Beats 360 is a released Beats headphone, not a confirmed AirPods Max prototype. Announced on September 22, 2026, it shares some visual cues with Apple’s over-ear headphones, but the available evidence supports a comparison of design and purpose—not a claim that it began as a cancelled AirPods Max project. The more useful question is whether Beats 360 delivers the kind of Apple-connected, customizable over-ear headphone some AirPods Max fans wanted.
What “the AirPods Max prototype we never got” really means
The phrase works as a provocative comparison, but “prototype” should be read as metaphor. Beats and Apple have not established that Beats 360 was an AirPods Max prototype, a cancelled design, or a product descended from one. MacRumors notes the visual comparison, while Beats describes the 360 as a new flagship model with its own design and purpose. MacRumors’ launch coverage and Beats’ announcement support a comparison of the products, not a shared development history.
Beats executive Oliver Schusser told TechRadar, “We wanted to create a new ID, a new look, and a new over-ear headphone for a different purpose.” That is company positioning, not proof of how Apple developed either product. TechRadar’s launch report and interview provide the quote.

Beats announced the over-ear headphones on September 22, 2026, with orders opening that day and in-store availability scheduled for September 24. Beats announced four core colorways—Black, Cloud, Pink, and Sky—with matching Performance Knit cushions. The U.S. launch price was $349.99; Apple’s Store listing also showed that price when accessed. Regional prices, stock, and offers can vary. Beats’ announcement and the Apple Store listing give the release and retail details.
#1 Best Overall
- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Beats kept Studio Pro in its lineup rather than replacing it: alongside the 360 launch, Beats reduced Studio Pro’s U.S. price to $299.99. The two models therefore sit at different price points, with Beats describing the 360 as its new flagship. TechRadar also reports that Studio Pro remains available.
How Beats 360 differs from AirPods Max
| Question | Beats 360 | AirPods Max |
|---|---|---|
| What is established about the design? | Beats documents a fold-flat design, an included woven ripstop case, and interchangeable earcup and headband cushions. Apple Store listing | Technology coverage has noted visual similarities, but the reviewed sources do not establish a shared design history. MacRumors |
| What use does the manufacturer emphasize? | Beats positions the 360 for movement and everyday use and lists IPX4 sweat and water resistance. That rating is not waterproofing. Beats | The cited Beats product materials do not provide an AirPods Max water-resistance comparison. |
| What is customizable? | Separate cushion kits replace the earcup and headband cushions; Beats offers Performance Knit and UltraPlush options in multiple colors. This confirms replaceable cushions, not repairability of other components. Beats | The cited sources do not establish a directly comparable customization option. |
| What platforms are supported? | Beats lists features for Apple and Android devices. Which features work depends on compatible hardware, software, and region. Beats | The cited Beats sources do not provide a like-for-like platform feature comparison. |
| What does the price comparison show? | The U.S. launch price was $349.99 in 2026; current price and availability may differ. Beats | Check the current price in the same market and on the same date before comparing; the cited sources do not establish a current AirPods Max price. |
Customization is the clearest point of difference
Beats sells cushion kits with both earcup and headband cushions, so buyers can change the visible color and material without buying another headphone. The announced options include Performance Knit and UltraPlush in multiple colors. Beats set the standard U.S. kit price at $49.99 and announced a limited $9.99 introductory price in select markets through October 31, 2026, subject to conditions and while supplies lasted. These are dated announced prices, not a guarantee of current availability. Beats’ announcement lists the kits and terms.

That modularity is a confirmed customization feature, not evidence that the headphones’ battery, electronics, or other parts are user-repairable. Apple’s Store listing says extra cushion kits, a USB-C cable, and a power adapter are sold separately. Apple’s product listing provides the included-accessory details.
Movement-oriented features, with limits to note
Beats lists IPX4 sweat and water resistance under IEC 60529. This is a resistance rating, not a claim that the headphones are waterproof or suitable for every water activity. Beats warns that resistance can decline with normal wear and says not to charge the headphones while wet. Beats’ product announcement includes the rating and care warning.

For listening features, Beats lists active noise cancellation (ANC), transparency mode, Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C charging, a custom Beats chip, and nine microphones. The company says eight microphones are used for ANC and three for voice pickup, with two shared between those functions. It also claims up to 32 hours of listening with ANC and Personalized Spatial Audio enabled. That battery figure comes from Beats’ August 2026 test using preproduction units and specified playback settings; it is not an independently verified result.
Beats describes the 360’s ANC as its most advanced to date and claims up to 1.75 times more combined active and passive noise cancellation than Beats Studio Pro, tested under IEC 60268-24. That is a manufacturer comparison with Studio Pro—not AirPods Max—and it cannot establish which headphone cancels more noise in a direct comparison. A fair ranking would require matched independent testing. Beats’ announcement states the test standard and comparison.

Apple and Android features are not identical across devices
Beats lists Apple features including one-touch pairing, automatic switching, Audio Sharing, Find My, and Personalized Spatial Audio. For Android, it lists Fast Pair, Audio switch, Find Hub, and the Beats app. These platform-specific features depend on compatible devices, software, and region; the list does not mean every function is available on every phone or works identically across platforms. Check Beats’ feature and compatibility details against the devices you plan to use.

Who should consider Beats 360?
- Consider it if you want an over-ear headphone with interchangeable cushions, a fold-flat design, and manufacturer-stated sweat and water resistance.
- It may fit if you use both Apple and Android devices and value the platform-specific features Beats lists for each.
- Do not choose it on the prototype premise alone. No cited source establishes that it is a former AirPods Max design or that it outperforms AirPods Max.
- Compare sound, comfort, and noise cancellation directly if those are your deciding factors. The manufacturer’s 1.75-times claim is against Studio Pro, not AirPods Max.
For the reader asking “Beats version of the AirPods Max?” the most accurate answer is that Beats 360 is a distinct Beats flagship with some visual overlap and a more explicit emphasis on cushion customization and movement. Calling it the AirPods Max prototype we never got captures a mood, not a documented product history.
