What is Beast of Reincarnation?
Beast of Reincarnation is an action RPG from Game Freak, directed by Kota Furushima. The game is set in Japan in the year 4026, after blight has reshaped the environment and produced creatures called malefacts.

Emma was born afflicted by blight. The condition gives her plant-related abilities, but it also makes her an outsider in a world where the infection is dangerous. She works as a Sealer, hunting malefacts and absorbing blight. Koo is himself a malefact, so their partnership is unusual from the start. Their journey eventually points toward the Beast of Reincarnation, identified in the official material as the source of all blight. That premise establishes the stakes without requiring any story spoilers beyond the opening setup.

Game Freak describes the project in the context of a transformed, overgrown Japan rather than a conventional medieval fantasy world. Blight can alter landscapes during exploration, turning areas into dense forests and changing how familiar spaces feel. The result is a setting that supports both environmental discovery and the game’s central question: how should people live with a force that has changed the world and their bodies?

How Emma and Koo’s combat works
The combat system is the reason to pay attention to this game. Emma’s attacks, movement, and parries happen in real time, while Koo’s abilities are chosen from a command menu that slows the action. You are therefore making two kinds of decisions in the same encounter: first survive and create an opening with Emma, then spend the opportunity on the Koo skill that best changes the situation.

Emma’s katana and parries
Emma’s swordplay is fast and timing-sensitive. A successful parry is more than a defensive animation: it earns points that can be spent on Koo’s skills. Learning enemy attack cues matters because parrying both protects Emma and funds the companion system. Players who prefer to block safely or trade damage may find the design less forgiving than an action RPG centered on broad, low-risk attacks.
The game’s best moments should come from recognizing an incoming strike, parrying at the correct instant, and immediately pausing the flow of battle to issue a useful command. That sequence gives ordinary enemy encounters a tactical layer without removing the physical satisfaction of landing the parry yourself.
Koo’s command menu
Koo is not controlled as a second full character. Instead, you build a pool of parry-earned points and select abilities from the command menu. Because time slows while you choose, the menu is intended to be used during pressure rather than only between fights. You can assess enemy positioning, decide which effect is needed, and return to real-time combat with a plan.
This structure makes Koo feel closer to a tactical resource than to a conventional AI companion. The available information does not establish a complete stat table or every effect attached to these items, so it is safer to view them as the game’s confirmed build-shaping tools rather than assume a particular optimal loadout.
Exploration, traversal, and the blighted world
Exploration is tied directly to Emma’s condition. Her plant-like hair is described as a traversal and combat tool: it helps her move across difficult terrain and enables aerial attacks. That means the visual design is functional rather than a purely cosmetic character trait.
Blight can also transform the world while you explore. Landscapes may become thick, overgrown forests, and the same setting can feel more hostile as the infection changes it. This supports a stronger connection between story premise and level design than a setting in which the apocalypse exists only in dialogue.
The world is not presented as a tourism tour of historical Japan. It is a far-future interpretation in which recognizable cultural foundations have been overtaken by centuries of environmental change. The combination of plant growth, malefacts, and Emma’s movement abilities gives traversal a natural role in the fiction: she is equipped to move through a world that ordinary people can no longer cross easily.

Story, tone, and atmosphere
The setup combines post-apocalyptic science fiction, Japanese imagery, and a relationship between a human Sealer and a malefact companion. If you prefer compact campaigns with little repeated exposition, those are meaningful cautions; if you enjoy a slower relationship-focused journey, the emotional emphasis may be a benefit.
No story turns beyond the published premise are necessary to decide whether the tone suits you. Expect a serious journey through a damaged world rather than a lighthearted animal sidekick adventure.
What TechRadar’s PC review actually tested
TechRadar’s review was first published in July 2026. Its reviewer tested the game on a desktop with a GeForce RTX 4080 Super, another PC using an RX 9060 XT, and a Lenovo Legion Go S with a Z1 Extreme processor. The reported results apply to those systems and settings, not to every PC configuration or to consoles.
- The review reports no support for 21:9 ultrawide displays.
- It notes frame-rate dips in busy scenes.
- On the Lenovo handheld, the reviewer had difficulty maintaining 60 frames per second even at low settings.
These observations are useful when choosing a PC version, especially if you use an ultrawide monitor or expect a handheld to hold a locked 60 fps. They are not an independent benchmark, and the article does not establish a universal performance target for all GPUs, drivers, patches, or settings. Console performance should likewise be checked against the current store or manufacturer information rather than inferred from this PC testing.
