BcalcOS is an early-stage Linux desktop distribution that describes itself as a general-use system based on Devuan. Its project listing labels it Alpha and names a desktop stack of sysvinit, Xlibre, SLiM and Xfce. That is enough to identify the project’s stated direction, but not to establish hardware compatibility, stability, support duration or a complete update policy.
What BcalcOS is
The BcalcOS project listing describes BcalcOS Linux as “a good-to-go, general use computer desktop system based on Devuan.” This is the project’s own description, not an independent assessment. The same listing labels the project Alpha, so its confident-sounding wording should not be read as evidence of production readiness.
“Based on Devuan” establishes the project’s stated upstream base. It does not, by itself, show that BcalcOS inherits every Devuan feature, repository, support policy, or hardware compatibility guarantee. The BcalcOS listing names a handful of components, but does not provide a complete system specification or a separate support policy.
Which desktop components the project lists
The BcalcOS listing names these parts of its software stack:

- Devuan base: the stated distribution foundation.
- sysvinit: the init system named by the project.
- Xlibre: the listed display server.
- SLiM: the listed display manager, which handles the graphical login screen.
- Xfce: the desktop environment.
These are the components the project page identifies; the listing does not establish their exact versions or whether the system includes additional options.
What Devuan context can—and cannot—tell you
Devuan describes itself as a Debian fork without systemd. Its upstream documentation is useful context for understanding the base, but it is not BcalcOS-specific documentation. Devuan’s OS overview identifies Excalibur 6 as its current stable release, gives the release date as 2025-11-02, and reports Linux kernel 6.12. It also lists SysVinit, OpenRC and Runit choices, apt and dpkg, and support for multiple architectures. Those are statements about Devuan Excalibur, not confirmed BcalcOS release details.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
Devuan’s OS overview, download page and installation documentation describe upstream releases and installation-media options, including desktop-live, netinstall, server, desktop DVD and minimal-live images. The installation documentation cautions that Debian and Devuan have subtle differences and points readers to release-specific instructions. None of this substitutes for BcalcOS-specific installation steps.

The project listing labels BcalcOS Alpha. Treat that as an early-stage project rather than a guarantee of a dependable daily-use system. The available project information does not establish a support window, tested hardware list, release cadence, update or security policy, or installation success rate. Anyone considering it for a primary computer should first look for current project documentation that answers those questions.

Download status and checks before installing
The BcalcOS listing surfaced an ISO artifact named bcalcos-20260823_1415.iso, with a listed size of 2.4 GB and a displayed checksum. This is a dated file entry, not proof that it remains the latest download or that the project has reached a stable release. Check the project listing for the current file and any accompanying instructions.

Devuan says its package repositories are exclusive and advises against directly adding Debian, Ubuntu, Mint or other distributions’ repositories. Follow BcalcOS-specific repository guidance rather than mixing repositories based only on the fact that BcalcOS is Devuan-based. Devuan’s package documentation provides upstream context, not a BcalcOS repository guide.
