BaZi can be modeled as a state machine if you treat the birth chart as the starting configuration, a chosen time cycle as input, and the rules for updating the chart as transitions. That is a modern computational analogy, not a traditional BaZi standard: the analogy works only when you state what counts as a state, input, transition, and output.
What is BaZi?
BaZi (八字), often called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a traditional interpretive system built around a chart derived from a person’s birth time. In the account described by Fourfold Astrology’s BaZi explainer, the chart has four pillars—Year, Month, Day, and Hour—and each pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch. Four pairs make the chart’s eight characters.
The same guide describes five elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—and identifies the Day Master as the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar, used as a reference point in interpretation. The chart is therefore more than a count of elements: the guide also discusses hidden elements and relationships interpreted relative to the Day Master.

The Four Pillars are the Year, Month, Day, and Hour components of the chart. Each combines one of the ten Heavenly Stems with one of the twelve Earthly Branches. Their arrangement is the natal chart, a representation derived using calendrical conventions; it is not, by itself, a set of computational instructions for how the chart changes over time.

Can BaZi be modeled as a state machine?
Yes, as an explicitly defined model. The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Dictionary of Algorithms and Data Structures defines a finite state machine as “A model of computation consisting of a set of states, a start state, an input alphabet, and a transition function that maps input symbols and current states to a next state.” Applied to BaZi, that definition prompts the modeler to specify the chart’s state, the time-related input, the update rule, and what the model returns.
BaZi guides describe a chart structure and interpretive vocabulary; they do not establish a canonical state-machine formulation. The computational mapping below is therefore a modeling choice, not a claim that BaZi historically was computer science or that practitioners universally use these terms.

| Machine concept | Possible BaZi mapping | What must be made explicit |
|---|---|---|
| Initial state | The natal chart represented as four stem-and-branch pairs | This represents the chart; it does not define a transition rule. |
| State variables | The chart’s stems, branches, and any selected interpretive attributes | Specify which features the model tracks. A simple element count may omit hidden elements and Day Master relationships described in the BaZi guide. |
| Input or context | A selected time cycle, such as a Luck Pillar | Identify the calendar convention and interpretive source used. |
| Transition function | A rule mapping the current modeled configuration and input to a next configuration | Write the rule so another person could apply it consistently; no canonical BaZi transition function is established by the cited materials. |
| Output | A displayed configuration or an interpretation of it | Say whether the output is descriptive or interpretive. It is not an objectively validated forecast merely because a machine produces it. |
If a BaZi chart is a snapshot, what changes when time advances?
In a state-machine model, the natal chart can remain the initial state while a chosen time cycle supplies context for a new modeled state. For example, MyBaZi’s BaZi guide says a new Luck Pillar overlays the natal chart every ten years. That is the convention stated by that guide, not a universal rule established here; an implementation should identify its source and calendar assumptions rather than silently treating the interval as universal.

Applying the stated cycle rule produces state S′. The model then displays the changed features, which a practitioner may interpret using a declared BaZi framework. How to make the model reproducible
- Fix the chart representation. State that the initial configuration consists of the four Year, Month, Day, and Hour stem-branch pairs, and explain which chart-construction convention you use.
- Choose the variables. List the features carried from one state to the next, including any interpretive attributes you intend to track. Explain omissions rather than implying that a simplified representation captures the whole tradition.
- Name the input. Specify the time cycle and its source. If using the Luck Pillar convention described by MyBaZi, say that this is the convention applied by that guide.
- Define the transition rule. Describe exactly how the input changes the modeled configuration. If interpretation is performed by a person rather than an algorithm, keep that interpretive step distinct from the state update.
- Define the output. Say whether the model produces a changed chart representation, an interpretive statement, or something else. Do not label an interpretation an objective prediction without evidence.
- Check repeatability. Give enough detail that another reader applying the same initial chart, input, and rules can obtain the same modeled next state. If practitioners can make different interpretive judgments, describe that separately.
Where the comparison is useful—and where it stops
State-machine language can clarify what a BaZi model is doing: which chart features it stores, what time-related context it applies, and how it arrives at a displayed or interpreted result. It can also expose missing assumptions. A chart snapshot alone does not specify what changes, when it changes, or how the next state is determined.
The analogy does not establish that BaZi predicts personality, events, or life outcomes. The cited BaZi guides describe a traditional interpretive system, while NIST defines a computational model; none of these sources supplies a validation study of BaZi’s predictive performance. A formal transition function can make an implementation explicit and repeatable, but it cannot by itself validate the interpretive claims attached to its output.
