If you want to move from the on-ear Beats Solo 4 to headphones with full-size ear cups, start with your main priority: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for comfort-focused fit, Sony WH-1000XM6 for noise cancellation and all-around performance, Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless for battery life and value, or Beats Studio Pro for an over-ear Beats option. None is a universal comfort upgrade: ear shape, clamp, and session length matter.

What changes when you replace the Beats Solo 4?

The Solo 4 sits on your ears rather than enclosing them. Beats lists it at 217 g and claims up to 50 hours of playback. It charges over USB-C and can play passively through its 3.5 mm input without battery power; Beats says, “Zero battery power required when listening via 3.5 mm audio cable.” Its custom-built 40 mm transducers and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking are manufacturer-described features, not independent sound-quality findings. Beats’ Solo 4 product page

Over-ear headphones place cushions around the ears, which may feel more comfortable during long sessions, but the larger form alone does not guarantee a better fit. Cup depth, padding, headband pressure, and how well the pads seal around your ears all affect comfort and sound. If you are seeking a closed-back design, the models below use over-ear cups; still, try to assess fit for your own head and typical listening duration.

Which Beats Solo 4 alternative should you choose?

Model Best fit for Key trade-off
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) Comfort-first shoppers Fit is individual; weigh its comfort-oriented design against your ANC and microphone priorities.
Sony WH-1000XM6 Strong ANC and all-around features Shallow ear pads may bother some ears or weaken the seal.
Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless Long stated battery life, sound adjustment, and value Its 60-hour figure is a manufacturer maximum rating, not a guaranteed everyday result.
Beats Studio Pro Beats-family over-ear design with ANC and wired inputs A reviewer notes a stiff-feeling headband, so it may not fix a comfort issue.
JBL Live 780NC A mid-range ANC alternative RTINGS says the fit is less comfortable than Sony’s, especially in long sessions.
Anker Soundcore Space Q45 A lower-mid-range ANC option Check local stock and price; the available comparisons do not establish its comfort against the main picks.

Best over-ear headphones for comfort

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)

Choose this generation as the first one to try if the Solo 4’s on-ear pressure is your main problem. RTINGS describes generous ear and headband padding and says the cups fit more head shapes; SoundGuys also names it a comfort pick. Those assessments support trying it, not assuming it will be pain-free for everyone. RTINGS’ travel headphone comparisons and SoundGuys’ noise-cancelling headphone guide

What to check in a comfort-first fit

  • How the headband and clamp feel after a session as long as your usual commute or work block.
  • Whether glasses, hair, or movement disrupt the cushion seal.

Best alternative for noise cancellation and all-around use

Sony WH-1000XM6

Sony is the strongest all-around candidate in the cited comparisons, with effective ANC, customizable warm sound, multipoint connection, and high-resolution codec support. RTINGS measured more than 31 hours of ANC-on playback in its testing; SoundGuys reported more than 37 hours under its own testing. These are separate test results, not a single guaranteed runtime or directly interchangeable benchmark. RTINGS’ travel headphone comparisons and SoundGuys’ noise-cancelling headphone guide

The main fit caution is the relatively shallow pads. They may feel cramped for some ears or compromise the seal, which can affect both comfort and noise isolation. If possible, try them with the devices and in the noisy settings where you expect to use them. RTINGS’ travel headphone comparisons

JBL Live 780NC and Anker Soundcore Space Q45

RTINGS includes both as alternatives in its 2026 guide: JBL as a mid-range ANC option and Anker as a lower-mid-range choice. The guide specifically flags the JBL fit as less comfortable than Sony’s during long listening. The cited material does not establish a like-for-like comfort comparison between the Anker model and the main recommendations, so check fit and local availability before choosing it. Best for battery life and adjustable sound

Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless

Sennheiser rates the MOMENTUM 4 for up to 60 hours of battery life with ANC on and describes its cushions as deep and soft. The 60-hour number is the manufacturer’s maximum rating, not an independent test or a promise of typical runtime. The product page also lists hybrid ANC, EQ and sound personalization, and aptX Adaptive, AAC, and SBC support; Sennheiser describes the tuning as “Warm, Bass-Driven.” Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM 4 Wireless product page

Beats Studio Pro Premium Wireless Over-Ear Headphones- Up to 40-Hour Battery Life, Active Noise Cancelling, Great for Travel & Commuting, USB-C Lossless Audio, Apple & Android Compatible -Black
  • INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
  • LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
  • ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
  • SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
  • SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.

This is a sensible option if you want long stated battery life and the ability to adjust the sound rather than choosing solely for maximum ANC. Check that its fit and sound profile suit you; a manufacturer description does not substitute for listening yourself.

Best Beats-family over-ear alternative

Beats Studio Pro

Studio Pro is the closest fit if you want to keep Beats features while switching from on-ear to over-ear cups. It offers ANC, wired inputs, and Apple-oriented features. Macworld’s comparison notes that its headband can feel stiff and was less comfortable than AirPods Max for that reviewer, so changing to this model may not solve a comfort problem. Macworld’s Beats Studio Pro comparison

How to decide between the alternatives

  • For comfort: Try the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) first, then judge the fit over your normal session length.
  • For travel or noisy work: Consider the Sony WH-1000XM6 for ANC and all-around features, while checking that its shallow pads fit and seal well for you.
  • For longer intervals between charges: Consider the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless, interpreting its up-to-60-hour ANC-on figure as a manufacturer rating.
  • To stay with Beats: Consider Studio Pro for its over-ear design and ANC, but assess headband pressure before buying.
  • For a lower-priced category option: Compare JBL Live 780NC and Anker Soundcore Space Q45 locally; current prices and stock are not established here.

Before choosing, compare cup depth and clamping force, ANC for your surroundings, sound tuning and EQ, battery figures and their test conditions, passive wired listening, multipoint support, device compatibility, and local price. Treat comfort as a personal fit question rather than a specification that guarantees a result.
