviewing the third-party app’s privacy practices.

4. Microphone
Allow microphone access only when you plan to use a feature that needs audio input, such as voice interaction. macOS lets you switch microphone access on or off per app. Control Center’s Recording Indicator shows when the microphone is in use or has recently been used. Apple’s microphone access guide describes the controls.

Review camera access separately from microphone access. Turn it on only for a feature that needs video input, such as an image or video interaction. A request for camera access is not, by itself, evidence that the provider stores or trains on what the camera captures; check the service’s current privacy terms for its data practices.

6. Input Monitoring
Apple describes Input Monitoring as allowing an app to monitor mouse or trackpad input and see what is typed on the keyboard. That is a high-impact capability. A standard chat interface should not be assumed to need it; approve it only when a specific feature you intend to use requires it and you trust the app.
7. Accessibility
Accessibility access can allow an app to run scripts and system commands to control the Mac. Consider the specific function that requires this capability before granting it; it is not simply another form of file access. Apple’s Privacy & Security settings reference describes these permissions.

8. Automation
Automation lets an app access and control other apps on the Mac. Review which target apps the AI tool wants to control and allow only the integrations you plan to use. macOS requires user permission for accessibility and automation access.
Revisit access after trying an app
Return to Privacy & Security after installing or testing an AI app. Review its approved permissions and revoke access you no longer need; Apple says macOS lets you see which apps have been granted covered types of access and withdraw future access. This is useful when you enabled a capability for a one-time task or stopped using an integration.

Two baseline protections beyond the eight checks
FileVault protects stored data
FileVault encrypts the Mac’s startup volume. Access to the encrypted volume requires valid login credentials or a recovery key; without them, the data remains protected if storage is removed and connected to another computer. This protects data at rest, not data an authorized app can access during an unlocked session. Apple explains how macOS controls app access to files.
Keep Gatekeeper’s downloaded-software checks in place
Gatekeeper checks that downloaded software is from an identified developer, has been notarized by Apple, and has not been altered; macOS asks for approval before the first opening. Keep the standard protections enabled, and do not bypass a warning solely to install an AI app. These checks address software provenance and known malicious content, not whether an app’s data practices suit you. Apple’s Gatekeeper and runtime protection documentation was published on 19 December 2024.
When Lockdown Mode makes sense
Lockdown Mode is an escalation option for someone who believes they are personally targeted by a highly sophisticated cyberattack, not a standard prerequisite for using AI. Apple says, “Most people are never targeted by attacks of this nature.” Its guidance on protecting app access to user data describes macOS protections and was published on 13 May 2022.
