Beaver Builder design kits let you create a shared design system and site pages in a local folder, use an AI coding agent to help author them, then import selected pages into Beaver Builder. A kit is an importable package—not a running WordPress site. For a full local WordPress environment, use WordPress Studio; for a quick browser-based prototype, consider WordPress Playground. These tools solve related but different problems.

What is a Beaver Builder design kit?

Beaver Builder defines a design kit as a local folder containing a design system, its pages, and optional global elements. The folder has a specification that lets an AI coding agent create files Beaver Builder can import. It behaves like a static site while you work on it, so ordinary local tools can be used to build and preview its contents. Beaver Builder’s design-kit documentation describes the format and workflow.

  • Design system: shared tokens, base CSS, and any shared JavaScript.
  • Pages: page files styled to use the design system.
  • Optional global elements: shared components such as a header, footer, or both.
  • Optional assets: local images used by the pages.

The kit is a portable authoring package. It is not a WordPress installation, hosting service, or Studio Blueprint.

How do you build and import a kit with an AI coding agent?

The documented workflow starts with kit files and ends with a validated import into Beaver Builder. The AI coding agent authors the files; it does not turn the kit folder into a live WordPress site.

  1. Choose a starting point. Begin with a blank kit, download a starter kit, or export a kit from an existing design system.
  2. Give the agent the kit folder and a concrete brief. For example, Beaver Builder’s documentation uses the brief “build a five-page site for a landscaping company.” Specify the intended pages, audience, content, visual direction, and any relevant brand rules so the agent has clear constraints.
  3. Have the agent work within the kit structure. The documented locations include design-system/styles.css for design-system styles, pages/ for pages, and optional globals/ and assets/ folders for global elements and local images.
  4. Inspect the result locally. Preview the static kit and check that pages use the shared design rules consistently before importing. Local preview is useful for reviewing the authored files; it is not a substitute for checking the result in the WordPress environment where it will be used.
  5. Zip the kit folder and import it. In Beaver Builder, go to Design Systems > Import a Kit and upload the archive.
  6. Review and select pages. The importer validates the archive before you choose which pages to import. Supported JPG, PNG, GIF, and WebP assets can be added to the WordPress media library, and references are updated during import. See the Beaver Builder kit instructions for the current format and import details.

Beaver Builder’s documentation lists nine bundled starter kits; that is a product count, not a measure of market share or quality. Starter-kit inventory can change, so check the current interface for the available choices. Beaver Builder Design Kits

Which WordPress environment fits the work?

The key distinction is what you need to create: pages and a shared design system, a complete local WordPress site, or a quick disposable prototype. WordPress Studio and Playground are not alternative names for the Beaver Builder kit format.

Tool or format Where it runs Primary purpose What to know about the path onward
Beaver Builder design kit Local folder worked on with ordinary local tools Author a design system and pages, optionally with an AI coding agent, then import selected pages into Beaver Builder Zip and upload through Beaver Builder’s kit importer; the kit itself is not a WordPress site.
WordPress Studio Desktop application for macOS 13 or newer, 64-bit Windows, and 64-bit Debian-based Linux, according to documentation updated October 2, 2026 Develop and test local WordPress sites; its documentation also covers AI-assisted Studio Code, debugging, import/export, hosted previews, and syncing Can preview or sync in eligible cases; account and site conditions apply. Studio Blueprint JSON configuration used by WordPress Studio Set up a fresh Studio site with choices such as WordPress and PHP versions, plugins, themes, content, and settings It configures an environment; it is not a Beaver Builder design kit. The guide features Quick Start, Development, and Commerce starting points, plus a gallery of other environments. Studio Blueprints guide
WordPress Playground Browser-based WordPress environment Try WordPress with no setup for experimentation and prototypes It runs client-side using WebAssembly and is isolated from persistent side effects outside its browser sandbox; do not treat it as equivalent to a persistent desktop Studio project. How should you keep local development separate from production?

Use a development environment to test code before it reaches a production site. The WordPress Theme Handbook notes that local development can work without an internet connection or remote server, lets you see changes in a browser quickly, and supports compatibility testing. That separation gives you room to inspect and refine changes before they affect a live site. WordPress Theme Handbook: Tools and Setup

A Beaver Builder kit adds another useful separation: you can shape the design system and pages in files before importing them. After import, review the pages in the actual WordPress site and test them in context rather than assuming a local static preview establishes how the finished site will behave.

What Studio account and preview conditions should you check?

Studio’s sync and preview features have eligibility requirements. WordPress.com’s product page says sync is available for WordPress.com sites on paid plans and Pressable sites with Jetpack enabled, and that a WordPress.com account is required for preview sites and sync. As reported on that page on October 7, 2026, hosted previews remain active for seven days after the last update, and an account can have up to ten free previews at a time. These product limits may change; check the current Studio product page before planning around them.

Does “AI locally” mean the AI model runs on your computer?

Not necessarily. In the Beaver Builder kit workflow, an AI coding agent writes kit files; the workflow does not establish that the agent’s model runs on your machine. A separate WordPress AI lesson describes the AI Client, Abilities API, a separately installed AI plugin, and MCP Adapter. It gives Ollama and llama.cpp as examples of local providers that run models on a user’s hardware without per-request provider costs, but running a model locally requires hardware capable of doing so. A local provider is distinct from the coding agent that authors kit files. Learn WordPress: What is WordPress AI?
